Woodpeckers Cottage

Location of the cottage was perfect for access to the hills and to the town.

The property is well appointed with everything you need for a break.

It's in a perfect position to enjoy the wonderful countryside and a 5 minute stroll into Church Stratton centre. The hosts were lovely and friendly and couldn't be more hospitable. I'd recommend to anyone and will definitely return.

Great location, the reason we book this cottage, however it requires an update.

Shower cubicle needs a good clean , the shower wasn’t working efficiently and effectively however the owner was in and out of the property couple days a week to repair it. The WiFi completely does not connect on any level. Therefore it is best to say that there is no WiFi . Overall a little disappointed but as the weather was ok we were able to hike.

Woodpecker Cottage is in a lovely woodland setting and only a short walk from the town in one direction and Rectory Gardens in the other direction.

Ideal for two. Has everything you need for your stay, including a proper kitchen and a good shower room.. Lovely view from the sitting area. Very helpful owners - they even took us to the station when we left! We have stayed here several times and always enjoyed it. Easy to walk to the shops. Excellent Coop. Several nice cafes, restaurants and pubs in walking distance too. For those without transport there is a six day a week bus to Shrewsbury or Ludlow, so great for exploring the area. The only downside is the access drive which is fine on a bright, sunny day but not such fun on a wet windy evening in November! But then, where is?! I suspect we will return!

The property was slightly smaller than we expected but was not a significant problem.

The bed mattress was much harder than we are used to and was rather uncomfortable. Otherwise everything was excellent and the location was ideal. We loved Church Stretton.

Great to be able to do so many walks from the door and nip into the town for shopping and eating. The only thing I struggled with was the lack of a sharp knife when cooking but this was a very minor thing. I'd happily recommend it as a great place to stay and would like to return

An absolutely beautiful cottage in rural surroundings, very comfortable and with all amenities.

It is a few minutes walk from the Long Mynd and the town, which boasts several good pubs, teashops and supermarkets. Ed and Debbie are a joy to meet and live nearby should advice be needed. A truly wonderful holiday and we look forward to returning.

Our second stay at Woodpeckers Cottage and it was just as enjoyable as before.

It is ideally positioned for walking the hills without using the car and touring the whole area. The owners are friendly and welcoming and the cottage is compact but warm and cosy. We would certainly return if visiting Shropshire.

We thoroughly enjoyed the week.

Because of some previous health issues we wanted a relaxing week with no pressure. The owners were very accommodating and would definitely recommend Woodpeckers Cottage. Hopefully we will return as it is a beautiful area and and lovely cottage.

Delightful well-equipped and cosy cottage.

Fantastic location and great hosts. Even the woodpeckers (great spotted) made an appearance and it was lovely to see them feeding their chick on the lawn just a few yards away. In the grounds of the grand old rectory, this place is the gateway to the Long Mynd yet is only minutes from the town. Lovely walks nearby and a good bus service to Shrewsbury and Ludlow for a car-free day out. Local eateries are sparse but the Hollybush cafe (150 yards away) and Saxton's deli in the High Street are the pick of the crop. Small market in the square on Thursdays and a warm welcome at the Kings Arms further along the High Street with a lovely garden. We would have no hesitation in returning at any time of year. A very comfortable (& clean) cottage.

Although the bed isn't in a separate room it still feels plenty spacious enough with a good kitchen and cosy sofa area. We loved sitting outside on the patio listening to the birds or watching them from the living area window. The cottage is in a perfect location for beautiful walks from the door with the town only a short stroll away, yet being in a green, secluded setting. It's a big advantage not having to pay for parking at Cardingmill Valley & to take a quieter route through the woods. We could easily have left the car at home & arrived by train. The owners were welcoming and let us know they were around if we needed anything but we still had privacy. Thankyou to them for a lovely stay.

Lovely cottage in a very convenient position.

Weather not great during our stay but the cottage is very cosy. Hope we can return with better weather when we can enjoy more of the stunning countryside.

Met the owners upon arrival as they were going away themselves. Was given all the info we needed about the property, local area & things to do. So off to a good start. And ut just got better during our stay. The property was spotless, everything you needed was supplied, tea, coffee, biscuits, milk, towels......the list goes on. Great location for walks,.as we did the Long Mynd. Great views and just so relaxing. We had been forecast snow...didn't arrive and the weather was great. 5-10 min walk into Church Stretton, where we found locals, hikers, dog walkers etc all very friendly and relaxed. The local pub, The Kings Arms is well worth a visit. Nice atmosphere, good food, friendly staff & clientele, oh yeah an free sausage rolls 5pm till gone lol. All in all a lovely few days away and will definitely be returning. Dave & Becky...Birmingham.

.. The cottage sits prettily among picturesque Shropshire hills into which it’s easy to walk straight from the cottage door. The cottage is comfortable and warm (it was a very chilly week)! Church Stretton and its amenities are a short walk across the garden. The owners are amenable but not intrusive + the people of the town are also very friendly. Many thanks!

An ideal cottage for a couple, right in the heart of Church Stretton with wonderful walks straight from the cottage door into the Shropshire Hills.

We did this holiday with out the car as the railway station was only ten minutes away and there was a regular bus service from the Town. Also the owners of the cottage were near by to help with any queries that you might need. Wonderful!

Very good location with just a short walk to local shops etc, though walking up and down the unmade drive is not for anyone who finds walking difficult and definitely not for those using a walking aid.

Really pretty views from the sitting area - beautiful trees and lots of squirrel sightings. The cottage has all you need for a comfortable stay, once you have mastered the heating and/or stove. The owners are lovely - friendly but not intrusive - and responded very quickly when there was a minor problem. The information folder needs updating as some of the businesses mentioned have changed/closed down.

Woodpecker cottage is lovely and comfortable, the shower is good, it is all spotlessly clean.

It is very central to Church Stretton, a short walk across the garden. There are lots of walks from the cottage door. This was our 2nd visit and we hope to return again!

After a warm welcome from the owners we were more than impressed with Woodpeckers cottage, clean, warm and comfortable living and sleeping area, well equipped kitchen with dishwasher and washing machine, clear information about it's amenities and surrounding areas.

The patio area was was a delight with lovely scenery and backdrop of the surrounding hills and a short walk through the garden to the lovely town of Church Stretton, couldn't have asked for better with numerous restaurants, cafes and pubs, The Kings Arms especially good food and drink and welcoming staff. Regular bus service to Shrewsbury and Ludlow and a nearby station so with walks along Long Mynd plenty to do, our thanks to the owners best wishes Joyce and Alan

Everything very much to our liking: excellent facilities, comfortable bed, beautiful surroundings and close to town, good walks and other amenities.

We had only a short stay at Woodpeckers cottage but it was very enjoyable.

It is a beautiful part of the country and the situation of the cottage is delightful, looking out over fields and woods and yet within easy reach of the town. We particularly liked the fact that there were bird feeders outside our window so we could see a variety of birds coming to feed. It was good to be able to sit outside even though the weather was a bit cool but we could enjoy what sun there was. The inside of the cottage was very comfortable and homely and everything you could think of was provided. Our hosts were lovely and very helpful to us when we needed it. We would definitely recommend Woodpeckers as a holiday stay and would hope to return some day.

I am tempted to say it’ was a terrible holiday never visit but that would only be in the hope it would always have room for us to revisit a cosy cottage run by a very experienced thoughtful couple who have put much thought into guests needs !

Woodpecker Cottage is a great place to stay.

It was really well equipped, with everything we needed, it was clean, there was ample storage space and because of its location we could walk straight from the cottage to some fantastic walks and it was only a few minutes to the shops and pubs/cafes. We would really recommend this property.

Literally couldn't fault the cottage, the facilities, the town/area or the owners who live nearby. It is a small cottage but perfect for two of us. The owners were most accommodating, very helpful and friendly but discreet, especially as we had some special needs. Thoroughly recommended and would definitely visit again.

Cottage is in a great location within walking distance of shops, cafes and restaurants and the owners were friendly and helpful. There were lots of leaflets and maps in the property with local information which we found really useful.

We can't add any more to all the previous positive feedback from guests, but we have re-booked this same property within 2 days of returning from our first visit.

Excellent location and accommodation - perfect for a couple for a week of walking in the Shropshire hills.

The owners were really welcoming and helpful; the cottage is a very short walk into town and the town has a very good range of shops, cafes and good options. The cottage is comfortable and had everything we needed for a relaxing break.

It was a really cosy cottage and had everything you could possibly want.

The owners were very hospitable and friendly. The only observation we had was that we didn’t realise the bed was incorporated in the lounge but it wasn’t a problem. Maybe we didn’t read the description properly. We had a lovely time there and would be happy to return .

We were nice and warm throughout with very effective electric thermostat controlled heating and the option of a log fire too. Highly recommended for a winter break. So convenient for the town and the hills.

Woodpeckers Cottage is lovely, tucked away with great views but only a few minutes walk into Church Stretton shops, pubs etc.

I would say, however, that the foot access is not good for anyone who has even a minor problem walking as it is along a quite difficult surface. Uneven and stony. By car it would be fine. In general the cottage has all you need for a great stay. However for those who do not want to venture out to eat each evening the kitchen equipment is a little lacking. A baking tray for ready meals, pizzas or baking potatoes would be very useful, as would some dishing up spoons and a measuring jug. Despite a 20 hour power cut and the water going off for most of one day we enjoyed our stay and would certainly consider returning. Our hosts tried very hard to make sure we were OK once they realised the electric and water problems were continuing and sent their son to our rescue which was very much appreciated.

As anticipated, we thoroughly enjoyed being back there in such quiet, restful and comfortable surroundings, yet only a few minutes' walk from the centre of town. The cottage itself is very clean, well-furnished and cozy. The owners live next door and are very helpful and friendly without being at all intrusive. It's a brilliant base for exploring this beautiful area, and there are plenty of walks straight from the door.

We thoroughly enjoyed aour recent stay at Woodpecker Cottage.

It is ideally placed being a stone's throw from town with views overlooking parkland and with many walks available from the door. The compact accommodation is fully equipped, very clean and the welcoming owners have made thorough preparations for reservations in the current situation.

This review is not about Sykes as a company but is meant to describe the cottage and surrounds This was my second time there and it didn't disappoint.

It sits in a large open garden area with superb trees around , Just up the road is Long Mynd, a massive bevel topped hill that is totally surrounded by similar countryside.... magnificent and commonly known as "little Switzerland". Restaurants and takeaways are within 5 minutes walking distance as is the Co op. This is a wonderful area to holiday in a 5 star cottage.

Superb cottage which feels like it's in the middle of no where but just a 5 min walk to the town where you'll find pubs, restaurants, chippy, cake shop and other little quaint shops.

Scenery is stunning and there are loads of walks to do right from the front door, no need to drive anywhere. Would definitely visit again.

The local people including our hosts were very helpful and welcoming too. Many footpaths nearby to walk through the stunning countryside. Would go again in the summer time!

I booked this cottage for a friend in hope that it would be ok.

It was far more than ok - it was absolutely beautiful. On a cold, wet November night we walked into a warm and cosy little dream. The kitchen had everything you could want and the rest of the facilities certainly did not disappoint. It is very private, quiet, close to the very pretty Rectory Woods and only 2 minutes walk to Church Stretton centre. My friend thoroughly enjoyed her stay and would like me to recommend this delightful holiday cottage to anyone who is looking for accommodation in the Church Stretton area.

This cottage is compact but very comfortable and has good facilities. It's in a quiet, secluded location yet only a few minutes' walk from the centre of Church Stretton. Church Stretton itself is a delightful small town with excellent shopping and eating choices, and is central for visits to glorious scenery and many places of interest.

The cottage was superb,everything you could need and set in lovely surroundings and very quiet and peaceful,yet only 2/3 mins.walk to the high street,plenty of café`s,snack bars and restaurant`s with 3 hotel`s all serving food,all in all a great holiday and we will definitely return next year.

Woodpecker Cottage is situated within a five minute walk of the centre of Church Stretton yet gives the impression of being in the heart of the countryside.

Woodpecker Cottage is perfect in every way.

It's location is very quiet although it is only a few minutes walk from the centre of Church Stretton. Stunning walks close by meant we hardly used our car. The owners are a lovely couple who have achieved the correct balance between helpfulness and leaving guests to themslves. This little cottage is set to become a favourite haunt for us and we can't wait to go back.

Excellent cottage with facilities better than most.

Large fridge freezer rather than simply a freezer section in the fridge. Amazing TV facilities, better than I have at home. Simple heating controls. Only one minor quibble is that I found it difficult to dry the lovely soft towels. Maybe some form of heated towel rail? Really good shower with room to stand away from the running water. Friendly owners with playful dogs that are kept apart from the cottage by a small fence. Simple walk across the vestry field to the town where the Bucks Head provided excellent Pub food.

A wonderful cottage in a beautiful location.

Within a few minutes you can walk into town or into the woods and up the hills. The owners are excellent and helpful hosts but not in any way intrusive. We could not fault the cottage in any way.

We had a lovely few days staying at Woodpecker Cottage.

The cottage is easy to find and key access was simple, the welcome pack was appreciated to. Everything you could possibly want was supplied by the friendly owners. Quality kitchen set up and unusual for self catering the sharp knives were indeed sharp! Plenty of towels for the bathroom. Very short walk to the High Street which has plenty of shops and eating places. Also local walks are just around the corner. Would not hesitate to recommend to family/friends.

A lovely couple's cottage with a secluded garden, backing onto a small stretch of trees and a small cliff.

Location was perfect, as was 2 minutes from the high road, backed onto a decent short walk, and is about 5-10 minutes from Cardingmill Valley. Kitchen is fairly well stocked equipment-wise, though storage is a bit cosy, and they provided a coffee press & teapot with some supplies already there (which was a nice touch after a long train journey!). All in all a well maintained and well furnished, excellent location for a weekend away, would recommend, and we will likely rebook the cottage if and when we decide to come back for a longer stay!

This cottage is in an ideal situation about a three minute walk from all the facilities of Church Stretton, yet in a secluded and quiet location on the edge of a wood with footpaths up onto the Long Mynd.

Church Stretton itself is an ideal base for walking and exploring the area. It has good places to eat, and several independent shops to explore. Although small, the cottage is well-planned and we were very comfortable there. The owners are just next door and very helpful though not at all intrusive.

Loved the individual shops.Please hold on to them Church Stretton, they are worth their weight in gold. So much beautiful countryside for miles around, wonderful historic buildings and market towns. "Oh to be in England, now that spring is here."

The cottage is beautifully positioned in the owners' garden and it is just a short walk into the town's shopping area and railway station.

There are several excellent walks which can be done direct from the cottage. Church Stretton is very conveniently placed for visiting Shrewsbury and Ludlow.

Very romantic and comfortable cottage at the bottom of the Long Mynd. Church Stretton is a lovely little town, Shropshire a beautiful place to explore. If there was any niggle, it would be that the sofas are a bit uncomfortable, especially for a romantic cuddle. But I am nit picking, 'cos the cottage was equipped to the hilt with every thing you could possibly need from picnic basket to bedside torches.

The location of the cottage was spectacular as were the views all around.

Walking suited to all types was brilliant and very picturesque. Although Church Stretton is a town it feels and looks more like a village with a lovely welcoming feel.
