What guests are saying
This cottage was lovely, comfortable and welcoming.
The owners were very friendly and accommodating. It was lovely and cosy with the heating on.
Genuinely the most comfortable beds we've ever experienced outside our own home.
Beautiful cottage, remote, peaceful and well equipped. Shower was lovely. Internet was fine, but having a glow up the day we left. Fantastic owners next door. Garden was lovely. Would definitely stay here again.
What a nice place to stop in large grounds with Rabbits & Squirrels running about surrounded by woodland it's very peaceful.
The bed is lovely and Comfortable the cottage is lovely and clean everthing you need is there. If we was to stop again in this area we would book this place again.A big thankyou to the Owner Libby as we found her Service outstanding Kind Regards Kevin & Roberta
The cottage had everything we needed and was a lovely place to relax, the owners were very helpful and made us feel very welcome.
Would definitely stay again.
We had a fabulous stay at Alwent Mill from the moment we arrived and were greeted by Libby till the moment we left.
It was so very peaceful - a welcome relief in this busy world. The house was great, very well equipped and comfortable. The gardens were stunning - lots of places to relax under the shade among the trees. Libby and Andrew provided lots of very useful information about places to eat and places to visit - all very helpful. Sending it in advance in an e-mail was also a very good idea as it gave us time to plan. Thank you very much to you both.
perfect property, clean and comfortable, great location.
i highly recomd this property.
Lovely place to stay with a beautiful garden.
Peaceful and quiet. Rural but with the owners property next door. Owners ready to help if needed. Plenty of places to see in the surrounding area. Will return
Libby and Andrew were a lovely couple.
Thanks for the Brownies and Wine. The property was clean and in a lovely location, off the beaten track, but close enough for lovely walks and Barnard Castle is just down the road etc. The water pressure is really good, beds comfortable, the only down side was that the fridge is the smallest you can imagine for two to four people, you almost need to shop daily if you are eating in. Despite this we had a wonderful week and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.
Wonderful peaceful cottage for a relaxing break.
We had a wonderful time.
2nd time we have been here. Will definitely be booking again. Lovely area with lots to do. Very comfortable cottage, in an idyllic location
We have had a lovely, relaxing holiday in this property.
The cottage was comfortable and Libby was really welcoming. The property sits in beautiful gardens which we enjoyed looking around. There are plenty of interesting places to visit, all within easy travelling. The information letter that was on the dining table was very helpful too. We all felt very much at home in this property and the wine and brownies on arrival were much appreciated. Thank you.
We had an amazing stay.
The cottage is fantastic - spacious, clean, peaceful and with lots of outdoor space to use. The area is lovely too. Fantastic for walking. Kynren is a must. Durham and Barnard Castle both make for enjoyable days out. Libby, Andrew and family are excellent hosts. We could not have wished for a better stay.
Beautiful and relaxing stay, hosts very nice and friendly with a warm welcome.
Even contacted us to see if we arrived home safely and wished us a happy Easter. One of the best places we have stayed in the north east. Fully recommend and hope to go back in the future
Beautiful cottage, lovely area , very quiet great scenery , amazing walks , and surrounding towns English heritage sites throughout the county , our stay was amazing and we would like to thank Libby and Andrew for having us , we will return
Had a fabulous week, would definitely recommend, so much to do in the area, great place to visit.
Owners Libby and Andrew were very helpful and made some great recommendations. Will definitely come back
Beautiful cottage - very comfortable and well equipped.
Great base for exploring Teesdale and Weardale - lots to do for all ages.
One of the best self-catering places we have stayed in.
The cottage was lovely inside, the location is wonderful and the hosts were extremely helpful.
A most delightful property.
Everything you needed was provided and the location was very peaceful. We thoroughly enjoyed our time there.
Loved the cottage so quiet and peaceful.
The garden is beautiful. Everything you need for a self catering holiday. The location is perfect for traveling around this lovely part of Britain. Will certainly think about returning. Thank you Libby and Andrew.
Lovely location, secluded and peaceful.
It was pleasant just to stay at the cottage. The cottage itself is nicely furnished and equipped, warm and welcoming.
We booked Alwent Mill from 2nd - 9th August and thoroughly enjoyed our stay here.
The cottage was perfect for our needs and the boys loved the garden, particularly the stream at the bottom of the garden. The location is fantastic and the hosts were extremely helpful. We would definitely stay here again.
Thank you for a very enjoyable stay at your charming cottage.
We had a very good time, especially sitting outside in the beautiful garden having a glass of wine, as well as visiting Raby Castle and the Bowes Museum. Dad has mobility issues, so the cottage was ideal for getting around. Libby was very welcoming and made some delicious brownies, plus she left us a bottle of white wine, which was very kind.
This cottage is in a beautiful and peaceful setting, every window had a view of the gardens, and even though the owners resided next door, it felt very private.
The owners were there to give us a very warm welcome, and gave us tips on places to visit as it was our first time to this area. It was a haven for wildlife which suited us perfectly, and I'm sure we will visit again, and recommend to friends.
We had a lovely break the cottage had everything we wanted peace and quiet its setting is perfect .
You have easy access to nice pubs beautiful walks . Thank you to Libby and family for letting us stay .
A very nice cottage in amazing surroundings.
Awake every morning to the sound of the nearby babbling brook and bird song, what more could you wish for? All in all a very nice place in a wonderful part of Yorkshire. Whilst there, we visited the local village and tea-room, and also had a day at Raby Castle in Staindrop. With a look at castle life past and present and of course a "brew, loo and a view" I would heartily recommend Raby Castle in Staindrop DL2 3AH (for satnav). I wish everyone happy holidays wherever they are visiting in this country because for me, with or without the sunshine we have some of the best country-side in the world!
Very welcoming hosts Libby and Andrew, very personable and helpful, great care for their guests.
The cottage is lovely, great location with easy reach of many visitor spots, very comfortable especially beds and sofas, nice and warm and with full facilities, big Freeview TV, good bathroom, fully equipped kitchen, we were very comfortable and if we are up this way again we would certainly come back here. Recommended for a lovely break.
This is a delightful, cosy, warm and comfortable cottage set in spacious grounds in a rural location.
Everything inside the cottage was perfect for us, the owners were attentive to our needs but not at all intrusive. We would love to stay again when we are next visiting the area. .
We enjoyed our stay at this lovely cottage.
Beautiful surrounding's. On arrival a lovely warm welcome from Libby. Thankyou for the wine and lovely brownie's much appreciated
A lovely property in beautiful, quiet gardens.
Well equipped and in a great location for visiting many of County Durham’s attractions.
Had a lovely week at Alwent Mill.
Peaceful, beautiful surroundings in the owners grounds. Owners non obtrusive & welcoming. Beds comfy. Great location for visits to Barnard's Castle, Richmond, Bishops Auckland where we saw the fabulous Kynren show, High Force etc. Owners left some great information about everything in the area to visit. We relaxed, enjoyed the area & the property & will visit again. I have some mobility issues & found the property safe & reassuring being all on one level.
A really peaceful and relaxing place.
Beautiful surroundings. Cottage lovely. We found some great places to eat too.
We enjoyed our break at Alwent Mill Cottage, which was comfortable and well appointed.
It was so quiet, and the extensive gardens were lovely.
Lovely cosy cottage in amazing grounds, Libby was very friendly and helpful

Excellent cottage in beautiful surroundings.
Comfortable and well equipped..Nice welcome from the owner. Definitely recommend this cottage .
A lovely cottage in a beautiful, secluded location.
Perfect for walking, relaxing and visiting nearby attractions. Highly recommended!
A lovely cottage with everything you need including the use of a large garden which was wonderful for my grandchild to explore.
The owner was very helpful and friendly giving advice as to where to visit in the area. Would definitely visit again.
Really nice cottage would recommend in a lovely location with plenty of interesting and varied places to visit close by.
If you are considering this area Alwent Mill will not disappoint, lovely thankyou.
We had the most wonderful time at Alwent Mill Cottage.
Everything was just perfect for us, lovely clean cottage and everything that you could want was with-in the Cottage. Lots of very nice places to visit and all with-in easy driving distances. Lovey country side with great views. Mr & Mrs Hampson the owners of Alwent Mill Cottage live next door so are on hand if they are required but you don’t really see them, you are left alone to enjoy your break. We had a wonderful experience staying at Alwent Mill Cottage.
Our 2nd stay at this lovely cottage in a beautiful setting.
Well equipped throughout and wonderfully comfy beds. Owners so very welcoming. It won't be our last stay here.
Lovely, comfortable property in beautiful, well kept, surroundings.
A real home from home.
The cottage is lovely, with access to the owner's surrounding gardens and a real sense of calm and isolation from the world around.
Owners were very welcoming, present enough to be helpful but not so that we were particularly aware of them most of the time. There is a lot to do locally, but we found ourselves happy for much of the time to be relaxing in and around the cottage itself. Planning to go again.
A lovely location - we enjoyed walking around the grounds.
The location was brilliant for Upper Force waterfalls , Raby Castle and the Bowles museum. We also visited Whitby Abbey. The entrance could do with some signage that you can see from the road - we were looking for the mill stone that's on the website. We also struggled locking up as all the locks were badly fitted (we obviously weren't the only ones as one of the keys was bent!). However we loved waiting up to rabbits on the lawn! A lovely location that I would recommend.
We had a fantastic few days, (wish it could have been longer).
The position of the mill was beautiful and so tranquil. There was everything we needed, could not fault it.
We had a fabulous stay at Alwent Mill-such a lovely cottage with everything you could possibly need.
Our children loved the garden and it was a great base for exploring the area. Very much appreciated the welcome from Libby and the delicious brownies-we’d love to come back!
Lovely cottage, ideal for our holiday.
Friendly owner, thank you for the advice regarding great walks, also for the brownies and wine.
Alwent Mill is a lovely cottage with everything you need for your stay, it was beautiful.
We were welcomed at the door when arriving and even though it was raining we still stood at talked about the attractions and things happening within the area that week. Although we had every weather you could think of in one week we still thoroughly enjoyed the whole week. Thank you Libby for checking to make sure we were OK through the week as weather was so bad there
Very nice cottage for a peaceful break.
Would go again
What a lovely place, The garden was unreal very relaxing and definitely be booking again.
We had a lovely peaceful break in beautiful surroundings.
Libby greeted us with cake and wine and was very helpful telling us about places to visit would definitely like to visit again
We were warmly welcomed, with wine and home made tray bake and immediately felt the calm and beauty of the property.
Alwent Mill is in an idyllic setting, in a large informal garden bordered by a river. It was an ideal place for us to be reunited with our family after 9 months of lock-downs as the cottage had outdoor furniture, children's well-loved outdoor equipment and outdoor space, with a barbecue. We found lots of interesting places to visit, even with some Coronavirus restrictions still in place and we enjoyed our first coffee in the outdoor cafe at Raby Castle after discovering the walled gardens there. Every drive out rewarded us with stunning views and quiet; such an undiscovered landscape. The cottage itself was thoughtfully furnished, with all the kitchen equipment needed, a decent sized bathroom and comfortable bed. We will be returning!
Beautiful cottage, perfect location for a hide away holiday.
Children loved the garden and bike rides. Libby and family were very welcoming and friendly. Great location for so many different attractions. Will definitely be staying again.
The place was so peaceful, and the grounds were beautiful to sit out in, there were pheasants running all over, but it was only about 20 mins from nearest village, we really enjoyed it.
Thanks
Alwent Mill was a cosy, comfortable cottage, with an amazing garden , we were made very welcome.
The surrounding area is beautiful plenty to see and do. We had an amazing time and will hopefully return soon
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Alwent Mill.
The cottage was very comfortable and clean, the owner Libby was very friendly and although the cottage was next to her home she was not intrusive. The location was ideal with plenty of places to visit and see. The gardens of the property are lovely with a stream at the bottom of the garden. We would definitely recommend staying at Alwent Mill and would love to stop here again when visiting the area.
We had a lovely time at alwent mill cottage.
The cottage was actually bigger than expected. Libby was very welcoming and helpful and the cottage was very clean and had everything we needed. A very relaxing week away from the stresses of work at theses strange times
I t was a lovely spot.
The owners were very friendly and helpful. Grounds beautiful. good centre for walking in Teesdale and Swaledale. Maps and walking books provided in the cottage were very helpful. Thoroughly enjoyed our holiday.
Our 2nd visit to this cosy, peaceful cottage in a wonderful, interesting setting.
We had everything we needed. Even in January there are so many places to visit, over the moors to Alston or Reeth, Bowes Museum or the Royal Navy Museum at Hartlepool.
Very well equipped cottage in beautiful surroundings.
If you want a peaceful, restful holiday, this is the place to stay. Beautiful scenery not far away. A good holiday.
Cosy cottage in a wonderful setting, very quiet and peaceful.
So many places to visit and very friendly people in an area of wonderful scenery
We could not find any fault whatsoever with the cottage.
Everything we needed was supplied. The owners were very friendly and provided plenty of information on the surrounding area. As we wrote in their comment book - Perfect nothing else to add. Will definitely return next year.
The cottage patio had lovely views of the garden and the beds where very comfortable.
The shower was very small with a high step in, there was a small ice box in very, very tiny fridge. Unusual having a wardrobe in the living room as a cleaning storage unit. Not sure why I picked this cottage as normally we like modern cottages!!!
lovely cottage, very friendly owners.
lovely area.
Lovely cottage in a beautiful & peaceful setting with everything we needed.
Libby, the owner, is very welcoming & helpful with tips on the surrounding areas which was great as we are planning to relocate to this area!
The three nights that we recently spent in the cottage at Alwent Mill were a joy.
The cottage was really clean, tastefully furnished and thoughtfully equipped - but it was the spacious, rural setting of the cottage that we particularly enjoyed. Our visits in the area included the stunning Raby Castle nearby, Durham and Newcastle. The owners of the cottage, who lived next door, we're welcoming but unobtrusive. Thank you to them and to you, Sykes Cottages, for having such a cottage on your books. We hope very much to stay there again.
It is a super cottage set in glorious suroundings.
If peace, quiet and tranquility are what you need, then this is the perfect place. There are many places of interest to visit as well as good food to eat........... if you do not wish to cook. We ate out every day. It is a perfect place to stay whatever your age and the owners were so helpful and kind...... and we are in our seventies. Sue and Harold
Cottage was very clean and had everything anyone could want we especially like the shower cubicle as we can't climb in the bath.
Hosts were very friendly and helpful. Overall an excellent cottage and venue would definitely stay again.
Very nice owner.
Lovely location, owners very helpful, all you would need for holiday, everything thought of and the cottage was imaculate through out, very pleased.
Alwent Mill Cottage is simply idyllic, the location alone is worth the price.
If anyone asked me whether they should book it, I would say yes do it now, immediately before someone else gets it!
We had a wonderful time at Alwent Mill Cottage.
Like. Y and Andrew were so helpful and have certainly thought of their guests comfort. we most certainly will be back as we really enjoyed our stay.
Excellent location for peace and quiet.
"Lived in" sofas - so comfortable to relax in!
it is worth going to this cottage just to sleep in the bed.
