  • "We thoroughly enjoyed our Christmas at Dorothy Forster."

The apartment is tastefully furnished, warm and well equipped, including a Christmas tree! A stone’s throw to pubs and shops and a short drive to the wonderful Northumberland coast AND Santa found us! Thank you.

Couldn’t fault a thing. Seats and beds very comfortable. Very little outside noise even though it’s on the road and there was plenty parking spaces 50 mtrs away. Def recommend it and def go back

  • "My wife and I loved the house, its location and accessibility to old Alnwick."

Our main concern was parking but as it turned out, not a problem as we could always find a spot for the night between the castle entrance and the Bailiffgate museum. The fridge has not been fixed (no freezer, no door handle so had to prise it open with fingers). Other than that everything was OK, even the misfitting doors! Bathroom a bit tight but OK. Beds very comfortable. Overall, very clean. We will certainly return.

  • "Lovely place."

Well appointed. Comfortable, except beds weren't particularly so. Duvets left us slightly cold (heating was off overnight). A double rather than two singles would also be an improvement.

On arriving we experienced 3 days of diy above including hammering, drilling and moving furniture not a good start. After the weekend the noise upstairs wasn’t to bad but definitely not creaky floorboards. *Note the step up to the shower is high and difficult for my husband with mobility problems.

  • "The welcome pack, slippers and milk in the fridge were all nice touches, the level of cleanliness and overall decor was very pleasant."

The advertised picture of the courtyard should be removed, it has nothing to do with the property and appears to be used rather than the less flattering entry to the cottage. The cabinet above the toilet in the very small bathroom was a bump to the head for us both, maybe remove it? The strong smelling scented oils in the bedroom are presumably used to mask the musty damp smell (we understand the property is very old) but can be an issue for asthmatics. The list of chores to carry out prior to leaving seemed a little over the top.

Hello Paul, thanks for your feedback. I hope you enjoyed your stay in Northumberland and got to see some of the beautiful places in the county. I appreciate your comments about the welcome pack, cleanliness and decor, thank you. In relation to the other points you make: I will arrange to get another photo added of the front as you suggest but the advertised photo isn't of the courtyard in particular although it is in the shot, it's of the rear of the property which happens to incorporate a courtyard as there is one there. We think it's is a nice photo showing off the ancient architecture of the building that people will appreciate (and do appreciate as they've told me) The Jo Malone scented oils in the house are not there to mask any smells, they are there because we've had great feedback on them in the past because people think they smell nice. I do realise that maybe they're not everyone's bag, sorry if you found them too strong, I hope you moved them out of the rooms if that was the case. The list of 'chores' you mention is a particularly interesting comment as all we ask guests to do at the end of their stay is put any rubbish out and remove bed sheets and place them in a bag which is standard in the holiday let industry. Anyway, thank you for staying with us. Kind regards, Michael Property Owner

  • "A lovely place to stay."

Really well equipped and beautiful clean. Only one downside was the lack of some space outside. I asked if there would be somewhere to sit outside and was sent a picture which bore very little resemblance! The courtyard is owned by the house behind and although there was a bench it was totally overlooked by the other house. Luckily we had beautiful weather and were out and about for a lot of the time but it would have been good to have somewhere to have a coffee etc.

Hi Stella, thanks for leaving a nice review for us and I'm glad you found the accommodation well equipped and beautifully clean. I'm also delighted you had some great weather. With regards to what you say about the outside space, I'm not sure who sent you a photo, nor whom you asked about any outside space so I can't comment on that, but there is no mention of the property having any space outside anywhere on the details so I'm not too sure what else I can say about that other than apologise for any confusion. Kind regards, Michael Property Owner

  • "Parking was a little awkward."

I had to park where I could on arrival to find the permit indicating where I was allowed to park so that meant a small search. It was difficult unloading and loading having to park on the pavement on double yellow lines that was stressful. Waste disposal/depositing was a bit protracted and would have been worse in bad weather having to walk further than anticipated.

Hi Robert, Thanks so much for your review, I'm delighted you enjoyed your stay. Sorry you found the parking a little awkward, we have recently amended the instructions and information that Sykes send out to people to make this clearer. Our hands are tied with the re-cycling system in Alnwick as wheelie bins are not offered where we are. Kind regards, Michael Property Owner

  • "Absolutely beautiful accommodation."

Really well placed bang opposite the entrance to the castle which is definitely worth a visit - full day for us. We got the train from alnmouth to Edinburgh for one day - really easy 10 mins away and free parking at the station. Recommend the hop on hop off bus and camera obscura. Bamburgh castle is beautiful - right on the beach - but has no tours / guides so not as interesting as alnwick (for me and my 12 year old anyway). There's everything you need for a stay at the accommodation, we cooked most evenings (easy micro / oven meals) and there was everything we needed on hand. Heating and hot water worked fine and it was lovely to have a little pack of shower gel etc (we didn't use it but it was a lovely thought). I did find the bin instructions a bit confusing but that was probably my fault (we just took the rubbish with us to dispose of). Would definitely recommend and would stay again.

Thank you for going to the trouble of writing such a nice review, it's much appreciated. We're so pleased you enjoyed your stay. We will certainly look at improving the bin instructions to make them clearer. Kind regards, Michael. Property Owner

  • "Excellent modern well equipped property for 2 people, all on the ground floor."

We really appreciated all the little extras that were left, such as slippers, milk, tea bags, biscuits, kitchen roll and toiletries. This property is just a couple of minutes from shops, cafes and restaurants, literally round the corner from Alnwick Castle and Garden but quiet, especially as the bedroom is at the back away from any road noise. We never had any problem parking just a minute away on Bailffgate on the cobbled parking spaces with the parking permit which was provided. We would definitely book this property again.

About the location

ALNWICK

Alnmouth 4 miles; Bamburgh 15 miles; Rothbury 10 miles.

The attractive and historic market town of Alnwick is dominated by Alnwick Castle, home to the Duke of Northumberland. The Castle Gardens, opened in 2002, are home to Europe's largest cascading water feature, a fabulous (and enormous) treehouse, a delightful rose garden and a beautiful, walled ornamental garden, which will delight novice and experienced gardeners alike. The castle is also famous as the setting for Hogwarts School featured in the Harry Potter films! The town's narrow streets have seen little change since the days when the London to Edinburgh stage coach passed through and the Market Place, with its stone cross, is still the central feature and the ideal venue for the weekly Saturday market. Alnwick offers a good selection of shops, pubs and places to eat and there is plenty to see and do, with miles of golden sandy beaches, numerous castles and boat trips to the famous Farne Islands all available nearby. Altogether a superb location for exploring Northumberland and its stunning Heritage Coastline.
