  • "The directions were totally inadequate and it took 50 minutes to find it."

We had to ask several local residents and we eventually found one who knew where it was and who told us she had been asked on more than one occasion. All that needs to be put is ‘You will find the driveway to the right of the Crispin public house’ Why has this not been rectified yet is beyond me. It was a bad start to our holiday. The cottage is lovely but as previously stated in the reviews and guest book, the lounge furniture is not comfortable. The bedrooms were excellent and good quality bedding. We had a wonderful time and the area is great.

The garden is brilliant. Our only feedback is that the leather suite in the living room looks good but isn’t very comfortable. We didn’t use the room much as a result but loved everything else. Great location and next to Crispins pub which is fantastic. We have already booked again for 4 nights in December- really excited to be there at Christmas.

The garden space was lovely, even with it not being fenced off, our dogs loved it and we had no trouble with them roaming off. Perfectly clean Cottage, had all we needed for self catering, well equipped. Very comfortable beds and house throughout. So lovely we have booked it again.

  • "Th description of how to find Holmefield should include mention of access alongside The Crispin pub car park."

A wood-burner starter pack (other than scrunched up paper) was missing. The overall impression is a lovely holiday cottage but on closer inspection it is revealed that the property could do with a deep clean: 1) windows absolutely filthy, 2) garden furniture black with deposits and unable to use, 3) grease filters in cooker hood visibly coated, 4) hob and ovens "sticky", 5) shower sumps and covers coated with residue and filled with hair, 6) venetian blinds sticky with dust, 7) still had dog hair on the indoor entrance mat, 8) the freezer was congested with ice (we left it defrosting). I can send some photos if required We enjoyed our stay due to the area, sights and dog walks. The accommodation was acceptable but with some highlighted issues. On the plus side: beds very comfortable and clean

Booking again for next year. Perfect location for walking. Perfect location for a pint after the walk! Directions and sign to cottage could be better. It really is literally next to the pub...go along the side of the car park and its there! Beds big and comfy. Slept so well! Kitchen large and well equipped. Downside. The living room furniture was very uncomfortable. Sofa too soft as it seems everyone uses it as the wing chairs are awful especially if you are short, I really couldn't sit in there. But the dining room had a comfy sofa and we spent most of our time in there. We didn't go to watch tv anyway but to be out and about.

Great location for exploring the area. Cottage was clean and cosy. Our only issues were: nothing to light a fire with (I know it was May but it was really cold weather!!) and the garden wasn’t dog proof. They could easily take themselves off to the pub if not supervised at all times!!!

  • "We had a lovely 3 night stay at Holmefield."

We were four adults and one dog on a walking weekend. The cottage and the location were just perfect. Great Longstone is a really beautiful village with walks from the door so there isn’t any need to drive anywhere. The cottage is very well equipped with everything you could possibly need. A large range cooker a sizeable fridge freezer and plenty of storage space for groceries. The bedrooms were very comfortable, it was lovely to wake up and look out over the scenery through the large windows. We had a meal in the Crispin pub the night we arrived and popped in each day for refreshments when we returned from our walks. It is a family friendly pub and they are very welcoming. The cottage is a 30 second walk from the crispin but don’t let it’s proximity put you off of the cottage as you wouldn’t know the pub was there, it doesn’t intrude on the tranquillity of the accommodation. Would highly recommend

Own driveway to two parking bays. Large lawned garden, (not enclosed). Period house, large well equipped kitchen, leading through to dinning room then spacious lounge. Large bedrooms with comfy quality beds and bedding. One onsuite, one you use downstairs loo, (vgood shower). No traffic noise, peaceful and quiet. The Queen Anne chairs and chestfield sofa, match the period of the house, but are not as comfortable as stylish. So much on the doorstep, Monsall, Chee Dale, Chatsworth, Thornbridge, Haddon, Bakewell and many more. Would recommend.

  • "Excellent position and good socialising space for a group of 2 married couples."

Super cooking range and an excellent wood burning stove in the lounge. The village is lovely and has excellent access to local walks. It could have been much cleaner though with urine stains on the mattress cover sheet in the second bedroom and awful staining to the pillows especially one. The lounge carpet was covered in four legged friend hair. There is mould on the windows and on the bathroom walls and the shower in the small bedroom rarely got to temperature or pressure so a shower was a challenge! The parking is tight with the space at the entrance very difficult to get into/out of.

Hi Tracey , Thankyou for providing feedback and sorry to hear of the issues you have encountered . I have discussed your findings with the cleaning company who will deal with these and any bedding issues have now been addressed . Should guests have any concerns during their stay , it is often easier to deal with these issues then and there and would always appreciate being contacted directly . Some points we were not very happy about 1. The washing machine had dirty water sitting in the washing machine. 2. Some cutlery was left in the dishwasher. 3. En suite shower was not draining properly so we cleaned out the plug hole which was full of hair, soap. 3. Dead flies on window ledges, multiple rooms. 4. Peanuts and debris under cushion on window seat. 5. Dirty finger marks on doors, looked like newspaper print. 6. Pull up blind on dining room broken it had a coat hanger holding it up. 7. Out side furniture was disgustingly dirty and not usable which spoilt pleasant evenings to sit outside. I do not think this property had a DEEP clean at all.

The only slight quibbles were: The directions to the property were inadequate. Why do they not tell you to take the road which goes up the right hand side of the car park of the Crispin pub? We had to ask several people in the village where the property was. In the bedroom with the en suite there was nowhere to hang the towels. Because the door of the en suite has a glass panel, it would be difficult to put hooks on the door, so I can’t offer a solution to this.

Very comfortable with everything you can need. Couldn't have asked for more from the property, would have been great to visit in the summer. We were away for a 70th birthday and my mother in law loved the property. Only point to improve would be in the directions for finding the cottage. • "We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Holmefield Cottage last week even though Storm Arwen sent challenges."

The cottage is cosy and homely and has a kitchen which is fully equipped - most helpful when you cook in most nights. When we say equipped - It had everything, from the most amazing Rangemaster cooker, a decent freezer (which is almost unheard of in holiday cottages), a microwave, to a garlic crusher and scissors! The beds are super comfy and the showers are great. The only thing we wanted to point out to the owners was that it might be useful if there were a couple of hooks on the backs of the bedroom doors to hang towels (admittedly we didn't notice the airer in the downstairs cupboard until the day we left) but thought this might be handy, and one other thing, we felt the leather sofas in the living room were a bit uncomfortable but shifting our position we made it work. This DID NOT dampen our enjoyment of the cottage however, we just wanted to provide this feedback to the owner. There's a great smart TV in the living room with Netflix and Amazon Prime and a warming log burner too. Funnily enough we didn't use it even though it was sub-degree temperatures outside because the heating in the cottage was so effective. Storm Arwen gave us gales, snow and ice and the owners kindly popped by to shovel away the snow and ice from the drive which made walking down the hill a bit easier and safer. We absolutely love visiting Great Longstone with its picturesque village setting, its great pubs (some of which serve veggie and vegan options) and its lovely walks and trails straight from the door. The Monsal trail is accessible about 1 mile away through some fields and a must for explorers. The cottage's garden is useful for when you have a dog and we would imagine it would be a nice space to use during summer. All in all, Strom Arwen aside - we had a really great break and loved Holmefield Cottage. We recommend this cottage to anyone who wants a relaxing holiday where they can re-charch their batteries in a wonderful Derbyshire village.

  • "The house itself is good and generally clean and comfortable."

Very uncluttered which is great for dogs and for bringing your own stuff. What you are not told is that you are potentially totally overlooked by another house that not only shares your parking area but has a right of way immediately past your outside seating area. Luckily at this time of year we were not outside and the other house was unoccupied. Also, a warning for dog owners, the garden is not at all secure. The entrance gate is off its hinges (and looks as if it has been for many years) and your dogs could run into a pub car park or fairly busy road if you don’t supervise them all the time they are out. There was no “starter pack" for the log burner as promised, the dishwasher still empties into the washing machine as noted by a previous guest and, also previously noted, the frying pan is not fit for purpose. We had to go out and buy our own. There was no fish slice either so getting things out of the frying pan was a challenge. You can generally tell whether the owner has ever stayed in the cottage by the standard of fixtures and fittings and I suspect that they have not in this case so little niggles like extra hooks, bedside tables and the range of cooking utensils all grated a bit. We had to use head torches to read in bed. We appreciated the fact that it was not brimming over with instructions but it might have been worth telling guests that there is a major issue with refuse collection currently. Also, if you do not provide food waste and recycling facilities at the house e.g. food waste caddy and a kitchen bin arrangement that allows you to separate items for recycling we are not going to spend our holidays working it out and that means it all goes in one bin. We did leave it as we found it, with a rather dirty cooker/oven.

    Reviewed by Ian2.8Oct 2021

  • "We met the owner during the week as he came round to put a notice in the property regarding bin collection."

We talked with him for a while to praise the level of fantastic facilities. The rooms were all exceptional and the location right next to The Crispin pub was a real bonus too. This property has to be one of the best we have stayed at if not the best over many years. The people who clean this property have to be given some praise also as the property was immaculate when we arrived on our first day. Will return again for sure.

Also, the area outside where the bins are kept was overflowing with bags of rubbish when we arrived, goodness knows when the rubbish was last taken away. We couldn’t even put it out for the binmen as there were no instructions in the cottage to say which bin collection was due while we were there. We had to resort to finding a local recycling centre to dispose of some of it, we shouldn’t have to do that on holiday.

When I took the quilt cover off the quilt itself on one corner was completely shredded, the hoover was rammed full of dust and my husband had to spend half an hour cleaning it. I feel that this was due to the cleaners and think that the owner who was very pleasant should check the cottage more often.
