"A comfortable, well equipped cottage, situated in a small village, literally five minutes from a lovely beach."
Our stay was at the end of a long holiday season, therefore the cottage was in need of a deep clean and maintenance check. eg. the shower showed signs of mould. Fan not working.
This did not stop us enjoying our stay---we would go back again.

It was clean, warm, comfortable and cosy. Felt like a home from home, with everything you required. Especially enjoyed sitting out in the conservatory late afternoons. The location is great and I enjoyed lovely walks on the beach both ways.

"We were disturbed to discover during our stay that items of bed linen soiled by previous guests had not been removed during changeover preparation."
This was swiftly dealt with by a member of Northumberland Coast and Country Cottages housekeeping team, but clearly should never have happened.
The cottage requires regular, thorough cleaning inside and out to remove the accumulation of dust, sand and dog hairs on all surfaces, including upholstery. The oven and its contents also need a deep clean and the overgrown garden would be much more appealing if kept tidy.
Canny Cottage is unusual in not providing very basic items such as washing-up liquid, sufficient toilet paper and cleaning materials. A vacuum cleaner is essential in such an environment; a dustpan and brush is no substitute.
A bowl for the sink is required in the absence of a dishwasher.
Many of these comments have been made by previous guests. We enjoyed our stay in the cottage but feel that future guest’s experience would be enhanced by closer attention to detail.

"Last year we had a lovely time at Canny Cottage despite the extensive building works on a neighbouring cottage that were about to finish."
So, having had no warning of any further works in any shape or form, we were looking forward to having a quiet and peaceful holiday. Unfortunately this was not the case. Putting the problem there now appears to be with access to the property due to parked vehicles aside, within a few days of arriving fencing work began in the small garden directly next door to the cottage. This was followed by erection of scaffolding, skip delivery and roofing works on the owners’ cottage. No information on the timetable for any of these works was provided despite calls to Northumbria Cottages and the situation was noisy and extremely stressful. So much so that we spent more time than we would normally want to away from the cottage and even considered cutting the holiday short.
We love the area but having stayed in the cottage last year and found it to be pretty much perfect, we felt that this time it could do with a deep clean and more attention may need to be given to its maintenance. The lack of a vacuum cleaner, as has been already said, is a problem.
Needless to say that we will not be returning, which we are sad about.

"Canny Cottage is compact but adequate for 2 adults on a short stay."
The beach is indeed a 1 minute walk away and local facilities are nearby (Morrisons supermarket 5 minute drive with 50kW Electric Vehicle charging) charging was out of order for us and next nearest is 35 minutes away so a charge point would be a good idea at the cottage itself. People with limited mobility will not cope easily, the steps inside cottage are OK but my mobility scooter wasn't usable because of uneven and unsuitable surfaces in the whole village area. Listing needs addressing as it lists a dishwasher which isn't there.

"The location of this cottage is very hard to beat."
The property was spotless and the sofa and armchair were very comfortable. The property is well lit.
The shower does not drain properly so it is very difficult to get sand to stop building up on the shower tray. It must be a pain for your cleaner to deal with. If you had a shower head that was not fixed it would be a bit easier to clean the shower tray after washing sand off feet.
The cleaning pack contains items that are superfluous but does not contain enough washing liquid. It contains 3 dishwasher tablets, in spite of there being no dishwasher, and 2 bin liners, when only one is needed. The bottle of washing up liquid is tiny. It is also more wasteful, to be purchasing lots of little bottles instead of putting one large bottle of liquid out and changing it, when it runs out. It is also wasteful to give people dish washer tablets that will just end up in the bin.
The welcome pack is pretty mean, compared to most other holiday lets. All of the other places we have rented, over the years (more than 15) have had enough teabags, coffee and sugar for more than a week and not just 2 days. A pint of uht milk and a sugar bowl with sugar in it would have been more useful than the packets of biscuits that were left for us. Most places provide a pint of milk and a loaf of bread, in addition to tea/coffee/sugar.
It would be helpful if some more pegs could be provided, for drying washing outside.

"We had a wonderful two weeks in Canny Cottage, Low Hauxley."
The cottage was without doubt the best one that we have stayed in. It was well equipped with everything we needed, tastefully decorated and was also comfortable and quiet. We had no problems whatsoever with the shower or the water temperature as mentioned in a very recent review. In fact there was a plentiful supply of on demand hot water.
The conservatory and garden were a real bonus where we could settle down and enjoy the peace, tranquillity and birdlife.
The property is located in a fabulous position a few minutes from the sea and giving easy access to the sights along the coast including Holy Island, Wallington Hall, Howick Hall, Dunstanburgh, Morpeth etc. Great walking country including a nice easy (ish) one to Linhope Spout. On a rather rainy day we were also able to catch a train from Alnmouth into Newcastle to see the exceptional Turner exhibition in the Laing Gallery.
Bistro 23 in Alnmouth is great for a more special evening meal but you should book. It also functions as a tea room during the day but we didn’t experience that. Hauxley Wildlife Discovery Centre is a stones throw from the cottage with a nice cafe. The Artisan Cafe in Newbiggin is fantastic value for yummy bacon sarnies, jacket potatoes and cake. Howick Hall-lovely Earl Grey tea cake. Spurrelis for good coffee and ice cream. The Harbour Fish Bar in Amble does amazing fish and chips……we could go on……
All in all we had such a memorable time in no small part due to how lovely the cottage is. Thank you for a great stay, we hope to return!
As an aside the builders were not a problem at all-we found it easier to reverse park in front on the garage to ease departure if required and thus to avoid the parking van(s). However, we were told by the owners of the cottage being renovated that the builders are scheduled to finish work soon anyway.

"The cottage was ideal for 2."
The location was good and enabled us to visit the areas of Northumberland that were important to us.
The cottage could have been cleaner; there were cobwebs on the bedroom ceiling from day one which had been there a while. Equipment was very basic giving a cheap feel. Main problem was the shower which after seeking a repair Sykes admitted would only last 5 minutes and the next person would have to wait at least 15 minutes before they could shower. The thermostat was stuck on very hot and was inoperable. This info should be included in the advert for this property so that clients can decide whether they want to be dictated to about showering preferences.
We enjoyed the location but the to and froing with Sykes was poor and, as yet, only a refusal of reasonable discount for our trouble.
In all a good location let down by lack of attention to detail.

"Fabulous property great location it was so peaceful and a great base for exploring."
We'd definitely return.
My only small criticism is in a cottage for 3 people there were only 2 dining chairs for the table which meant we couldn't all sit at the table- perhaps a folding chair for occasional use that doesn't take up space?
Thank you for your fantastic review! Also thanks for alerting us to the missing chair- there should be three, we’ll make sure to replace the missing one as soon as possible.

"We stayed at " Canny Cottage" in 2022, this was our second holiday there."
We had difficulty with the TV and could only get " catch-up" telly , despite rebooting the Router, we were limited to BBC i-player , ITV x, etc . We could not raise the EPG on the TV screen and contacted Northumbrian cottages about it who said they were prepared to send someone out to have a look at it, but we did not pursue the matter as the weather was excellent and we spent very little time in the place. They was a builder doing a complete update of the house next door and would be there for another 3 months, but with a bit of manouvering we got the car out of the alloted parking slot. Its a great place to stay, and a perfect base to travel around the area. Hauxley Nature reserve cafe has delicous scones, and its a 10 minute walk away, with lovely views of the lake. The beach is 150 yards away , and best in the evening when it is deserted, with lovely views of Coquet Island. Amble Harbour mouth at high tide had a pod of dolphins rolling around near the pier, and they are plenty of rabbits in the back garden. Warkworth is walking distance away , and they are regular buses for the return journey to Amble. At Alnmouth use the Golf club for cheap food and drink or walk to Boulmer for meal at "Fishing Boat inn" , its closed Mondays. Rothbury , lovely place, car park next to the river is free for 72 hours !! Seahouses , Northumbrian council car parking prices are a rip-off, instead use the road to Bamburgh, right hand side just out of town , free, with loads of spaces. At Bamburgh use the castle car parks £4 all day, or use the two car parks at the "Windings" which are free all day. The Northumbrian Council car park in Bamburgh is £6 for three hours !!! Also Morpeth, lovely little town, plenty of womens clothes shops and arcade, with a nice park, and a large free car park near Morrisons.

"Thee we holiday property was ideal for my friend with a downstairs bathroom and bedroom."
The kitchen was well equipped and had everything you would need to cook . Our only problem was working out how to switch the oven on , despite the instructions available .
It was very quiet despite the warning about the builders nearby , and as went out most days it did not affect us .The property is a sort walk to a wonderful beach and the Hauxley Nature reserve which also had wonderful cakes scones and breakfasts.
As it was a bit chilly we did have the heating on but that was easy to operate .
I would love to visit again and stay longer there are so many places we did not visit .

"This cottage ideally placed for peace, quiet and relaxation."
Plenty of great places to walk to from the front door. We haven't used our car all week.
Conservatory a huge bonus if weather not so good.
Ongoing building works at neighbouring property not an issue as builders kept noise/ disruption to a minimum.
No need to bring tea towels or oven gloves as suggested in instructions.
Hairdryer also supplied (but not listed)
You may wish to bring a small bottle of washing up liquid and cleaning wipes ,as
not supplied .
Spare loo roll wouldn't go amiss.
Will definitely be returning to this lovely place .

"The cottage itself was lovely."
However on arrival on Thursday before Easter weekend after a long drive, with 2 hungry young children, as a single parent, I arrived to find the code for the key box wouldn’t work. In the pouring rain, with crying children, I tried for 20 minutes, then ran Northumbria cottages and was on hold for 35 minutes - given it was now nearly 5.30pm, I eventually assumed that I was not on hold as the message was telling me and that the lines weren’t very busy and that in fact the office was probably closed. I started to walk round the village in the hope I might meet someone who knew the owners and by some miracle I did. They rang the owner and it turned out the code I’d been given was the wrong one. Appalling! I had a dinner reservation which I missed and told my upset children I’d cobble together something when finally in. On getting in, I walked round the cottage to find no towels or bed linen despite being told there would be at the properly. Then I had to Google the nearest large supermarket where I had to drive my pretty hacked off kids to buy bed linen. They didn’t have any towels so I had to buy a beach towel which the 3 of us used for the weekend. By the time I actually got back to the cottage and made beds and fed kids it was 10pm. A pretty rubbish start to our holiday. I expect a refund for this reason and hope all of this will be sorted before the next guests are in. The cottage itself was nice and a lovely cottage but the start really ruined it for us.
Thank for your sending us your review. We are incredibly sorry for the experience you have had and want to acknowledge that this was our mistake at NCCC. This property was new on our system and we missed the opportunity to have this ready for guests on this occasion. We work on behalf of the owner and this was our responsibility. Since your experience we have put new processes in place to ensure that this doesn’t happen again and we have obviously been in touch with you to refund your rental. As you have mentioned the property is lovely and we hope you would consider coming back in the future to enjoy a better holiday.
