The Gables

Chris, the owner, had answered all of my queries ahead of our arrival.

She had really thought of everything; from dog tags and dog towels to coffee and tin foil. There was a lovely welcome pack and message too. The property is ideally placed for walking and visiting the castle and the caves - this could easily be a car free holiday if you wish. The village had so many cafes and pubs that you could also opt for a cooking free break too!

We are disappointed at the outcome and the stance which the owner had taken on this matter, having originally accepted that the standards of cleanliness fell far short of what was accepted.

If she had come back to us and said that was her absolute best offer of compensation, we would have accepted that. Whilst Jackie said she understood where we were coming from, I believe Sykes Cottages could have done more to resolve the issue, particularly in view of the historic comments about the cottage which appear not to have been resolved (unless they are a recurrent problem) In your email, you stated that you could not see the images we sent so it seems you do not have the full picture. Moreover, howcan Sykes Cottages continue to give a 5-star rating if they do not visit the property on a regular basis. This is not the outcome we were expecting as you will appreciate, so we are currently considering our next step which will either be the Ombudsman or send the photos to the local press.

Lovely character cottage in a lovely location, handy for visiting places within the Peak District.

A very good welcome pack. With plenty of items within the cottage for the two dogs in our party: treats, dog beds, balls, etc. The beds were very comfortable, and each bedroom has an ensuite. The garden and parking are a definite bonus in Castleton, which is a very busy and delightful village. Good bakery shops within the village and plenty of places to eat out. Most of the main supermarkets offer delivery of groceries if required. We had a delightful two weeks and would definitely recommend a stay in The Gables!

We had a lovely week's stay in the Easter school holiday.

A family of 5 (kids age 11, 13 & 15) so the rooms were perfect and all en-suite - what a treat! We enjoyed the hot tub and games room and relaxing in the evening. The location was perfect for visiting the local caverns and walks in the Peaks. Mam Tor is easily accessible with lots of beautiful scenery and nice pubs to eat in. The kitchen is well-equipped for home-cooking too. We had a lovely welcome basket and each got an Easter egg which was a lovely touch. Great communication with Chris when needed which really wasn't much at all as everything was perfect. Thank you

We had a lovely time at The Gables.

The accommodation was better than we expected, with a welcome notice on the blackboard and a welcome pack on the kitchen table. There was everything you could require, a proper home from home. Nice touches included things for the dog, we didn't really need to bring his bed, blankets or towels, they were all provided for him. Also it was nice that wooded planks had been left in case your dog could get under the wooden double gates, therefore the garden was very safe. Would certainly stay at The Gables again.

The Gables was a great house in the centre of Castleton which had all amenities required .

The beds were really comfortable , the assortment sizes of towels were great and lovely and soft . The small touches were really nice . A message to say the house was ready 1hr before check in , a lovely message from Chris to welcome us. The welcome baskets of goodies were appreciated. We didn’t take any dogs but saw they would be very welcome as well. We didn’t use the games room but if taken children it would have been used . Kitchen was well equipped too. The hot tub was used at the end of day after all the walks we did. The only thing we were surprised at was that the hot tub was round not square as per photos , it may be better if it was turned round so that when the lid was off and up the wind from Winnets pass was on the front and not on the back, as a couple of times the wind blew it down. Also the area around the hot tub could do with a little TLC to look a little more inviting, possibly a wooden cover over the whole area. Besides this we had a great time at the Gables, thank you Chris , would definitely visit again .

The Gables is in an ideal position for numerous walks and sights.

Also, Castleton has a range of lovely eating places. If you wish to cater for yourself, it is slightly difficult as some of the kitchen utensils are wearing out or missing. A set of new saucepans and lids, plus some new baking trays would be welcome. Also, the fridge/freezer is too small for 6 guests. For the money paid, we thought it would be tip top.

The owner, Christine, was really welcoming and helpful, and extra touches made it a memorable stay. We would certainly stay again.

Absolutely gorgeous cottage with an excellent location, right in the middle of Castleton.

Cosy beds and lovely sitting room, and the hot tub was a real highlight for recovering after long walks! Really thoughtful touches, like dog bowls and dog tags to borrow with the holiday address on. Kitchen well equipped and we really appreciated that some essentials had been left for us as we were only having a short stay. Our new favourite place to stay in the Hope Valley, we will certainly be back. Thank you!

There was still evidence of dog hair especially on the kitchen floor.

In the corners etc and our socks generally cleaned it all up as our socks were covered in dog hair. The toilet seats need some maintenance as they were wobbly.

There were plenty of extra little touches that were very welcome , from the welcome basket,dog bits ,fresh flowers and a welcome note , perfect. The games table was a big hit too. There was a hot tub but we didn't get round to using it. Beds were very comfy. Great location with several great pubs within walking distance. Thank you

Another wonderful stay at The Gables.

Highly recommend this property. Great location in the centre of Castleton - shops, pubs & cafes all within walking distance. Fantastic walks from the front door. The boot room is ideal for coming back from muddy walks. The hot tub & games room are also an added bonus. This was our second stay & don’t think it will be our last. Thanks again Chris.

The property was as described in the listing - it was well equipped, clean and reasonably comfortable.

We did some lovely local walks (Hope, Cave Dale) but we confess to driving to Mam Tor. The kitchen was well equipped to cook for a family but there are some great pubs near by if cooking isn't your thing. The family also made good use of the hot tub as well. There are one or two rough edges that surprised me at this pricepoint, e.g. wobbly/loose door handles in the ensuite but these didn't detract from the holiday. The driveway was very narrow and getting an SUV in can be a challenge if you don't like reversing. Road noise was only an issue on the first evening (Fri) and we didn't really notice it again. With the prime location, a bakery and shop on the same street it's a great property and we'd recommend it to others.

It is a really lovely property, it has everything you need for a great holiday. It is set in the middle of the village with pubs and restaurants minutes walk away. There are some lovely walks straight from the door. I look forward to returning to The Gables.

The Gables is a comfortable, home from home in the beautiful town of Castleton.

It's the ideal base for exploring the Peak District, either on foot or via a short drive. The Gables has everything you require for a relaxing week away including a games room, a comfortable lounge, a well appointed kitchen and the best bit was the hot tub to soothe those aching legs after a day in the hills. The location was ideal, the shop is about 5m away, the coffee shop is next to the shop, and the bakery, selling delicious breads, cakes and pastries, is within a stones throw. There are 7 drinking establishments with most selling outstanding food, particularly the Castle who's steak pies are second to none. There are some negatives as there are with all rentals however they're not showstoppers. There is traffic noise but we only really noticed this at night with the windows opened. However, this should be seen as a trade off for being in a central location and not being in the middle of nowhere. The only other negatives were the shelves above the sinks (far too wide) and the poorly fitted toilet seats that slip to one side. Again when compared to the positives such as the wonderful welcome hamper, a jar of dog treats and a jar of sweets, these pale into insignificance. Lastly we did have a maintenance issue whilst we were there but Chris (whilst on holiday in Spain) arranged for Rich to carryout a speedy repair. I would not hesitate to stay here again and would thoroughly recommend The Gables to our family and friends.

Lovely stay at The Gables, has everything you need and Chris was extremely helpful, nothing seemed too much trouble.

. The only disappointment about our stay was the weather as it limited us and couldn’t do all the things we’d planned to do. Would definitely recommend: :)

Lovely property, located on a main road which at times was a little busy.

Had a useful shop next door as well as a coffee shop and bakery that was very enjoyable. Nice walks from the door. Lots of nice pubs to eat out in around the village. Very relaxing stay. Really enjoyed the Peak District.

Delightful cottage From, the moment we walked into the cottage we were overwhelmed how pet friendly it was, even was given id tags for your dog in case it was to get lost, anything you forgot for your dog it was there.

Even if the weather isn’t so great theres plenty of entertainment in the cottage these being, tv, games room, hot tub. Definitely would recommend this cottage to others.

The house is beautiful. Perfect for families and dogs. It had everything we needed and we very much appreciated the welcome basket full of treats! The location couldn't be better. You can walk to several pubs and local shops. It's also close to lovely walks. The garden area and the hot tub were very nice. The owner was friendly and communicative via text. We have had a splendid stay at The Gables which met all the requirements ts for our party of three couples with two dogs.

It is a perfect base for a visit to the Peak District with walks close by and other attractions a short drive away. The Gables itself is ideally situated within the village with restaurants, pubs a very good bakery and small shop right on the doorstep. We received a lovely basket of goodies to welcome us and a message to let us know the cottage was ready, actually earlier than expected. Every detail is catered for, logs for the stove, treats for the dogs, a carafe for overnight. I think this accommodation would be hard to beat.

We stayed for my husband’s 60th birthday as a family of 5.

The cottage is perfectly situated for leaving your car and walking everywhere. The hot tub was well used and the pool table provided lots of evening entertainment. Chris responded very quickly to queries prior to our visit and arranged an earlier check in for the children to add some birthday decorations although Chris had very kindly put up some balloons and proved party poppers- a lovely touch! I would definitely recommend a stay here.

The Gables was such a lovely cottage, very home from home.

It was in a perfect location for plenty of walking. It easily sleeps 6 people without getting under each others toes & we loved the games room, made full use of the pool table. Would highly recommend.

Beautiful property.

Perfect location. Hot tub fantastic. Having the off street parking and outside space was a huge bonus. We had problems with the WiFi when we first arrived but the owner went above and beyond to resolve this within 24 hours.

Lovely cottage with added advantage of having a hot tub to relax in after a day’s walking.

Excellent communication with the owner who contacted us to let us know the cottage was ready earlier than expected and also sent on some games we accidentally left behind.

The house was comfortable, warm and well equipped.

We were very impressed with the full clean half way through our two week holiday including changing the beds and the towels and replenishing the welcome hamper , fresh flowers and topping up the coffee pods and sweet jar. The owner was very helpful and quick to respond to us. There are lots of good places to eat in the village and beautiful walks from the doorstep. The road was very busy but we should have realised that. We had a relaxing time at The Gables and can recommend it for a family holiday.

We stayed at the Gabels for the New Year.

The cottage was still decorated for Christmas which was a nice touch. The kitchen was well equipped, the facilities were great. We played pool although the cues didn’t have tips on them but we compromised. The cottage was spacious with each bedroom having an en-suite however whilst the bathrooms were clean they were mouldy as was the main bedroom which showed signs of damp too. The cottage would also benefit from a deep clean. We would have booked again for next year as The Gabels fitted our needs well however the damp and mould needs attention before we would consider visiting again.

We had an amazing stay at the Gables!

The welcome basket, sweet treats and dog treats were a beautiful touch. There were so many considerate items that catered for everyone’s needs. Especially the dog tags should our little man wander off. The games room provided lots of laughs, and everyone throughly enjoyed their stay. The location was perfect, the walks and views stunning, and the cottage superb! We can’t to return. Christine was a super host, with great communication. Thank you for sharing your cottage.

The Gables was well presented with lots of little touches that made the cottage a lovely place to stay.

Overall the cottage was very clean. The only issue we had was some mould in one of the bedrooms. This has been highlighted to the owner. The kitchen, living room, dining room and showers were excellent with lots of extras and a welcome pack that was much appreciated. The area was lovely, lots of walks and plenty to do and see without travelling too far. We would love to stay at the Gables again and would recommend the Gables to others. Thank you Chris for a lovely cottage making this a memorable stay.

We had an amazing stay at the Gables to celebrate my sisters 30th.

Chris went above and beyond with a beautiful welcome basket and 30th balloon, as well as lots of doggy treats which was really appreciated! The house is really cosy and has everything you need whatever the weather! Amazing hot tub and games room. Thankyou for making it a great stay!

Wow what can I say Chris has thought of absolutely everything in this beautiful cottage.

Dog treats, human treats, welcome basket full of goodies, you name it she has thought of it and more. Lovely garden to sit out in with hot tub & bbq. Games table in the dining room to play pool and table tennis which was great fun. It is in the centre of Castleton so location is fab with abundance of pubs, cafes etc to visit. Highly recommend The Gables to stay in and we look forward to returning.

We were there to celebrate my 40th & along with my husband & the owner Chris they pulled out all the stops & I arrived to some lovely surprises. The house is in a great location, perfect for trying out the cafes & pubs in Castleton. Great walks from the front door, including Cave Dale & Mam Tor. The added bonus of the hot tub & games room made our stay even more special. Highly recommend a stay at The Gables.

The Gables is the perfect place to stay to visit Castleton.

The thoughtful welcome pack and doggy treats from the owners made it feel like a home from home as soon as we arrived. Clean, warm and comfortable the cottage had everything we could possibly need for our family holiday.

Family stayed over Christmas.

From the second we stepped into The Gables, it felt so homely. The facilities are amazing, we wanted for nothing during our stay! All 3 bedrooms were incredibly comfortable and cozy, all with their own en-suites which was a huge bonus. We had much fun in the games room playing pool mostly, this was brilliant as the weather was not on our side! The owners have thought of everything, from little Christmas gifts under the tree for us all including the dog, to all the added extras that you wouldn’t necessarily expect from a holiday rental. We didn’t use the hot tub as it rained pretty much the whole time, the tub is at the bottom of the garden with no cover which would be amazing in the summer but during winter months it felt a little off limits, but this didn’t detract from the amazing stay we had here. Castleton itself is beautiful. The location of the cottage is perfect and lots of walks had with the dog. We will definitely return. Thanks for making our stay so welcoming, we loved it!

The Gables is in a fantastic location and perfect for outdoor holidays.

The cottage was clean, cosy and warm. The beds were comfortable and each bedroom had en suite facilities. The owner catered really well for dog guests, leaving toys and beds and tags in the boot room, which was a great space for walking boots etc. There was even a box of repair essentials for cyclists to use. Off road parking for 2 but we squeezed 3 cars onto the drive with careful manoeuvring. Would have liked some extra serving dishes/salad bowls etc for the kitchen, but that did not detract from a wonderful and relaxing holiday. Thank you.

What an amazing property, in the heart of the village within easy walking distance of pubs and cafes.

Plenty of walks from the doorstep. Attention to detail from the owners was second to none welcome basket, plenty accessories and treats for the dog and even a welcome message. Will definitely be booking again in the new year

Comfortable cottage in a great location.

Facilities really good, comfortable and well maintained (although toilet seat still very loose).

The dishwasher didn’t work and the toilet seat was very loose.

Other than that it was perfect.

The Gables is a lovely comfortable holiday rental in a perfect location.

The welcome pack with milk, crisps, biscuits wine etc was much appreciated. The house was also very dog friendly with bowls, throws and treats. The engraved collar tags for if our doggy should escape was a brilliant idea. Parking on site in Castleton also an added bonus. What can I say about the hot tub other than fantastic, in it every day. The only couple of negatives was that I found hair in the shower trap and the dishwasher filter had bits of food left in it. On the whole we did have great time at The Gables.

We enjoyed our stay and appreciated the facilities especially the on suites to all the bedrooms, my only disappointment which is minor was that there was no toilet downstairs.

I also realise that there is no possibility to put one in. Otherwise we had a wonderful stay.

Very good facilities with extra touches for relaxing, including for the dog. The hot tub was a bonus after a long walk.

Castleton is a great location to explore the delights of the Peak District.

The Gables provided us with a spacious base for our family party of 5 adults a 6 year old and a toddler. The kitchen was very well equipped with plenty of crockery, cutlery, glassware and pans and having a dishwasher and washing machine was perfect. The dining room doubles up as a games room and this was a real hit with the little ones. There were so many games to play there really was something for everyone. The lounge had plenty of comfy seating for us all to spread out and lounge after busy days out. All 3 bedrooms were a good size. The shower rooms were small but functional. Private parking was a bonus, although not the easiest access. The small pretty garden area has a hot tub, bbq and plenty of seating. We loved our stay at the Gables and would definitely return.

We had an excellent holiday at The Gables!

We chose the property because of all of the fantastic facilities - which definitely did not disappoint! We probably spend half of the holiday in the hot tub! Care and attention has went in to the property which is always great to see as this makes it even more cosier! It is in central Castleton, with everything you need on your doorstop! Highly recommended property. Only negative is that in our opinion, some aspects wouldn’t be suitable for the 6 people it can sleep (small fridge/freezer, lack of cookware, small pans).

The Gables is a lovely cottage, it is perfectly located in the middle of Castleton with a secure garden, parking space (we had a VW Transporter and had plenty of room).

The property is beautifully clean, the white goods are all excellent, as is the tv, Freeview, wi-fi and all those things we now seem unable to live without. Chris is ever so helpful if you need her for anything at all (we couldn't fathom the ultra modern tap in the kitchen sink) We'd be very happy to stay there again. If there was any downside (and it wasn't an issue for us) is that the front bedrooms do get some street noise until quite late, especially if you need to open the windows due to lovely hot weather! Not a problem really, just worth noting if you need silence. Can't recommend The Gables highly enough - loved it!!

Property was in a great location and was well appointed.

There were lots of leaflets and information handy. However, the property was not as clean as we would have liked. The radiator in the kitchen was dirty with clumps of dust hanging down from the bottom. The bath had hairs in it and had to be cleaned by us before we used it. The shower head was black and hadn’t been cleaned in a long time. The toilet seat was broken and moved to the right every time we used it. Most annoying was that the lever behind the sink tap in that bathroom was missing so you could not put the plug in to wash as it wouldn’t come out again. These things could easily be fixed making a stay there much more enjoyable. The property was not cheap to rent so it was very disappointing to find this.

Fantastic property very comfortable, we had an amazing time, everything was catered for, and also everything was on the doorstep even the amazing views.

We had a very enjoyable 3 night stay in this lovely cottage which is ideally situated for savouring the delights of Castleton.

Good communication from the owner, Chris. We didn't use the cooking facilities as we out out on 2 evenings and had a takeway on the other, but the kitchen looked well equipped had we wished to do so. Lots of nice touches on arrival: a goodie basket and welcome note on the blackboard. The cottage is nicely furnished and the beds are comfortable. There is some road noise at the front of the house, but this didn't trouble us too much as the exercise and fresh air meant we slept well. All in all a very positive experience.

Only issue we had was with the hot tub but the owner was very responsive and the issue was addressed. All in all we had a lovely holiday and lovely touches and treats for our four legged friend!

The owner has gone out of the way to make our stay perfect .

She has thought of everything reqd to make it a lovely cottage stay What a great location its set, in the heart of the village. Beautiful countryside with mam tor dominating . Walks galore . Caverns to explore ( we did the speedwell cavern boat ) . The owner has supplied books that give & provide guides to the area. Pubs ! Well if your staying for a week you might get to visit all. The italian restaurant a must . Bakery nearby for walking fuel. Post office next door but 1 has alot of general supplies . Cafe opposite the tourist info junction is not to be missed Mm think we thought it was good eh

Cottage nice and warm with comfortable beds and soft furnishings. Great to have all on suites. Owner contact was very good.

The Gables was a great place as a base for our holiday.

After days out in the unpredictable winter weather, the cottage welcomed us back with warmth and comfort. Chris, the owner, has literally thought of everything and the welcome treats were a lovely touch. We really enjoyed our stay and hope to return again in the future.

Fantastic Week!

January 2022 Thanks to Chris for letting us stay in her beautiful and perfectly located cottage in Castleton, which was the perfect base for walks, pubs and restaurants. We had a wonderful week with stunning weather on many days. Highlights were; The Roaches (very slippery!), Thors Cave, and Mam Tor (very windy!) Recommendations are; Curry Kabin in Hope (we walked to and from at 25 mins each way), takeaway pizzas from the George, Watson's Farm Shop for sausages, and our personal favourite was 1530 (Italian) but booking is a must. Thanks once again to Chris (it was lovely speaking to you too!) We will definitely return! Emma Coward and family

An excellent, well positioned and comfortable property.

The high standard and attention to detail of everything made for an exceptional break.

We were at The Gables for Christmas & was truly amazing .

Felt so welcomed with presents under the tree felt so Christmassy all round . Cooked a Christmas Lunch with no problems at all, plenty of cookware & utensils to use. Loved the boot room it was perfect to dump muddy boots & clean dogs down too especially as weather wasn’t good to us was very wet but still got out for the fabulous walks . Managed to use the hot tub on Christmas Day which was a great plus for our son to chill out, then to use the games table later on made the boys happy ! Loved that each bedroom had an en-suite with plenty of clean towels to use too! The cottage is right in the centre Castleton (plenty of bars & resturants to choose from) which was another plus, would love to return in the Summer

We couldn’t have wished for anything more for our stay at The Gables.

The cottage was perfect and there was so much attention to detail. We arrived to beautiful Christmas decorations and a wonderful Christmas Tree! Chris has been amazing and so helpful, we would love to return very soon! Highly recommend.

The Gables without doubt is the best holiday cottage I have ever had the pleasure to stay in.

The owners really have thought of everything and the attention to detail is second to none. The location is fantastic and is situated in the centre of this beautiful village with at least 6 pubs/restaurants within a two minute walk. The Cottage although traditional is very contemporary in design and extremely spacious The additional logs available to purchase are great value and even include a large bag of fluffy Marshmallows and toasting skewers ( Another example of attention to detail) I would highly recommend this stunning cottage and I’m already looking at dates to visit again. Thank you Chris for allowing my family to stay in your beautiful Cottage. We made some great memories and had a fabulous time.

Fabulous cottage in a wonderful location.

Well equipped kitchen and great facilities throughout. Everything you could have wanted was there and more. Lovely to have an en suite for each bedroom. Great attention to detail and very well presented. Excellent communication from owner. Good choice of books and DVDs, pool/table tennis table-to keep the family entertained. Didn’t even miss the WiFi. Secure garden for the dog, boards to fill in gap at bottom of gate, loved the little dog tag is case he got lost. Son said the hot tub was great.

We were a group of 6 and absolutely loved our stay. The hot tub, Games room, fire and spacious layout was perfect for us. We just needed to YouTube how to use the hot tub as we couldn’t work it out. There were lots of little touches that greeted us on arrival which made us feel welcome. We didn’t have pets but it looks welcoming for anyone bringing animals with the supplies provided. There was no Wi-Fi but that didn’t bother us. The owner was so helpful with any questions or concerns. The cottage is the perfect base to explore the Peak District. It is also suitable for guests who don’t have access to a car due to the amount of walks, caverns, restaurants & pubs on the doorstep and bus/train links either from Castleton/ Hope. We couldn’t fault this house or location and would love the excuse to go back.

Lovely property in the centre of Castleton.

The property does need some larger pans in the kitchen as there are not enough to cook a meal for six adults. The summary says that fuel and power are included in the rent but you Don’t get enough fuel to use in the wood burner and then they ask you to pay £5,00 for a small bag of logs. The WiFi was none existent and cannot get Netflix etc so shouldn’t advertise it if it is not working. The central heating was very random and comes on at very strange times and not in all rooms. They need to leave instruction on how to use the hot tub as we couldn’t use it for two days because it wasn’t hot enough. Had to phone the owner to get instructions, a floor mop would be useful. Bedrooms and on-suites a lovely and on the whole it is a lovely place to stay .

A very comfortable cottage, really warm and cosy, especially with the wood burner.

All beds very comfortable . Everything you need for a great stay and a nice welcome message and essential pack, along with some real treats for the guests and pets. We would recommend this cottage for it's comfort and excellent location.

Great holiday home absolutely beautiful location.

The WiFi didn’t work at all when we were there so we had to order a portable WiFi box to use as we needed to do some work but other than that the cottage was clean, dog friendly and very cosy! I would highly recommend this cottage!

We loved the cottage.

Very good location in the centre of the village. Comfortable bedrooms with a shower each. It was lovely to have the wood burner as the nights were cool. We did not use the Hot Tub nor the table tennis but it was nice to have the option . We were there to walk and it was great having a boot room . No complaints.

Great House! Wonderful rest and walks. Great also for our dog Willow, he had a great time.

Outstanding.

The cottage looked lovely, and, unusually was even more lovely in reality. Really comfy beds, beautiful interiors and the kitchen was extremely well equipped. The hot tub was really appreciated by the long distance walkers and having an actual bath, (Jacuzzi!!!) was appreciated by everyone else. Excellent location for easy access to peaks, caverns, castle, cafes, restaurants, bus route and train. a marvellous, luxurious intro to the peak district.

A fantastic cottage, beautifully fitted out and in the middle of a very pretty village in the Peak District.

Loads to do nearby, nice restaurants and pubs but always lovely to have a night at home in this great property.

The cottage is almost perfect.

The pictures here don't quite do it justice. The wifi wasn't really working while we were there but that actually made it a more relaxing week as I couldn't really do any work while I was away. The location is perfect and it was by pure chance that we picked this property as we didn't really know the area. Chris was on hand by email whenever there was anything we needed to know and was very helpful. We will definitely stay here again.
