  • "4 to 6 days in bed!"

------------------------ Lounge: comfy, seating for four, adequate lighting, decent telly … however, if you want to catch up on ITV soaps you can’t because the ITV App isn’t available, nor is Four. Netflix and Prime are there, but if you want to view your favourite Apps bring your own streaming device - and if it needs power, bring a double adapter. Kitchen: very well appointed. If you need filter coffee, or a crockpot, or an air fryer, bring your own. Bathroom: a good shower with a choice of rainfall or handheld or both. It’s fun finding out which way to turn the controls to get what you want.

All the appliances were top end and well maintained. It was well situated in the town, back from the main road, and only a couple of minutes walk into the centre. The Co-op was right behind the property. The accommodation was very comfortable. The king-sized bed on the ground floor was amazing. It was like sleeping on a cloud. My friend stayed in the twin room upstairs, and he didn't find the bed very comfortable, and he kept hitting his head on the ceiling. I blame his clumsiness for that, though

Comfortable and well equipped, lots of walks from the doorstep and plenty of places to eat locally. The Co -op literally behind the property but a very quiet area. The small lane leading to the property is quite narrow and some shrubbery was slightly overgrown but we managed to get by ok. The lane doesn't look like it's an adopted roadway so a little rough in places.

Sykes should change this! Having said that it was easy to find if you had looked at the picture. The cottage was extremely comfortable and well equipped. The only criticism is that the skylight in the bedroom wakes you up very early. I took a blindfold which did help but is not particularly comfortable to wear. As many others have said, the skylight does need a blind or blackout paint. The bed was really comfortable, the shower was great and the kitchen well equipped although a new frying pan would be good. Instructions for all the equipment is in the kitchen and there are spare lightweight duvets in the cupboard by the bathroom. The cottage is conveniently situated within easy reach of several pubs and shops. The Co-op is next door. The White Bear was really close and a great place to eat.

It was very clean, great location. I think bathroom has been changed since the photos were taken (bathroom is lovely). Shower was very good. Agree with previous reviews - house number still wrong on listing but we found it no problem due to reading other reviews. The upstairs room has a curtain rather than a door and roof is low above beds so better for kids which we knew. The skylight didn’t cause us any issues since it is winter but would be very light for sleeping in summer. In a positive twist, one night we could see the stars above from bed! However we feel there are a couple of points that require attention: The bathroom door was difficult to close and unlock. One of us felt there should be blackout blinds in both bedrooms. I found the single bed I used was uncomfortably hard. There were no instructions on how to turn on the heating and towel rail. The shed was locked with no info on the number combination to use, so it could not be used. I also feel that the downstairs bedroom would benefit from having 2 single beds that can be locked together to make a double if required, to give maximum flexibility for renters.

It had no blind or curtain to shut out the light. We cannot sleep in bright light and as it gets light around four a.m. there was no way we were going to get a good night’s rest.As it was extremely high up, we had no way of doing anything about it. We phoned the owner, whose best suggestion was to buy eye masks(at five o clock on a bank holiday Friday)! We then phoned you to be promised a response, which as usual, we never got! We even were given a reference number; COR-213143-CF, to use when in contact with you. No attempt was made to contact us whilst we were away and only this generic email since. The second bedroom beds were also not good enough for adult use, more for children. My six foot + son had some uncomfortable nights. Had any of the above facts been stated in the property description we would never have booked it. To be fair, the facilities were of a high quality, the location very convenient and we were blessed with good weather. We would welcome your response on these matters but imagine it will not happen. As I have said before we have used your services previously and been very happy. This time it really was not at all satisfactory.

There were, however, some issues that needed attention and most of these should have been dealt with before we arrived. Main problem is that there are uncovered Velux windows in the lounge and master bedroom. In the master bedroom this means that sunlight wakes the occupants up very early in the morning. In the lounge, the sunlight can shine on the TV causing a distraction. This has been pointed out by previous occupants also. There is no requirement for these Velux windows which are so high that a blind covering is not possible. Fill them in for goodness sake! There two single beds upstairs have ridiculously hard mattresses and were made up with Winter specification quilts - for Summer !! Not difficult to sort out. We had to find the summer quilts ourselves. We arrived to find a note apologising for a dripping kitchen tap and advising that a plumber had been called. We left at the end of a week without a plumber visiting. It doesn't take a week to get a dripping tap fixed! Also, hand basin in the bathroom had a mostly occluded outlet so emptying was very slow. The boiler had been left in the Summer position and we experienced a week of coldish weather. The boiler made a horrid noise after being switched to Winter position after around 2 hours and in both Summer and Winter positions it required several reset procedures. To reiterate, the property is very pleasant and furnished to a high standard but, for the money paid, attention to detail is expected. Sadly, this was not the case. No instruction manual for the oven which would have been helpful. Sticking bathroom door difficult to shut.

The countryside is breathtaking, ideal for walks and exploring. When you get back there are several excellent pubs serving beer from the two local breweries. We usually stay in one of the pubs but thought we would give self catering a go. Setch Barn looked to be a good place to start. Initial impressions were good, it is ideally situated in the town next to the co op, you could hear the cars but it wasn’t intrusive. The property itself is attractive, if unimaginatively styled, not quite a traditional barn in rural North Yorkshire. The quality of the furnishings is good. The main room and bedrooms are a good size, however the kitchen is rather on the small size. Unfortunately the property is very cold in winter, this was further compounded with the boiler breaking down twice in two days leaving us with out hot water on two occasions and no heating. Despite the help from Sykes the matter was unresolved so we abandoned our holiday early. We wouldn’t visit the property again, in our opinion the standard isn’t there to justify the high price. What a shame.

  • "This property makes maximum use of space with crisp, clean design."

It is very conveniently sited for the village, and Masham is a great centre for touring the area. The barn contained everything we needed (4 adults and a baby), though visitors need to be aware that the second bedroom is closed off from the lounge area by a curtain rather than a door and this leads on to steep stairs. The kitchen is fully equipped for self catering, though there are plenty of places to eat in the village. We enjoyed Thorp Perrow arboretum, the Himalayan Garden near Grewelthorpe and a walk through the woodlands around Hackness Falls. We are already planning our next visit.

The property

This charming semi-detached barn conversion is quietly tucked round the corner from MashamÂ’s market square, a timeless town in Wensleydale.

Setch Barn has been imaginatively converted from its former farm byre origins to offer bright and modern accommodation for your Yorkshire Dales getaway.

This lovely, light-filled holiday home benefits from incredibly high ceilings, with the first floor twin bedroom bathed in light from the large lantern windows.

The ground floor has the luxury of underfloor heating, including the spacious wet room, which along with the ground floor king-size double bedroom, offers comfortable and convenient accommodation for all guests.

YouÂ’ll also find a sociable open plan living area, the perfect place to spend time together, while outside is a patio, along with two off road parking spaces and a shed for bikes - an excellent addition, as youÂ’re sure to discover wonderful cycling in this pretty part of the country.

Masham has a lovely medieval church and a Georgian town square, reputedly one of the largest in the county with a couple of cafes, pubs and shops.

Aficionados of fine ale will be all too aware that this is the home of the Black Sheep Brewery, where you can take a tour before treating yourself to a glass or two in the bar.

Masham is a superb base from which to explore the very best of The Dales with York, Leeds and Harrogate all easily reached within an hour.

Once a great Cistercian monastery, Jervaulx Abbey sits five miles to the north of the town and has won the hearts of visitors over the years; though ruined and roofless, itÂ’s an atmospheric spot well worth a visit.

The beautiful remains of popular Fountains Abbey and its stunning water gardens can be found ten miles to the south of Masham.

With over 800 acres of attractive grounds and ancient woodland, itÂ’s very easy to find that perfect picnic spot.

Following a day exploring Lower Wensleydale and beyond, return to your holiday cottage, relax on the patio and plans tomorrowÂ’s adventure!
