What guests are saying
Lovely property.
Will definitely be back! A couple of minor improvements would mean full marks: Information about hot water timer and when it is on would be useful. Garden is a bit overgrown and could do with a prune to allow more light into the cottage.
Our stay at Lydia Cottage was relaxing comfortable and really homely in a lovely Cromarty with its Pub and tasty bakery
2nd time we’ve stayed at Lydia Cottage, lovely location because Cromarty is wonderful.
The only drawback is the seasonal price; for our first visit in March ‘25 the facilities were on par with the cost but, staying in peak season at double the price, the basic nature of the furnishings and the rather shabby conditions really stand out. Lydia Cottage needs a good refurbishment, a refresh of the white goods, replace the chipped Denby dinner set and upgrade the tech. A lick of paint, clean up the mould and sort out the rusty gate. Then £2.5k for a fortnight won’t feel quite so spicy. Oh and replace the 40mb/s adsl+ line with the nice shiny 5gb/s fibre your ISP is already offering, it’ll probably be cheaper…
Thank you for your feedback and for your continued support, we're pleased to hear you enjoyed the location and your time in Cromarty. We appreciate your honest comments regarding the property's condition and pleased to advise that a refurbishment of the cottage is currently in the pipeline, which will help address a number of the areas you've highlighted. Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts with us.
A great location in the middle of Cromarty.
The garden is lovely to sit in for al fresco meals and drinks. The beds are comfy, in the light and airy attic. The wifi didn't function, but we were happy to do online essentials in the friendly pub a few metres down the street.
Thank you for you review, we're so glad you we're able to enjoy the garden during your stay and we're sorry about the issues with the WiFi, but it sounds like a great work around if it meant a trip to the local pub. Hopefully it won't deter you from returning, we'd love to welcome you back in the future.
The cottage is situated very nicely within Cromarty.
It has everything you need for your stay. We found it very comfortable. Our only problem is it gets very warm in the bedroom as it is in the roof space which is of course to be expected. Would stay again but maybe a little earlier or later in the year. If you like a drink it is very handy for the local pub.
Thank you for your kind comments, we're glad you enjoyed your stay and we would love to welcome you back again.
Compared to an earlier stay at the cottage, maintenance leaves much to be desired.
The grounds are in sad shape and negellcted. Cutting the grass, pruning ushes and trees needed. Rusty iron gate. Wooden fence sshoing signs of decay. The equipment in the kitchen is sub-standard (ie. missing pots/pans); the place has not been dusted before we came in...dusst on window sills, frames of pictures, .... TV service is minimal at best...it would not take much to get this ship-shape, and it would be worth it as it is a lovely cottage and village. At the current price for a week, one can and will expect more, better service.
Lydia Cottage is cosy, warm and stunning.
Our 2nd stay in the cottage, can highly recommend as a base for the Black Isle and the Highlands in general. Cromarty is a beautiful village with good local amenities and attractions.
thank you for your lovely words!
House was bitterly cold to start.
As if storage heaters were only just put on. Garden a mess - not even tidied las autumn and badly needs some tlc . Bedroom was small but ok just. 2 main rooms v good as was bathroom
Well situated in Cromarty, near to the Fishertown Inn and handy for dog walks.
The cottage is prettily decorated, beds were comfortable and it was very clean. We thought the sitting room however was not set up for comfort. There was no firewood provided even for one cozy winters evening and we were very uncomfortable on the sofa/chair.
Really glad you liked the decor and found the cottage clean. Sorry you didn't find the sofa comfortable, we haven't heard that before so will check it out. We do provide a starter pack for lighting the fire and more firewood can be sourced in the local shops.
Stayed here lots of times over the years and always love it.
thank you for your lovely feedback!
The property is in a great location, comfortable and warm.
However there were issues. Dishwasher, top tray not functioning properly. Cupboard door in kitchen with faulty handle. Toilet flush handle faulty. No wooden spoons for cooking. Smoke alarm on the final night kept going off at will. For the whole week of our stay there was no internet access available in the property.
Thank you for your feedback. These issues have all been resolved. Glad you found the property comfortable and warm and in a great location.
Our time in the cottage was wonderful.
This is our second stay in the house and it has everything that makes a stay very comfortable. It is very cozy.
Thank you for your kind review, we're so glad you enjoyed your stay and the and found the cottage cosy. We're thrilled to hear you are returning guests and hope to welcome you again in the future.
Charming cottage with a nice garden.
Perfect location in lovely Cromarty.
Thank you so much for your feedback — we really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience. We hope to welcome you back to a National Trust for Scotland property in the future.
It’s an idyllic cottage.
Very comfortable and warm. Garden could do with a little a pruning. It’s an excellent base to explore the surrounding area, inc the West/North Coast. Cromarty is a quaint village, everyone we met was so welcoming, we have rebooked already for next year!
Thank you for the lovely review, Cromarty is a beautiful place to visit with lovely views over the Cromarty Firth, so glad you enjoyed them and that we will see you again next year!
Couldn't find any documentation about the appliances (in particular the washing machine).
A larger milk jug and tea cosy would have been useful. Also a mirror in the bedroom would have been helpful.
Thank you for your helpful feedback. We're sorry the appliance instructions weren’t easy to find – we’ll look into improving the documentation. We appreciate your suggestions and will pass these on to the team for consideration. We hope you still had an enjoyable stay!
A very lovely cottage within a wonderful town.
Lydia is a little basic and could do with a few updates but that is reflected in the price whilst the location, thirty seconds from the beach and bang in the centre of Cromarty, is well worth that price.
Lovely comfortable cottage, near to all local amenities.
Well equipped and clean. Ideal for two people Suitable for our two large dogs. Only negative was the low ceiling height in the bedroom, my husband banged his head several times! Obviously this shows in the photo's but it was a last minute booking for a funeral so we had limited choice and it was not booked for a holiday as such. There was a car parked all week in the recommended parking space , but we parked on Church St ok.
Lydia cottage is an excellent little cottage, set in the picturesque location of Cromarty on the Cromarty Firth.
A nice location to relax and unwind, plenty of local walks for you and your pet's. The cottage is well equipped with all the essentials that everyone needs to make it a home away from home. The only item that could be improved on (in my mind) is maybe a multi fuel burner instead of the open coal fire.
We stayed at the cottage over New Year and it was a great way to bring in the bells!
The cottage was so cosy and warm . We went to the hotel for our Hogmanay dinner and were not disappointed. The baker and village shop provided all we needed for our stay and a couple of visits to the Fishertown Inn were a treat. This was a return visit for us and we will be back for the advertised Fossil Walk.
Had a couple of minor issues which were dealt with by the lovely on-site NTS people.
Been to Lydia Cottage lots of times over the years and always love it. Warm and cosy well appointed and cared for cottage in the heart of a beautiful and welcoming village .
This was our second time staying at Lydia Cottage and won't be the last.
It is such a wonderful place to unwind and relax.
We had a nice relaxing break in this property.
It was quaint, comfortable and in a very enchanting village. One or two minor negatives would be overgrown shrubbery which made seeing the key code on outside wall key safe very difficult because of light levels. The shower leaked onto the floor due to a sealing issue. Also in the bathroom there was unsightly black mould around outside of shower cubicle and above the window blind (photos can be provided). No handwash/soap in either bathroom or kitchen. In the sitting room which was comfy we found a dogs ball and bits of fluff etc under the couch obviously from previous rentals..missed by cleaner? These small details marked this property down for us.
Thank you for your feedback. We have asked the team in Cromarty to trim the shrubs around the door and have also asked them to ensure that the vacuuming covers all the flooring, check the shower seal.
What a cozy cottage in a quaint community!
A little bar just a short walk down the road is warm and welcoming— serves food lunch and dinner and has a side room to read or play board games. The ferry operates during summer months to make a quick jaunt north easy. Cottage was clean, quiet and comfortable as we had a cozy fireplace for the cool nights… would definitely come back !
Many thanks for your lovely comments. Cromarty is a great wee town, a famous Scottish writer has a home there to escape city life.
Well decorated and comfortable.
Excellent sized kitchen area especially with the dog. Cute garden which does suffer from passers by stopping etc but that is to be expected in a small place. All in all we liked the cottage and the place and would return in future.
Great location for walking on beach and countryside, pub two doors down with local beer and pub food that allowed dogs in!
Easy walk to the village shop and local bakery. Cottage had character of an older property but with all facilities there. A larger and smart TV and a footstool would have been good for the evenings we were at home.
We loved our stay at Lydia cottage in Cromarty.
Cosy, homely with all the comfort we wished for. We also enjoyed our free entry to the Hugh Miller’s Birthplace cottage & museum. Interesting and a MUST SEE. Fantastic cycle and walking opportunities around Cromarty. We had a great time. We definitely will go back there.
The cottage is very clean and comfortable and tastefully decorated.
It is well placed to enjoy all that Cromarty has to offer. We loved the Hugh Miller museum and the staff there are so friendly and knowledgeable. Unfortunately the weather was not warm enough to enjoy the garden but inside the cottage was cosy. My only suggestion is for thicker towels as the ones provided are quite thin and we found it difficult to get ourselves fully dry before the towel got wet. A word of advice- You do need to be very organised in Cromarty regarding shopping etc as most places are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Thank you for a lovely holiday.
We loved Lydia Cottage.
We would definitely stay there again. Beautiful decor and felt very welcoming and cosy.
Thank you for your lovely comments and we look forward to welcoming you back to Cromarty or one of our other cottages.
A charming and idyllic little cottage, loved the kitchen diner and bright bedroom with a glimpse of the sea.
Great position in the lovely town of Cromarty.
Many thanks for your lovely comments. Lydia was refurbished in December 2023 by our inhouse refurbishment manager. We think he did a great job.
Only a small problem with the rubbish.
The wheelie bins were quite full when we arrived. I put them out early on Wednesday but they weren’t lifted so the bins are still full.
Thank you for your feedback we are contacting Highland Council as to why the bins are not being emptied.
Cosy cottage in a great and quiet location with pub, coffee shops, bakery and mini supermarket within a few minutes walk.
Everything you need for a relaxing holiday. Very comfortable beds and well resourced kitchen. An extra bin bag would be useful! It's a lovely area and we would definitely stay here again.
Cromarty is a great wee village, a famous Scottish crime author does his writing there! Lydia Cottage is having a soft refurbishment in December 2023.
Great centrally located cottage.
A sweeping brush would've been handy for kitchen and a couple of baking trays. Beds comfy nd clean, overall a great holiday.
Many thanks for your feedback, Lydia is having some refurbishment in December 2023 and we will be replenishing the kitchen amongst other jobs.
A perfect idyllic cottage on the Black Isle.
In the heart of Cromarty a stone throw away from the shore and main attractions of Cromarty. Facilities of the cottages were everything we needed for a last minute getaway for 2 nights. Kitchen was fully equipped with everything you could need. Livingroom had lovely soft furnishing and was well presented. The twin beds were exceptionally comfy. The overall cleanliness of the cottage was good. Minor things were that the throw pillows on the bed had lots of dog hair on them and beard hair was left on the mirror. We had a really great time and would recommend the cottage.
Comfortable cottage in excellent quiet location.
The shape of the property means that a small wardrobe is unavoidable but things could be improved with the addition of a couple of chests of drawers in the bedroom to store clothes. We felt that we were living out of our suitcases.
Great property and location which we have used before.
Could do with a baking tray!
Very comfortable cottage in centre of Cromarty.
This was our second visit.
Such a lovely cottage in a beautiful place - really felt like a break away from our usual routine.
My husband and I loved our stay in Lydia Cottage.
It was just perfect for us and our two dogs. We hope to be back soon.
I left a comprehensive feedback post in the visitors book.
The cottage and the town were simply PERFECT 10/10!!
Wow thank you so much for your great review and we look forward to welcoming you back to Cromarty or any of our other NTS cottages.
Even with glasses need a bigger tv, it is getting dark earlier.
New mattress's please. stripped back facilities , kitchen, books, local information due to covid No stripped back prices!
Thank you for your feedback which we do value. We are ordering two new pocket sprung mattresses for Lydia Cottage this week and will review the local information displayed in the cottage. We are hoping to introduce new Guest Folders during the winter season for all our cottages.
Thank you for a pleasant stay in a fabulous location.
I really enjoyed my time in Cromarty.
Thank you for your feedback, Cromarty is a special place.
We have stayed at Lydia cottage many times and have always enjoyed the charm of the cottage and the garden and the village of Cromarty.
Unfortunately however, the beds are extremely uncomfortable. Obviously the mattresses have not been exchanged since our first stay many year ago and you can feel the springs coming through. That diminishes the comfort of the cottage to a considerable degree and needs to be adressed by the National Trust.
Many thanks for your feedback and we will certainly ask the property team in Cromarty to check the mattresses and look at replacement.
We had a fantastic holiday the cottage was ideal for us and cosy.
It was also very close to the sea. Our dog enjoyed the lovely walks in Cromarty as well. We will certainly be booking another holiday in Lydia Cottage hopefully next year.
Thank you for your positive comments, Cromarty is a great location for seeing the highlands, watching the ships sail past the Sutors. We look forward to welcoming you back.
Had a fabulous stay in Lydia Cottage.
It was really clean and had everything we needed for our holiday week.
Thank you very much for your kind comments.
A wonderful few days in the beautiful village of Cromarty.
Loads of walks for our dog Myla in and around the area. Exactly what we were looking for, and will definitely be back.
Thank you very much for your kind comments and we hope to see you back in Cromarty.
The garden is in real need of attention.
Thank you for your feedback. Since your stay we have asked the estate staff from Culloden to come across and assist us with tidying the garden.
We liked Lydia Cottage, it's well situated in the village and has some character.
Cromarty itself is a lovely place to visit and we liked being so close to the firth. The living room and kitchen were lovely, with the latter being sympathetically modernised. We're not a fan of twin beds, however we knew that was the set up and given the pitch of the roof a double probably wouldn't work. A good quality sofa bed is the living room would provide an alternative and would allow the cottage to sleep 4.
Thank you for your feedback. As with all typical Scottish croft cottages and Fishertown cottages the bedrooms are situated under a coomb ceiling so it does restrict how we set out the beds. Thank you for your suggestion about a sofa bed.
We had a very enjoyable stay in Cromarty.
Lydia cottage is just right for two people; the bedroom is filled with light and has a charming view over rooftops to the sea. Kitchen, living room and bathroom downstairs are all comfortable. It's a pleasure to step out into Cromarty's friendly and beautiful eighteenth-century streets. A fine place from which to explore the Black Isle and beyond. (Don't fail to try the delicious food at Sutor Creek on Bank St.)
Many thanks for your positive feedback about Lydia Cottage. Cromarty is a great wee place with a small cinema and there is a good coffee hut called Slaughterhouse Coffee.
A very comfortable, cozy & well appointed cottage in a great location.
Perfect for a quiet break. The owners were very helpful.
Thank you for your kind words, we are glad you enjoyed your stay ay Lydia Cottage. Alix our manager is very knowledgeable about the area and Hugh Miller.
A lovely week in a very relaxing and clean cottage.
It was perfect for a break in Cromarty.
There were no cleaning materials at the house and the standard of cleaning was well below the of the NT cottage we stayed in , St Gabriels, in West Dorset.
We are sorry to have received your comments about the cleanliness in Lydia Cottage, looking through our feedback we haven't had a negative comment before but rest assured we take all feedback seriously.
It is a shame that the garden has not been kept up well - it needs a lot of attention.
Also, we felt it was a bit mean to leave only a tiny amount of washing up liquid and only 2 tablets for the dishwasher. Because of Covid, there was only a small amount of cutlery and crockery left out for us, which we felt was a little over the top. However, we recognise that people in Scotland are very much stricter about the rules regarding Covid.
The Trust only leaves enough consumable materials for the evening of the night of arrival, which includes washing up liquid, dishwasher tablets and hand soap. The expectation is that guests will furnish the rest of their cleaning supplies. The removal of extra cutlery and crockery is a requirement of the National Trust for Scotland's anti-Covid precautions policy which is designed to keep our visitors and staff safe and well.
All the books and dvds had been removed.
There was barely enough cutlery and plates etc, because of COVID?! I haven’t stripped my holiday cottage bare because of COVID so why have has this cottage?
The removal of books, games and DVDs, also the extra cutlery and crockery is a requirement of the National Trust for Scotland's anti-Covid precautions policy which is designed to keep our visitors and staff safe and well.
We had a terrific week in the Lydia Cottage.
The cottage was just the right size for 2 people and 2 well behaved scotties. The garden was enchanting, butterflies and bees made sitting in the sunshine an absolute pleasure. The locally made shortbread was a nice touch . So much to do in the area we will need to return.Try the slaughterhouse coffee shop and sutor creek deli both very good.
We are delighted to hear you enjoyed your stay at Lydia Cottage.
This is a lovely wee cottage in the heart of Cromarty.
The cottage was the perfect size for 2 people and had everything we needed. I'm not sure whether the gardener had been recently but it was rather unruly and weedy. Cromarty itself is a very lovely and interesting fisher town village with a lovely coffee shop at the pier. Lovely shops and very good food at The Royal Hotel.
It is lovely to read that you enjoyed your stay in our unique village. We had been unable to carry out our weekly gardening routine during the lockdowns but we can now get back to the routine. Just a note to say that we don not use herbicides on the garden.
