8 Tawney House

We have stayed in this property many times over the years.

Unfortunately, it is now showing signs of neglect, needing a major refurbishment programme and new furniture. Also,3 things have always been a problem, i.e. the fridge door won't shut properly, the shower is feeble, and the lighting in the lounge is inadequate. A new problem is the freezer - it is so badly in need of defrosting that one of the drawers is frozen shut, and another drawer will be in the same state soon. We still love the location and the view of the church, but probably won't come here again.

The accommodation is lovely, extremely spacious and a great location.

I had a couple of issues when I couldn’t park my car because it was full. But no real drama.

Location great, light and airy.

Lots is dust behind bed on skirting boards and cobwebs. Dining chairs need replacing, reclining chair was dirty on base. Shower head not stable and bathroom needs a good clean and regrouping.

We had a very pleasurable stay in Matlock and would definitely visit again.

Really spacious, nice views, and in a good location, with parking.

Pleasant walks into Matlock, or for catching buses to neighbouring towns/attractions. Perfect wifi. Good heating. ‘Routine’ cleaning ok, but needs a blitz in some areas. Lovely leaded windows, but glass (inside) needs cleaning, and cobwebs need hoovering. As does food debris under sofa cushions. Hidden areas behind toilet and bed too. We left a list of simple things which we thought would change property from good to very good. For instance, remove obsolete appliance guides (TV instructions still describe non-existent Sky), a suction-cup shampoo holder needed in shower, etc. We would come again, if these relatively simple things …. some of which others have reported in visitor book … were attended to.

The apartment in Tawney House was well situated, close to Matlock town centre with its wealth of shops and beautiful park.

Visitors need to be aware that it is up quite a number of steps, but once inside, it is a lovely place to stay. It is clean, fresh and bright throughout. The living area and bedroom are very comfortable and the kitchen area is well equipped. We stayed for a long weekend and there was more than enough to do within a very short distance - historical attractions, theme park, stately homes and gardens, interesting towns such as Bakewell, Belper and Buxton, as well as 3 preserved railways. We would definitely look to rebook the apartment if we decide on a return visit to the area.

Lovely warm and comfortable apartment with parking and the added bonus is bus stops right outside apartment, also pub, fish and chip shop and local shop across the road.

We had a fantastic stay.

The apartment was huge and airy, and very well equipped. It had everything we needed and was very clean and comfortable. Karen was very responsive and kindly let us arrive a bit early. Parking was no problem and it was a great location to walk into the town centre, or to go to the shops. We enjoyed the local escape room, and used the recommendations from the info book in the flat. We had a brilliant time - thank you very much!

Great accommodation located in a central location in Matlock.

Warm and very comfortable. This is the second time we have stayed at Tawney House, the first time 9 years ago!! Would certainly stay again, maybe not leave it for another 9 years!

Property in an ideal location - loved how central it was!

Furniture/paintwork was looking a bit tired and could do with a spruce up. The blind was missing from the window in the living room and dining room chairs peeling and looking old and some of the paint on the walls chipped. There also really needs to be black out blinds or curtains in bedrooms as the pattern on the curtains means that light pours through even at night - not ideal if you like a dark room. We still gave our stay 4 stars though as we had a lovely break.

It was a beautiful spacious comfortable apartment that was very well equiped.

Great locatiion for busses trains and town centre and a great pub across the road, We even caught a bus to the East Midlands Designer outlet right outside.

Fantastic property, close to town and the park.

Really clean and stocked with everything you need (except a hairdryer). A handy corner shop and chip shop over the road. Really enjoyed our stay, we will definitely be back.

Excellent accommodation and plenty of room in which to relax.

Good views across to the church. Everything within walking distance. Directions to get into the courtyard appeared to be out of date. Reference was made to a bridal gown shop which appears to have shut down. We had to park the car in the supermarket car park and find the location on foot. The actual entrance was down the side of Kwik-Fit and opposite a bus shelter. I would suggest that this be used as a more accurate location finder.

Many good points: Off-road parking; Excellent shower; Light, pleasant main living space; Decent wifi; Lovely church, cemetery, war memorial nearby with great, elevated views; Derwent Valley full of interest, high and low.

I especially recommend Scarthins bookshop and caff in Cromford. Also the guided birdsong walk from Monyash...much more than birdsong.

Lovely walk through the park into Matlock, plus buses available if you didn’t want to use car to Bakewell, Buxton, Derby and Chesterfield to name a few.

The property, as always, was superb.

The owners are exceptionally kind and respond immediately to any concerns. I rated Sykes itself a little lower simply because temporary overseas tenants, like myself, are not able to buy insurance from you against breakages, damage and the like.Sincerely, Maurice Taylor, Japan.

Last minute booking due to being let down on the day for our stay helped us with a very stressful situation.

Was ideal location was perfect lovely and warm had everything we needed.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the apartment.

One tiny criticism......the shower drain seemed slow. Other than that, should we decide to visit the Dale's again we would definitely stay there.

The property frontage was on a main road but triple glazed so noise didn't bother us.

The apartment was lovely and more spacious than we expected. It was about 5 minutes walk to the centre of town for shops and restaurants.

Really well equipped flat with everything we needed for our stay.

Very kind of the owners to leave milk and biscuits for us. Dishwasher and washing machine in the flat was very welcome. Can’t really comment on the location as we were using it as a base while we visited friends so we weren’t doing the typical ‘tourist’ thing! Generally, presentation and cleanliness was good but there were some fairly large cobwebs hanging down in the bedroom (tall ceilings so understandable), thick dust on the skirting board behind the bed/mirror in the smaller bedroom. The main thing that let it down was the state of the shower. The cubicle was riddled with mould and the seals were green with mould/algae. These are really simple and cheap to replace so I can’t understand why it hasn’t been done. Would also have been nice to have some information somewhere about where rubbish needed to go and facilities for recycling. We ended up leaving the bag of rubbish in the flat which I felt bad about as we didn’t know where it went. We also took a bag of recycling back home to Weston super Mare with us! Having said all of that, overall, it was still a pleasant stay and we would return if visiting friends again.

Cobwebs on ceiling need to be got rid off and a bigger TV as hard to see from sofa

A lovely spacious and light apartment ideally situated for town and restaurants.

Bus stop outside for easy access to Matlock Bath. Our only problem was the traffic but that's not the property's fault. Matlock had endless road works and road closures.

Loved the apartment, clean and really comfortable, lots of space, much more spacious in person than the pictures make out.

Very quiet even though on a main road, very close to a beautiful park. Easy 2 min walk into the centre of Matlock. A hairdryer would be useful but location and parking etc was all brilliant. I have already recommended your apartment to a friend. Many thanks

Ideal position within walking distance to Matlock town centre and a lovely walk over high tor to Matlock bath.

Spacious flat, good location close to town.

The flat is well equipped except for a hair dryer which is an unusual and frustrating omission. Key collection is by key box but the door lock is very stiff.

The property was spacious & comfortable with everything you need.

It is well situated just outside of town only a short walk threw the beautiful park which has a lovely little cafe which is well worth a visit. The property is well situated for the attractions. The Heights of Abraham is only a 25min walk. We would highly recommend. We will be back very soon.

Perfect base for family holiday in Matlock, visiting Peak District, Derbyshire Dales etc The accommodation was excellent.

Traffic noise was a bit loud and the heating system seemed to be erratic.

We loved our little stay here, apartment is lovely, homely and cosy and has plenty of room.

Perfectly located for the pub and shop across the road and a short 10 minute walk into the town. Lovely views from each window, church, castle etc. Host was friendly, communicative and quick to respond. We will definitely stay here again.

Superb apartment.

We stayed in September 2022 and enjoyed so much we returned in December 2022! Matlock is a wonderful base for local walks - we never once used the car. This apartment was amazingly cosy. We stayed during the coldest week of the year!!. (I guess all rental prices nationally will have to increase to reflect the horrendous increase in UK energy prices). This apartment (with free parking!!) is one of the best I've ever stayed in. Thank you Highly recommended.

It was close to all amenities. The owners were on hand if we needed anything which we appreciated. All in all a great place to stay!

Very lovely and comfortable apartment in an excellent location. I would highly recommend and would definitely hope to stay again if we return to the area. Parking was (as always) a great bonus. We did not use the car at all. We walked or used public transport which was very good (if not always on time). Word of caution - don't make assumptions! I assumed there would be a hair dryer. There wasn't. Bring your own if you need one. I was fortunate to find one in a local charity shop for £3.

Off street parking is always a bonus. Friendly owner with great communication. Really have nothing negative to say about our stay.

We have been to this property many times, and before this trip we had already booked to go again next year.

We noticed this time that the cleanliness was not quite up to scratch - a dark line of dust on one of the windowsills, stuck-on food on the microwave's turntable plate and mould in the shower. The fridge and freezer don't shut properly. The kitchen and bathroom both need to be refurbished. However, we still love the property.

A bit disappointing.

Spacious apartment but looking a bit tired. Kitchen area could have been cleaner. Chipped crockery. Beds uncomfortable. No storage space in small bedroom to hang clothes as tall boy filled with owner's spare linen etc. Wardrobe drawers in main bedroom kept falling off runners. Very noisy with traffic as on a main road. Positive points were the parking, being so close to shops and amenities, lovely walks through the town, well converted old building, good base for days out.

Beautiful relaxing apartment, didn't want to leave, lovely views in a ideal location, Matlock a very inviting town with plenty of little shops, cafe and bars to explore.

It's a very nice apartment with all the facilities you would expect.

It's located within an easy walk of the town centre which has several supermarkets, cafes and restaurants. I had to unblock the shower drain one day and it took me a while to find the communual bin store but apart from that everything was fine.

Tawney House is in a superb location, apartment had everything we could wish for, including coffee, tea, milk and biscuits on arrival!

Apartment was very airy and comfortable but would have liked some guidance on rubbish disposal and recycling- ended up bringing newspapers and bottles back with us to recycle at home.

Really went against the grain having to leave food waste, cans and plastic in kitchen bin all week. Lovely location and convenient parking.

Another wonderful stay at Tawney House.

We love this apartment. Always spotless, well equipped, warm & cosy. Never a problem parking & a short stroll into town through the park. Matlock is a great place to stay. Everything you need from M&S Food to local butchers & bakers. We caught the train to Nottingham for the day & enjoyed short drives to Bakewell and Ashbourne. Thank you. We can't wait to come back!

Excellent apartment.

A welcome pack was there on arrival and the heating was on!

The location of the flat was just superb - within walking distance of buses and trains.

We all loved Matlock and would stay in this flat again. The Flat was in walking distance of such a lovely park and a church as well. There is just so much to do in the area, so much history on the doorstep, one visit is not going to be enough. Highlights were The Heights of Abraham, Poole Cavern, the Ghost Tour in The Galleries of Justice and the Peak Bookshop and Cafe. The young men who showed us around the caverns had such a fab sense of humour Our son did Peak Rail and he loved it

This is our third stay.

As we don't drive we get here by train from Bridgwater. A very easy journey. We get about by bus -- fabulous views. When we were there BT WiFI was installed in the flat. Even better! The mini-market opposite had all our everyday needs. There was a very good Sainsburys and other shops in reach. And the bus stops outside. The flat is perfect for 2 elderly active pensioners. Highly recommended

We really enjoyed our time in Matlock and were very happy with the accommodation.

Everything was provided and showed that the owners had thought about their guests. Our only hesitation in giving full marks is to do with us. As a couple we sleep in separate bedrooms and found the second bed creaked as you turned. Not really for adults. The accommodation is very central and some traffic noise at night. But we would return. Thank you so much.

This was a wonderful apartment in a wonderful locality.

It was clean well, equipped and spacious and close to all required amenities. The one draw back that I discovered was the fact that the lounge furniture was all leatherette covered and since the weather was very warm it soon became too hot and sticky to sit in the sofa unit for any length of time.

Well equipped, though shame there was no WiFi and I think this will be sorted. Friendly owner, key collection was easy. Nice to have milk, teabags and chocolate biscuits waiting for us!

It was fairly spacious, clean, attractive, and had most amenities temporary living. The location was convenient to the town and getting around Derbyshire. The availability of secure parking was also valuable. Would have liked an internet connection, that would have topped it off.

The apartment was spacious and had everything we needed, even milk and biscuits!

We came prepared as we were staying for four days but we could have left most of it at home because we were well catered for. The location was even better than we had expected with a local play park and a good pub. You won’t be disappointed if you are booking this for two adults and two children. I am only saying that as the second bedroom has a pull out twin bed not a double.

The apartment was extremely well appointed, very comfortable and had pleasant views.

It was well located for Matlock's shops, its fine park, buses and train station.

Lovely central place to stay but would be better with WiFi access especially when here from overseas and don't have good phone reception

In this day and age wifi is expected especially for international travellers like ourselves.

Unfortunately not in this case. The iron was a disgrace and I useable and there was no lock on the bathroom door. Hopefully these issues will be addressed

This was our second visit to Tawney House.

The apartment is warm, cosy & very well equipped. No problems parking (small residents car park). Very helpful owners. The walk into Matlock is lovely - takes about 5 minutes, walking through the park. Plenty of places to visit - a day trip to Nottingham by train was much enjoyed. We will happily return.

This apartment was as described and as the pictures showed.

We were really pleased with the easy access to the town centre which was a pleasant walk through the park. The parking available could sometimes be a little awkward but there was always a space. The key collection was very easy. The only thing that let this property down were a few minor details that we have now come to expect with a self catering holiday and which have always previously been provided such as oven gloves, washing up liquid and sponge, hairdryer, toilet cleaner and more that one toilet roll! We still had a great holiday in the apartment and particularly enjoyed the large sunny kitchen/living room and character of the property.
