I would recommend two light boxes in the roof to simulate sky lights! The barn is dog friendly but a notice by the door indicates dogs are not allowed in the bedroom! The only way to get to the gravel with table and chairs at the rear is through the bedroom!? This barn needs a rethink for its interior design and comfort!

The shower was maybe the best we’ve used when we’ve been away. The outside area was very adequate with lovely views. The bed was comfortable & we slept very well. The location was good - we walked into Ruswarp one day & Whitby the next & shops, chip shop & pubs were within walking distance. We met the owner & she was very friendly. We have rebooked.

Piping hot water.Really appreciated the heated towel rail! Well equipped. Spar grocer, butcher, baker and pub/hotel within walking distance. Good grassed area at the rear- I could let the dog off the lead although would recommend a tether if there are people next door. Road surface over the Echo Hill bridge and under the trees is dodgy if your vehicle sits lower to the ground. I thoroughly recommend Lowdale Barns.

It is surrounded by amazing countryside with many places to walk. We took our dog and although the garden is not fully enclosed it wasn’t a problem as we put him on a long lead so he could move around relatively freely. The owners were very friendly and their property was on site so if any problems did occur it would be easy to contact them.

Also should be more private so you can enjoy the outdoor space. We found the barn to be quite dark, due to lack of natural light?. Couldn't understand why the East barn has 2 skylights in the roof & the west barn has none ?

The barn is grade 2 listed the openings could only be replaced with what was originally there but we are looking into other ways to get air flow in to the barn. We are sadly governed by what the conservation officers will allow. Property Owner

  • "We have stayed in this cottage, and the one next door many Timex now and would not hesitate to return."

We do however have a couple of comments to make. While the cottage is thankfully pet friendly, the outdoor space is not. The seating area at the rear is very open, there is a public footpath running along the length of the seating area, which is not a problem, but if the seating area, of both properties was fenced off, not blocked, but a physical barrier, doesn't need to be very high, then you could be out there and let your pet be untethered. We think that the outside seating is important due to there being very little natural light in the living room. The second point would be the bedroom. It is very comfortable, but would benefit from better blinds on the door and window. At this time of year it gets light very early and so does the bedroom, better blinds would be beneficial.

If there is one criticism it would be that there was no enclosed garden space for our elderly lurcher, it’s not great when you have to take her for a walk on a lead in your Pj’s before 6am because she needs to go out! Great place for a couple.

It's a shame the living area has no window in the back wall to take advantage of the lovely views and to let in much needed natural light (we needed the lights on all the time). A few touches would have made it more comfortable such as a rug on the lounge floor (we found the laminate very slippery) and curtains in the bedroom to reduce the light in the morning which woke us very early.

The only let down was the interior lighting. Due to the layout of the property there is little natural light and on a dull day the interior lights have to be switched on. The existing interior lighting is really not bright enough to address this problem, and reading is quite difficult. Cleaning cloths for the kitchen would be useful to keep the surfaces clean. To be requested to strip the bed on departure is unusual and I wonder if the holiday maker should be expected to do this ?

  • "We loved our stay at Lowdale Barns West."

A spacious cottage for 2 in a quiet setting surrounded by countryside and within easy reach of the coast and the Yorkshire Moors. Tastefully furnished, and one of the most comfortable beds we've ever slept in. Almost everything we could have needed was provided and we were very pleased with the welcome pack and other extras left for us - the bottle of Prosecco was a lovely surprise! The underfloor heating kept us cosy and was easy to operate, as were all the kitchen appliances. If we were going to be picky, a mop and bucket would be a good addition to the cleaning materials (which were otherwise excellent) to make it easier to quickly clean the floors, especially as we have a dog. Overall, we were pleased with the cleanliness of the place, though there were quite a few dust bunnies under the bed! One other slight issue was the temperature of the water in the shower, which we got the hang of eventually but was never what you would call hot. However, this was a minor niggle and we were sad to leave to come home. We'd definitely stay there again.

It was our first visit to Lowdale Barns West and we found it exceptionally clean and comfortable. It was easy to find following the directions that were given. The lovely owner left us some beautiful flowers she’d grown in her garden and wine to enjoy while there. The cottage was located in a lovely village just a short walk to the railway station with trains going into Whitby and beyond including the North Yorkshire Steam Railway (pick up the train at the same station in Whitby). There’s also a Park and Ride into Whitby just a short drive away. I can’t really find any negatives other than the water for the shower could have been a bit warmer and last longer but it wasn’t a huge issue for us. We’ll definitely be booking again for another stay.

The cottage itself was clean and well presented, we have stayed in the next door cottage in the past and expected no less. However, a couple of things have put us off revisiting this property. While the equipment provided was in good condition, and it may seem picky, but there was not a suitable (for 2) casserole dish, there was just one individual pie dish, the instructions for the microwave were not for the microwave in the property, and maybe the main point would be the heat, or lack of, in the shower. We thought this was just in our cottage but we asked the people in the adjacent cottage and they said the same. We had a good stay in Sleights and would likely return, but not to this cottage.

The hot water of the shower only lasted minutes before it started to cool down leaving us little time to wash hair and enjoy it after a days walking etc. The duvet wasn't sufficient to cover two adults in a double bed and the pillows were extremely flat and, with no additional pillows, resulted in us purchasing 2 more pillows to aid sleep.

  • "This cottage was very disappointing."

It had absolutely no atmosphere and was not at all homely. A rug in each room would make a good addition to make the place look less like a box. It certainly wasn’t furnished to the high standard as described by Sykes, but was furnished with very basic items from IKEA. The sofa and chair in the living area were extremely hard and uncomfortable as was the mattress which was so soft you could both feel and hear the springs when you moved. The pillows had some kind of inner protector which made it sound like you were sleeping on a packet of crisps. The 2 pull down blinds in the bedroom do not stop the light coming in and as there are lights outside each door it is difficult to get off to sleep. Black out blinds would improve matters. We only had contact with the owner when we arrived and she had to go into the next cottage to borrow their pint of milk. On entering the cottage, we found a packet of Blue Riband biscuits which we thought was a bit mean after reading some previous reviews and compared with other greeting gifts we have received. We also found she had provided just 1 toilet roll. There was no toilet brush which one would have expected, the cold-water tap dripped constantly and the toilet seat moved when sat on. In addition, the grassed area at the rear needed cutting so as to make it usable. The owners mowed the grass on their own private pitch and put course to the front of their house so it would have been nice to have had the small area of grass behind the cottage mowed. In conclusion, this is the first time in 50 years of holidaying that we have been asked to strip the bed before we left!! What on earth do they do between the departing guests leaving at 10am and the arriving guests turning up at 3pm. Judging by the number of cobwebs everywhere, not that much. We will not be returning.

  • "When we booked way back during 2017, we booked both the East and the West Barns at the same time!"

One was for the EAST Barn which we took at Xmas Time when we had a very enjoyable experience - nothing to do with it being Xmas time, see our review which is currently posted on your website and couldn't really have been bettered. The second booked - WEST, is the one we used during the week just ended during June and although one might say that they are broadly similar, being adjoined, but nothing could have been further from the truth. I shall endeavour to explain the differences which was to cause us a fair few difficulties during the week and proved to be a serious disappointment. *That said - all things other than for what is contained in the following explanation - were on a par with our previous experience during our stay at Xmas in the EAST Barn, so would definitely give 10 out of 10 for the rest. Major differences:Bedroom - pretty much the same in layout (Minus the Bathroom) but the Bed was smaller and much less comfortable PLUS - there was an overlong "step down" from the bedroom to the corridor leading to the living room area. The Bathroom isn't En Suite and doesn't have any extractor Fan and one has to fiddle about in the dark looking for the lightswitch before entering - and this is emmediately after stepping down from the bedroom. *We preferred not to leave the light on all night - this shouldn't have been required anyway. Being rather long in the tooth, having dodgy knees and being a tad unsteady on my feet, plus Diabetic to boot, my numerous trips during every night resulted in numerous trips and falls during the course of the week. On return journey from the Bathroom, even though the "step up" is indeed rather high compared to the norm, I appreciate that much younger and fitter people might comment on this but manage it as fit people would - and get on with things. I only mention this as a precaution - would recommend that you could perhaps use this as a caution to aid the unwary when booking. We would definitely consider a return to this venue - but NEVER ever book the WEST again, it would always be the EAST should we ever return. The East living area is much more open and spacious and has a Larger Dining Table. To summarise - The Venue and the hosts were as excellant as on our previous visit, cannot be faulted. The WEST Barn leaves a little to be desired and proved a disappointment. The EAST Barn - see my previous posting after our stay at Xmas 2017 - Brilliant!!! Sorry this review couldn't have been positive for our stay this time around. Best wishes Alan & Sue K

Just 4 miles from the picturesque Yorkshire coastline, it is also on the edge of the dramatic North Yorkshire moors country, littered with attractive villages and scenery, which is very popular with walkers and cyclists. Though quiet, Sleights boasts a pub, a fish and chip shop, an antique shop, a butcher's, a bakery, a hairdressers, a Post Office within a Spar shop. The North Yorkshire Steam Railway terminus is a few minutes’ drive with steam trains coming through Sleights, together with regular public transport to and from the nearby port of Whitby. Whitby lies at the mouth of the River Esk and is ideally situated for exploring this beautiful part of Yorkshire. It is an atmospheric town of winding streets and hidden alleys, with a picturesque harbour, safe sandy beaches and, of course, the abbey, reached by the famous 199 steps.
