  • "A really nice little cottage for two people."

Lovely warm shower room. A little chilly downstairs but woodburner solves this. The only downside for us (not being young) was creeping downstairs in the night. Watch the stone step at the bottom of the stairs. A nice peaceful location despite being not far from a busy road. There are numerous lovely walks nearby including along the canal. Lovely wildflowers in Goytside meadows. We had beautiful weather. Please note there aren't many cash machines in New Mills but some takeaways only take cash! Handy location for visiting the wider area.

Thank you for your lovely and detailed review! We’re glad you enjoyed the peaceful location, lovely walks, and the warm shower room. It’s great to hear the wood burner helped keep you cosy downstairs. We appreciate your helpful note about the stone step and the cash machine availability in New Mills—both very useful tips for future guests. We’re so pleased you had beautiful weather and enjoyed exploring the wider area. We’d love to welcome you back anytime! ABC Holiday Cottages Property Owner

  • "Very comfortable and cosy, excellent location with a selection of books for evenings or wet days although no board games."

Internet provided is not secure and poor, so used phone as a hot-spot for streaming movies in the evenings. Kitchen adequately equipped for light meals, could do with a pizza cutter though! Bathroom great, shower incredible with lashings of hot water. Mind your head in the bedroom! If bedroom ceiling/window alcove was painted in a contrasting colour it would help to notice, as I some vision impairment. Lots of easy walking within reach. Would highly recommend:)

Thank you for your detailed and kind review! We’re delighted to hear you found the cottage comfortable and enjoyed the excellent location with plenty of walking nearby. It’s great that you loved the shower and appreciated the selection of books. We really appreciate your helpful suggestions about the internet, board games, pizza cutter, and the bedroom alcove—these are all valuable points that we’ll look into to improve the stay for future guests. Your recommendation means a lot to us, and we hope to welcome you back soon! ABC Holiday Cottages Property Owner

  • "Please ignore previous review about the property only being dog tolerant."

There is plenty of room to exercise your dog. It's a working marina so you should expect to put your dog on a lead. Also if you light the wood burner it's obvious the heat will rise to the mezzanine. We negated this by opening a window shortly before bed. The property is very well situated and is very well equipped. I didn't realise how lovely the Peak District is. There so many good walks from the cottage. New Mills is also served by 2 railway stations which gives you plenty of options.

Thank you for your updated feedback. We’re glad to hear you enjoyed the spaciousness for your dog and appreciated the working Marina environment. Your tips about using a lead and managing the wood burner heat are very helpful for future guests. It’s wonderful that you discovered how lovely the Peak District is and enjoyed the great walks from the cottage. The convenient railway stations in New Mills certainly make exploring even easier! We appreciate your thoughtful comments and hope to welcome you back soon. ABC Holiday Cottages Property Owner

  • "This is a really nice cottage."

Very well maintained & clean throughout with a great location on the canal for walks. Parking bay immediately outside is very helpful. The kitchen is fully equipped. The downstairs bathroom is a good size and is very warm with ample towels. Free Wi-Fi worked fine for us. The tv is modern with hdmi inputs for fire stick, dvd player etc if you want your own evening entertainment. As others have said, the mezzanine bedroom can get ridiculously hot & stuffy with the rising heat. The log fire was great and bags of logs can be bought at the marina office for approx £8. There is no enclosed space for the dog - it’s an open area with bench & bbq facilities. It’s also helpful that Torrside brewery is the building next door & has its own bottle shop to sample their lovely ales. It would be great to stay there in the summer months.

Thank you for your detailed and positive review! We’re delighted to hear you enjoyed the cottage’s cleanliness, great canal-side location, and well-equipped kitchen. It’s great that the parking bay and warm downstairs bathroom added to your comfort. We appreciate your helpful tips about the mezzanine bedroom heat, the log fire, and the dog-friendly outdoor area. It’s also lovely to hear you enjoyed having Torrside Brewery so close by. We look forward to seeing you in the summer months. ABC Holiday Cottages Property Owner

  • "A scrupulously clean little cottage."

The facilities are really good, with everything you should need. A peaceful setting, yet very walkable to all of the town's facilities, which were great. The check in and all service offered was excellent. Tip: upstairs gets very warm if you have the heating/fire on downstairs, so we opened the upstairs windows in order to be able to sleep. One thing: would benefit from some cushions/more comfy/cosy seating in the lounge.

Thank you for your feedback. We're thrilled to hear you found the cottage scrupulously clean and well-equipped, and that you enjoyed the peaceful setting with easy access to the town's amenities. We're glad the check-in process and service met your expectations. ABC Holiday Cottages Property Owner

  • "The only real issue with the property is that it is more dog tolerable than dog friendly."

There is nowhere to just let the dog out which was a bit of a pain having to take him out on the lead numerous times a day especially as it was -5 degrees during our stay. Also, as heat rises, with having the log burner on so much due the freezing weather, the upstairs mezzanine bedroom gets really hot. Not having an upstairs toilet a bit of a pain also. Nice little cottage and marina, probably lovely in the warmer summer months.

Thank you for your feedback. We’re glad you enjoyed the cottage and marina overall, and we appreciate you sharing the challenges you experienced. We understand how important it is for dog owners to have easy outdoor access, especially in cold weather, and we’re sorry this caused inconvenience during your stay. Thank you again for your valuable comments. ABC Holiday Cottages Property Owner

  • "Nice little cottage for one or two."

Good location - New Mills has a good arty vibe about it. Perfect for long canal and woodland walks. The wood burner is a treat. The only downside was the connectivity: Freeview TV is janky during bad weather, and the WiFi is not a secured network. I would (and quite probably will) book again.

Thank you for your feedback! We’re delighted you enjoyed the cottage’s cosy feel, great location, and the wood burner—perfect for those canal and woodland walks. We appreciate your feedback about the TV signal and the WiFi security, and we’re looking into ways to improve both for future stays ABC Holiday Cottages Property Owner

  • "Fabulous property ideally situated for seeing the local area and walking and with the train stations only 2 and 10 mins away it gave us direct access to Buxton and Edale without needing the car."

This is a small property and it states it's for 4 people. There's a double bed upstairs on the mezzanine floor and a sofa bed downstairs - think this would be very cosy for any period of time. However, it was just the 2 of us and our small dog so great. Well kitted out kitchen with everything you need. Laundry facilities next to the marina office for a small fee. Starter kit included for the fire and you can purchase more fuel and logs from the marina office. Few minor points. The first is that the lighting in the living / dining area is provided by lamps. Lovely and cosy, but restricted if you're doing jigsaws etc (as we were!). Secondly the upstairs area gets very hot so if you're like us and prefer to sleep in a cold room, we ended up throwing the windows wide open when we went to bed. And finally the Wi-Fi speed is adequate but limited. Didn't bother us at all but might others!! Would definitely recommend - we didn't want to come home!

Thank you so much for your detailed and thoughtful review! We're so pleased to hear you enjoyed the property's location and found it ideal for exploring the local area without needing the car—Buxton and Edale are such lovely places to visit. It’s great to know the cottage worked well for you, your partner, and your dog, and that you found the kitchen well-equipped and the laundry facilities handy. We really appreciate your constructive comments too. We'll certainly look into ways to improve lighting in the living/dining area for guests doing activities like jigsaws, and we’ll pass on your notes about the Wi-Fi speed. Spotlessly clean and with everything we needed. Staff very friendly and helpful. Only observations would be that care needs to be taken in the mezzanine bedroom as the roof slant is very low and head space around one side of the bed is very limited. Also, it might be useful to have a lock on the bathroom door. It was absolutely fine for us but if 2 couples were staying it might be more awkward. Overall a lovely stay in a lovely spot.

The property

The Hay Barn is an inviting cottage set just paces from the canal within the New Mills Marina, Derbyshire.

Upon arrival you are greeted with a designated parking space for one car, but due to this central location in the town, you’ll hardly need the car all week!

Step into the open-plan living space and take over the kitchen, preparing a delicious meal before retreating to the sofa and spending some downtime beside the woodburning stove.

Freshen up in the ground-floor shower room before heading upstairs to the mezzanine bedroom.

To the outside is a small patio space housing a picnic bench, where you can enjoy your morning coffee before heading into the town centre.

Well-placed for accessing the delights of New Mills, Hayfield and the Peak District, The Hay Barn is a great escape for couples.

Note: This property can be booked with Ref. 1126269, together sleeping up to 14 guests.
