  • "We needed to find somewhere for over the bonfire night period, this Cottage was perfect."

The owner Keith lives on site in the farmhouse and is always connectable and very helpful. Having been told about our dogs fear of fireworks he went out of his way to find out if and when there were any nearby, we were then prepared, not that we heard many anyway. All in all, a very enjoyable, relaxing and peaceful stay in a lovely location.

Thank you, Graham, So pleased the wilds of ‘just outside’ the village made Bonfire/Fireworks night less stressful for you all and your pet Property Owner

Our daughter uses a wheelchair and requires hoisting (we brought our own hoist) for all transfers. The space in the cottage was excellent and worked well for us. If we could change one thing it would be to continue the hard flooring into the bedrooms.

the owner was very pleasant. we found slugs in the kitchen on our first night. they had probably crawled under the door. there are adhesive strips gardeners use to deter slugs and snails. one of these across the bottom of the door frame should solve the problem. we had difficulty finding the place at first but the owner cut the grass covering the sign later that day. there wasn't many leaflets of places to go and instructions for use of appliances was in short supply.

and the horses a pleasure to watch. The property is warm and comfortable and very well designed for those with mobility issues (lots of space to get the wheelchair round, smooth floors, accessible shower etc). The bedrooms are spacious with plenty of storage space (but sadly no mirrors to do our make-up), the beds very comfortable and the quality of the pillows and bedding was excellent. Tea, coffe and sugar and a local newspaper were very welcome on arrival as was the well-equipped games box for the couple of wet days we had. We are looking forward to returning next year Thank you to Keith for being a helpful and friendly host.

. massive amounts of space for me to move around in, the bathroom is huge with a bath or shower, yes there are no rails as a previous reviewer noted but I personally don't require them and find them more a hinderance in places...the location is great as straight on motorway to access many places and the coast is also not too far... all in all another fab week and here's to hopefully returning again very soon for another visit

Settees soft saggy leather, most uncomfortable, long corridor with rugs, trip hazard! Front door lintel very high when exiting in electric chair frightening.uneven flags to front door.on the whole expensive and upsetting, did tell owner our thoughts, politely but he told us property not listed for disability occupation so sykes cottages should look again when a prospective customer googles for disabled accommodation

I was sorry to note how disappointed you have been and offer the following response. Our 3 holiday homes are not specifically set up to accommodate guests with significant mobility restrictions, there are no high level toilets nor suspended sinks and the shower and spa bath don’t have wall mounted hand rails and we advise guests before they arrive that suction hand rails cannot be used, we’ve simply ensured where possible that accommodation is on one level and routes between rooms are wide leading to 1 m wide doors. The original Horse Stable allowed for a very large bathroom with a 1m square accessible shower and for which we do offer the loan of a shower chair and toilet frame subject to guests own assessment as to suitability for them, both rejected by you. The two sofas are leather and low! As shown in Sykes photos and we’ve also provided a Parker-Knoll upright armchair which has pleased many guests. When I visited to help you set up Netflix/Prime on the TV, you weren't using the higher armchair but the low sofa. The entrance door does have a 30mm threshold bar which can be navigated safely if slowly, I have however managed now to make a short ramp inside which helps but doesn’t intrude into the passageway. Yes, there are carpet runners in place when guests using wheelchairs arrive, it’s only sensible and essential on a rural site but I will have the passageway tiled at seasons end. Property Owner

We do thank our guests for the positive feedback and the undermanned in which the access issues have been outlined. The bathroom floor is tiled and the builders used non-slip tiles, but tiles and water will always be of some risk. There are no grab rails and we do advise guests that suction rails mustn’t be used. We do now offer a shower chair which guests must assess for suitability themselves as we are not qualified to do so - we don’t advertise as holiday homes for the disabled, but we have tried to make two of the homes as accessible as possible. • "The location of the cottage is excellent if you need to relax in peace because it is quite far away from the road so it's very quiet."

The cottage owner is very welcoming and provided us with all the information we needed about the area. He also allowed us to change the booking to the other cottage when we realised that the cottage (Cooper) we originally booked didn't have a walk-in shower which could have proved difficult for my husband who has mobility problem. Pottowe Cottage is very roamy, clean and just what we wanted really. The only downside about the holiday is that the cottage doesn't have a wi-fi connection so you are totally cut off from the rest of the world. My daughter who was working on her dissertation and needed the internet could not do anything so had to go to York to work instead. The cottage owner has actually got a wi-fi connection and perhaps in future (just a suggestion), they provide a wi-fi key to the cottages for their guest to tap in - it would not cost them extra to provide this. The area is rich in history and there are so many interesting places to visit - abbey, priory, ruined castles, historic houses and lovely seaside towns. We visited Saltburn-by-the-way which is a beautiful place. Castle Howard is the one not to miss. Thank you, Sykes Cottages!

About the location

Great Ayton 3 miles; Saltburn-by-the–Sea 14 miles.

Stokesley is an attractive, elegant, historic market town which was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, with many interesting Georgian and Victorian buildings. The River Leven flows through the town and is crossed by the ancient Pack Horse Bridge. Levenside provides visitors with a peaceful riverside walk, well planted with trees, as a contrast to the bustle of the High Street. The town has a distinguished wide cobbled main street lined with Georgian and Regency buildings. It is well served with shops, banks, public houses and restaurants and the weekly Friday markets are held on the main square. Just off the market square is the Church of St Peter & St Paul which has woodwork carved by the Mouseman of Kilburn. Surrounded by the Cleveland Hills and close to the northern edge of the North York Moors, Stokesley provides an ideal base from which to explore the Yorkshire Dales, the heather clad North Yorkshire Moors and the pretty market towns of Great Ayton, Northallerton and Thirsk. The seaside spa resort of Saltburn is 30 mins drive away whilst Whitby, Runswick Bay and Robin Hoods Bay are within easy reach.
