What guests are saying
Our family has stayed at this property 3 times, it's a great spot with country walks; it's cosy and worked well for our short stay although I feel a bit expensive per night.
For the last two visits we have asked for the beds to be separated. It was confirmed by email that this would be done but unfortunately it was not. Not ideal but as we were only staying 3 nights we managed.
We’ve stayed in a lot of self-catering accommodation, so we naturally compare places based on the little touches that make somewhere feel like a real home away from home.
There were some lovely aspects to our stay, but unfortunately, for the price per night, we felt the property was missing some of those finishing touches. On arrival, we appreciated the welcome basket with cakes, wine and biscuits, which was a lovely gesture. We also thought the provision of fans in both the main bedroom and downstairs was very considerate, particularly as the weather was warm. The location itself has some great features too, with a lovely forest area directly across the road which our dog absolutely loved for off-lead walks. However, as dog owners, we wouldn’t describe the property as particularly dog friendly. While dogs are allowed, there are quite strict rules around them, and there didn’t seem to be much provided for dogs themselves – no bowls, towels, beds or throws for the sofa, for example. We completely understand that properties need rules, particularly regarding furniture, but we did notice quite a lot of dog hair on the sofa despite the rule that dogs are not allowed on the furniture. It would also be really helpful if restrictions such as dogs not being allowed on sofas or upstairs were made very clear in the online “About the Property” information, as this could be a deciding factor for many dog owners when booking. Overall, we felt the property was more “dog tolerant” than genuinely dog friendly. There were also a few areas where the cleanliness and facilities could be improved. The roasting/baking trays were very dirty and really needed a thorough clean or replacement. Although we bring our own tea and coffee, the containers provided were empty and dirty. There were no hand soaps in the bathrooms or complimentary body wash, which, although not essential, is usually a nice welcoming touch in self-catering accommodation. Basic cooking essentials such as oil, salt and pepper would also have been appreciated. The property could also benefit from some area rugs to make it feel warmer and more homely. Being semi-detached, there is also quite a lot of noise from the adjoining accommodation. We could hear conversations and even things such as someone plugging something into the wall at around 10pm, which did impact on the feeling of peace and privacy. Despite these criticisms, there are some excellent things to do nearby. Hollies Farm Shop was a real highlight, with a lovely coffee shop and restaurant, a fantastic farm shop selling fresh produce and ready-made food, and plenty to look around. Dogs are only allowed in the outdoor seating area, but it was definitely worth a visit. Chester Zoo was also an amazing experience and well worth doing. Overall, we enjoyed our time in Chester and the location has some real positives, particularly the forest opposite and the nearby attractions. However, having stayed in many self-catering properties, we felt this one lacked some of the little touches that create that genuine “home away from home” feeling, especially considering the price per night. With some improvements to cleanliness, basic provisions, dog-friendly facilities and the overall homely feel, we think the property could be significantly better.
We stayed in the adjoining cottage at Christmas and looked forward to this trip.
On arrival the beds had not been separated and there was no cutlery in the main drawer. Also the drawer in the fridge and the bathroom sink were dirty they had not been cleaned. There was also nightwear and a hoodie on the back of the bathroom door from a previous renter. I messaged to ask for the above to be actioned and was told they would but no one came, I tried messaging a few more times and no response. It’s such a shame as the house is lovely but it’s not being looked after, and it doesn’t feel great when you’re ignored! The paint was coming off the windows ledges, there are cobwebs all around. I did find cutlery in another drawer thankfully!
