Butler's Cottage

Had a lovely two weeks holiday stay in the Butlers cottage.

It’s was so peaceful and relaxing. The weather was the hottest June on record but because the cottage is on the coast of in the shade of trees it stayed really cool. The dogs loved the garden and the cottage is in the wonderful grounds of Cober Hill hotel which we loved walking around. The cottage is very well equipped with dishwasher, fridge with a separate freezer and even a washing machine. The bed was very comfortable and we slept very well. We had a wonderful afternoon tea at the hotel for our wedding anniversary. The cottage is old and is showing signs of wear and tear it places but to us that just added to its charm. It was like staying in a natural trust property that is full of history we would recommend this place to anyone who is looking for a relaxing peaceful holiday in beautiful grounds with wonderful coastal and countryside walks on the doorstep. With Scarborough and Whitby just a short drive away. It felt so special staying there. It’s the sort of place people would love to retire too living by the coast.

Loved the property and grounds.

Our little dog had a wonderful time running round the garden. Good range of plates, bowls, cooking equipment and cutlery. My only complaints there were no instructions for the heating and cooker. Also strangely no books,games or visitors book! We loved Whitby and visited the home of Bangers and cash! Will definitely return one day.

The property listing gave the impression of being both an attractive and a well maintained property.

However we thought the property was in need of a 'make over'. Many of the interior walls were marked and dirty. Many items of furniture were well past their best i.e. the settees which smelt of dogs. There was no tin opener although the kitchen was adequately well equipped otherwise.

Really lovely house in a great location.

The beautiful,extensive grounds led to footpaths that accessed the coastal path in under 15 minutes and there were also regular buses into Scarborough. The house was well equipt and the starter pack of tea/ coffee and a few basic cleaning items was really helpful. The mattress on the king-size bed would benefit from an upgrade and it would be good to have instructions for the hob.

Accommodation was perfect for our needs. Very peaceful location and superb views over to the sea. I wasn't expecting the beautiful rolling countryside and sea views. Lots of birds, frogs and other wildlife. Comfy beds. Thank you so much

This is quite an old property with a few minor issues.

Some of these are part of the building's charm and some are due to general wear and tear. I'm not bothered by the single glazed windows; the heating copes with this although it was quite some time before the building reached a comfortable temperature. More concerning is the leak from the ground floor shower and the smoke blowing back from the open fire. Neither of these is a major issue but the shower in particular is disappointing. I don't suppose there's any cure for the smoke but perhaps fitting a wind cowl would help. Overall we had a lovely time and hope to be back in warmer times.

A pituresque, welcoming and very comfortable cottage, set in lovely grounds, ideal for our dog to take his morning walk before we headed out for the day on one of the many footpaths available on the doorstep.

Staff at reception really friendly when collecting and leaving keys to the cottage and available if you need to ask anything during your stay. Despite the weather being unseasonably warm and dry for November we still lit the fire one night which was lovely and added to the already very cosy living room. Friendly pubs serving good food and there are regular busses to get to Scarborough and/or Whitby if you don't want to drive. We would definitely book this property again. Alison

This cottage was an absolute gem.

It was perfectly situated for Whitby and Scarborough and even York if you wanted to go further afield. The facilities were exactly as described and we had everything in the house you could possibly need. Clean, warm and quiet, we will be back here again.

An amazing cottage with plenty of room.

Great facility and the use of the near by hotels grounds. Good location near to a few local villages. Great for nearby towns north and south Scarborough, Robind Hoods Bay and Whitby. We loved it that much we want to buy Butlers Cottage

Lovely well maintained and presented cottage in a beautiful location.

Took my kids for a short break and we enjoyed amazing coastal walks. Use of the facilities at Cober Hill was a smashing added benefit as we really enjoyed playing tennis and ping pong!

A fantastic cottage with plenty of space for a family, ours consisted of Nan and Grandad, Mum and Dad and a toddler.

The beds were super comfy and the kitchen had plenty of utensils and crockery if you want to eat in. The garden plus the amazing grounds of the hotel gives you plenty of space to stretch your legs. There are also garden games and a play area in the grounds. If you fancy a treat we even had a wonderful afternoon tea in the hotel.

What’s not to like at Butlers Cottage, Cober Hill.

It’s a fabulous a house and we were lucky enough to have great weather so we used the garden a lot in the evenings. It’s clean, comfortable and spacious. Playing croquet in the grounds was an added bonus which we all really enjoyed. A big shout out to all the staff at Cober Hill who were so lovely and helpful. Also a special shout out to the gentleman who cut and recut the croquet green as though we were professionals going to play. We were all really impressed and plan to revisit.

We found Butlers Cottage an ideal base to explore the Yorkshire coastline.

The location was near main facilities, such as supermarkets and lots of restaurants but with the benefit of being in a quiet location. The cottage was clean and looked after with the immaculate garden, together with the hotel grounds that you are welcome to explore. We found all staff to be very friendly and helpful and are certainly looking forward to returning in the future!.

This is the second time we have stayed at Butler's Cottage.

We again found it to be spacious, well equipped, warm, clean and comfortable. The grounds are lovely with many quiet places to sit and contemplate the beautiful countryside and sea views, as well as a varied number of outside games such as croquet, miniature golf, skittles, etc. It is also convenient for visiting so many resorts, with coastal walks right on the doorstep. Staff at the hotel itself were lovely and very welcoming, and the evening meal we had on the last night was delicious. Meals need to be booked a day before and we had a choice of three menu options for all courses which we selected at the time of booking. The hotel and the cottage are very dog friendly. We look forward to returning.

Very clean and comfortable. The staff at Cober Hill were very friendly and welcoming.

Butlers cottage was a little tired but overall very comfortable and we had a very enjoyable stay staff at the hotel very pleasant and helpful would stay again .

Excellent and unpretentious cottage.

Beautifully situated. The service (if needed) from Cober Hill reception (In whose grounds Butlers cottage sits) is friendly and efficient. 0ur fourth visit. Seriously considering claiming squatters rights next time !!

We arrived on the Saturday to find the property extremely cold.

The temperature showed 14 degrees! The first night we woke up and was very cold - our face / noses felt as if we were actually sleeping outside. It appears the central heating settings were programmed to go off more than on and with this being an older, uninsulated property with extreme drafts from the windows and doors, it never appeared to retain its heat. We used another duvet from another bedroom to keep us warm. I might add that the duvets are probably in need of replacement. They are very flat and worn looking. We happened to come across the maintenance man on site (Wednesday) who checked it all out and changed settings but this was not until Wednesday. The cottage began to feel more comfortable but the kitchen dining area was still too cold to sit and eat in. I think this is a property you would not want to stay in out of season and presume it would feel more comfortable temperature wise in the Spring / Summer. The bath also had scum marks so had not been cleaned very well. The toilets were very brown in the bottom so I would recommend toilet ducks / bleach should be used and provided by the property owners. My husband actually cleaned the downstairs toilet as it looked so gross! In terms of location, it is very good to use as a base. The grounds are nice although tennis court area requires attention. We were provided with coffee / tea and UHT pots of mild but that was all. I would have expected cake / flowers for the finishing touches as experienced in other holiday cottages. The plus side is the open fire in the lounge is effective but does not heat anywhere else.

Lovely sitting room and two main bedrooms.

Exceptionally helpful and friendly staff. Yes, the smell of heating oil was immediately noticeable, but didn’t put us off any of the meals we had in the kitchen; we just got used to it. The children appreciated the games room - thank you. The cottage isn’t very far from the main road, but I think I noticed traffic noise only once. Minor niggles - none of which would put us off a further stay, and based only on things provided by some other cottage owners - include unsuitable kindling (we just bought two bags of our own when out shopping on the Sunday), the absence of any fresh milk in the fridge and washing machine tablets/gel/powder. However, I should have prepared for the wash powder and did for the milk anyway. We couldn’t find the Wi-Fi password ‘near the TV’, but just turned round the router. I couldn’t get the grill or the vacuum cleaner to work, but neither was a priority; I forgot to mention either when popping in to reception each day. (Some other reviewers mentioned the lack of playing cards/dominos/board games etc, but we brought some of our own. Again, something to think about, maybe, but not a dealbreaker for us by any means.) Overall a super cottage and great stay (and with two hungry children I recommend the Three Jolly Sailors for filling pub grub at a fair price.)

This was our second stay at Butler's Cottage - returning this time to celebrate Christmas.

The cottage was incredibly welcoming - full of festive cheer which included beautiful decorations and a bottle of prosecco. We treated ourselves to a fire every evening - there was plenty of wood provided and more to hand if needed. The cottage was clean and comfortable. The sitting room is a particularly attractive room with plenty of space - high ceilings and lots of character. So many beautiful walks and places to visit. A visit to Ravenscar and the magnificent view across Robin Hood's Bay was a highlight.

What a lovely cottage!

The only problem we had was that it was freezing ( in fairness the weather was cold). There was plenty of wood for the fire in the lounge but couldn't get the rest of the house warm. The cottage was in a lovely position mid way between Whitby and Scarborough.

Lovely place to stay , very welcoming on arrival with tea and coffee in the green room, the grounds where amazing with views overlooking the sea long walks and with a fantastic play area for kids and bigger kids , a separate games room with pool , table tennis and table football that we had to ourselves There was also a iron and ironing board and washing machine with airer , a dishwasher and a travel cot for young ones Beautiful open fire and plenty of logs made for a lovely warm evening Completely recommend it and will be returning soon !

We absolutely loved "Butlers Cottage".

Lovely & cosy. Very spacious rooms. Fabulous kitchen/diner, very clean through-out. Set in beautiful grounds. The staff at the hotel were extremely nice & friendly, very helpful & knowledgeable too. (The cottage is set within the hotel grounds). There is even blankets & bowls for the dog (if you have forgotten to bring your dogs own). The heating is run on oil, some people have mentioned the strong smell from it. We found if you kept the door to the downstairs bathroom tightly closed, it was fine.

Easy to get the key, extremely nice man at the hotel reception.

Good location. 5 minutes walk to nearest pub, 20 minutes walk to 2 more. We like a good firm bed but they were too firm even for our taste. Very comfortable lounge, well equipped kitchen. Only a minor point but could do with a more updated, smart TV. Shower in the bathroom was decent although the controls were that stiff my wife couldn’t turn it on. G/floor shower wasn’t as good and there was a really strong smell of heating oil. Somebody needs to put the wheelie bins out or at least let you know what day to put them out, they were both totally full. All sounds a bit negative but the above comments are observations not so much criticism. All in all we had a very good time.

Quiet location and very short distance from the coast path - two important criteria for myself.

All amenities and very friendly staff on site available to give assistance where necessary. Would return to this property.

We arrived to an awful smell from the oil heating which was so strong that we couldn't use the downstairs toilet/shower room.

This also affected my asthma quite badly. We went to enquire about afternoon tea and also eating at the hotel and they had no chef. We couldn't use the golf as overgrown and the tennis court was awful. We were so disappointed as we paid alot to stay at this cottage and really not happy at the cost. On the whole we were very upset as also had a baby with us and the fumes are not good for anyone. We ended up buying candles to try and cover the smell. On the plus side it was comfortable.

We had a lovely week in the cottage, the only thing putting us off returning would be the heating system.

The smell from the oil boiler was quite strong in the downstairs bathroom, slightly in the main bathroom upstairs too. You got used to it, but might still put people off, heating was very good though. Apart from that, a few little details - like could provide a pack of cards, games and selection of books, although we always bring our own. Could do with some more hooks for coats by back door and hooks in main bathroom for dressing gowns etc. Every thing was clean and very comfy. Cottage is in a great location, close to Scarborough, Whitby, Dalby Forest and Robins Hood Bay, plenty of places to eat out particularly the Three Jolly Sailors.

Lovely, warm, and comfortable property.

Staff at the hotel that we had contact with were very friendly too. Set in an excellent position and handy for lots of good walks and country pubs with blazing fires. We hope to visit again soon.

Lovely cottage , impeccably clean and a nice gesture from David , at the Hotel who kindly put a few lamps on so it was really welcoming when we arrived .

Only downside was the very strong smell from the heating oil each time the boiler was on, and the toilet seat in downstairs bathroom was very loose and moved each time it was sat on.l did try to tighten the fittings , but it needs attention from the plumber. Wonderful cottage,and beautifully situated.

Totally unpretentious but spotless, well equipped, and very roomy. Mutts welcome and a refreshing change not to have stickers on everything saying 'keep fido off'. Overall fantastic place, we've just booked again.

Welcome folder we didn’t find until Wednesday and it was useless.

Downstairs shower room where the boiler is smells of oil. Kitchen was poorly fitted. Chrome stools were rusty and the bases dirty. Extraction grill in the bathroom was filthy. No vacuum cleaner and thank goodness we didn’t need to use the ironing board. Selection of glasses was appalling; only two champagne glasses and only one pint beer glass. Baking tray was rusty, dirty and if used would have poisoned us! Thankfully it was replaced. Both toilet seats were broken when we arrived. Patio furniture was positioned immediately by the boiler flue. Garden was overgrown but the grass was cut during the week. Coffee table was in poor condition. No dishwasher tablets. Photographs on the agents website are probably photoshopped because they do not represent reality. Now for the worst point; on the ground floor there is only one window in the lounge through which a thin person could escape in the event of fire. Windows that did open have been sealed closed. On the plus side , staff at the hotel were excellent in helping us to remedy some points but when things are this bad you get fed up with complaining. Needless to say, I would not recommend this cottage.

As always, our Sykes holiday let was lovely ,-very well equipped with freezer, dishwasher and washing machine.

. The rooms were large and comfortable and it was ideally located to enable us to get into Scarborough and Whitby.Apart from a dodgy toilet seat, the property was absolutely lovely though our youngest complained that there was nowhere to hang/ put his clothes just a small beside cabinet in the smallest room- perhaps one of the large armchairs could have gone to the master bedroom to allow space for a wardrobe or chest of drawers. On the downside, unlike other Sykes properties we have stayed in, the welcome folder was very sparse with one page asking for money and the other three a list of phone number , a laminate marked orienteering (with no explanation)and a price list of meals (without menu) that could be had, if available, at the hotel. The welcome pack gave no sense of the area, our access (if any) to the hotel facilities or useful instructions. The house was pretty cold most evenings with instructions on a laminate to say guests were not to try and adjust heating but to go to hotel if we had any issues with heating. We went to the hotel twice - both times it was evening/night time and reception was unstaffed.. We were surprised by the proximity of the cottage to the road and also that the gardens were unmown and flower beds not maintained which seemed strange compared to the quality of the interior.

A great week in a lovely comfortable cottage.

Beautiful cottage in gorgeous surroundings very spacious and immaculate had snow while we where there which just put the icing on the cake surrounding area and places to visit all within easy reach and plenty of wildlife within walking distance so much to see or just relax looking out picture windows plenty of birds rabbits deer and foxes on doorstep best cottage we have stayed in little piece of heaven
