  • "We had the most amazing but peaceful time at The Old Workhouse Cottage in stanhope."

Could not fault it at all, beautiful and thoughful attention to detail, comfy bed, everything we needed in the kitchen, gorgeous log burner in the living room with all the comforts of home. Weather wasnt good except for one day when we drove into bishop auckland for some fresh air. Lovely and clean and sympathetic to the style of the cottage. This cottage was actually recommended by a friend and it certainly did not disappoint. Good base if you enjpy walking as there are lots of walks to be done in the area. Lovely little decked garden but because of the weather we didnt use but it will be lovely in the summer. Will definately return possibly in the summer. Owners had thought of everything. Parking right outside in a private road, only thing on the down side were the concrete steps up to the property as i was there with my 84 year old neighbour with very limited mobility but we managed ok but not accessible for anyone in a wheelchair. Brilliant peaceful holiday over Christmas which is what we wanted, very quiet and secluded but only a 2 minute walk from the pretty village of Stanhope...10 out of 10.....

It is a very comfortable, clean and nicely decorated throughout. A nice welcome pack on arrival was a nice touch. Just a short walk into Stanhope with welcoming shops & pubs. Lots to do across the area with Beamish, Hadrian's wall & Durham a short drive away. Would definitely recommend staying here.

Brilliant shower, didn't want to get out. We spent our evenings in, with the fire lit but, when we did get some warm sunshine it was love to sit out on the front deck. Birdsong is so clear and a real delight. Another delight was the welcome hamper left by the cottage owners, much appreciated and above and beyonf

The cottage had everything you could need, a real home from home. Our welcome pack was huge & much appreciated. There was even a note on the kitchen blackboard saying "enjoy your stay!" There was no mention of a hairdryer so I took mine, I found there was one in the bedroom drawer. Stanhope is a pretty little village and has a lovely riverside walk. We will definitely be going back.

  • "We had a fantastic time, 5 stars all round, it was such a great stay and thank you for making it so special!"

The only thing I would say for future guests, as we did have to work a couple of days while staying there was the WiFi wasn't able to support two people working, such as video calls and was very slow to load. In an ideal world, I would be staying at your cottage and only enjoying the outdoors but this is the reality of the new working world. Thanks again, I hope you had a nice Christmas!

Sorry you had issues with the Wi-Fi. We realise this is an important service that a lot of guests rely on and will be looking at how we can resolve it. Thank you for your great review we glad you enjoyed your stay overall. Property Owner

Spotlessly clean, and all requirements catered for. The welcome pack was a great pleasure to discover, and nothing was too much trouble for the owners when we rang them for a little advice. The town of Stanhope has everything you need, so no need to venture to supermarkets. Co-op so good, as is the baker and Induan take-away. Locals friendly, and lots to see.

  • "Great holiday cottage for two everything that you could and great welcome pack."

Good walking area and convenient for visiting Durham, Beamish etc. The only slight negative was the very slow Wi-Fi (although there was not problem watching the Netflix etc on the tv!) and the sofa seat cushions could do with new foam inserts. Apart from those two little niggles a great holiday cottage and would definitely consider going back to do some more walking in the area.
