  • "The cottage was comfortable and exactly as described."

However I would not book a cottage again through Sykes as they have a condition which does not allow any visitors into the rental properties. I think this is an unreasonable condition and could be very restrictive when on holiday.

Dear Guest From previous bookings that I have had, Sykes have contacted me to ask if it’s ok for friends or relatives to visit. Of course I have always said yes. I am not sure why in this instance it was not possible. I will contact Sykes offices and find out their reasoning, and also explain to them that I am happy for guests to have visitors. I hope apart from this disagreeable point you still enjoyed being off the tourist trail and were able to relax in the beauty around you. I really hope you come back again many thanks for the useful feedback Property Owner

  • "We had a lovely 4 days here, we were so lucky with the weather as this summer has been very hit and miss."

Swallows Barn is easily the best property we have stayed in, in the UK. From the start going up the long private drive, we knew this was going to be a special place. It has everything you could ask for, private back garden with a lovely seating area it is a great suntrap. The front of the property also has a seating area and BBQ (we never used this) with an absolutely fantastic view over the fields. There is so much space outside, I would say ideal for children, and safe. We saw birds of prey, rabbits, cows and of course lots of swallows. Inside was just a wow factor for all of us when we first walked in, we were so taken aback with it, it was clean ,it is very spacious, it has two living areas, one with a piano and two big relaxing comfortable sofa's, the room with the piano in was our favourite room, as it looks out onto the fields. The main bedroom downstairs is gorgeous, the ensuite has a slipper style bath which was well used, very luxurious with some bubble bath :) The kitchen is very well equipped with everything you need. We did however have some builder's turn up during our stay that wanted to start some work and said they needed access through the kitchen to replace a post on a gate, obviously we wasn't too happy, and after a conversation that my husband had with them all was well and they left, but it isn't what you would normally expect when you go away on holiday. We met the cleaning lady (sorry I didn't ask her name) who was lovely and friendly. We had a problem with a steering lock on my car and had to call a locksmith out to the property to 'free' us, the cleaning lady was helpful lending us an extension so we could hoover up the mess. We couldn't get the Bose sound system to work with the tv, I don't know if it was just us or we were doing something wrong, it wasn't too important anyway. Took us a a little while to work the oven out. We walked to the Bulls Head not realising it was closed on a Monday, should have checked the times, so we walked just a little further and had a pint at Lambs Inn instead :) Our break was quite eventful but we still had a wonderful relaxing break :) We can't wait to stay again sometime. Thank you, you have a beautiful place.

Oh my goodness, it was eventful. Thank you for your wonderful feedback. Sorry about your problem with the builder he was instructed by me to fix the gate to bins and make it safe and useable. I am very sorry to have disturbed you, but I believe he was polite and respected your wishes. I am glad Emma could help. The tv does not work with the sound system, sadly. We would love you to return and enjoy the fantastic views down the field. Many thanks Lucy owner Property Owner

  • "Beautiful quiet and tranquil barn conversion, we loved it here."

Felt secluded safe and private but close to all amenities. Clean and fresh on arrival. Fully equipped with everything you could possibly need. Comfy beds and seating, fantastic powerful shower in upstairs bedroom, relaxing roll top bath in the downstairs bedroom, 3 toilets in total . Total relaxation from everyday life with plenty of room and ample storage. Beautiful gardens, totally private with lots of seating, table and sun brollies. Wifi and phone signal brilliant. Superb all round, a credit to the owner. We could gladly live here. The 3 outside doors lock automatically when closing so easy to lock yourself out so make sure you use the provided doorstops or have the key, if not there is a spare key in the key safe so remember the key safe number. Only slight criticism would be there was a brief 5 second loud grinding sound when toilets were flushed or the shower turned on but would still highly recommend this property and plan to return .

ahhhh thank you. It really is a relaxing haven. Emma and her team do there utmost to keep the property fresh, comfortable and full of magic. Yes it is a complicated water system due to the solar tubes on the roof. Thank you for bringing it to our attention. I really hope you come back and visit again, there is so much to do and see in the surrounding area. Many thanks Lucy (owner) Property Owner

Hi, Thank you so much, I read your note you left as well thank you sooo much. . I am so happy that you had a wonderful time. I try with my team to keep Swallows barn at a high standard, but really the surrounding area and the fantastic views down the field, really is perfection. one gets a sense of peace, comfort and freedom. Compliments to the cleaners the place was spotless. We did spend ages looking for the key safe. It’s not obvious that there is the other door (where the key safe is) round the side especially in the dark. It would be really helpful to make this clearer in the instructions. Thanks.

Hi, Thank you for your lovely response and important tip. We would love you to return. It’s such a beautiful area and Swallows Barn is off the beaten track which makes it even more delightful. We liked the house very much. It is very comfortable and well equipped. The grand piano was very much appreciated. Very good location for exploring the beautiful Peak District. One suggestion - please advise the cleaning staff to come at 10:00 on the last day, not 9:00. We felt very rushed and the lady didn't even say hello.

Thank you for your brilliant feedback. As you said It really is a perfect location to explore the Peak District and yet not in the tourist huddle and bussle. I am terribly sorry if you felt rushed. I will inform my property manager and she will pass on this very useful bit of information. • "After a seven hour car journey we arrived."

Although the booking confirmation gave us the access code to the property, we spent fifteen minutes outside searching for the "key safe" and nearly gave up. By this time Sykes office was closed and the overseas contact number for the owner was unobtainable. May I strongly recommend that for those of us who have never rented private accommodation before that the booking confirmation give a simple one-line description of the location of the 'safe' for the weary traveller such as 'Key safe is white box that looks like outside light switch to right of rear door' or whatever. Also, be aware that is is *very easy* as it says in the visitor guide to lock yourself out. Would definitely stay again.

Hello, So sorry for your struggles. Thank you so much for your feedback so important to know difficulties that arise. I will inform Sykes and give a better description of key safe where abouts. I am glad you got in and had a pleasant stay and that you would like to stay again. We would love you to stay again. There is so much to do and see in the peaks. When I stay I tend to end up doing too much, just because I love the Peak District so much , but then end up wishing I spent more time at swallows barn, because it’s so wonderful and tranquil just to be there. The historic market town of Chesterfield acts as the gateway to the Peak District, and has much to offer visitors. The town is famous for its 14th Century church with "Crooked Spire", twisting curiously from its true centre, while the frequent bustling market days are ideal for exploring the many different specialist shops and stalls which line the old Market Hall and charming Shambles beyond. The town also boasts Queens Park, with its lake, walks and summer bandstand, as well as a museum and theatre. Nearby, the Elizabethan Hardwick Hall is still impressive today, with its 6 grand towers elaborately monogramed with Bess of Hardwick’s initials, overlooking the superb gardens and walled courtyards of the grounds. Also popular is the semi-ruined 17th Century mansion of Bolsover Castle, set high on a wooded hilltop, looking west towards the heights of the Peak District. Chesterfield has a host of other attractions within easy reach, such as Chatsworth and Haddon Hall, the amenities of Matlock and Bakewell, or the opera at Buxton. An interesting base for a varied break.
