Callow Cottages

Whilst the property was in an idyllic rural location and ideal for a couple to get away and chill there was an evident lack of basic maintenance with light bulbs missing or failed in situ, pull light cords jammed, heated towel rail in shower room fused and not working, shower room sink blocked and very slow to drain resulting in an unpleasant odour, shower head and tray drain off cover cracked/broken, the TV was on a demand streaming service only which to the less tech savvy would is an issue, a stale smoke smell from the wood burner in the lounge was also evident, we enjoyed our stay and when these concerns are addressed it will make for a more comfortable and enjoyable stay for all

The property is a good location to explore Derbyshire from.

It's small but has enough for what you need (assuming you're out most of the time). I was there during a heatwave and the rooms were nice and cool compared to outdoors, which I really appreciated and is a definite plus for the property in the summer (it looked like it'd be cosy warm in the winter too, though I can't verify). The sofa could probably use updating as it wasn't very comfortable, but the bed definitely was, and the bedroom provided a very good night's sleep. If you're expecting five-star luxury then this is not the property for you, but if you want a base for walking, cycling and exploring then it fits the bill.

Callow Cottage is lovely, clean and welcoming and the owners are extremely kind and helpful.

The only things that stop the cottage from being ‘perfect’ are the fact that the settee is not very comfortabel and the kitchen could do with a bit more crockery; and in an ideal world, a black out curtain in the bedroom. However, the cottage has character, is very cozy and the location, although on the main street, is very quiet. It is ideal for visiting National Trust properties (we enjoyed Sudbury Hall, which was fun and Kedleston Hall which was impressive); Arkwright Cotton Mill (Derwent Heritage site) where knowledgeable and kind staff provided a wealth of information and there are some lovely shops on site; Ashbourne and Bakewell, and the local pub, The Oakover where we had a lovely meal, staff were very attentive. Due to an injury we were unable to do the walks/ cycling trips we had planned and we therefore very much hope to return to Callow Cottage, where (despite settee) we had a lovely week.

cosy, well-appointed cottage in a quiet village with easy access to the Peaks

This the second time we have stayed in this lovely cottage, it's idea for a couple to walk the Peak district you can walk the Tissington trial and to Dove Dale almost from the door.

This was a beautiful place to stay and the perfect hub for us to explore the peak district from for a week.

It took us a pass or two to spot the cottage as the front has been repainted and is known by numbers but once in we were very happy. The now wall mounted TV is proportional to the size of the room and we didn't use it all week as we were too busy out and about. The sofa is comfortable and the dining room table the perfect size. The kitchen is tidy and well equipped. The bedroom was lovely and spacious with a true cottage feel and the bed was very comfortable. There was ample space for bags and furniture and hangers provided for clothes. The bathroom whilst a little older was clean and functioning and actually quite large. I loved the little shelves to put toiletries on. For a quiet stay for two who want to go wandering in the local scenery this is an excellent choice for both comfort and price.

This is the first time in fifteen years that we've been disappointed with a rental in Great Britain.

Not enough dishes, and what little there is is placed high up (plates and glasses). However, the cupboards are filled with cleaning products, as if to only do the cleaning. Many missing light bulbs. The owners don't show up, merely lighting the entrance hall (because we arrived at night), but all the neighboring houses had their halls lit??? Really very disappointed.

Lovely little place but very remote.

It served its purpose and we enjoyed our stay 1 pub but they wouldn't let us eat because we hadn't booked !!!

On the whole we did enjoy our stay.

The cottage is in a lovely village location and parking in front of the house was very useful. Prior to our visit we did have some issues with gaining the key collection details despite leaving messages and calling both given phone numbers as requested. The cottage was generally fine but was lacking equipment and fittings in some areas. With a little more thought and a few inexpensive additions the cottage would be far more comfortable and convenient for guests. Hopefully the owner will take feedback on board and future guests will be the beneficiaries.

Lovely little cottage that had everything the two of us needed for a one week self-catering holiday.

We loved the layout, the decor, THE VIEW. The off-road parking was very handy as the cottage is on quite a narrow road and there was garden furniture there too so we took advantage of that most days. We didn't realise till we got there that there is no back door, so we had to sit in the sun out front - no big deal. We also meant to leave the owner a note to say that the bathroom light wasn't working properly. Again, no big deal, but we meant to let them know and forgot. The cottage is central to loads of places. We visited Ashbourne every day. We also visited Derby, Ilam park, Alton village, Carsington Water amongst other places. The village hotel has a wonderful restaurant where we had a delicious meal. If you want a table indoors you should book. We were happy to sit outdoors. We would definately go back as it was a lovely cottage in a lovely setting and central and close to loads of places that we didn't have time to visit. We also said if we do go again that we would bring walking shoes because there are loads of public footpaths everywhere. We mostly drove everywhere but we would like to do more walking next time. You can hire cycles from a place about 1km up the road oh, and there is a parkrun in Ashbourne.

Comfy couples cottage in lovely village near Ashbourne.

Ideal base for exploring this area, and for walking and cycling. Fantastic pub in the village. Just a couple of minor points - couldn't get the TV to work, but we only wanted to watch the news, so not a major issue, and could do with a lighter duvet for summer.

A lovely little cottage and a good base for some beautiful walks in the area.

Callow Cottage is a perfect arrival & departure point for the weary international traveller like myself.

It is comfortable, inviting, well-situated with excellent parking & close to a fine Pub - The Okeover Arms. It is indeed only habitable for 1-2 travellers, but they will be very happy there.

It is sad to say that Callow Cottages did not meet our expectations, nor did it fulfil the promise of it's description.

While the kitchen area had recently been newly fitted, and is in excellent condition, and all works as it should , the attached living area needs some TLC. The sofa is very old, and very uncomfortable, and needs replacement. The TV is difficult to work, and needs a better location. The room could also do with a fresh lick of paint. The bedroom, and the bed is very comfortable. Our worst concern is the WC bowl, which needs immediate replacement. It is severely cracked, and has been like this for a long time . It also has an ill fitting seat, which makes use uncomfortable. The shower, and shower cubicle works well, and is a really good size. Callow Cottages has a great deal of potential, and could be a real gem, and deserves to be so .

Excellent location and cosy, tidy space to rest-up and explore from.

Maintained to basic standard but that is sufficient for most persons requirements.

Callow Cottages is in a wonderful location with so many walks direct from the front door.

We stayed here four years ago and were surprised to find the settee hasn’t been replaced, it’s rather old and past it’s best unfortunately. A few more utensils in the kitchen would be handy, such as a serving spoon, a glass bowl for use in the microwave and larger wine glasses. These are minor points and could so easily be sorted. The outside chairs were very comfortable and it was lovely being able to sit in the sunshine enjoying a drink after a long walk. The pub just a short stroll down the road is definitely worth a mention, the staff are all very friendly and the food superb!

The location was perfect.

On arrival little to indicate that this was the actual cottage we were staying in. The cottage was very basic. It was warm. In our opinion, of the many we have stayed in...not one of the best sykes cottages.. disappointing.

I've stayed at Callow Cottage many times, and it never disappoints.

Even as Storm Babet raged, it was a warm and comfortable sanctuary. Loads of great walking, close access to the Tissington & High Peaks Trail networks & some terrific coffee shops in nearby Ashbourne. Be sure to have a dinner at the Okeover Arms - very close-by. I'll be booking for next year soon!

Lovely little cottage in a stunning, peaceful, location and a lovely part of the country.

Its one major downfall is that there is no through-flow of air making it very hot and stuffy in very good weather. For us in particular, my wife has mobility issues and really struggled with the staircase. It might be worth adding a comment to the listing about the staircase for future bookers. All in all a wonderful place, at a good price, that I would recommend to others without hesitation.

Nice cottage with character.

Everything clean and as expected. Location is quiet, not too many cars but only about five minutes or so drive along a country lane into Ashbourne if required. David

A quaint little cottage in a lovely village not too far from Ashbourne for local shopping and take-aways.

The owners were pleasant and helpful on arrival. Having been in other Sykes properties we found the facilities lacking a little e.g. hairdryer, drying facilities, heating for drying towels although we did find on the last day that the bathroom radiator thermostat could have been turned on. However we did have an enjoyable stay in Callow Cottage as it had a comfortable bed and sofa. It was very peaceful and we had good weather.

A lovely cottage in a quiet village with an excellent pub/restaurant nearby.

Immaculately clean, great shower. A few additions in the kitchen would enhance the self catering side. A decent new frying pan, set of Pyrex style casseroles for oven or m/wave and a couple of table spoons. Really enjoyed our short break.

Cottage was in great location.

It was cosy and had everything we needed for the week. We were worried about the lack of chopping board as didn't want to mark the work surface. The bed was very creaky.

Callow cottage is such a delightful property - well appointed and comfortable for a solo traveller.

There was an issue with the TV, requiring replacement, which the owners looked-after promptly. I'll be back in October 2023 for another stay!

Could do we some bigger glasses and the sofa in 2 bits was a bit of a pain.

The cottage was very nice and so cosy. We had a warm welcome by the owners. The cottage has all you need for a good stay. Only the curtains in the bedroom are very lightly

Lovely little cottage, really enjoyed my stay.

Perfect for two. Ideally situated and so close to Tissington Village and Dovedale-had some fabulous walks. Locals friendly. Bed was really comfortable and the shower was powerful and hot. It's a lovely, little old cottage and just some ongoing maintenance/cleaning required. Had a lovely time and will return, thank you

The listings and images were accurate.

The kitchen equipment provided was more than adequate, however a sharper knife would have been useful. Would have preferred to have had some wood / logs initially to use for the log burner - could possibly list locations to buy for future guests. Tiny criticism- whilst the TV worked, the screen size is small and the image was a bit dull. Overall, a gorgeous little property in an outstanding area.Would visit again.

Great holiday cottage for a short stay.

It was in a great location with lots to do nearby and not far from the major tourist sites. The pub in the village was great, proper pub grub but ideal for what we wanted. Enough cooking equipment for what we needed. It would have been nice to have some board games in the cottage but I understand due to Covid these were not in the property. Overall, a great stay!!

Cosy cottage and great location.

Very clean and tidy and easy to follow instructions . Would recommend a slightly large fridge/freezer , bigger TV for definite and the sofa needs to be one instead of two single seats pushed together . A great stay and would highly recommended so thank you ! :)

This is a really snug, warm cottage in a perfect location for a walking holiday.

The village pub is only a short distance away and accessible by pavement. We were made to feel very welcome there, and the pub grub is very tasty, the portions enormous. The cottage would benefit from a little more kitchen equipment, in particular, a decent cooks knife and a couple of small roasting tins. A clothes airer would help with wet clothing, and a slightly larger TV would be a bonus. However, these are only minor things and overall we had a brilliant time in this little gem of a place.

No starter pack for the wood burner, as stated in the summary of the brochure.

Kitchen utensils very minimalistic, no bread knife or teapot and cooking equipment lacking. No pan cleaners or hob cleaner.

All very nice but must complain about TV which was so small it was difficult to view.

Surely, it wouldn’t cost the owner much to provide a decent size TV.

Lovely cosy cottage in a good location.

Excellent location for Dovedale and nearby sites and attractions.

We gave a 10 score as we found this ideal for two people and great for touring and walking from the cottage.

The only downside was the black dustpan outside the front hadn't been emptied for weeks and putting it mildly stunk, as the the neighbour put her bin out on the Wednesday for collection Thursday morning we thought it best to put our cottage bin out for collection.

Great little cottage in a lovely location of the Peak District.

A lovely cottage within a peaceful village in a perfect location to explore Dovedale and Ashbourne.

We enjoyed several walks direct from the cottage, it was especially lovely walking along the river Dove. Would happily stay here again as it was so peaceful. The views across the fields are wonderful as you open the bedroom curtains. A visit to the pub, just along the road from the cottage, is the perfect end to a long walk!!

Holiday booked at short notice following cancellation of trip abroad.

Small cottage booked so we could stay in relative isolation due to corona virus. Cottage could be described as cosy. It had everything we needed for our stay. Would probably consider using cottage again. Owners on hand nearby if required.

Took 4 minutes to walk to Okeover Arms where they served good food.

Your description is overdone, it is a good cottage, but it is not " fabulously presented", you mention "Games Room" in the headings, this is not mentioned again in the description - there is no games room!

It should mention in your description that the door to the bedroom is not full height (approx 5'8") which could be a problem for some and is certainly a problem to consider if getting up in the middle of the night is required! There are only instructions for the use of the TV & freeview box, otherwise there are no guides to equipment or helpful lists of local facilities. The local pub "The Okeover Arms" has been praised in the past for good food and large portions, we certainly did not find that it was special on our visit, and it is certainly more than a " 3-minute walk", possibly a run or cycle, but it is about a quarter of a mile.

Had a great holiday - lovely cottage - nice area - good pub for food nearby.

Only problem was Friday to Friday bookings - as took us 2 hours longer than expected due to volume of traffic to get there (which someone else who had been in the cottage before us had mentioned). There would definitely be less traffic on a Saturday.

It is small and cozy, perfect for two people, and has everything you need. The village has a lovely local pub which serves great food. The Tissington trail is within walking distance from the front door as is Ashbourne with shops and places to eat. Would recommend this cottage and would stay again.
