Mariners' Rest

We spent a lovely week here.

We enjoyed the Steam trains going past the garden 3-4 times every day. Nice view of the harbour and mariner with boats. On the upper floor balcony it’s nice to sit out and enjoy the view . You can see. Whitby abbey , church and the building in progress of the gin distillery at the top of the 199 steps. It only takes 5-15 minutes walk to the centre of Whitby and the beaches. The beaches are nice sandy beaches with a few rock pools. We will return next year.

Mariners Rest is ideally located to explore Whitby and its surrounding area.

It is well presented with easy off road parking for 2 large cars and the welcome pack is a very thoughtful touch.

A perfect holiday home with everything that we needed.

The location was ideal as everything was within walking distance and parking was directly outside the holiday home. Once again a perfect holiday home booked through Sykes.

Mariners Rest is lovely 4 bed semi in a quiet area a level walk from the town centre - perfect for folk who love the trains as it’s by the tracks and you see the steam trains in close up.

They only run a few times a day and do not disturb at all. The house has everything you need for a comfortable stay. It would benefit from a small calendar to show which bin should be placed outside which day of the week (it’s Tuesday). The blackout blinds in the top bedroom are a boon - but the centre top one is faulty and does open or close properly. The kitchen knives could do with sharpening, or provide a sharpener.

We love staying at Mariners Rest,this is the third time we have stayed and we loved it just as much the third visit as we did the first.

There is everything close by,only 5/10 minutes walk to all shops/restaurants/bars and the beach. Situated at the side of the train track,giving good views to all of Whitby. We hope to be back again next year too.

We had a wonderful family weekend at the property.

It has beautiful views and the trains going past were a huge positive for us, it was great to see the steam trains so close. Its location and proximity to all the amenities and attractions Whitby offers was fantastic. Beds were comfy, showers were great, kitchen was very well equipped! It had been cleaned throughout to a high standard, which I appreciate is not easy when you’re pet friendly. Only things that could have been improved, tired ceiling lampshades in bedroom, rug in living room, some kitchen utensils. I’m being picky here, none of that affected our stay, which was great! Been to this property 4 or 5 times, location is brilliant, the property is top class, plenty of parking which is a big plus in Whitby.

Stayed in a few different properties in Whitby but this is the best by far. Wouldn't stay anywhere else.

Fabulous property in a great location with an easy level walk into the town centre.

Nicely furnished and it had everything we needed. The only downside was we found the beds uncomfortable, we are in our 60s/70s though. Our friends didn’t sleep well though on the middle floor as the boatyard across the way has very bright security lights and there weren’t blackout curtains in their bedroom. Also the was no information pack explaining what to do with regards to waste, leaving, other useful info etc. We all had a great time though. Having 3 car parking spaces was fantastic.

Hi, we had a lovely visit and had excellent communication with the host.

Only points worth mentioning was there were no instructions for operation of the fire (it got a bit chilly in evening due to time of year) or the waste recycling, and the pressure was very low in the two bedroom's shower (though temperature was great).

We had a wonderful stay at the cottage.

Very easy to find and a great location! Fab views from the back of the property, right next to the Train line, which you don’t even notice, trains passing are very few and never at night. Property has everything and comfortable. I would recommend to stay here, we would return.

Good access to the town, and station.

The only consideration may be to have a washer-dryer rather than just washing machine.

However with the under floor heating and towel radiators drying was not a big deal. Lovely to meet the ladies as we left. We shall likely book again (I have looked but not available for the date we had in mind).

The house was very clean and well presented.

It's ideally situated for easy access into town. Outside patio was secure enough for our large dog . Lovely welcome pack too, thank you. Note .... we arrived after a very cold spell and heavy snow and house had been empty , it took a day or 2 to warm through , especiallythe top floor bedroom ..... .. so maybe the the heating could of been left on for our arrival....... just for future reference in cold weather ..... didn't spoil or stay at all. We have booked this again for next November .

We always enjoy watching the trains passing by. The property was as welcoming and well-equipped as ever. This was our first time visiting with a baby, and we appreciated the travel cot and highchair being set up and ready for us. Thank you for another lovely stay!

Beautifully presented and with many welcoming touches - flowers, bread, milk, tea, etc, etc.

We don't have even a tiny complaint - it was all spot on.

This was our 2nd time staying here-4 adults and 2 children and we all loved it again.

The holiday home is spacious, clean,comfortable and welcoming and the owner suppled all the basics-tea,coffee, sugar etc and we appreciated the bread, milk,cheese and the flowers were beautiful.The parking for 2 cars is always a bonus. It's about a 15 min walk to the centre so it's in a very convenient postion. What was good to see is that the owners really care about their visitors comfort (not always the case!) as there was new outdoor furniture and the home had been redecorated including new lounge seating since our last visit- so well done and thank you.

Perfect accommodation for families, walking distance to everything Whitby has to offer and close enough by car to the various beauty spots in the surrounding area.

We enjoyed our stay.

The house was in a great location. We walked into Whitby town centre after dinner most nights.The beds were comfortable and there was plenty of hot water. There was enough room for two large cars on the driveway. I would recommend the house.

Lovely holiday, house had everything we needed and is in good location (various walks from the front door).

The parking for 2 cars was great and we enjoyed watching the trains. Welcome food, wine and flowers were much appreciated. The sunshine meant we made good use of the outdoor space.

The sofas and beds were very comfortable . The rooms light and airy The trains although close to property were not an issue . The property had many good points. It was located at the bottom of a steep hill . It was then on the flat and not too far to walk to the Center of the town. A few issues with the property. The kitchen could do with a deep clean . Plus an extra toilet roll in bathroom and toilet. The balcony could also do with some maintenance. If these issues addressed I would say it’s perfect.

We stayed at Mariners Rest for the 2nd time and we loved it just as much as we did the first time, if not more.

The vendor of the property is an absolute delight to speak with and made sure our stay ran smoothly from start to finish. Lovely bottle of wine and bunch of flowers to great us on our arrival, just 1 of the beautiful little touches added to ensure you have the most pleasant stay. Our little team will be back to stay at Mariners Rest again aslong as it stays available for holiday makers to stay.

A beautiful cottage, extremely well maintained and very clean on arrival.

Well positioned for walking into Whitby, the few trains a day didn’t cause an issue and it was good to see the old trains from the North York Moors Railway.

The cottage was the perfect location for exploring Whitby and the Yorkshire coast.

It was very quiet even with the odd train going by. The house was comfortable and had pretty much everything needed for a relaxing stay. When we arrived it was clean, and the flowers, fresh bread and milk were a lovely touch. The property is light, warm and spacious, ideal for 3 people to have their own room. The little patio was delightful (with a useful washing line) and we enjoyed late afternoon drinks in the sun. We appreciated there being plenty of hooks for coats and backpacks, and a shoe rack, often holiday properties don’t have anywhere to put wet coats or boots (although the weather was great so no wet clothes!). Parking for two cars was also a real bonus in Whitby. All in all a great find….

Have stayed here many times with family.

The house is cosy but with plenty of room for all 8 of us. We can watch the trains go by, sometimes steam trains. The walk into Whitby is lined with boats in the harbour so there’s plenty to see. Kitchen is fully equipped with lots of spare cupboard space and plenty of surfaces. We love staying here Thank you

The property was clean, comfortable, well equipped and in a good location.

I wouldn’t describe the property as luxurious but it was easy to live in and we had a very pleasant stay. The small issues we had, a full dustbin and changing the timing on the central heating, were dealt with pleasantly and promptly.

The cottage is well positioned for the town plus the steam engine passed by twice a day which a bonus. Parking for two cars was very useful.

What a wonderful holiday home!

Great location and well appointed. The kitchen had everything we needed and the outdoor space was ideal for our little dog and the odd cup of coffee in the morning sunshine. The balcony on the master bedroom was super and a real treat to have a view of the abbey. The master bedroom would benefit from a big set of drawers and a dressing table, there is plenty of room for them. Surface space is lacking. Wonderfully quiet at night time and ample space to park two big cars off the road. The walk into Whitby is super easy and on the flat, it takes less than 5 mins! Will 100% be back as we have visited Whitby many times and really enjoyed being so close to everything.

Beautiful spacious property, very clean which provides all the usual holiday cottage facilities and more!

It’s well positioned, about a 10 min stroll uphill on way back from town (on the station side of the bridge). Plus has x2 parking bays which is a real bonus. Had a lovely stay, although we all did get disturbed most nights by what sounded like a freight train going by in the early hours which always blew the whistle right outside the property and also be aware that in the daytime you get diesel fumes if windows/doors left open as the train stops for a few minutes right outside the back of the property. Also if the shower/bath on middle floor is being used you can’t use the loft room shower at the same time as it’s either scalding hot/freezing cold (someone else has previously mentioned this). A nice touch by the owner and much appreciated was the milk, etc left as we could have a nice cup of tea on arrival also she did let us in to the property a little early which was welcomed after a long 6 hour drive on a baking hot day! We recommend a trip to Robin Hood’s Bay (can catch local bus for £2). Also would highly recommend Bothams’ Tea Rooms in town, it has fantastic food and cakes and Tiffins opposite does a great English breakfast.

We absolutely loved our stay at Mariners Rest,from the minute we stepped into the house we loved it.

With a welcome bottle of wine,beautiful uncut bread and pretty flowers we were made to feel very special instantly. The position of the house is perfect with views of the whole of Whitby from each floor. We really did not want to leave on our last day and we will be back again hopefully

Beds are very lumpy for the money we paid.

Thought about booking again but price has almost doubled for the same time next year

Absolutely loved the property, location was amazing, certainly suitable for 6 adults, but the deal clincher was the 2 car parking spaces as Whitby was really busy and we didn’t need to use our vehicles.

The cot for grandbaby TJ was superb and the other grandchildren loved their rooms. Outside space super,especially to watch the steam train chuffing past. The view of the harbour a delight. We would definitely stay again in a heartbeat. Thanks for a lovely stay.

What a lovely holiday home.

It's exactly the same as the photos and was clean and comfortable with plenty of room for our family of 4 adults and 2 children-5&4 with practically everything needed for a self catering holiday even a welcome pack of bread cheese wine and milk There's a small outside seating area with the bonus of a clothes drier- a big help with 2 children! and we loved seeing the trains go by and the two parking places were a big bonus. It is only a 10 min walk to the centre with the short cut. We all had a fun packed holiday-train, bus and boat rides. For those with children there's a nice play area straight up the hill on the left and Pannet park a little further. Whitby Abbey is worth a visit and call into the Brewery for a drink and delicious pizzas. We also had an Italian meal at Moutreys which was excellent. The Waiting Room and the Arch and Abbey were our favourite places for a drink. I would certainly stay here again. Great holiday!

Lovely property in a great location for easy access to the town.

Comfy beds, warm underfloor heating and a fully stocked kitchen. What more do you need? The welcome pack is also a nice touch and was much appreciated following a snowy drive up from the Peak District.

Every thing was lovely, 6 people in all (3 couples) enjoyed it that much we've booked again for next year.

The house is great in every respect: position, comfort, cleanliness.

.. Only two things missing that we could think of - a wok, because cooking for 8 is hard with two small frying pans, and a sunshade, because it gets very hot in the back garden and it's nice to eat out if possible.

Mrs Johnson was the perfect owner.

She was extremely helpful and friendly . The cottage was ideally placed for a short walk into town and a bonus to have parking on the flat . The decor , furnishings and all the equipment were first class and the second floor master bedroom was superb with a fantastic view of the trains and the boats. We have had it cancelled twice due to covid ,but it was definitely worth the wait.

Lovely property, great location

This is a great property - it’s in a great location, 5 minutes walk into Whitby so you don’t need to find somewhere to park.

The property has enough room for two cars to park off the road which is very helpful. The house has a lovely nautical theme going on in terms of decoration and it is beautifully done. The kitchen has plenty of utensils and storage and having a washing machine is ideal (a washer/dryer would be even better). In a perfect world there would be more green space outside but the back yard area is okay for sitting out in and watching the trains go by (especially the steam trains which were cause for much excitement!). We would definitely go back.

The only thing which we all thought could be improved is leaving another set of keys for the house as only one set was left.

and with two families staying at the property one or two family members had to stay up waiting for the other family. Otherwise we had a fantastic holiday and would highly recommend ‘Mariners Rest ‘ to everyone. Just a ten minute walk into the centre of Whitby. I must stress that parking infront of the house was a huge bonus and greatly appreciated.

Enjoyed watching steam trains going by ,excellent views from roof top terrace . Parking outside the accommodation a real boon ,Penny Hedge pub was a good find and only 5 minutes away by car.

Within a easy walk into Whitby. Seeing the steam engine pass from the house was amazing too. Home comforts, including sofas and beds! Even a washing machine and washing line! Ideal if you have children. Loved every minute of our stay in Mariners Rest. Thank you.

The accommodation was very clean and well equipped.

The setting was great with views of the boats and the Abbey. We particularly liked the top floor bedroom which was very light and airy.

Close to Whitby and all amenities. What particularly impressed us was how the owner and Sykes went the extra mile to accommodate a very last minute booking.

Such a wonderful holiday cottage, really comfortable and stylish and practicality of off street parking.

We felt assured everything was safe and clean, the simple introduction of a box for all your used towels and linen was a great idea. We enjoyed waving to the steam train a couple of afternoons as it left Whitby station. We had a couple of walks into Whitby and visited the surrounding area beaches and woodland walks. We’d love to come back here.

Short walk to the centre and a few trains a day were exciting for the kids. Very clean and comfortable, plenty of space for everyone. Would definitely book again to stay at Mariners Rest.

Mariners rest is a lovely house in a close quite area at the back of the harbour , it overlooks all the boats and the steam train travels right next to the house stopping for a couple of minutes, giving enough time for our grandchildren to wave to people on the train .

This is our second visit to this house and we shall return .

Mariner's Rest is a lovely and comfortable home. Thank you very much for the welcome gifts. There's lots to do in Whitby and the surrounding areas. We're looking forward to returning another year.

The house is ideally situated being only a good 5 minute walk away from the town centre and in a very quiet and peaceful position.We found that equipment wise we wanted for nothing.It really is a home from home and the owners have thought of everything!The welcome pack of bread,cheese,wine ,milk and flowers was extremely thoughtful and very much appreciated. My husband and I stayed in the loft bedroom which was very comfortable and afforded great views of the town and abbey from the balcony.The en-suite was nicely fitted out and looked as though it has been recently done. My mum in law stayed in one of the ample sized bedrooms on the floor below and had the good family sized bathroom to herself. We felt the house layout for us was ideal giving us all our own space! We found the property to be plenty warm enough and was pleased to find we had ample hot water at all times. The only slight downside and it is only a slight one is that I would say the kitchen is a little tired.But really this isn’t that important in the grand scale of things as there is much more to this house. Eating out in Whitby we would highly recommend humble pie and mash and fish and chips from trenchers.We visited the Bulls head in Ugthorpe for a Sunday carvery which was gorgeous and very good value at £10.80.That afternoon ended up at the Endevour pub which on a weekend has live entertainment.Would highly recommended this place. All in all had a fantastic holiday and enjoyed every aspect of Whitby.

Would highly recommend this property and will definitely be returning in the future. And the staff at Sykes are helpful, friendly and make the holiday booking experience so much nicer.

A perfect home from home.

Central and good for exploring the area. Very well appointed and lovely and warm. Very good welcome pack. We would love to return.

Having visited Whitby as a family holiday destination many times previously, we decided to visit again as six of us (three couples) for a winter holiday.

When we arrived at the cottage it was absolutely beautifully decorated throughout, and there was more than enough space for us all. A very good sized kitchen with everything we needed, as well as a little welcome pack which was lovely - wine, cheese, milk - everything we needed to make us feel welcome at Mariner's Rest. The master bedroom is gorgeous, with an amazing balcony overlooking the harbour and with gorgeous views over the town. The other bedrooms are great sizes - one double, one with two singles and another single bedroom. The living room is also a great size, enough seating for six people around the electric fire for cosy nights in front of the television. There's a good sized dining table - so good we managed to eat a whole Christmas dinner with all the trimmings around it as we won't all be spending Christmas together this year. Outside is a great area too, again overlooking the boats in the harbour. Admittedly we didn't spend too much time there as it was very cold - but in the summer it would be a perfect area for alfresco dining. To the front of the house there is two car parking spaces - something we have struggled with in the majority of other holiday cottages we have stayed in. Most of Whitby is on road parking and it can be hit and miss if you don't get there at the right time - so having these two spaces at the front of the house was very convenient for us. The house itself provided everything, possibly more than we could have asked for in a holiday home. It is a shame that the experience was somewhat scuppered on the last night of our holiday. Obviously the last night of anyones holiday is a busy one - especially when the check out time is quite early in comparison to other cottages we have stayed in (10am). With six adults packing a weeks worth of things, as well as trying to cook dinner for six - there was a knock at the door and it was the owner of the property. She turned up at about 7pm to ask if she could come in to the house with the cleaner at 9.30 instead of 10am, which is something a phone call would have been sufficient for, but actually it almost felt like she was looking to see if we had done anything wrong. I can totally understand that an owner of a property might want to meet the people staying in their house, but I would probably recommend doing that at the start of someones holiday rather than the night before they leave at tea time. It made us all feel quite awkward and it definitely put a negative spin on the holiday at the last minute. There was a comment made about my dog too, who was sat on a blanket that we had bought to put on one area of the sofa. In the holiday listing the property was listed as dog friendly, but when you arrive at the cottage there are 'rules' about where your dog can and can't go. I respect that people may not allow their dogs on the furniture, but as a dog who is used to being allowed everywhere in a house we bought a blanket so there was no contact with the furniture. I didn't appreciate the owner telling my dog off, especially when the rules aren't mentioned in the advertisement for the house. There were a few negative comments made about other guests who had stayed previously, which almost made us feel like she would be saying negative things about us to the next guests. Overall, it's a shame but we wouldn't stay in the house again as we were made to feel so uncomfortable on the last night of our holiday.

Once again a lovely holiday, we hope to return next year to this property

As ever wonderful cottage, we will be back next year

House as described, very smart and cosy.

Loved the steam trains going past and it was a short walk to the mariner. The flowers and food and wine was a lovely surprise. Lots of thought put into how the house looked. Would have liked a couple of tea towels and as extra sack for the rubbish.
