ABERFORD

Wetherby 7 miles; Boston Spa 7 miles; Clifford 8 miles; Leeds 12 miles, Harrogate 17 miles; Knaresborough 16 miles; York 17 miles.

Aberford is a picturesque countryside village resting between Leeds and York. Perfectly positioned in its semi-rural location, there is so much to see and do in one of the many small towns and villages nearby. Whether you’re a nature enthusiast, art lover or thrill seeker, there is something for everyone just a short drive away. Aberford is known for the Aberford Dykes, a series of ancient earthworks believed to be of Roman origin, adding archaeological intrigue to the village's rich history. Dining options include The Arabian Horse, while you can stock up on essentials at the nearby convenience store, Best-One. Just outside of the village is the popular market town of Wetherby, offering picturesque walks along the river or the disused railway, spectacular flowers in the summer, popular musical events at the riverside bandstand, as well as award-winning fish and chips from the Wetherby Whaler. Boston Spa is equally picturesque, with its riverside walks, boutique shops and lively bars, cafes and restaurants. For walkers, there are plenty of strolls or hikes around the Parlington Estate, Hazlewood Castle or Bramham Park. Further afield, you will find peaceful strolls around the beautiful Georgian estate that is Harewood House, or more challenging hikes in the Yorkshire Dales or North Yorkshire Moors. Yorkshire is often referred to as "God's Own Country" due to its stunning natural beauty, rich history, and famous individuals. For history lovers, there is Spofforth Castle and Towton, where "The Battle of Towton” was fought during the War of the Roses in 1461. Or see the Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds for intriguing exhibits, whilst also checking out the other museums, art galleries, parks and interesting architecture that Leeds City Centre has to offer. If you fancy a bit of adventure, Hazlewood Castle, Yorkshire Outdoors, Yorkshire Activity Park, and Go Ape offer activities including quad biking, rifle shooting and paintballing. Or if afternoon tea’s more your thing, Hazlewood Castle or Betty’s in Harrogate offer delicious treats in beautiful surroundings. Shop till you drop in Leeds City Centre’s shopping hub – with upscale fashion and accessories in the Victoria Quarter, chain stores in Trinity Mall or the many indie boutiques on a network of pedestrianised streets. Visit York for the McArthur Glen Designer Outlet, Vanguard Centre, Monks Cross or Clifton Moor for a range of clothing, homewares and everyday items. Or nearby is The Springs, which offers shopping plus dining and a cinema experience. Socialise or take in some local cultural events at the various festivals taking place throughout the year, including Clifford Beer Festival, Barwick-in-Elmet Maypole Festival, Wetherby Beer Festival, The Great White Food Festival and Harrogate International Festival, to name a few. Entertain the kids with an action-packed trip to Stockeld Park, meet some rare creatures at Tropical World or play to your heart’s content at the beautiful Valley Gardens. Go to the National Science and Media Museum to see lots of great displays, or view a show at the Alhambra Theatre to entertain the whole family.
