  • "Bamburgh is our happy place and we have stayed in many different cottages over the years."

We had a great week in the cottage as a family of four. It is beautifully designed by the owner however it needs some attention in various different places. The negatives…… 1. Double bed in master. The bed has succumbed to come to wear and tear - my teenage son had to be careful turning over so not to dislodge the slats underneath the mattress. I reported this to maintenance during our stay. 2. Mattress in master has a ridge down the middle which makes you feel like you’re going to roll out of bed. It needs replacing. 2. Front of cottage isn’t very appealing and needs some TLC. Weeding, removal of rubbish, painting exterior. 3. Clothes line is old and worn. It’s also part covered by the over grown trees making it difficult to hang washing out to dry. 4. Garden furniture is ready for the tip. We had to use our picnic chairs when sitting in the garden. We had lovely weather and weren’t able to dine in the garden due to the old and tired table and chairs. 5. Most of the windows don’t open. 6. The two cream upholstered chairs in the lounge whilst they’re aesthetically pleasing aren’t comfortable to sit and relax on. 7. Water escapes from bath making it near on impossible to bathe therefore we used the showers. The positives …. 8. Perfect location near the dunes 9. Beautifully decorated interior with lovely bathrooms. 10. Very clean cottage with well stocked kitchen. It would however be useful to have some plastic plates/bowls for young children. 11. Nice welcome pack which was very much appreciated. A great cottage! A few small tweaks would make it even better.

  • "We love coming to Periwinkle, such a lovely cottage."

It was super clean with very comfortable beds. The kitchen is well equipped with everything you need. The outside space is nice but could do with a bit of maintenance especially the table & chairs - not very comfy or clean. Also the addition of a bbq would be amazing. The tumble dryer was also faulty, no hot air. We very much look forward to coming to stay again!

Very comfy beds and the kitchen was fully stocked with everything that could be required. Very quiet area and ideally placed. Lovely rear garden also. Would certainly recommend this cottage. Thank you

Fabulous location next to the beach and 5 mins walk from Bamburgh. Parking to the rear of the property and a lovely garden to sit in when the sun shone.

  • "Beautiful little cottage perfect for exploring the area."

Only a couple of suggestions to enhance the stay - a lamp is required in living room as lighting is quite bright and the bath plug doesn’t seal so needs to be replaced. Fabulous place none the less. Definitely recommend to anyone!

Thank you for your feedback. So good to hear positive thoughts about the cottage. Lamp and plug noted and action will be taken. Thank you Property Owner

  • "I loved this charming, well maintained cottage."

It was lovely and clean, towels and bed linen very fresh and great quality. Cleaning materials were also provided and bottle of wine left in the fridge was very thoughtful. Full details on how to light the log burner was a great help as we have not used one before. The only thing I would have changed was the mattress in the main bedroom as I found it too hard, but that’s a personal preference. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would love to come back.

Thank you for your feedback - so pleased you had a pleasant stay Property Owner

  • "We would have given 5 stars, however, on arrival at Periwinkle it had not been serviced from the previous occupants!"

!! Getting in touch with anybody from Sykes or Northumbria Cottages was abysmal! No out of hours services at all with either, not really good if you have a major problem. Did get a message saying someone from the emergency team would call within 20 minutes, guess what? no call! We managed to find mattress & pillow protectors for the beds instead of sheets and pillowcases and a couple of scratty towels! Had to divvy up the meagre bit of toilet roll between the four of us, no shops open on a Sunday after 4pm in Bambrough or Seahouses! Cleaned the two toilets and sinks, left the showers. Called Sykes or Northumbria Cottages the following morning at 9am and they said you could see that we had logged a call! Anyhoo, a very nice lady appeared about 10am and was quite mortified at what had happened, no apology from Sykes or NC though!!! Apart from all of that, Periwinkle is a really nice cottage with good amenities. We were warm and cosy and really enjoyed it. A very good base to go from for all the things we wanted to do and see in the area.

I’m so very sorry this happened to you. Not what you want to find when you arrive for a relaxed trip - an omission on our part led to this (no excuses) - never happened before, won’t again. Hopefully the compensation went some way to saying sorry. Sorry again. Property Owner

  • "A well laid out cottage, with good furnishings, in a perfect location."

It was obvious that this was once a beautiful, well cared for, property _ but sadly it is now lacking TLC, maintenance and a deep clean. However, we all thoroughly enjoyed our stay!

Thank you for the feedback and sorry you found the cottage lacking. Feedback noted and actions taken. Property Owner

  • "Fabulous cottage , would have been good to have oven gloves and some of the pans don't work on the induction hob."

    Otherwise lovely.

Thanks for pointing this out. There are oven gloves but they are the silicone ones…I have replaced with more obvious ones and replaced the non induction pans. Property Owner

  • "Wonderful location for the beach and beautiful building."

As a previous review states the listing is inaccurate as the castle is not visible from the property. Within walking distance to Bamburgh Castle and village. The house benefits from onsite car parking. Overall the house is well equipped, some tired aspects for example the mattress in the double bedroom has a raised ridge down the middle, it's time for it to be replaced, was even visible with duvet on the bed. Outdoor patio set has seen better days. Cleaning throughout was not to a high standard, we stuck to the dining table on our first evening meal. Property instructions were clear and thorough.

  • "This is a comfortable and well-thought out cottage."

It is nicely equipped and the Wi-Fi is excellent. The location is great for the coasts and historical sites of Northumberland. The listing talks of attractive and captivating views of Bamburgh castle from the dining table. This is not true in the summer because bushes hide it. Even in winter the castle would appear quite distant. From the window you can see the garden which is a good size and tidy but not particularly attractive. Apart from the inaccurate listing I would recommend this as a place to stay- we had a fantastic holiday. NB it was quite noisy during the day because the neighbours were having a lot of work done on their house.

About the location

BAMBURGH

Seahouses 3.5 miles; Beadnell 5.1 miles; Alnwick 16.9 miles.

The village’s sweeping sandy beaches and dramatic fortress - Bamburgh Castle - make Bamburgh one of Northumberland’s major visitor attractions. The castle can be seen for miles and dominates this part of the county’s coastline. Today it remains home to the family of the great Victorian industrialist Lord Armstrong, and is open to the public on a daily basis. Although overshadowed by the great castle, Bamburgh village is picturesque with neat grey stone cottages facing a manicured village green. There are excellent pubs, hotels with restaurants and a small selection of village shops. There are golf courses in Bamburgh and nearby Seahouses, and within easy reach are more wide sandy beaches, lovely fishing villages, stunning castles and coastal islands to explore along the dramatic Heritage Coast. There are numerous other attractions also a short drive away, including the famous Alnwick Castle and Gardens and the historic walled border town, Berwick-upon-Tweed. A superb base for exploring Northumberland.
