  • "This was our second stay at the cottage and it was just as good as the first time."

It is spotlessly clean and particularly well equipped. All the furniture is good quality and the beds are particularly comfortable. The pub opposite is very cosy and welcoming. The Hackney House cafe round the corner is lovely and sells great takeout quiches, croissants, pies, cakes and toasted sandwiches so you don’t need to cook if you don’t want to! We will definitely be back and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it.

  • "Absolutely fantastic place to stay."

Cottage had everything you could possibly need. The cottage was spotless with a fully equipped kitchen that had everything from a teaspoon to a first aid kit. The lounge had really good quality furniture that was very comfortable, really strong Wi-Fi (which you will need as internet service isn’t the best in the area ) and a smart tv on the wall. There is a separate room that houses the asking machine under the stairs. We only used the double bed as there was only 2 of us. OMG it was so comfortable. Good quality furniture and bedding makes all the difference. The bathroom had a walk in shower that had plenty of constant hot water. The heated towel rail warmed the room up lovely. The window blinds throughout the house were really thick so blocked out the light for a good nights sleep. The only thing I would maybe suggest would be a blind on the front door to block out the light from the pub across the road. This is only for spoilt dogs like ours that are used to sleeping in the dark

Plus a little welcome gift which we enjoyed. The beds were comfortable and the bathroom/shower was excellent. Would highly recommend it to our friends. Best regards Declan and Carole Carroll

  • "The property is very well maintained and spotlessly clean."

The beds are very comfortable and the shower is lovely and warm. Bedding and towels are high quality. The kitchen is very well equipped and there was a lovely welcome pack. The description is accurate and there were folders of helpful information on the surrounding area. The cottage was warm and cosy. It is directly opposite a beautiful pub with its own brewery. Just round the corner is a Hackney House cafe and bakery. It sells amazing croissant, pies, quiches and cakes to take away. We would not hesitate to return. The only slight issue would be if you were a party of four as there is only comfortable seating for three. We also would have appreciated a coffee table that we could have eaten our meals from as the dining table is really tiny. That won’t stop us coming back though. This is a lovely cottage.

  • "Enjoyable stay in a well presented, clean cottage in a lovely central location."

Everything that you need is provided, plus a few extras, only thing missing for us was a bread bin. Beds were very comfortable. Fantastic cafe just around corner and lovely pub opposite. Would highly recommend .

Thank you for your feedback, we decided not out a bread bin in becauseg we thought there wouldn’t be any need. But given your comments, I now appreciate the need so one will be added to the kitchen inventory, Thanks, Paul Property Owner

It is so well equipped that you only need to bring your clothes & food. It was such a great getaway for me & the dog that I extended the stay to 11 days in total - I was sad to leave this morning Thank you so much Paul

Thank you for your positive feedback and I’m so pleased you enjoyed your stay and we look forward to accommodating you again in the future. Paul Property Owner

  • "This old property has been tastefully renovated to provide a modern, very comfortable holiday let, with the rather quirky layout adding to its charm and evoking its historic use."

It is well equipped with good quality fixtures and fittings and has the added bonus of a great pub across the road and an excellent deli/cafe just round the corner. Ample off-road parking is another big plus. The outdoor seating might be better located at the far end of the driveway say, rather than next to the road….but that’s just a minor point which does not detract from the appeal of the property. Highly recommended.

Thank you for your positive feedback, I take your point about the outdoor seating and I have a larger table and chairs for the far end of the drive, but need to acquire a small lockable but accessible store for the chairs, which I am looking for. Paul Property Owner

  • "Thank you Paul for the welcome pack."

Smithy Cottage was one of the best we have stayed in. It was very comfortable and well equipped. It had its own parking. It was also beautifully and tastefully presented. The bathroom sink was very small and quite hard to have a shave or a wash in. It was my husband who wanted a shave! That was its only negative apart from maybe a little noise from the Peacock. The proximity to The Peacock was also an advantage as we had our tea there.

Thank you for your positive feedback, unfortunately we tried to accommodate a larger basin in the shower room but the width of the room was a major deciding factor and one which we had to take on board when choosing the basin size unfortunately. It seems The Peacock has its plus points as well as its minus’s, unfortunately there’s nothing we can do about the latter. Paul Property Owner

  • "We were very pleased with the cottage and the off-road parking."

Our dog isn’t an “escape artist” and being able to let her wander about when we were outside was good. The location with The Peacock across the road and the Hackney Cafe on the corner was wonderful!

Many thanks for your feedback Mr Austin, I’m sorry you found our cottage not up to standard on cleanliness. If you would care to expand on this it would be much appreciated as we are new to this and aim for the highest of standards, therefore, any issues we need to address we would like to know about. Thank you, Paul Property Owner

  • "As previously described by another guest, we were fully aware that the pub opposite received early deliveries and we shouldn't expect to sleep in."

.. Not really an issue for us, as we're early risers. This is outside of the operators control, but perhaps is worth noting for some. The property is lovely and comfortable, and it's great to have off road parking. The beds are firm, but we found them comfortable and we had a great nights sleep . Kitchen pretty much has everything you need, however I would recommend that more crockery is provided, i.e. dining plates and even tea plates, although I appreciate they're not standard these days, but a biscuit really does look lost on those big plates. It's clear from the feedback made already that they take the comments seriously and they are proactive to remedy issues raised, apologies, I didn't have time to fill in the visitors book! Literally pub on your door step and around the corner a lovely cafe with fresh made pies and cakes and a great breakfast too, wished we'd discovered it earlier in our stay. Good information pack available, however I would suggest a few tweaks and to the advertising descriptions, happy to expand on this if the owner/operator wants to get in touch direct.

Thank you for your constructive criticisms Miss Parnell, this is much appreciated as we only opened the cottage to visitors in September last year, we are really ‘learning on the job’ so to speak. Any suggestions you have for the information pack would be greatly appreciated, if you would care to share them. Property Owner

  • "Lovely cute cottage."

Very clean and was well equipped. Bedrooms good size and beds comfortable. Beautiful views from the main bedroom. Great driveway space. Would recommend taking slippers as sometimes the downstairs felt a bit cold under foot. There is no local shop to walk to, a drive away of a couple of miles. This wasn't a problem for us as we were out every day and near a shop at some point. We went to 'The Peacock' for our first night to have some dinner which is literally over the road from the property. Delicious food and very welcoming. We really enjoyed our stay. Thank you.

As we were first visitors everything was near perfect the only thing not perfect were the mattresses which were very hard very well equipped Very close to pub about 3 metres and deliveries started from 7 in the morning so a lie in would have been impossible but as early rises to us not a problem A fan would have been nice as very very hot in the cottage Reported freezer not working and slight leak to toilet

About the location

CHESTERFIELD

Matlock 10 miles; Chatsworth 10 miles; Bakewell 13 miles.

The historic market town of Chesterfield acts as the gateway to the Peak District, and has much to offer visitors. The town is famous for its 14th Century church with "Crooked Spire", twisting curiously from its true centre, while the frequent bustling market days are ideal for exploring the many different specialist shops and stalls which line the old Market Hall and charming Shambles beyond. The town also boasts Queens Park, with its lake, walks and summer bandstand, as well as a museum and theatre. Nearby, the Elizabethan Hardwick Hall is still impressive today, with its 6 grand towers elaborately monogramed with Bess of Hardwick’s initials, overlooking the superb gardens and walled courtyards of the grounds. Also popular is the semi-ruined 17th Century mansion of Bolsover Castle, set high on a wooded hilltop, looking west towards the heights of the Peak District. Chesterfield has a host of other attractions within easy reach, such as Chatsworth and Haddon Hall, the amenities of Matlock and Bakewell, or the opera at Buxton. An interesting base for a varied break.
