Achmore Schoolhouse

Achmore Schoolhouse was a lovely base for our week in Lewis.

Spacious, great views and well appointed. Large driveway for parking and on the main road so easy to spot, although set back so you never hear any traffic noise. Central location and very comfortable so would highly recommend. Thanks.

Achmore Schoolhouse was a comfortable base for our week on Lewis and met our needs overall, but a couple of things could be improved.

The main issue was the lack of blinds on the Velux windows in the upstairs bedroom, which made early summer mornings very bright during our mid‑June stay. We also noticed that some kitchen items — particularly pots and baking trays — were worn and not as clean as expected, and would benefit from being replaced.

Our second time staying here and we loved it as much as or more than the first time.

Lovely large property in a fantastic location with amazing views to the mountains of Harris and only a 10 minute drive to the Calanais Stones.

The house is very well equipped, with comfy beds and modern bathrooms. Mairi is an excellent, friendly host. The only negative, as of May 2026, is a bit of maintenance required such as replacing some 'tired' utensils and providing equipment user guides so losing a rating star. However that didn't stop us enjoying a brilliant holiday there and do heartily recommend the place.

This is our 3rd stay at Achmore Schoolhouse.

We like the open plan upstairs room with the flexibility to sleep 3 or 4 people up there, and a possible 5 downstairs, as we travel in a larger group. An upstairs toilet is the only thing the house misses. situated as it is just 10 minutes drive from Callanish, and on the way to Harris, we find it very central as we explore every inch of the islands.

Perfectly situated for exploring the whole of Lewis and Harris, yet close enough to the facilities of Stornoway.

Beds very comfortable and showers great. Lovely distant views to the front of the property. Stylish conversion of an old school house. Some maintenance needed as several double glazed windows have failed and misted over and extractors in bathrooms don't work. Cleanliness ok but some things could have been better. It was unfortunate that the dishwasher was broken but was replaced in the latter part of our stay. Heating is on a timer. When we got up on our first morning the house was freezing cold. I contacted the owner and complained and was told to get up and press advance on the heating timer to switch the heating on. I explained that this wasn't an acceptable solution and she came round later that day and adjusted the timer settings for us. There is underfloor heating to the bathrooms but we couldn't figure out how to set it. Note that there is no Welcome Pack explaining how devices work and how to use them.

! It’s not on a beach but the view is the Harris hills is one of the best on the island and you are only 15 mins from Stornoway. Complaint: your contact processes are just ridiculous. I still have not heard back from you about the refund for the first booking on this property which you canceled because I didn’t see your emails (they went to junk). I’d like that booking fee back please because we have paid it twice.

We stayed in Achmore Schoolhouse for two weeks and we loved it from the beginning till the end.

Mairi welcomed us with local bakery cookies late in the evening and it was so nice to arrive to the lighted house while outside was completely dark. House is beautiful, aesthetic, spacious and light. We were only two of us but the house is for 8 people and we didn't use the second floor. But to have separate shower and very warm bathroom with a bath - was perfect! Everything is well equipped and thought out – from the kitchen to the room with a washing machine and a dryer. We couldn't open windows ( didn't know how) in our bedroom and Mairi came especially to open them for us. The only thing which was not so good - Teflon pots. They were old and scratched. Of course, it's everybody's choice to use teflon pots or not but these were much too old. Luckily there was a Dutch oven (cast iron pot) and we happily could use it for cooking. Also oven needs a bit of brush up. Besides that, the stay was wonderful , pleasant and we really would love to come back!

The property is in a prime location for exploring the Western Isles.

It is well-equipped - apart from saucepans etc that are rather dilapidated and make cooking more challenging than it ought to be. The property is spacious with plenty of room to accommodate a family - there were only two of us so we were spoilt for space. Rooms are comfortable although the mattresses and pillows could do with enhancing for the benefit of older visitors. Overall a good experience that we would recommend to others; the above caveats that didn't greatly impair our stay.

The house was very clean, light and spacious downstairs with beautiful views of Harris.

However, listing it as property that sleeps 8 is rather stretching it. There were only three of us so it wasn't an issue, however the spiral staircase to the 'sumptuous' upstairs bedroom is pretty wobbly and appears to have been built from a plastic kit. You certainly wouldn't want to be coming down it at night! In addition, both bathrooms are downstairs and one is ensuite, which leaves one bathroom for potentially 6 people. There was no starter pack for the stove, which when we did get it lit, produced zero heat and there was no BBQ.

Achmore house is in an excellent position for touring Lewis and Harris being in the centre of the island.

The amenities in the house are perfect for comfort and enjoyment. The breathtaking view from the front of the house is understated, as is the size of the garden. Our only negative comment is the lack of an upstairs toilet. We had an extremely enjoyable holiday here with our family.

Lovely house in a great location with amazing views.

This was our second visit to the property and would have no hesitation in returning again. Property was spacious and very comfortable. It’s location about 20 minutes from Stornoway makes it ideal for exploring the island.

A lovely comfortable place to stay while on the islands.

Views are spectacular and the house is well equipped with everything you might need. And as you can see from the photos it has been renovated and decorated very stylishly.

Excellently maintained and situated property.

Very conveniently located to tour the island of Lewis and also to travel to Harris. The owner was welcoming, even though we arrived off the late ferry, and had left us a locally made cake and biscuits. I would have no hesitation in recommending Achmore schoolhouse as a holiday location.

Mairi was there to meet us and provided a warm welcome. Cottage was very comfortable and we had everything we needed. We had a fabulous week on the island and would not hesitate to rebook.

Delightful and spacious house and a very convenient location to visit different parts of Lewis and Harris.

Views to the southern hills were lovely. Well equipped and a welcome warm house to return to each day. Shame there is no where outside to store beach paraphernalia and avoid getting sand in the house although the utility room was a great space for drying things! Thank you for the warm welcome.

A beautiful conversion of this locally significant B-Listed building provided our family of eight with a superb and very convenient base for a thoroughly enjoyable week in Lewis.

Clean, well-equipped and spacious accommodation with all mod cons and a superb living area flooded with light and good views this is a gem of a property and fitted our requirements perfectly. Our hostess couldn’t have been more welcoming and hospitable and it’s just a five minute walk to get fresh eggs! Thanks very much! Richard

The house was in a brilliant location, great for exploring Lewis and Harris.

The house was lovely, we loved the open plan living room and kitchen, it was really nicely done and very social. I would definitely recommend the house but there were a few things which could be improved to make the house a stellar stay. I left a note of these for the owner so hopefully they are picked up on for future guests. There was also no information left on how to use appliances, or on the local area, which we found quite unusual.

This is one of those places that how every many photos you take, until you sit at the dining room table and watch the weather roll across Lewis, you simply have no idea of the concept of beauty and space.

Hi, We had a great time at the house.

It was perfect though could do with a hook on the back of the main bathroom door to hang clothes, and a loo brush! This however is very minor, the house was beautiful, had a lovely view, was relaxing and had everything else we needed for a week long stay. It was very well situated to explore the whole Lewis and Harris. Thankyou.

Nice welcome from Mairi and thank you for the welcome gifts. Very good location for sight seeing around Lewis and Harris. Our only issues were the lack of blinds in the attic bedroom and (we had to be inventive with black bin bags) and the fridge was making a very strange noise and must need attention. I am sure that Mairi will address the two points I have mentioned. score ….9/10. would definitely recommend. LHH Response: We have reported the missing blind issue and the noisy fridge to the owner and she is going to get blinds fitted on the windows at the earliest opportunity. Beautiful house with amazing views across to the Lewis and Harris hills.

Very tastefully furnished and well-equipped. Everywhere had been cleaned thoroughly and sanitised with regard to Covid 19 regulations. Extremely welcoming host who ensured we had everything we needed. Situated not too far from the main north/south road which enabled access to all areas of Lewis and Harris. Wonderful holiday!

We had a lovely holiday at Achmore Schoolhouse.

The accommodation was even better than expected and it was a pleasure to return there after our days out exploring. We found it warm and comfortable and appointed to a high standard. It was great to be able to sit at the table and look across to the mountains - an ever changing view with the clouds moving across. The lovely owner greeted us on arrival and left us with some food items which was very kind. We found the location to be ideal for exploring Lewis and Harris as it is centrally placed. This was a bonus as we had underestimated the time it would take to reach and explore some areas. I would definitely book again.

The family all enjoyed their stay and is was a perfect base for visiting the island. A lot of thought has obviously gone into making this a home.

all very modern faciities throughout, very comfortable in every aspect, great layout re family gatherings, very easily found location, great communication with Mairi, probably exceeded our expectations, sadly the same could not said about the weather, but heyho great week enjoyed in exceptional location, WI-Fi good enough for any tasks.
