"We enjoyed our holiday at Whim cottage , there were lovely features within it like the Mullion windows and lovely fireplace ."
It was very hot whilst we were staying there so it was lovely to come back to a cool property . The beds were also very comfortable .
The bedding was clean and the bathroom although a bit dated . I think it could just do with a little TLC as there was cobwebs in some areas and the garden and seating area outside need some attention . Facilities generally were good with plenty of cupboard space in the kitchen but again a bit dated .
For us the main negative was the noise from the two roads that it sits between as we are not used to road noise . Overall we enjoyed our stay .
Thank you for your review and for highlighting both the positives and the areas where you feel improvements could be made. We’re pleased that you enjoyed your stay at Whim Cottage and appreciated its character, including the mullioned windows, fireplace, comfortable beds, and the naturally cool interior during the hot weather.Regarding cobwebs, the cottage had been unoccupied for several days before your arrival. Although it is thoroughly cleaned and checked, its woodland setting means cobwebs can form quickly, especially in warm weather. We will continue to monitor this closely. We note your comments about the cottage feeling dated. Whim Cottage is a Grade II listed building, and many guests choose it specifically for its traditional interior and historic charm. While we understand this may not suit all tastes, preserving its character is an important part of what makes it unique. The garden and seating area are maintained regularly and intentionally kept in harmony with the surrounding woodland. While preferences vary, many guests appreciate the natural, rustic feel. We’re sorry that road noise affected your stay. Although this is outside our control, we understand that guests used to very quiet rural locations may notice it more.We would also gently note that our welcome information asks guests to contact us during their stay if anything is not meeting expectations. We did not receive any communication from you and would have been happy to address any concerns immediately. Finally, we were disappointed by the score of 3 out of 5, particularly as your review reflects several positive aspects and you stated that you enjoyed your holiday and found the cottage comfortable and well-equipped. Based on this, we hope the issues mentioned did not significantly impact your overall experience.Thank you again for your feedback. We’re glad you enjoyed your stay and appreciated the distinctive character and setting that Whim Cottage offers.

"Wonderful Grade 2 listed building with plenty of potential opportunities."
Would benefit from some TLC on the surrounding foliage in order to allow more natural light into the rooms.
Whilst the floors downstairs are tiled or stone, evidence of hairs both human and dog were evident, and lots of cobwebs in the corners of the rooms (attention to detailed upkeep not evident)
House manual mentions a welcome pack but nothing on display and no milk in the fridge so unsure what the welcome actual was.
It was a warm weekend weather wise so the little enclosed yard was a sun trap however due to the heat retained during the day we had to leave the windows open over night and as the cottage is on a fork in the road vehicle noise was constant during the 2 nights which kept 2 out of the 3 of us awake for most of the night.
We would also recommend a PIR lamp on the stairs to aid ease of use (very dark)
Location to Hathersage and some good walking trails was brilliant along with a Restaurant only 5 mins walk away.
All in all a reasonable stay just needs a good polish and a bit of attention.

"There were generally cleanliness, housekeeping problems on arrival and the owner kindly offered us a late checkout to compensate."
The property could do with some TLC all round especially in the main living area. The listing does need to be updated to reflect the fact that no complimentary items are included. Having said all of this the location is amazing a short walk into Hathersage where there are lots of independently owned places to eat or buy food to prepare yourself. Loads of things to see and do locally and walks straight from the property.

"Lovely cottage warm and cosy to come back too after a days walking."
Easy access to walks through the wood at the back of the house. The millstone Inn is just a five minute walk down the road, with a friendly welcome and great food.

"Absolutely fabulous, quiet and tranquil, there is a little traffic noise during the day but as soon as dusk falls the noise disappears, everything needed for a bolt hole from the rat race is provided, this being the 2nd time we have stayed over the new year, and we have already booked for new year in 2026 can’t wait to return."

"Really lovely cottage and location."
Highly recommend. Cozy log burner for chilly evenings. Good pub in walking distance. Information needs updating. No logs for first evening even though it said there would be on website. Thanks to Jane who was really helpful when there was a brief water supply issue.

"The house is exactly as described, it is clean, well equipped."
Very comfortable beds, good spacious bathroom, kitchen and living rooms. The location is great with lovely walks from the house and plenty of places to visit nearby. Location is very peaceful and the key holders/owners extremely helpful. I stay in a lot of accommodations and I cannot find fault with this house at all.
I am really looking forward to staying here again.
Over all excellent 10 out 10.

"Loved the cottage."
Great location. Perfect for us and our dogs. The garden, whilst lovely, would not be secure enough for medium sized dogs as I think they could jump the walls but is a great addition to the property. A superb property. Loved the little enclosed courtyard too.

"Whim cottage is beautiful and very quirky."
During the hot weather it was lovely and cool inside. The pub is literally a 5 minute walk away. The wood at the bottom of the garden is perfect for dogs. It is a secure area for them to run free. Overall a great week away.

"A fantastic cottage very clean and comfortable with everything we could possibly need."
We loved the woods at the bottom of the garden it was perfect for walking ours 2 dogs. The only improvement the owners could make would be to dog proof the back garden and then it would have been perfect. The main road was very busy but we couldn't hear any traffic noise inside the house

"A lovely property with quirky features."
The large garden is a bonus, great for smaller dogs - but if you have a medium or large dog you will need to keep an eye on the potential escapees! The log burner is great and there is amazing central heating too. The kitchen is good, but a little tired. The bathroom is capacious and the bath and shower are wonderful. The location is perfect for exploring the Peak District. Local takeaways deliver here (give them a What3Words location) and the local shops in Hathersage have enough to keep you going too.
The beds are comfortable and the living room has plenty of space to relax. Louise, the cleaner, touched based during the week to remind us about bin day - very good idea and a lovely person too. Thank you!

"The cottage was lovely and clean when we arrived."
It was also lovely and warm, starter pack of logs, matches and firelighters, great to be able to light the woodburner straight away as it was very cold weather.
The cottage sits between 2 roads but luckily the traffic is very light/ nothing overnight.
You can hear the traffic closing the wooden shutters at night helps reduce noise.
Unfortunately the boiler makes rather a lot of noise which you hear overnight in the little bedroom ( we turned the thermostat right down so the heating wasn't on but boiler still noisy)
Cottage in great location for walking, only short drive to Edale and Mam Tor great days out walking.
If your a swimmer like me the highlight is the Lido in Hathersage, kept at 23 degrees during the winter, evening swim in the dark with pretty lights around the pool is magical

"While the cottage itself was lovely, situated with nice walks and perfect for two couples, there were some issues."
Firstly, it is not shown accurately on the map on the website, and the cottage name is not listed on google maps which means it is hard to find. We walked from Hathersage and it took 30 minutes.
Secondly, there were no tea bags in the property. As there are no nearby shops, we expected tea bags as a minimum for when you arrive.
Thirdly, there was conflicting information in the booking email and welcome book re: check in times, wood usage and what is provided in the cottage. We were not provided a starting pack for the woodfire - not even kindling.
We are unlikely to be returning to Sykes cottages due to these issues.

"For a dog owner, the cottage is in the perfect location."
It is easy to walk out onto Burbage Moor without crossing a single road, just up the garden and over the stile, through the woodland and you're there. In fact, walking out to the NT Cafe a couple of miles away only requires two road crossings! The garden is quite dog-safe although I daresay a medium sized dog could jump the wall if it put its mind to it.
The cottage is a good size, the bathroom, sitting room and main bedroom are huge. The second bedroom is adequate and the kitchen, whilst compact, was big enough for our requirements. The cottage has a superb heating system and holds the heat well, despite the stone floor. Contrary to the published information, there is a dishwasher in the kitchen.
There is also a washing machine, but it is in an outhouse which, frankly, was disgustingly dirty. We decided against using it!
Our visit was November so we didn't take advantage of the small courtyard where there is a table and chairs but I imagine that would be pleasant although I doubt it gets much sun.
The windows all have secondary glazing so road noise wasn't a problem for us.
There is a pub literally five minutes away which is excellent. Hathersage is about a mile (downhill) which is fine going down...
I'd be happy to stay there again so am also happy to recommend it.

"The property is very comfortable and has everything that you need in the kitchen, however the cooker hood doesn’t work and we thought that having an outside light that could come on as you get up to the house in an evening would be great as we walked into Hathersage in the evenings ."
But having the night lights was a good idea for using the bathroom at night .
