It is in a beautiful area and not far from Rosedale. There are steps on the path leading to the cottage. The cottage is lovely and there was everything we needed and the garden was very safe for our dog. We booked our grocery shopping on line so we didn't need to travel to a supermarket.

Thank you for your fabulous review and what a great tip for future guests… online grocery shopping for those that don’t want to venture far. I hope we can welcome you back. Property Owner

  • "Well equipped cottage in great rural location with plenty of walks from the doorstep and well placed for visiting local attractions."

Good food available in local dog friendly pub. Neighbours very friendly and helpful . The lack of a mobile signal was a bonus . On this visit there was a problem with the wifi and smart tv, which once aware the owner responded very quickly to try and resolve. Would not hesitate to return . Important that anyone with mobility issues is aware of fact that cottage is accessed from lane by a flight of steps and that the stairs within cottage, as is usual, are quite steep . Overall a real gem.

Dear Jo, Thank you so much for your feedback which is appreciated and so important to us. I will contact Sykes Cottages to ensure your comments about the steps/stairs are clearly highlighted in the information guide. I do hope we can welcome you back in the future. • "Loved our break."

The only negative was that we were told in welcome letter that tea, coffee, milk and sugar would be in cottage so we didn't take any with us. When we arrived late afternoon there was no tea and only 4 coffee bags. The cottage is very remote and we were too late to use local shop so had to make do with 4 cups of coffee until next day. Otherwise we really enjoyed our stay in a beautiful setting.

I can only apologise for this slip in our normally high standard of welcome pack. We pride ourselves on providing Yorkshire tea and coffee along with local produce to welcome you to your home from home. Please visit us again so we can assure you of our standard of service. A very comfortable cottage , well equipped with quality appliances, cosy bedrooms, an excellent shower. A lovely garden to sit and listen to the birdsong. Can't fault it, but the addition of a freezer would be good. Don't forget anything because it's a long windy road to the shops, but there are good dog friendly places to eat nearby. Will come again!

The cottage was of a very high standard, very clean and cosy The dogs loved the garden. We walked into Rosedale Abbey a couple of times but our main outings were to Saltburn-by-the Sea, Whitby and the Ryedale Folk Museum. The cottage was remote but close to the main roads to all areas of the North York Moors and East Coast. We would have liked to do more local walks but it was too misty this time. Parking wasn't an issue in November.

Thank you for your kind comments it is greatly appreciated and also helpful to future guests. There are certainly plenty of walks from the doorstep of various lengths. We hope to welcome you back. Property Owner

The only thing to be aware of is the lane to & from the cottage is only one car width with the odd pull ins . But to be honest lots of the roads around the area was the same . Don’t let it put you off it’ cos your in the countryside ! I would recommend it 100% I wish I could run away more often .

Neighbours very close and very helpful. Front garden quite overgrown due to a gardener problem, neighbours helped by cutting the lawn. Also, blackout blinds in upstairs rooms all need attention or replacing. I changed the battery in the kitchen clock and replaced the bulb in the main bedroom. None of the above spoilt our stay in any way, just comments to note. Fantastic location for getting around or staying within the Rosedale area.

  • "The "roadside parking" was a real issue."

We were only given some clarity on this by email on 29th September, 3 days before we were due to leave for our holiday. This email spoke of off road parking at the bottom of the steps to the row of cottages. When we arrived we found the off road parking was occupied by a deep fenced-off excavation, seemingly work in progress by the water company, and a large heap of hard core, presumably left by the water company to back fill the excavation when work is completed. All of which made it extremely difficult to park with any sense of security. This situation soured our holiday and I believe Sykes/owner should have informed us of the full facts about the condition of the off road parking, allowing us time to change the date of our visit or Sykes/owner to make alternative arrangements for parking, in what is a very tight location under normal circumstance. Also I don't understand why there is no thought given to mentioning, that due to the steps that have to be used to exit and access the cottage on each occasion, that these steps might be difficult the older person or anyone with a walking difficulty. It sounds as if we have nothing good to say about Ghyll Cottage, which is not correct. The cottage was comfortable and with great views, but this experience leads us to think twice about ever using Sykes in future.

Well equipped with everything you need. Great location for walks, trips to the coast and the steam railway. No Wi-fi meant that we planned walks and activities ahead of our holiday although there is plenty of local information in the cottage. Clear directions from the owner so easy to find. Really enjoyed the lack of Wi-fi as it meant that we did things together as a family, watched tv, played the provided board games, talked, ha ha! Secure garden for a small terrier size dog. Thoroughly recommend.

Village and shops within a couple of miles. Great to be able to walk from the front door. Lack of internet and any phone signal was challenging. Friendly helpful caretaker. Very friendly area too. Rosedale Abbey is lovely and the food at 'Graze on the Green' is sublime (even for veggies!). Wonderful base for exploring. A couple of minor things: It would be useful to have a lamp in the sitting/tv area as the wall lights are quite dim, although the 'reading corner' in the dining area, with the armchair and floor standing reading lamp was really welcome. Also, as the weather was very changeable (hot for several days then suddenly cool) storage heaters aren't flexible enough as they need to be switched on the day before, so an effective plug-in heater for downstairs would be good for these situations when it doesnt warrant an open fire. In general, loved the house and would definitely book again.

About the location

ROSEDALE ABBEY

Kirkbymoorside 8 miles; Pickering 10 miles; Whitby 16 miles.

Situated in the heart of the North York Moors National Park and handily placed for touring both the Moors and the Coast, the picturesque village of Rosedale Abbey is set within Rosedale, a beautiful valley of sweeping hillsides and breath-taking views. Rosedale is surrounded by wonderful moorland countryside with footpaths and bridleways radiating out in every direction. Today, a stone pillar, staircase and sundial are all that is left of the 12th century Cistercian Priory that gave the village its unusual name. Charming stone-built cottages cluster around the village green alongside village shops, tearooms, two old coaching inns and a glass studio; which featured recently in an episode of the BBC’s “Countryfile” programme. Rosedale Abbey also has its own 9-hole golf course but for golf enthusiasts, there are a number of excellent courses in the vicinity. The bustling market towns of Kirkbymoorside, Pickering and Helmsley offer a good selection of amenities, including restaurants, independent shops and markets, whilst the abbeys at Rievaulx and Byland are well worth a visit. An easy drive takes you to Castle Howard and the historic city of York whilst the coastal resorts of Whitby, Robin Hoods Bay and Scarborough are all within reach. Guests can take a step back in time by booking a trip on the North York Moors Steam Railway at nearby Pickering, as well as learn of the area’s rich and exciting history at the Ryedale Folk Museum, which holds workshops throughout the year. Embrace the outdoors at Go Ape in Dalby forest for a truly memorable and adventurous family fun day out, or lose yourself in The Great Yorkshire Maze.
