The cottage is set in beautiful countryside, with many really interesting walks, and nearby Masham has just about everything you might need, including many dog-friendly pubs. In conclusion - we would highly recommend this cottage to anyone looking for a relaxed walking get-away. Reviewed by PeterJul 2019 "Excellent position for walking." No bath, which I didn't check for. Brilliant oil central heating. Very comfortable. Reviewed by StephanieJun 2019 "It's a nice base for a quiet break." Claire and Rob are very welcoming. As observed elsewhere, you have to be careful with dogs as there are few places if any you can let them off the lead and large areas on the moors where they are prohibited during a large part of the year. Long circular walks outside the winter season may become an issue with a dog. On the plus side being on the East of the Dales gives better weather than neighbouring areas. I regularly saw all points of the compass socked in when it was fine here and over Wensleydale. Choose a good day to drive west through Wensleydale. Terrific views. That was just ideal for us. The directions to the accommodation are accurate but fail to mention the access road from the main road is a "cart track" and very uneven and pot holed. This didn't spoil our enjoyment in any way but just needs to be noted if your car is a "low rider." 4X4's will not have any problems. The granary was spotless with clean towels and fresh bedding. The kitchen is in the same room as the sitting area but not a problem for us. The small utility room houses the main boiler and a washing machine for which even powder is provided. Claire and Rod are very un-intrusive and just let you get on with what you are doing but when you do actually see them both, they are really helpful, they even left us a victoria sponge cake on arrival. There is also a large screen TV with Freeview and a drawer full of DVD's to watch should you wish to. As an amateur astronomer, this location is "DARK" so I took my Skywatcher telescope. I used it on a couple of nights and had good results with minimum light pollution and with the moon waxing, the craters were crystal clear. It was a little late to see Orion's nebulae as he was dipping below the hills but what I did see was spectacular on the three cloudless clear nights of our week. There is a very good information folder in the cottage and a pile of local interest leaflets which we found helpful especially when we visited Thorp Perrow Arboretum near Bedale and the Himalayan Gardens near Masham. Masham and Bedale are 10 minutes and 20 minutes away respectively and there's a good co-op in Masham opposite the Jet Garage. Leyburn and Aysgarth are an easy drive from here. For dog owners this is an ideal location with a very good 11/2 mile circular walk around the cottage through woodland and open fields which if done in early morning will blow the cobwebs away for the rest of the day! Just be aware that the area is a sheep farming area and if you do have a dog it must be kept under control especially at this time of year with lambs in the fields. Take decent walking shoes. Trainers will not do! Being woken by bleating sheep, curlews, lapwings and oyster catchers was a pleasure as was the sight of hundreds of rabbits which scattered when a torch is shone at them at night. On that note you will need a torch, a good one as it is pitch black at night and if taking a dog out late on as we do it will be indispensable. During Summer not so important because of the longer days. Thanks to Claire and Rod for the stay I will definitely book you again Reviewed by PaulApr 2018 "The location was everything we'd hoped it would be and more." Unfortunately, there'd been a fall of snow the day before our arrival and its rapid thaw resulted in a large body of deep water in front of the access door to the cottage. We found a snow shovel and used this to scoop away the water till we could get to the door. Some water had entered the cottage and soaked the carpet. We did not make anything of this as the weather this year has been extreme, but it would have been nice to have felt that the owner was around and aware of the position. The cottage was fine, double glazing and oil heating excellent, and generally comfortable without being fussy. We have a dog and were aware that sheep and lambs would be nearby. In fact, it's not possible to walk a dog off the lead near the cottage, in the woods, fields or on the moors as this is specifically forbidden, and no-one wants their dog shot at. So the remoteness of the site actually made walking our dog harder than at home. This of course is not the fault of the cottage, but I think they should let dog owners know it. The owner was unobtrusive and the whole site was blissfully quiet. It delivers what you'd expect and the price was good, but remember that if the weather's bad in the Vale of York, then up here it's something else!
