  • "Thoroughly enjoyed our stay, the bottle of Prosecco was a lovely touch, greatly appreciated."

A real home from home, very comfortable and had everything we needed. The outdoor space was a lovely bonus to sit out in. Had a minor problem with the shower door, but did not spoil our trip. Would recommend and stay again.

  • "We had a lovely week in Castleton."

The cottage was very cosy and comfortable. There was everything we needed for a home from home stay. It was nice to have the outside space with facilities to clean our dog off outside after a muddy walk. The car park with a free permit was very close to the cottage. There is space to unload luggage outside the cottage but unless you have a small car it would be difficult to park. We would definitely stay again when we next visit Castleton.

Really lovely place! I’m definitely coming back. Two minor points for improvement; 1) a bigger double bed would be better 2) the shower screen (LHS) door needs maintenance.

I'm not a stranger to Castleton, but it's the first time we have stayed in this cottage. From the moment we opened the door we had smiles on our faces. Would definitely stay again. Loved the cosy feel of the fire at night. Only thing I'm not happy about is that I don't live in this beautiful place. Till next time

  • "The cottage looked nice from the pictures, but the reality was it was basic and tired."

It required a good deep clean and attention to those little things that make a difference. Parking was a nightmare as there is no space outside the cottage. Only the public car parks were available, but being so busy it was a lottery when you found a space. The cottage priced at just under £580 for the week was priced just about right for what the cottage offers. We would not be going back to this cottage.

I was very surprised to receive this feedback as I spoke to Christine twice during her stay at Mill Leat and both times she assured me they were absolutely thrilled with the standard of accommodation. So much so that they wanted to book for a week next August directly with me and not through the agents. I explained that Sykes fully managed our property and therefore we couldn't book with them directly. This was met with a frosty response via text message. Sadly I can only assume that this is the reason for the negative review Many thanks Justine Property Owner

Mill Leat was cosy, comfortable and very well equipped. We arrived early, after a long journey, on a very wet day, we received a message from Justine, the owner, to tell us that the cottage was ready and we could access it early - very welcome news! The parking permit was great and could be used in other Peak District car parks. Castleton is a pretty village and lots of walking routes start here. Definitely a location and cottage for a return visit.

  • "The cottage is lovely and location is excellent."

We were really surprised that given the current situation that the cottage wasn’t very clean. Whilst the bathroom was very clean and linen was changed there were crisps left under the dirty cushions on the sofa and under beds and sofa very dirty. There were old socks left under the bed. Friends who have holidayed in cottages recently have seen enhanced cleaning so I had expected a thorough job. Otherwise everything was as we would expect.

Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback. We are very disappointed that Mill Leat didn’t meet your expectations. We pride ourselves on the comfort and cleanliness we provide to guests visiting our cottage. I was very surprised and disappointed to receive this feedback as on Monday August the 24th after I had sent you a text asking if everything was ok and if I could do anything for you.,I would have hoped if you had any issues with the cottage you would have either called me on arrival or responded to my text raising your concerns. We treat the cleanliness of our property as a priority and I’m baffled at the scenario you have described, I have of course taken this up with the housekeeper. Many thanks. Property Owner

Mostly clean and well equipped. Very comfortable master bed. Missed on suite but size of cottage dictates it has to be downstairs. We got away with unloading and loading with no rain,so lavk of car parking didn't hinder. I'd give it overall 8/10. Minor gripes mostly clean but filthy extractor fan in bathroom, which I cleaned in 2 mins, but rest of bathroom was spotlessly clean. Same with living room but cobwebs on ceiling in otherwise clean room. Cushions covered in dog hairs . Enjoyed our stay

The shower tray didn’t look like it had been cleaned. There was also an empty bottle of soap left in the bathroom. The bin was left with no bin liner and inside the bin was dirty with remnants of food. Reading other people’s views in the comments book it seems we could have been a one off as they were all good apart from noting that the sliding door to the twin room still appeared not to be fixed after comments from 4 months ago. We were kindly left a bottle of bubbly but no milk even though this is stated in the welcome pack. Again maybe this was just a bad week for the ‘housekeeper’ but it wasn’t a great first impression!

I'm so disappointed that you were not 100% happy with your stay at Mill Leat. We pride ourselves on offering a home from home experience and as you say we receive excellent feedback about the standard and cleanliness of our cottage. We are reliant on our visitors to let us know if there are improvements that can be made and had you called me on arrival we would have been able to address and resolve any issues you may have had. However, can be awkward to load/unload vehicle as small space due to residents parking. Bedding in main bedroom unsuitable for summer. Mattress protector was stained and obviously not changed between guests. Both wheelie bins were full to bursting, with extra rubbish bags piled at side. No info on recycling waste, or bin collection?

Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback. We are very disappointed that Mill Leaf didn't live up to your expectation. We pride ourselves on the cleanliness and comfort we provide our guests visiting the cottage. To address the issues you have raised Parking - We are a little village in Derbyshire and parking is premium. We pay over £450 per year to provide our guests with a complimentary parking play t in the Peak park car park, just across the road. As you say there is free parking outside the cottage but because this is taken on a first come first taken basis we dont advertise the cottage to have on site parking. We wash all bed linen and mattress protectors after each visit and have been assured this was the case for your visit, we do provide extra flat sheets that are stored in the wardrobe in the main bedroom should you wish to sleep without the summer quilt. I do apologise that this is is not in the visitors book so will amend this for future guest. So guests are not troubled we take the bins out to be emptied every week and apologise that the bin was full, my understanding is that the housekeeper did take the extra bag you left as soon as she saw it on Wednesday. We rely on guests to inform us during their stay with any queries or problems so we can adress them immediately. I am sorry we were not given the opportunity to resolve any issues you had during your stay. Property Owner

The lack of a designated parking space was a bit of a nuisance, ( though a car park permit is provided). A word of caution for drivers using the village car park - be certain to park correctly. On weekends or Bank Holidays, either leave the car there or only return after 6pm! I parked for 10 minutes to take the dogs out of the car on a hot day, returned to a parking charge of £35. Well equipped with a nice welcome gift of Prosecco and Milk on arrival. Small shared parking area and passes provided not needed by us as we came on the train, but handy for those with cars. Good, safe, enclosed garden, includes a dog bath complete with shampoo which we found useful as our 2 dogs like to roll in sheep poo! Only downside for us was the bed. I have osteoarthritis in my lower spine and need a firm bed, unfortunately this one is quite soft and after a week I have returned home with a lot of backache/agony. This is clearly a personal thing and others may prefer the softer bed. Visitor Centre just across the road staff there very helpful. Lots of good walks from Castleton suitable for all abilities.

Could have been a nice place to stay but, for us, it was very difficult. The cafe was undergoing refurbishment and a skip and van was in front of property this meant that people were squeezing past our window to get past which was really stressing our dog. There was noise from around 8am onwards from this. Then the cottage next to us also started doing some sort of work at a similar time - this was so loud that you would have thought it was upstairs in our cottage. Next, we had pest control at the door telling us the people next door had rats in their house and could we flush the toilet, run the taps etc, etc. Weather was also bad so couldn’t really get out with our dog to get away from the cottage. I realise that these things are beyond the owners control and in other circumstances could have had a nice holiday but sadly we just couldn’t stand it any longer and packed up and went home. Feel like we have just wasted a lot of money! Very disappointed.
