  • "Had a lovely stay at this cottage."

First things first, the bed (one person staying) was so comfy. Always a plus when away. Two fabulous king sized bedrooms to chose from with lovely views over the green. Although the twin room was cute too. It was a plus to have two bathrooms. The parking was great. Outside the front door every night. Not always easy with North Yorkshire cottages. The whole village was very quiet. Didn’t try the Bayhorse until my last night for a meal, (delicious) wished I’d popped in sooner. Definitely book as it’s popular. Found that the Stoneygate cafe also served good food. I visited Mainsgill Farm shop twice. My advice would be to go mid morning or mid afternoon as the turning right onto the busy A66 is daunting. It is a breeze coming back. Visited loads of castles and museums. Would highly recommend Bernard Castle Castle and Bowes Museum. Also Richmondshire Museum too. The cottage has Amazon Prime and Netflix so I managed to get through all episodes of Clarksons Farm (fantastic show) and Bridgerton, lol. Would recommend a stay, you will not be disappointed. A beautiful part of the UK.

Thankyou Gay for that great feedback. So glad you enjoyed our cottage and found lots to do .We look forward to welcoming you back Chris Property Owner

  • "Exceptional host and perfect base for a Yorkshire holiday."

Accommodation is really well set up, with a roaring real fire, very good internet connection and dog friendly lay out. The village has everything you need, country walks, a couple of great pubs nearby and access to the A66 and A1 for trips further afield. Highly recommended and great value for money.

  • "This is a beautiful cottage sat in a lovely quiet village."

We would like to say a big thank you to the owners for their welcome pack a bottle of wine, cookies, tea coffee and sugar very kind. We would suggest a small bowl for the kitchen sink so you can wash items that don’t go in the dishwasher so you don’t waste too much hot water in the very deep sink We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and loved reading about the cottage’s history

Well it our absolute pleasure and so glad you enjoyed your stay. Thankyou for the nudge to try and get a bowl to fit into the sink. Property Owner

  • "We had a very comfortable stay at 56 The Green."

The cottage is beautifully situated overlooking the large village green. The beds are super comfy and bedrooms very well appointed. Although the weather was superb, the cottage stays cool - we actually lit the open fire twice in the evening, which made the sitting room lovely and cosy. Thank you very much to Chris for kindly forwarding on an item I left behind. Worthy of note is that dogs are confined to downstairs. Also tall people, such as my husband, remember to duck thru the downstairs doors, lintels low - my husband kinda got the message after banging his head several times!! We have visited this area many times and love it - a stay at 56 The Green will not disappoint and we are very happy to recommend it.

Hi Trudi Thankyou for your kind comments and recommendation. So glad you enjoyed your stay. Property Owner

  • "We found the cottage a delightful place to stay."

Kitchen has modern appliances and plenty of crockery and utensils. The house was earned by the electric radiators which thankfully to the really good weather weren't needed much. The welcome pack told us all we needed to know- thank you. We found our neighbours very friendly and welcomed a chat plus their two dogs Chelsea and Ellie. Ravenscroft has a huge village green and is a delightfully quiet place yet there's good access to the sights of North Yorkshire. A meal at the Bay Horse pub is a must. Nearby is a vast farm shop called Maingill with animals including camels, ostriches and much more. The cottage is probably one of the most comfortable we've stayed in. We will certainly hope to visit again.

Thank you so much for your feedback about your stay at 56 The Green. We are so pleased you enjoyed your stay and look forward to welcoming your back at some point in the not-too-distant future. Property Owner

  • "We had a lovely stay in 56 The Green."

The cottage is very comfortable and clean. The sofas in the lounge are as comfy as they look and having a real fire made it so cosy. The kitchen has everything you need and we ate at the breakfast bar rather than using the dining room. The two main bedrooms are big and the beds very comfortable and both have lovely views over the green. Having the bathroom and the downstairs shower room and toilet is a big bonus. The welcome booklet has to be one of the best I’ve seen. Lots and lots of essential information in it. Helpful info for the house and lots of suggestions of places to visit. We can highly recommend Raby Castle and High Force Falls. Richmond and Barnard Castle are great too. Being across the green from the local pub was a real bonus. I can thoroughly recommend the food there and have to say the staff and locals made us feel very welcome. I would like to thank the hosts for making their cottage available to us holidaymakers and also thank John, the caretaker, who called to let us know that the property was ready for us ahead of time. I would happily stay in the property again and would highly recommend it to others. Just a very tiny word of warning - the doors are quite low. My husband bumped his head twice on the door into the kitchen. (What is it they say? Once is a mistake, twice is…

We so appreciate your review. We hope all our guests have a good time at 56 The Green and are so pleased you enjoyed our home. We're glad caretaker ,John was so very helpful and obliging. We appreciate his help. We hope very much that you will use the cottage again. Next time you visit, your husband will find a warning sign above the kitchen door! I'm not blessed with shortness, so I've encountered that door lintel a couple of times myself!......Such is life in an old, quirky house. Property Owner

  • "Wonderful cottage with great attention to detail for everything we needed."

Cottage was a little cold on arrival but with overnight temperature of -6 not surprising. Owner quickly rectified. Most comfortable beds ever in 35 years of self catering a lovely base for our stay. Local pub the Bay Horse does great food and very dog friendly. Would love to return.

Thank you so much for your very generous feedback. 56 The Green is very much a family home and we are so pleased to be able to share it with our visitors. We're glad you enjoyed the Bay Horse, which is proving extremely popular in the village. Property Owner

  • "Lovely house, and bigger than we'd expected."

Started off a bit cold, but heating and the open fire sorted that out. There were a few bits that need finishing off, like some skirting boards, but nothing that had any impact on our holiday. Great location for both the coast and the dales - we had a great week, and would be happy to book again.

Thanks so much for your feedback, Mr Bennet. It is much appreciated. We're so pleased you soon found 56 The Green to be a cosy cottage after some adjustments. As you know you were welcomed as our first guest and we, like you were getting used to the system during very cold weather. Incidentally all skirtings duly fixed! Property Owner

The property

Overlooking the village green in idyllic Ravensworth, North Yorkshire is this lovely, traditional dales cottage, 56 The Green.

Dating mainly from the early 18th-century, and in common with much of the village, this delightful, dales cottage is built of stone from the nearby castle ruins.

Enjoying open views across the green, the cottage is within easy reach of the stunning Yorkshire Dales National Park to the south and beautiful Weardale and Teesdale to the north.

56 the Green is a fantastic, pet-friendly choice for a family or group of up to six people and benefits from ample roadside parking.

The seating area to the front of the property has views across the village green, whilst to the rear, there is an enclosed courtyard garden where visitors can relax after enjoying the sights or one of the lovely walks in and around Ravensworth and the surrounding area.

The property has been lovingly restored and boasts an inviting sitting room with plush seating, a Smart TV and coal fire, a haven to relax in after a day exploring the area.

There is a well-equipped contemporary kitchen for rustling up your best dishes ready to enjoy in the dining room with well-appointed seating area.

Off the kitchen is a sleek shower room with its extra-large shower cubicle, where you can wash away the day’s adventures.

Head upstairs and you will find a carefully planned, beautiful bathroom where you can freshen up, taking a soak in the bath with its skylight window between beams salvaged from Ravensworth castle in bygone years, or by taking a refreshing shower.

There are three well-appointed bedrooms, each furnished distinctively to a high standard; the master bedroom with its king-sized bed and solid oak furniture, overlooks the village green, as does the second bedroom which also has a king-sized bed along with a chez lounge and an original early 18th-century fireplace.

Dating from at least the early 17th century, the third bedroom is tucked away in the oldest part of the house; with roof beams salvaged from Ravensworth castle, this bedroom features two single beds.

The village of Ravensworth boasts many lovely walks, the ruins of the medieval castle.

The recently refurbished Bay Horse public house with its range of hand pulled beers and local cuisine is a short stroll away and Stoneygate farm shop and café, approximately half a mile walk or drive.

A short walk across open fields leads to the Mains Gill farm shop, café, and petting farm; nearby are other welcoming hostelries and eateries.

For a wider selection of attractions head to nearby Richmond or Barnard Castle each with its castle to explore and many walks and attractions, including the Richmond Golf Club and Catterick racecourse, and in Barnard Castle the Bowes Museum and Buttermarket.

Further afield, venture into the Yorkshire Dales National Park and visit the Forbidden Corner or Bolton Castle and Herriot Country, the Wensleydale Creamery Aysgarth Falls or the Druids Temple.

56 The Green is an ideal choice for those wanting to explore this beautiful part of the country with the beautiful cities of Durham and York an easy drive away, along with Yorkshire coast North York Moors and the Lake District.

About the location

RICHMOND

Barnard Castle 10 miles; Leyburn 12 miles.

Situated at the entrance to Swaledale, the ancient market town of Richmond stands on a prominent hilltop site to the north of the River Swale. Its cobbled streets and narrow alleys or 'wynds' enshrine over nine centuries of busy history and unique character. The town grew up around its castle, a Norman fortress dating back to 1071, famously situated high above the river - indeed the name Richmond is derived from 'Riche-mont' meaning 'strong hill'. Today there are wonderful walks to be enjoyed such as the Castle Walk - a dramatic terrace walk beneath the castle walls - or alternatively walk alongside the River Swale where there are parks, safe paddling areas and small waterfalls to enjoy. Within the town, narrow streets and alleys radiate from the cobbled Market Place (which has a weekly market and monthly farmers’ market) and there are numerous shops, pubs and restaurants to enjoy. The town flourished in the 18th and 19th centuries and the resulting elegant Georgian architecture lines many of the old streets. The Georgian Theatre is one of the oldest surviving theatres in the country with visitors enjoying its regular productions all year round.
