The owners David and Christine were friendly and on hand if you had any problems. The information regarding the history of the cottage and adjoining shop that the owners have put together we found very interesting. would definitely consider booking again. Trevor.

  • "Great place to stay, cosy and quiet."

Really comfortable beds and well equipped kitchen. Nice big bathroom. Courtyard syle garden to sit out in. Location is good with frequent bus services nearby going to local places and large towns and cities to link with trains. Easy to access footpaths and varied countryside scenery and able to walk into the chatsworth estate 10 mins down the road. The owners run the shop next door which had excellent local produce , bread, meat and veg was very good and very fairly priced. Owners are friendly and on hand in the shop if you need some local knowledge of places to visit.

  • "Clematis Cottage is positioned just away from the centre of Baslow but still suffers constant road noise from the A619 which spoiled the potential for an otherwise peaceful and tranquil holiday."

The cottage itself is comfortable, but now very tired and is in need of a total refresh in particular the kitchen and the small outside garden area which was neglected, the hedge needs cutting and the pots tidying, having to look at lots of weeds and dead plants is somewhat depressing. Your first impression of the cottage is what you see on entering the garden and we were disappointed from the outset.

We found the settees very uncomfortable, very saggy and the seats far too deep, to the extent I couldn’t sit in them at all, all week. If the settees were replaced I’d rate the cottage 100%.

  • "Well what`s not to like, an earlier review said they did not like the dark furniture, this adds character to the cottage, done out very tastefully, what you want when on holiday after a cold winters day ( we had snow and heavy rain) is to come back to a warm cosy cottage and this place ticks all the boxes, The owner has the shop next door so any problems he is there for you, great for shopping for emergencies as well."

The cottage is super quiet at night, lovely kitchen, bathroom huge and both bedrooms are a great size, plenty of parking when we were there, 3 or more pubs in the village which do food and are less than 10 mins walk away. Central location for many places to visit, we would return for sure.

  • "Lovely cottage in a really excellent location to discover and enjoy the Peak District."

Lots of great walks nearby. The owners were very helpful with several different issues before, during and after the holiday. The cottage is very comfortable, but if you are self-catering for 4 people, it might be helpful to know that there is only a very small under-counter fridge (with freezer compartment), so you have to shop regularly. This is not too much of a problem, with the cottage owners' Spar next door and a Co-op down the road, but you can't stock up for the week. Also, it is a squeeze sitting 4 adults at the kitchen table - two are trapped in by the others and the kitchen units. Not ideal if you get claustrophobic. Those were minor issues though - we had a great holiday overall.

  • "Needs to highlight no guaranteed parking, advert omits to say this, looking at photo you assume you can park in front of property or by shop or at side of cottage."

Had to jostle for a space every day across the road! There is a damp smell especially in kitchen, stairs are dangerously steep! The radiators upstairs did not heat up, even though turned up fully, setting on boiler( not thermostat,) had to be altered we discovered this by Wednesday, so for 3 nights were cold. We were only informed to control heat on thermostat. Must have been on summer setting.( Could be why previous visitors left early) The cottage is small, could do with a bit more tlc on paintwork, however it is central for places like Chatsworth/Bakewell a positive point.

Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback. Our advert is very clear in that parking is roadside only; we cannot control the cars that park during your stay I'm afraid. As this is a lovely, traditional cottage, the stairs are steeper than average which is why this is clear in our description for customers to be aware before booking. I'm sorry you had trouble with the heating, had we been made aware you were struggling with the thermostat or the temperature of the property then we would have been more than happy to help you resolve this to ensure the property was warm for you, however, to be clear, our previous guests did not leave early, they booked for a short break, stayed the full duration and, as far as we are aware, did not have any issues with the heating. Thank you for your feedback which is duly noted. Property Owner

From the warm welcome from the owner to the beautiful, clean and well-equipped cottage we could not have had a better base for our week in Derbyshire. The cottage was very well presented and had all of the little touches that make you feel welcomed and “at home”. A comfortable sitting room, a lovely kitchen, two comfortable bedrooms and a very impressive bathroom - with a roll-top bath and “formidable” shower! We really appreciated all of the additional “baby” facilities that were provided - especially the stair gate (thank you). Certainly a family-friendly cottage (with family-friendly hosts). The courtyard garden (at the front) was also perfect for a leisurely breakfast in the warm weather! The cottage is perfectly located for walks/runs through the Chatsworth Estate (7mins walk away) or walks up the hill to Baslow / Curbar Edge with spectacular views (especially at sunrise / sunset). Bakewell, Hassop Station (and the Monsal Trail) and Padley Gorge were all within a very short drive (10mins) and Derwent Lake, Mam Tor and Dovedale are not much further. A perfect cottage for enjoying walks, runs or cycling in the Peak District… Thank you :-)

The cottage is linked to the village shop and post office (same owners), so during extended daytime hours there is always a helping hand nearby if required. We were given a tour of the cottage and how to light the gas stove, etc, on arrival. Also a welcome pack of bread, milk and wine which was appreciated. The cottage was plenty big enough for two adults and two children. The cottage is clean and well equipped, bedding was very comfortable, shower and bath were great, plenty of hot water. We didn't find the on-road parking an issue at all. There are a number of eateries (pubs/hotel/pizzeria) within a 10 minute walk, plus a Co-op in addition to the village shop/post office. We would recommend this property and would be happy to book again.

Generally very clean and tidy. Very well situated. However: no soap in bathroom on arrival which was not very welcoming. We left a bottle for the next family! The temperatures on the knobs on the cooker had all warn off which made it very difficult to cook meals and the shower mat was utterly filthy. Stairs were very steep and steps narrow. Large enough for two people but any more would be cramped. I would not return to this property but had an enjoyable holiday. Chatsworth Farm shop should be visited early in a holiday particularly if you want to spoil yourselves. The food they sell is delicious.

The cottage had everything we could need and was perfectly located for the activities we wanted to do while we were there. We were greeted with a pack of tea cakes and a bottle of wine, which is a lovely touch and very welcome! The cottage is situated right next to the village shop and is owned by the family who run it, so there is always help if needed and is perfect for supplies if wanted. We ate at Rowley’s, Fischer’s Baslow Hall (a treat for our anniversary) and Il Lupino Ristorante, all of them are spitting distance from the cottage and highly recommended. The Lavendar Tea Rooms in Bakewell is a particular favourite that we’ve been to on previous visits. For those that like to stay in, there are DVDs and books galore (although we noted that a lot of freeview channels were not available). WiFi is good (the details are not in the welcome pack but are on the WiFi box itself). Reception is a little hit and miss upstairs but this is an old cottage so it did not bother us. The shower is not as good as the cottage details suggest. It was basic and satisfactory. There is a lovely roll top bath as well. The cottage is near a school but we were lucky with the parking as we were there during half term but I imagine it’s a little challenging if you try and park in the early morning or afternoon during term time. However this just requires a little bit of planning around, and common sense) and it would be absolutely fine. We would definitely return to Clematis Cottage and look forward to doing so in the New Year.

About the location

BASLOW

Chatsworth 1 mile; Bakewell 5 miles.

The pretty village of Baslow lies at the north end of stately Chatsworth House - home to the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire. The village has many unusual and picturesque features including a triple-arched river bridge guarded by a toll house whose doorway is only 3 1/2 feet high! Baslow offers a range of village amenities including shops, pubs and restaurants. Close by is Bakewell, the capital of the Peak District, and home of the famous Bakewell pudding (definitely not tart!), still made locally to an old and secret recipe. Bakewell is at the scenic heart of the Peak District, and with Alton Towers also within easy touring distance, there is plenty for the whole family to enjoy.
