  • "I'd thoroughly recommend the Signal Box as a great place to stay; wonderful views; loved the trains passing by (and we're not rail buffs!"

). Signal Box is well laid out, scrupulously clean, a good base for surrounding walks/train trips. More than that, it feels as though it's cared for - this might be because Isla and her husband stay themselves occasionally - something I'd recommend to every owner - so there's nothing "missing"! One slight issue - the wonderful chocolate fudge cake provided for our arrival was way too big for two (but we finished it anyway)!

  • "Fantastically Funky Place to stay."

We stayed at the Signal Box in June 2022. Great communication with the owners, who were super helpful suggesting places to visit and local things to see. The Signal Box has views across fields, watching the sheep, birds and cattle was quite mesmerising! On arrival we found chocolate fudge cake, yum! milk and flowers, thank you so much for these - very much appreciated. Well appointed kitchen, lovely living area with aforementioned views, parking, what's not to like? Didn't sample the sauna, far too many other things to do! Thanks Phil and Adele

  • "We had a lovely relaxing time."

There are a couple of small things: there were not enough hangers in the wardrobe for our liking and I would have preferred a larger surface to act as a dressing table. The kitchen is very well appointed but we missed a drainer by the sink. That said we felt the standard of equipment was excellent.

I’ve wanted to stay in it for a long time, and it was just lovely. Beautifully clean and comfortable, very well equipped with good quality appliances and cooking utensils. Also lots of extras, like the sauna, the railway books and the fantastic chocolate cake (made gluten free especially for me). The highlight of course was the proximity to the railway - got lots of great photos and videos. Thank you so much Isla!

Not only is this a unique property but it is furnished to the highest standards and equipped wonderfully - and the delighter is the sauna without a doubt. Whatever you come to the Cairngorms for the location is perfect with plenty of walking right from the front door and so much to do and see. If you just want to relax then the ability to curl up in front of the log burner and take in the view and unwind letting your day be governed by the train timetable then there is nowhere better. I will be back.

  • "Signal Box is a magic place to stay, Isla left us milk, daffodils and a home made chocolate cake which was delicious."

Unfortunately we had to head for home early due to Covid 19 warnings for our age group and shops having to close for lack of sanitisers and staff safety. We will hopefully rebook when life returns to some semblance of normality as we only scratched the surface of the amenities and visitor attractions in the area.

The views from the upstairs living area are exceptional. The trains are a continuous source of interest and the wildlife viewing is great. The property is so well built and insulated the heating was not required, just the wood burner. The owners have thought of everything down to flowers and the most delicious chocolate cake on arrival. The best holiday rental we have ever experienced.

We loved the cosy lounge with the log burner and the amazing views from the many windows. The property was very well equipped and had a lovely shower room. It felt a bit special staying here and we would definitely return. It does take a wee while to get used to the trains thundering past but this just adds to the experience!

  • "The Signal Box was a beautifully looked after, warm and welcoming home from home for our exploring of the Scottish Highlands."

Incredibly clean, well presented, quirky and equipped for everything! On arrival was a (slightly addictive...) chocolate cake, milk and everything there to get the wood burner going... and the view!!!! My god, the view.... We watched the sun creep over the mountains every day in awe of the scenery. In recommendation we tried the Glen Hotel for food which was okay, but after reading the reviews we expected better food/service and were a bit disappointed. The Braeriach Hotel on the high street on the other hand was a riot!! If you want to be welcomed into the community with open arms and enjoy great company and a few drinks whilst listening to the regulars blast out Sinatra on the karaoke (Friday night) this is the place for you! One of the best nights out for a long time ending in hugs and "come back to see us again." Truly felt welcomed and left with a warm fuzzy glow.... (could also account that to the whisky....) If you want to laugh continuously for a few hours, pay them a visit. The Scottish highlands has so much to see and do and the Signal Box is central to it all. Our first visit and I doubt it will be our last. Thank you Isla for a wonderful stay.

  • "My husband and I really enjoyed our stay at this great property, our stay was fantastic!"

The signal box had everything we needed, it was well stocked and so lovely a place. We were treated to a lovely homemade chocolate cake on arrival and milk in the fridge, which hubby loved as I'm vegan so he enjoyed the lot over the week we stayed! It was so peaceful a stay, there are plenty of books to read on all sorts of subjects if you get bored at all, I only managed one but fancied reading a lot more! There is a train that passes every now and then but it didn't disturb us, we just got very into watching for the different trains. Its in a great location also, close to many different walks and nearby towns and places of interest, we also really appreciated the sauna after some Munro climbing! It is also pretty close, about 10-15 minute walk away from a few shops, restaurants and pubs of which I found a few were vegan friendly luckily as I was thinking I would be cooking all own food which there definitely is the facilities to do this.We really hope to visit again in the future!

It had it all from a great location looking over to the Cairngorms, next door to a little single track railway station, within a short drive or walk to numerous beauty spots and the option to take the train to Inverness,Perth, nearby Aviemore and countless other stations for hiking or just relaxing walks. The 'upside down' Signal Box enabled great views from the upstairs living room and kitchen. We did'nt have to start looking for a supermarket as soon as we arrived as Isla had all we needed, ie tea bags, coffee, sugar, cleaning materials etc. and even milk and a lovely chocolate cake. This is the first time that I have given 10 out of 10 to all questions in a review and it is well deserved.

  • "The Signal Box is in a beautiful location and is very stylish and well equipped."

The sauna is a luxurious addition and very relaxing after a long day walking across the hills. We had a lovely chocolate cake, flowers and pint of milk awaiting our arrival which was delightful. Isla, the owner, called round on Tuesday to make sure everything was OK, which was very helpful. There are two things we would like to mention: First, the mattress was very, very firm. It would appear that the mattress, being sprung, is not suitable for a slatted wooden base and should normally be on a divan base, making it more comfortable. The duvet was only just wide enough and felt meagre. A king size duvet on a double mattress is always cosier! Secondly, there was no DVD player despite it being mentioned in the details. It didn't matter that much but perhaps should be removed from the description.

Thank you for your feedback, we are happy to hear you had a nice stay and enjoyed the welcome gift. We are sorry to hear you were unhappy with the duvet cover, this has now been changed to a king-size duvet. In relation to the mattress this is down to personal opinion however, we will monitor the feedback on the mattress. The property now has a smart TV so the DVD player has been removed, the description has now been updated. Thanks again and we hope to welcome you back in the future. Property Owner

Everything has been carefully thought out and looks to have been a labour of love. It is sparklingly clean. It is warm and would be cosy in even the coldest of Decembers with the easily managed wood burning stove . And there's even a sauna ! A joy after a day out. Good location, but in the Cairngorms so a bit remote. Despite being a signal box it was very quiet and we actually enjoyed the trains going past. Wifi was a bit flaky at times, but this was probably more to do with the rural location than anything else.

Isla had taken such care to provide a really high quality accommodation and she followed up during the week and gave us directions to a fantastic family-friendly local mountain climb. Nothing was too much trouble. We really appreciated all the little touches like the M&S hand soap, John Lewis bed linen and towels, extra mattress topper for the sofabed and lovely local room fragrances. Everything we could have possibly needed was there, plus the beds were comfy and the shower was amazing. We adored the location and the property. We are very grateful for the hospitality and finishing touches - the Signal Box is exceptionally clean and tidy and this, together with the layout and decor contributed to make this a memorable holiday. The property

Something a bit special!

This quirky detached wooden property, built in 2004 in the form of a signal box, is adjacent to the station in the Badenoch & Strathspey village of Newtonmore and was featured in The Times' list of '50 best cottages, beach houses and rural retreats' in January 2013.

To make the most of the panoramic views towards the River Spey and Cairngorm Mountains, the accommodation is upside down, with a spacious, open plan living area on the first floor, while on the ground floor are a double bedroom and bathroom with sauna.

Decorated to a high standard, this charming property is in an ideal location to explore the village and take advantage of the walking in the area.

The cottage is 150 metres from a link into the Wildcat Trail - a 7km orbital walk and path network.

The other attractions of the Cairngorms National Park are also within easy reach - an excellent base at any time of year!
