The history was so interesting. The house was well equipped and it was lovely for us all to sit together round the table. Our party was aged between 3 and 77 and we all enjoyed our weekend. The ground floor bedroom and shower was great.Despite the wet weather the children enjoyed the garden and toys. We would love to return one day.

Clean, comfortable and warm in mid February. There was plenty of space and hot water for our family of 8 with an amazing array of useful kitchen facilities. Very helpful owners who instantly replied to text messages with help and kindness. If it were in the summer we would have found the garden somewhat small for 3 boys (ages 9-12), however in wet February weather we were unableto venture out into the grounds anyway.

Perfect location for the fishing. The garden is beautiful. Only comment. Downstairs bed mattress is really uncomfortable and it’s a pity the duvet’s & pillows are not a better quality to match the house. The outlook, lambs & peacock were special.

The grandchildren were delighted to find all the toys there and loved playing in the garden and watching the sheep in the field next door. The area is beautiful and we enjoyed the local market in Congleton. We did find getting three largeish cars on the drive a little bit tricky but it was manageable. I would heartily recommend this cottage to anyone looking to explore some beautiful countryside from a comfortable base.

Janet did come when we were unable to get the Television working, but no joy with the DVD, which would have been nice to relax with after a day out sightseeing. No netflix working on television downstairs. Be aware that hob and oven take a while to heat up. Otherwise a delightful stay.

  • "We really loved our stay at Gun End Cottage, a cottage full of character in a beautiful part of the world."

The cottage is well equipped and comfortable with an interesting history that you can read about in the information folder, this folder also has a tongue in cheek poem about the cottage and its idiosyncrasies which made us smile. It has a simple quaint appeal, if you appreciate fittings from an earlier age which we do, you will love this place, the brass door knobs, the leaded window's, the fireplaces and the Duckett basin in the upstairs bathroom. The nearest neighbours are the sheep in the field adjacent to the cottage. With every trip out you are immediately on a scenic drive. We visited Buxton, Leek and Longnor all places with individual appeal, as for walks, The Roaches, Lud Church and the Manifold Trail are great and can be made as leisurely or taxing to suit your own level of fitness. Another nice walk is to leave the cottage, turn left down the hill until reaching a footpath sign on the left for 'Gighall' which leads to the river Dane. Some of the more remote roads in this area are winding, narrow, steep and 'interesting' to say the least and one gets a great sense of achievement at journey's end.

My only slight disappointment was that the garden wasn't as big as I had expected from the photographs but it didn't really matter. We managed a couple of short walks from the doorstep with an OS map and drove for other more well-trodden routes. The conservatory at the back made an excellent boot room! The cottage itself is warm and comforting in the winter months. It has everything you need for a self catering stay and is conveniently located for functions at Heaton House Farm, where we attended a wedding. There was a slight mix up with the keys but this was speedily corrected, without detriment to our stay, and the sisters could not apologise enough for the small oversight. There are four good sized bedrooms, a large sitting room and an equally large kitchen table around which you can all eat in comfort, making it an ideal place to stay if you have a large group of people in your party. If the need arises in the future I would have no hesitation in staying at this property again.

It was well equipped and laid out, and had been prepared very nicely for us. We use the DVD player to watch a film one evening; it worked well and instructions were easy to follow. Our group has two trips a year and we all agreed this had been one of the best - the fabulous May weather helped of course! Just two very minor niggles - one is that it looks as though no expense has been spared for most of the work in the cottage - fittings are done to a very high standard, the furnishings were great, etc. But the pans in the kitchen were very thin bottomed, and although we're all pretty experienced cooks we had problems with burning the pan bottoms. The other point wasn't one that bothered us particularly, but it might be worth flagging up more clearly that there's no wifi in the cottage. Some people will see this as an advantage anyway (it may help get the kids away from their screens!), others might not be aware of it as wifi is becoming more standard these days, and may see it as a negative. These are really minor points. Overall we had a very good stay and the cottage definitely met or exceeded expectations. Thanks!
