  • "Wi-Fi didn't work Numerous televisions."

..Unfortunately only worked randomly No instructions annoying...reason for not having them was laim when so many books and magazines in shelves Cold....even with a heater provided No oven g!oves Need to give more accurate information about parking

Hi Lynn, I’m sorry your stay wasn’t pleasant. The WiFi does work and all the TVs are smart TVs. The instructions were clearly itemised in my pre arrival check in messages, we don’t leave hard copies as they get damaged and out date very quickly in this modern world. Hope you enjoyed the books and magazines, these don’t outdate hence having them. These old cottages can sometimes feel cold even when warm outside, the heating system kick in automatically when the temperature falls below 16/18degrees, the oil filled heaters are there to be used as per my instructions. There are oven gloves in the cottage along with tea towels. Parking instructions were in my pre arrival messages. I’m sorry that your experience was not great however, I feel this could have been avoided or made better if my instructions were better understood/ read, mainly user error unfortunately. Many previous guests have always made comments on how well equipped our cottage is and user friendly everything is. Property Owner

  • "Jaipur House is a great place to stay, with everything provided for a self-catering break."

The beds were super comfy, and the house was spotlessly clean, and although fairly small, it was more than big enough for my son and I to have our own space. Parking was really convenient with a car park just across the road. The owner was really friendly and on hand to recommend places to eat and visit. Richmond itself is lovely with lots of shops, restaurants, coffee shops & tea rooms. The castle is a great place to visit, as is the Station. We drove to Wensleydale which is one of the most picturesque drives I've ever done. There is loads to do in the area and I would not hesitate to return in the future :)

  • "We enjoyed our stay and generally the house is well stocked, in a relatively small space, and in good order apart from the things listed below, and in a good location for the town centre."

There are a few things which could be improved. The main thing for me was a persistent unpleasant smell, which seemed to be worst in the cinema room, but I couldn't pin point it. We didn't find any instructions for anything; it would be especially useful to have instructions for each TV as they all rely on internet access (no aerial/Freeview) and they all worked differently, i.e. which button(s) to press to get the required apps active. Eventually we worked them out but it was confusing and some non-technically minded people could struggle with them. The heating wasn't on when we arrived as the thermostat was placed close to an electric radiator (it was warm in that area but nowhere else). Other things are general wear & tear - the bin doesn't close, hallway radiator valve is broken, some bedroom drawer handles broken, washing machine is very noisy - like an aircraft! (And again no instructions.)

Hi Gary, thank you for your feedback we take all comments onboard and act on them accordingly so you thank you for raising them with us. As the cottage is over 200 years old there can be an odd smell occasionally of an old building, unfortunately this is something that cannot be helped and almost adds to its charm. We do not supply a printed copy of instructions as these can be misplaced or even damaged so we send a list of arrival instructions / notes on how to operate the devices within the property via WhatsApp, appreciate that these may not have been clear enough for you so apologies regarding this. Thank you regarding the point of the thermostat placement, I’ll rethink where best to position it and address, so thank you again. Wear / tear issues will also be rectified asap. I hope you enjoyed your Christmas break in general and enjoyed the bottle of fizz we left for you to enjoy. Property Owner

  • "Excellent location for the town centre, restaurants, theatre, museum and as a base for walks from Richmond to the surrounding area."

Beds are super comfy. We enjoyed the cinema room (a treat for us, but some instructions on how the remote controls worked would have been helpful!) We found parking in Wellington Place each time we parked up. I would have liked a bath mat to stand on in the bath when using the shower. A comfy holiday retreat with all that we needed for our first trip to Richmond. Thank you.

Thank you for your lovely feedback, I m glad that you enjoyed our little cottage, the surrounding areas and the local town, we also love it when we visit. We do not provide bath mats due to hygiene reasons. Thank you for your feedback regard remote control instructions, we will take this into account. Hope to have you back! Thank you. Property Owner

  • "We chose this property amongst other things, for its closeness to town centre and availability of nearby car park."

Please be aware there is no outside space. The living room has a two seater sofa and the “cinema” room a second two seater sofa which makes it unsuitable for a group of four to sit together. Whilst there are a total of four televisions in the property it should be noted that there is no terrestrial TV which we found disappointing. It is usual to find a file with instructions for appliances etc. and information about the area but there was nothing in this property. Some information was sent via What’s App. Whilst there are two double bedrooms, the second one was very tight for space around the bed itself. Bathroom is very well appointed with great shower. Kitchen was good - well equipped with everything you would need. We enjoyed our stay in Richmond but wouldn’t return to this property.

Hi Joan, thank you for your feedback. I am sorry to hear that you would not be returning to Jaipur House, not every property is suited for everyone. All previous feedback about the internal layout has been positive, I am concerned that you did not look at the photographs fully before booking as these quite clearly demonstrate the seating arrangements and show what room the second bedroom has. As your booking was only for 2 adults, I’m not sure why you saw this as concern. We don't offer terrestrial TV as most people want the luxury of escaping day to day life and TV and are happy with the smart TV. It’s is quite clear from the pictures that there is no outside space. Thank you for your feedback regarding a file, we will consider this however, most guests are happy to receive information electronically. Thank you for your positive feedback regarding the kitchen and bathroom. Many thanks. Property Owner

  • "The property smells of damp, this is more than likely from the TV room (TV not connected to any input) as the back of the property is below ground level and the tanking has failed."

There was also evidence of a leak from the bathroom on the ceiling of the hall & sitting room. The property was clean and well presented, location was great for easy access to the town centre. Car parking was 2 minutes away at the Nuns Close car park (£15 a week). One niggle the back bedroom had a double bed in it, the room was small that it was difficult to get down the sides of the bed. In fact the child got up to go to the toilet in the night and banged their head off the wall. The bathroom has a fixed shower screen, the remaining gap made it very difficult to help bath a child and if you got up from the toilet leaning forward, you hit your head off it.

Hi Brian, thank you for your feedback. We did have a leak in the bathroom which has since been fixed, just waiting on contractors to do the remedial works. These old properties definitely come with their challenges, and underground rooms are one of them. I’ll contact the tanking company, thank you again for your feedback. Again, these properties come with their challenges and small spaces is definitely one of them. Apart from the above, I hope you had a lovely stay in Richmond and the weather was kind to you. Many thanks. Property Owner

Bedding and towels very good quality, Loved having the TV in the bedroom as dont normally get this in a cottage. Was great to have a nice lazy morning a few days. Kitchen had enough for us, don't cook full meals but had what we needed for breakfast, lunches or snacks. Fridge was a bit awkward to get into as is a small space. Our favourite was the cinema room, used this a few times during our stay, plus cottage very central and close to all amenities. Plus Paul the owner was very quick to respond to text msg regarding any issues, information and recommended various restaurants. Would definitely return for another stay.

  • "Great wee cottage close to the centre of Richmond."

We live in Richmond so know what a super town it is close to some stunning Dales countryside. We stayed in Jaipur House for 4 weeks as our house is under renovation. The cottage worked well for us as a couple. Given the size of rooms and the setup of the the main living room I can’t imagine it working well for more than 2 though. A couple of bug bears were we were surprised to find the gas and electricity on prepayment meters and that we needed to periodically check on these per the owner. As it turned out, it was fine as we didn’t run out but it was a worry to be told this. Also the fridge is too tall for the space it’s situated so the door only partially opens. Despite these issues, we would certainly recommend the cottage for a couple.

Hi John, Thank you for your feedback and recommendations, I am glad you enjoyed your stay at Jaipur House and that the cottage worked for you. Sorry about the concerns regarding the prepayment meters, we always fully load them to avoid any shortfall or issues whilst guests are staying, I just thought it was best to make you aware during your stay. We are currently on the list to have these changed. Re: the fridge, unfortunately these small cottages dont allow much elbow room. Property Owner

We had an issue on arrival where the key code had been changed without notice and we stood for quite a while before being able to get in. The rooms downstairs were a good size and it would be nice to go back in the colder months and take advantage of the log burner. The kitchen is well equipped. There was a side gate to an outdoor area but this was locked and we could not find a key for it. The bedrooms are on the small size with nowhere to hang clothes. The bathroom was nice and clean. Overall a lovely place to stay but we would have liked an outside space to sit. Would definitely stay again

About the location

RICHMOND

Barnard Castle 10 miles; Leyburn 12 miles.

Situated at the entrance to Swaledale, the ancient market town of Richmond stands on a prominent hilltop site to the north of the River Swale. Its cobbled streets and narrow alleys or 'wynds' enshrine over nine centuries of busy history and unique character. The town grew up around its castle, a Norman fortress dating back to 1071, famously situated high above the river - indeed the name Richmond is derived from 'Riche-mont' meaning 'strong hill'. Today there are wonderful walks to be enjoyed such as the Castle Walk - a dramatic terrace walk beneath the castle walls - or alternatively walk alongside the River Swale where there are parks, safe paddling areas and small waterfalls to enjoy. Within the town, narrow streets and alleys radiate from the cobbled Market Place (which has a weekly market and monthly farmers’ market) and there are numerous shops, pubs and restaurants to enjoy. The town flourished in the 18th and 19th centuries and the resulting elegant Georgian architecture lines many of the old streets. The Georgian Theatre is one of the oldest surviving theatres in the country with visitors enjoying its regular productions all year round.
