  • "An ideal stay for quiet and relaxation."

Our dog is terrified of fireworks, so any time in early November is an ordeal for him. This year we booked a week at Norah's Nook. The property is so remote and peaceful that he was completely fine for the first time in years! Not a single firework to be heard from inside - perfect! Of course, that peace and quiet comes at a small price - if you want to get to a 'local' town or tourist attraction, be prepared for quite a bit of driving, and on narrow, winding country roads, too. We spent a fair amount on petrol getting around. But that's fine - the isolation and calm of the farm is well worth it - and there are pigs, sheep and alpacas to feed, too (animal food is provided!) You're digitally-isolated, too: there's absolutely no mobile signal to be had at the cottage, and the wi-fi occasionally cuts out for a short while (only a few minutes at a time, we found.) But when it IS connected, it's good and fast - a healthy 45+Mbps or more (compared to a rubbish 3Mbps or less in some other properties advertising 'free wifi'.) It's not the super-fast 450+Mbps we get at home, but given the challenges of getting decent internet connectivity to more remote locations, this one is very good, I think. And the farmhouse has a landline for emergencies, too. The cottage itself is well-maintained and nicely presented. The bed is very comfortable, the lounge is cosy (with a good-sized TV) and it has a well-equipped kitchen. There was my pet-hate of no bolts or locks on the bathroom doors, but on this occasion, no stars deducted for this because everything else was excellent. So excellent, in fact, that we've booked again for next Bonfire Night week!

The cottage is amazing it's sits on about 40 acres of farm land and is one of 2 cottages and the original farm house where the hosts live. There are animals to pet and feed all very friendly the Alpacas are adorable Bill, Ben and Bob come trotting over to see you when ever you walk by. A handy tub of food is available to use which is in the container out side the cottage. There are also sheep cows horses and chickens. There are loads of trails to walk we mostly enjoyed walking round the farm with our small dog. It is a working farm but we could go anywhere without restrictions. The cottage is lovely with generous touches. Fresh eggs from the farm chocolate and prosecco. It is very comfortable we even lit the log burner one evening with sticks and logs supplied by the hosts. This cottage is a fine example of how a holiday let should be run, attention to detail is exceptional the hosts who live and work on the farm always stop what they are doing to chat and enjoy their guests nothing is to much trouble. We really enjoyed our few days here and we will most definitely be back. Thank you Dave and Sarita Phil Rita and Poppy.

  • "Norah's Nock cottage is well equipped and very nice."

Well stocked kitchen. We loved the wood burning fire in the living room. The owner is friendly and welcoming. The cottage is well situated, and near to some local market towns, with an hours traveling you can get to Scarborough or Whitby. There are lots of local walks too, but to south you to have to cross a stream on stepping stones. We ate at the pub in Gillamoor on two nights great meals. Only give 3 stars for two reasons, would have given more, 1 - My wife is visually impaired, there are three steps (two outside to get into cottage and one into kitchen), none are marked. The two outside are a problem as there is no exterior lighting. There is a sensored light facing into the court yard on the cottage next door, but was not turned on and the courtyard and steps area is pitch black on a night, this may be ok in summer but not in winter. 2 - site advertises "Broadband / WiFi". This does not exist. Wi-Fi is provided by a Devolo wi-fi repeater which is out of range/or very limit of range of main hub. We had wi-fi for part of first night. No signal for rest of stay. Cottage needs a second hub fitted as there is no cellular signal here either. We had no way of contacting our family back home. We had to go to pub in Gillamoor to get wi-fi/cellular signal.

  • "This lovely little hideaway is on a remote farm with absolutely no mobile signal, absolutely dependent on wifi for everything The owners of the cottage were very friendly and approachable."

While we were there, the wifi had a major wobble, but they worked to solve the problem as quickly as possible. Norah's Nook is small and cosy, with a bath as well as a shower, which was very welcome after a long walk! There is also 2 loos, which was brilliant. The Kitchen is fairly well equipped, and the freezer is in a shed/utility room across the yard. There is an icebox in the fridge, though. There is no washing machine. On arrival the gift of eggs (laid by the chickens on the farm), milk, cookies, and prosecco was most welcome. We took half a dozen eggs away with us when we left. The info said they were for sale, but the owner of the farm didn't charge us. The wonderful thing about Norah's Nook is the animals on the farm - the aforementioned chickens, sheep, cows, ponies, and Alpacas! Both Norah's Nook and Erica's 'eaven have boxes outside with food for the animals in, and occupants are invited to feed the animals. We had the alpacas eating out of our hands - wonderful! You need a car to get to most places, but we found a railway station half an hour drive away in Castle Moor, and were able to catch a train from there to Whitby for the day. Car parking is free. There are several walks in the area, some which start from the cottage. We would definitely recommend this cottage, and hope to stay there again at some point in the future.

It was darling and much better equipped than other cottages we have rented. The bed was so comfy, too!. The owners went out of their way to be helpful and friendly while always maintaining social distance, which was essential given the present circumstances. They even left a starter pack that included eggs from their hens (and there was a variety of types), a bottle of Prosecco, and doggie treats (sadly, no dog with us ... so we left them for the next residents). Given its rural location, the WiFi was surprisingly fast. Full marks. We will be back.

KIRKBYMOORSIDE

Pickering 6 miles; Helmsley 5 miles.

The attractive old market town of Kirkbymoorside lies on the edge of the North York Moors National Park, in between the towns of Helmsley and Pickering. It is a charming place, full of Yorkshire character, and is the centre for the local farms and villages. Visitors will find a variety of shops from tea rooms, pubs and restaurants to antique shops, while there is a market day on Wednesday. The excellent walking and magnificent scenery of the National Park are close by, as are the picturesque villages of Hutton-le-Hole and Lastingham.
