  • "Great property, could sit and look out through the bi-fold doors all day at the view across the bay to Bossington Hill, stunning as the sun goes down."

    ..literally changes colour. Very well equipped, house not lacking in any department, only issue would be lack of space to hang clothing items up, apart from one wardrobe downstairs, other than that no quibbles. Nice touch of the owners to leave local information on walks, maps etc...very useful and helpful in an unfamiliar area with limited time to explore. Happily return. PS.....Porlock Weir also a great little hamlet

  • "Everyone now and then you happen upon somewhere that almost feels like a privilege to stay at."

    This is such a place. West Porlock has everything you need, the views from Worthy Barn are wonderful and you can pick up numerous walking routes from straight outside the property. An absolute treasure.

  • "Very comfortable barn conversion with a fabulous view of the coast, perfect area for walking & running, but there are several simple tweaks that would improve the accommodation from a 4 to a 5 star rating, in our opinion."

    One vitally important thing we would like to point out is the parking, or lack of it. Your website calls it "ample parking," which is clearly incorrect. Our group of 7 adults arrived in 4 cars and there was clearly only sufficient space to comfortably park 3 cars. And in the information pack left by the owners, it clearly states that one of those 3 spaces was for the other property! Luckily, there was no one staying there, so we managed to juggle the cars. But there is nowhere else to park, other than in the allocated space, as the road is far too narrow. Both ground-floor showers’ drainage couldn’t keep up with the water flow; we really needed a sink plunger. We had to use our hands instead. The shower trays were very slippery, and we had to use towels or flannels to stand on in order to feel safe. The ground-floor bedroom with 2 single beds had nowhere to put wet towels. The first-floor double bedroom needs a mirror. The first-floor en-suite needs a shelf for toiletries. It would be handy if there was somewhere to put soap, shampoo etc. in the showers, other than the floor. The lounge could do with an additional flat coffee table for playing games on. There was sufficient room for us 7 adults to sit on a comfortable seat, but if there were 8 adults, which your website suggests the barn could accommodate, one person would have to sit on the bean bag (not ideal if you're elderly). We had to buy new batteries for the TV remote control. Neither the water collector nor the fluff filter had been emptied on the tumble dryer since it was last used. The Miele vacuum cleaner bag was full, so very smelly when we used it before we left. And there were no spare bags. On the whole, we did enjoy our week's stay, but it could've been improved upon. But I'm afraid your "ample" parking statement on your website should be amended immediately, because it is clearly very misleading to future customers.

    The children enjoyed exploring and playing in the quirky garden and the raised decking was brilliant for taking in views of the sea and bays. A short walk takes you down to the harbour and beach of Porlock Weir where there is a pub, cafe and restaurant. The house is well equipped with quality bathrooms and comfortable beds. It is a great place to stay!

  • "We just could not fault it."

    First class and high end kitchen utensils, crockery and appliances. The lined and towels were quality. Beds were comfy. Both the kitchen and lounge had exceptional views of the sea and south west Wales coast line. Spent the afternoons relaxing on the decking sipping a nice chilled wine. We will certainly be back and looking forward to seeing the enhancements to the property such as patio furniture for the decking (outside kitchen) and opening the balcony in the lounge area which will just make the views more stunning. We would agree with other reviews that the walk to Porlock Weir is not suitable for the elderly or children. The beach from the cottage is in inaccessible but the views from the barn were stunning. If you are looking for a sandy beach for children then Minehead would be ideal. We would recommend visits to Whortleberry tea room (Porlock) and the bottom ship inn at Porlock Weir. If you any issues or concerns about the property then ,Dave (gardener/ maintenance) was pleasant, helpful and provided some extremely useful tips were to visit.

  • "The property is fabulous BUT, it could easily be a 10 out of 10 with some added attention to details."

    We’ve used VRBO, AirBandB & Sykes for rentals and a welcome package is so nice…. Eggs, milk, bread, bacon… not just a bottle of wine! The information on the property such as the range instructions and TV need to be added. Also, the downstairs beds really need to be upgraded to pillow tops. Otherwise, it’s an awesome location and property. It would have been great to be able to access the upstairs deck from the living room.

  • "Fantastic property."

    Beautifully furnished. Very comfortable beds. Super showers. Plenty of hot water. Well equipped kitchen. Fabulous garden with access to paddock - so useful for our dog. Beautiful views. Walks from the door. Lovely to meet the owner who was dropping off items which another reviewer had suggested were needed. Very kind and friendly. Also met attentive and friendly David (handyman) who became our local area historical guru! We enjoyed our week's stay so much that we stayed another week. We will definitely be back. As per owner's request, our feedback includes a small suggested improvement.....it would be even more ideal if our dog could have joined us in the upstairs lounge in the evenings- perhaps a snug area downstairs or a stair gate upstairs stopping dog access to bedrooms would be the answer.

  • "A quick 3 night family break before Christmas."

    The house has been recently refurbished and looks amazing. Very cosy inside, heating is superb. Inside is well appointed with high end bits and bobs. The area is very beautiful, we haven't been to porlock before but we'll definitely return. Local pub just a walk away and amazing evening meals, the costal path into porlock weir is currently blocked by fallen trees so we had to use the road. Only thing I'd say the house needs is some baking trays in the kitchen and toilet brushes. All in all, a great little break which was just what we needed.

  • "Before reading my review please understand that my stay here was affected by storm Darragh."

    Badly affected, we had to leave two days late and had no power/heating for 3 days afterwards In no way can the owners or Sykes be blamed for this, but I wanted you to know the context for my review, The Property: Stunning, comfortable, spacious and everything we could ask for. We go away in the UK a couple of times a year, we like peace, quiet, some luxuries, This offers all of that. Location: As beautiful and stunning as the property. I didn't know Somerset had so much to offer. The view from the property is worth the price of admission alone, let alone anything else. If you like exploring and countryside you'll be very happy here. Friendliness: The local people here were great. Friendly, helpful, chatty. The local pubs were great, Nothing not to like and much to enjoy. Contact: Dave, the caretaker, was brilliant!! Properly so!! He couldn't have been more helpful during, not the best of times. He went above and beyond and all I have to say thank you. Problem: There is a reason that this isn't a 5* review. I can't fault the owners, property, location, scenery or people, but I have a pet peeve (pun intended). I am tired of reading "Pet Friendly" when often it's actually "Pet Tolerant". I understand no pets on furniture or beds. I understand no pets in certain rooms. Yet here, based on the house rules, that you don't get to see until you arrive, are basically "lock your dog in the kitchen or outside". My dog is part of my family. When you have no electricity, the room with a log burner is on the first floor, you are sat under torchlight, and your dog is locked downstairs, that is is unreasonable. Even without the affects of the storm, to me, that is unreasonable. Either your Pet Friendly or not, i don't think Worthy Barn is. Conclusion: Fantastic place to go and stay, just less so for dog owners.

Regarding our rules, we try to find a balance that works for all guests. Pets are allowed in the main kitchen / diner / living space and hall downstairs, but not in the bedrooms or upstairs.   • "This was a lovely property but there were a few issues we found as relatively elderly people."

    There was absolutely no where to put personal items in any of the bathrooms. No bath or shower mats were provided and shower floor and bath were all slippery. There was only one small wardrobe available in the whole property. The said mile to the pub is up a very steep road and we found it very hard going to walk. The beach, which looks close is also not accessible unless climbing down a very steep pathway. The last few miles to the property also are single track making for difficult driving at times.

Regarding the bath / shower mats, and shelves - the mats should have been provided so I apologise, and we have since added some additional shelves in the bathrooms. On storage, we have hangers and a chest of drawers in every room but sadly cannot have a large wardrobe in every room. I will look into more storage though, so thank you for the guidance. On access to the pub, there is a footpath route which avoids the hills and also offers easier access to the beach. Unfortunately Exmoor does have a lot of contours.   • "The property is beautiful and has amazing views."

    Nicely decorated and very comfortable. The kitchen has all necessary supplies for cooking with even two (!) dishwashers to make the cleanup easy. Even a froth maker on hand for delicious coffees. Everything brand new. We couldn’t have asked for more. We were 2 families with kids and had a fantastic time at Worthy Barn and it’s stunning surroundings. I would highly recommend!

The property

Worthy Barn is an impressive historic grade 2 listed converted barn property situated down a quiet lane with panoramic views over the North Somerset Coastline.

It has a unique setting in the picturesque Exmoor National Park walking distance from the charming town of Porlock with its Weir and popular pub.

This holiday home sleeps eight adults making it a perfect getaway for generations of families or groups of friends.

A well-behaved dog is welcome and the fantastic gardens with direct beach access make it a perfect holiday retreat for all.

On arrival, guests can park their cars on the private drive next to their holiday home.

Entrance into a useful hall, perfect for coats and wet gear it then leads into the handy utility area with washing machine and fridge/freezer, and into a stunning kitchen, complete with all the necessary amenities and appliances for a week away.

The vast glazed doors invite in the panoramic sea view providing a perfect place to dine with a backdrop you will never forget.

At the opposite end of the hall are two beautifully presented bedrooms, one king-size and a a twin room, serviced by two shower rooms, so there is plenty of space to freshen up.

Upstairs, you will find a further breathtaking view from the sitting room where you can put your feet up in front of the woodburning stove and enjoy a good movie night with family and friends, or throw open the French doors and sit out on the roof terrace and watch the evening light over Porlock Bay.

Along the corridor you will discover two further splendid bedrooms including one with a full size bunk bed, great for kids and suitable for adults, and a further bedroom with king-size double and an en-suite shower room for extra privacy.

Finishing off the first floor is an inviting bathroom where you can soak at the end of a long day.

Worthy Barn is a stone's throw from Porlock Beach, a 6 mile stretch of shingle, part of the South West Coast Path.

There is also a plethora of beaches to explore – from sandy Minehead and Dunster to Lee Bay rock pools and sand at low tide, Combe Martin and of course the fossil-rich headland and bay at Blue Anchor and Watchet – but do be aware of the tide!

For those that love to be at one with nature, the Exmoor National Park is laced with winding cliff paths, footpaths and bridleways encompassing open heather-clad moorland.

Walk the rugged South West Coast Path, Coleridge Way or try some of the world-class mountain biking trails for every skill level or Pony trekking at Horner.

For a slower pace, enjoy a picnic at Tarr Steps, with its ancient clapper bridge or spend a day meandering through Medieval Dunster visiting the Castle.

A short drive away, you will find the pretty harbour town of Minehead, with its picturesque beach and charming array of independent shops, or for an afternoon of culture, venture to Lynton and Lynmouth, two beautiful villages set on the dramatic North Devon Coast.
