Great location for walks in the park and access to the town. We had an issue with the boiler, the response from both Sykes Cottages and the owner was excellent in resolving the issue and communication. Lots of equipment supplied e.g., towels and linen which is rare for self catering holidays.

  • "The exterior is is an old property but would benefit from an update i."

    E. window frames need cleaning & painting & the hallway smells of damp. The apartment itself is nice but of the windows that had a note on saying "this window opens".. don't! This was a problem as cleaning fluid stored in a cupboard in the living room as soon as you walk in, had leaked & the smell was overpowering. As I'm asthmatic, we had to ring Sykes straightaway to find another property as I couldn't stay there due to the smell. We explained the reasons but weren't able to get even a partial refund even though I had explained about my asthma triggers on booking.

Thank you for leaving feedback and it is great that you found the apartment nice. You are absolutely correct that the property is and appears old - it is in fact around 180 years old and has many original features, which is the attraction to many people and why you will see so many positive reviews here for Church View. You are the only one of many guests to comment that the hallway smells damp so unsure why that was during your stay. Rest assured the windows do open and are frequently opened to air the property, including often during cleaning. Again, they are original sash windows from the Georgian era and, although serviced, may not open quite as smoothly as modern windows you may be used to. It appears there may have been an unfortunate incident involving a cleaning fluid spillage, which it is understood to have long been dealt with without incident, but the majority of the other points you mention are outside the control of the general running of the apartment and should not detract from the character, beauty and great location of the apartment itself. It seems rather unfair to mention a dispute with Sykes around a potential refund as part of the feedback for this individual property. Property Owner

The apartment is beautifully decorated in the late Georgian / early Victorian style and lavishly furnished accordingly. If you love Buxton or it's your first visit you will love the apartment because the Pavilion Gardens are a mere 5 minutes walk away and the Opera House within an easy stroll. • "Church View is a lovely property and perfectly equipped for visiting Buxton; it's an easy walk into the centre, and a short drive onto the peaks for walks."

The cottage is comfortable and tastefully decorated, in-keeping with the period of the building. It is also well-equipped; some reviewers before us had commented on the faulty dishwasher, but we were thrilled to find it worked perfectly. We went over New Year, and the only slight disappointment was that the apartment wasn't decorated for Christmas, which would have made it even lovelier. Only slight niggle was that we moved some of the living room furniture around so the sofa was nearer the TV, and found on moving the sofa and rug that it evidently hadn't been hoovered under for quite a while, because there was quite a lot of debris under there... we'd have happily cleaned, but there was no access to a hoover or other cleaning products. Would recommend though - lovely area and accommodation.

Thank you for taking the time to leave such positive feedback about Church View. We take feedback very seriously and had already installed a brand-new dishwasher responding to previous feedback, you would’ve been the first to use it in fact. We do pride ourselves on how clean the apartment is made for guests - this includes an even deeper clean periodically where furniture is moved, but had not accounted for you moving the sofa / rug around on this occasion. In any case we hope to welcome you back to church for you again soon and glad you enjoyed your stay! Property Owner

  • "Church View is a rather grand looking apartment in an ideal location for exploring Buxton."

However, for us, a number of things really let it down. The kitchen was poorly equipped with only 2 saucepans, only one of which had a lid. The dishwasher door only partly opened, making it very difficult to load and unload. This had been mentioned by previous guests. There were leftover chips in the oven, and we had to fix the kettle before using it. The plastic liner from inside the lid plus the small screw, which holds it in place were in the bottom of it. There was 1 tea towel which also had to serve as an oven glove as there wasn't one which isn't ideal. The fridge although clean had a strong perfumy smell so we had to clean it again to try and iradicate the smell as it was tainting our food. As there isn't wardrobe we really think some hooks and a few coat hangers would be a good idea. The towels were good quality, but although there were 2 bath towels there was only 1 hand towel between the two of us. There were quite a few cobwebs some of which had obviously been there for some time, especially on the bedroom windows. We received a welcome pack of wine, milk, cakes, plus a few teabags and sachets of coffee, which was a nice touch.

Staying in November the central heating was frequently on and is efficient keeping the whole apartment warm. The location is excellent - through a gate at the back of the house and you are in a park - a short walk through the park and you are at the main entrance of the Pavillion.

  • "Fantastic location and very attractive property."

Was pretty cold when we went in, and I was slightly allergic to something in the bedding. That improved with airing the bedroom well. Would have liked a third saucepan, especially one with a lid. Otherwise, was well equipped and very comfortable. Close to everything in Buxton. Easy access to great walking and cycling.

Thank you for taking time to leave feedback and so glad you found the apartment attractive and the location fantastic! The temperature normally runs on a program which keeps the apartment at a comfortable temperature but guests are most welcome (within reason!) to set the temperature however they wish. Sorry to learn of your allergy, this is not something we have come across before but we do ensure the bedding is always very clean and also completely replace the whole set for new periodically. • "This is a very palatial apartment on the ground floor and was very comfortable and convenient, especially if you have a slight disability."

It is very close to the town centre and the Pavilion is just a 2 minutes away out the back gate and across the church yard. We would definitely go there again. There was plenty of good quality glasses, crockery and cutlery for 2 people but there was only basic cooking equipment which is ok if you want to eat out all the time. A few more pots and baking trays for example would be useful. Plenty of hanging space for coats etc but no wardrobe. There was also limited cleaning equipment and no vacuum or long handled broom or mop. A rack in the shower would also help especially if you have difficulty bending down in a smallish cubicle. The towels however were probable the best we have ever had even in a 5 star hotel. But to be fair this is an amazing place and we thoroughly enjoyed our visit. Disappointingly there were a number of problems - but there was a quick response after a call to Sykes Cottages. The shower was extremely dirty and blocked but the “A Team” came out the same day we complained leaving it spotless and complementary wine and cake, and apologised profusely. The dishwasher had a broken door although usable and the freezer was frozen solid and although the cleaners tried to defrost it, left it broken and still rather unusable. I am sure these problems will be resolved by now.

  • "We stayed at the property for 5 nights 29 Sept - 4 Oct."

The property is well located and only an 8 minute walk down to the Opera House and town. It is nicely furnished and comfortable. The dishwasher door only opened half way which made use difficult. This was reported on 30th September and we were told the owner was waiting for a gap between bookings to get it repaired or replaced. I'd suggest more lamps in the living room as its not cosy to sit under main ceiling light. I accidentally left clothing behind and reported this on 5th October, the day after we left. I contacted Sykes again on the 10th and was told the owner was waiting for an answer from the cleaning company. I contacted Sykes again on 23rd Oct and the next day was told the cleaners had not found anything. I am certain clothing was left in the bedside drawer. I'm disappointed that I had to chase this query over 2.5 weeks and to have received this answer.

Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback and it’s great that you found the apartment well furnished and comfortable. The light in the living room is completely dimmable, so you may have it as bright as dim as you wish. There is also a side lamp to use instead or in addition. It is does feel a little unfair to leave negative feedback claiming to have left clothes in a drawer; we arranged for the cleaners to make a special trip to check for you but they confirmed there was nothing there. For location as well as the property itself. A beautiful Georgian building in a peaceful residential area. The apartment is beautiful throughout. The attention to detail is 100% with regard to the sympathetic decor including colour schemes, the finish of the decoration and the finishing touches; paintings, wallpapers, chandeliers. Totally lovely. The bed was so comfortable. The kitchen had everything required (and more). Plenty of information provided about the property (down to the location of sockets!) and an abundance of local attraction information. The property itself is exquisite, with sturdy furniture of very high quality. The decorations and furnishings are clearly thought through and appear to speak for the history of the place, we particularly loved the faux grille on the bedroom radiator. It was fun visiting attractions around town and coming back to see paintings of the same. There is evident effort put into upkeep and one could easily mistake it for a set from a film. The heating was efficient and convenient to control through a central panel. The owner was prompt and proactive in arranging a midstay cleaning service when requested. We had an absolutely splendid fortnight at this place and it is one of the more impressive cottages we have stayed in. Would highly recommend to anyone visiting Buxton.

As it wasn't the warmest of weekends and we had two wet days, to give an illusion of added warmth please place a mural of a blazing open fire on the plainly painted old fireplace cover. That would have created the perfect backdrop to a wet day spent watching Her Majesty, the Queen's funeral on the more than adequate television. Thank you.

About the location

BUXTON

Tideswell 7 miles; Bakewell 12 miles; Matlock 21 miles.

It was the constant 28 degrees centigrade of the bubbling blue waters of Buxton's eight thermal springs that originally attracted the Romans to the town. However it was during the 18th and 19th centuries, under the patronage of successive Dukes of Devonshire, that the Palladian splendour of the Buxton of today was designed and built - including the magnificent semi-circular Crescent, The Great Stable, Hall Bank, The Square, The Pavilion Gardens and The Opera House. Today visitors continue to enjoy these magnificent buildings and gardens, as well as the Opera House's full programme and annual festivals of music and arts. There is good walking close by with rugged peaks to the north and gentle hills and dales to the south and a number of pretty towns and villages are dotted throughout including Bakewell, Ashford-in-the-Water, Castleton and Edale. The stunning properties of Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall are within easy driving distance and must be seen while visiting this area. A great base for exploring the Peak District.
