  • "Basic accommodation but the location sells it every time."

Wi-Fi would be good as mobile reception rubbish. Very comfortable bed and shower good. Extractor fan for hob not working. No small glasses for fruit juice etc so bought three from charity shop and have left them there. No fish slice for use with frying pan for eggs, bacon etc. Conservatory extremely hot as no windows open due to no key for the locks. Couldn’t leave door open as dogs would get out as garden not secure. BBQ would be a good addition in garden. Suggest putting dining table in lounge next to window to take advantage of the lovely view and very cramped in kitchen if you have four staying. Sofa could be repositioned. There’s a lot could be done with interior to make it more attractive, comfortable and better use of space downstairs in particular but if the cottage is booked up most of the time I guess the location is the reason why we and others keep coming back.

  • "Well what a disappointment, Tired, ill equipped and poorly decorated property that is in need for a total rehaul to meet present day property rental expectations."

Hand written does and don't reminiscent of a 1950s boarding house!. Who ever heard of no hot water - that is if you require the central heating. Its either one or the other with no apologies for this money making basic and I do mean basic property. My elderly mother said 'ohh it feels like camping inside a building' - but sadly with less modern facilities. 2025 and no wifi despite plenty of internet reception. This is just an example of the owners not wishing to add to any expense and for them to maximise on profit. Certainly not worth the money. The only positive is the location.

Was very disappointed to read your review. Firstly, cannot understand why you couldn't have both heating and hot water on simultaneously the boiler was only installed last year and can only judge this was a user error. Our property details state that there is no Wi-Fi at the property. Over the last six months I have had the bathroom re-decorated a new hob installed in the kitchen and the bath re-enamelled. Pleased you appreciated the location. Property Owner

  • "The property is in a wonderful location overlooking the sea and being very close to the beach."

The house was clean throughout and had most of the facilities that were required with a good cooker, washing machine etc. We were hoping that the back garden was fully enclosed for our dog but the driveway was open and the front gate could not be closed so that left an escape route. Also another problem for us was the lack of hot water from the taps. Even though we followed the instructions to heat the water the best the temperature reached was only lukewarm and a kettle had to be boiled to do the washing up, shave and wash hands, etc. throughout the day. However there was a very good shower with plenty of hot water which was appreciated. Even with the above problem we still had a lovely week and really enjoyed our stay.

Thank you for your feedback and am really pleased you enjoyed your stay. As regards the lack of hot water I feel it was a shame that it wasn't reported to NCCC who could have looked into the issue. Have to say that our following guests have not had such problems with the hot water system. Property Owner

  • "A perfect location by the beach in lower Newton on sea."

This is, as advertised a 'no frills property' and I was pleaseantly surprised that it was clean and tidy throughout. We found not being able to eat as a family with our children around a table inconvenient (there is only room for 2 on kitchen table). The lack of WiFi is difficult in the absence of 4G access.

Great that you enjoyed the location of 1 St Mary's Cottages. Regarding the dining table in the kitchen I feel three people would comfortably be able to dine there with the possibility of pulling out the table to sit four. Property Owner

  • "Fab location and good basic accommodation."

So close to beach and pub. Downstairs toilet takes long time to refill after flushing which has been mentioned by another customer. Wi-Fi would be a welcome addition. Kitchen utensils (wooden ones) need replacing. Hot water not that hot even after adjusting heating as instructed. Overcame that by boiling kettle for washing up and using shower which was good. That said, these little glitches wouldn’t put us off coming back! We love Northumbrian area, so quiet compared to Devon and Cornwall. Beaches are amazing and so much history connected to battles and castles as so close to border of Scotland. Boat trip to Farne islands a must, lucky to see Dolphins. Villages of Ford and Etal with light railway a good day out.

  • "Basic holiday cottage with superb location."

We were warm and cosy throughout our stay. Although the property would benefit from extensive renovations, the owner would need to know that the rear of the house is insecure as the conservatory doesn't lock properly and there is no key to lock the lounge door into the conservatory. Also there was a small leak on the radiator in the hall.

Many thanks for leaving a review and I'm glad you enjoyed the stunning Northumbrian coast line. Good to hear that you found your stay both cosy and comfortable. We definitely take on board that the cottage could do with some refurbishment, sadly we have had to fork out £6500 for a new boiler on top of roof renovations this year! It is something we are looking into in the future. With regards to the conservatory lock, this has not been an issue to date however we will be getting this checked straight away, along with the hall radiator - so thank you for bringing these issues to light. • "The taps were very difficult to use because they are so stiff and difficult to turn."

The double/king bedframe in the main bedroom is coming apart at the head end on the side nearest the door. The downstairs toilet cistern refills too slowly and therefore will not always flush, and the cistern lid comes up when flushing. The radiator in the hall is leaking (end furthest from the front door) Wi-Fi would make a big difference to this property, as would a more comfortable mattress on the main bed, and more comfortable seating. Te instructions for using the heating in the house folder are incorrect. We managed to turn on the heating, but by accident and without really knowing what we did that was the right thing. We were prepared for all of this because we had read the reviews. We appreciate that the owner considers this a “no frills” holiday home, but it still needs basic levels of comfort. Yes, it is half the price of other holiday lets in the village (we have stayed in 3 others in Low Newton) but that doesn’t justify it not being comfortable.

  • "Location fantastic plenty of hot water and on the 3 nights that was cold heating good."

Towels of good quality and nice welcome pack. That's the positive now for the bad, on arrival found crockery and cutlery and cooking utensils dirty and full of grease. Was not aware of large unfenced drop from patio to lawn area plus steps down broken. Lawn had been mowed but grass left so dog and ourselves were trailing it in. Front gate could not shut as it is breaking when you try to move it. Both bed and sofa uncomfortable . It's such a pity because were it is with some money spending on it,it would be a gold mine. Will not be back . Did f8nd iron on floor and broken reported it and it was changed within a few days .

Paragraph 8.1.4 Ensure that the property is properly maintained, clean, tidy and in good repair at the start of the holiday. This failed on numerous accounts. If you had read or even responded to my numerous emails it would have been polite and maybe some action on this would have been appreciated. Paragraph 8.1.12 Respond to complaints This has not happened!!!!!!!!! Also on the 1st November I spoke to a lady called Michelle in your offices regarding my lost property erty of 2 sweaters which I had been chasing for 2 weeks. When someone actually bothered to go to the house to look for them. Subsequently they were found and I have had to pay £15 for post and packing this I did,via Michelle on the 1st November at 3.35pm. I still have not received the sweaters and it is now the 7th November WHERE ARE MY SWEATERS??????????

  • "Great location and lovely accommodation."

Good shower and decent sized rooms. No phone service cover in the area which was lovely, but no WIFI in the cottage meant we were completely cut off. No towels provided except a hand towel and a bath mat. We think the towels may have been forgotten. We did not reach out but instead bought some. Quite a strong smell of oil in the hallway when the heater is in use - think this should be looked into.

Dear Emma, Thanks for your comments regarding your stay at 1 St Mary's Cottages. I apologise for the lack of towels and have highlighted this issue to ensure it doesn't happen again. Regarding the smell of oil have been told by my heating engineer that this can occur particularly in the winter depending on the direction of the wind. A filter was put on the outside wall to help overcome this problem. The boiler is regularly maintained and we have a carbon monoxide monitor in place. Property Owner

  • "This property has a fantastic location but the property itself is in dire need of an upgrade as it is very tired."

Disappointed that there was no starter pack for the fire. Seating in living room very uncomfortable (the seating in front of the window especially) Mattresses not very comfortable. Duvets very thin & no extra duvets or heavy blankets. In general just in need of a lick of paint. Hoover barely works. Toaster was tripping the electric. Brilliant location, big garden for dog. But would hesitate to stay here again due to the above.

Dear Susan Thanks for your feedback on your recent stay at 1 St Mary's Cottages. The issues you have raised are being looked into & we have replaced the toaster as a matter of urgency. May I add that the cottage was partially redecorated in April 2022. Best Wishes Debbie Jackman Property Owner

  • "Too many problems to write about."

This property must be refurbished before let out again !!

Dear Carrell, I'm sorry 1 St Mary's Cottages did not live up to your expectations. I take constructive feedback from my visitors seriously so it is a shame that you did not mention the specifics of the problems you encountered during your stay. With regards to the refurbishment comment, the property photos are a true reflection of the cottage's amenities and style. In addition, the property has recently been redecorated with new windows put in and a new TV installed since the website pictures were taken. It is true that the cottage is by no means a luxury accommodation and this is reflected in the price. Feedback from my new and returning visitors has repeatedly shown that their holiday priority is location rather than high end extras. I aim to provide a comfortable, homely base that is dog friendly from which to explore the beautiful Northumberland coastline. Best wishes Property Owner
