  • "We had a wonderfully relaxing stay at Speight Cottage."

Paul, Sam and their animals were extremely welcoming with just the right balance of being around and leaving us to enjoy the peace and quiet. Their welcome pack was a lovely touch. The cottage is well equipped with everything we needed, very clean & tidy. The outdoor space is perfect. Relaxing in the hot tub after a walk along the river to the village was wonderful. We would be more than happy to return to Speight Cottage.

The cottage was spotless, the setting idyllic and the views stunning. The owners Sam and Paul were so welcoming and the animals just finished it off, especially the the friendly dogs. I would highly recommend Speight Cottage to anyone whether you are wanting a walking holiday or somewhere just to wind down and relax.

Thank you for your wonderful feedback. We are delighted you enjoyed your stay and it was lovely to meet you and share our dogs with you. Property Owner

We were given such a warm welcome from Paul and Sam and their various animals! The cottage itself is very comfortable;(especially the king-sized bed... we had the best nights sleep in a long time!) complete with everything we needed for our 3 night break. The cottage is perfectly positioned with amazing views which we appreciated from the hot tub! With just a short walk along the river into Sedbergh we enjoyed more picturesque countryside on our way to a beautiful market town hosting fabulous pubs, bars and restaurants. We recommend it highly.

Snug and comfortable for two people. The hot tub was wonderful with beautiful scenic views over the fields and fells. Friendly owners. Generously gave us delicious eggs from their free range hens. They had five very friendly dogs. It was a joy to see them running around in the field below the cottage. The first weekend that spring had sprung. Highly recommended for a relaxing weekend break.

  • "We loved our two night’s stay at Speight cottage."

The obvious highlight is the outdoor hot tub which is fantastic, but the cottage itself is a wee gem. On arrival we were delighted to find an amazing array of goodies, handy if you had forgotten any basics (milk, bread, butter, eggs, bacon and more all acquired on their own farm or nearby). The cottage is well equipped and we appreciated the additional towels and bathrobes for the hot tub. The whole cottage is very warm and cosy thanks to the underfloor heating. The owners are lovely and friendly, it was an added bonus to be beside farm animals they have and we were so happy to be surrounded by beautiful nature. Great overall stay, thanks.

After having to rebook 3 times it was a relief to be able to get away for a few days. Speight Cottage was amazing as were the hosts. Set on a farm with 3 Highland Cows ( which was a bonus as I love Highland Cows), 3 donkeys and 4 gorgeous farm dogs with stunning views, it was perfect. The cottage was warm, clean and tidy and thoroughly comfortable with the delightful surprise of Scones, jam and cream, fresh baked bread, bacon and eggs from the 45 chickens on the farm on our arrival. The hot tub was amazing especially after long, chilly walks. I could go on and on about how amazing the cottage, location and hosts were. I would 100% recommend Speight Cottage and hopefully I’ll be visiting again.

  • "A beautifully converted barn in a stunning valley location."

The barn sits at the back of the owners farm house who are the perfect hosts friendly, knowledgeable and helpful, with their own four very friendly dogs, three highland cows, three donkeys and numerous chickens. From the patio / hot tub you have at stunning view over the farms field to the river and up the valley towards the fells. A short stroll over the field and you reach the river bank which at the time of writing was shallow. The footpath which runs across the farm parallel to the river gives access in each direction so you never even have to touch your car keys. You can turn right and a 25 minute flat river side walk you are into the village of Sedbergh which is a small town with a few nice pubs, Spar local and other amenities. Turn left and you can explore many miles of fell walking. We chose Speight Cottage because of the quiet location and the freedom it would give us with our dog Erik and we were not disappointed. As well as the enclosed gated garden, at the time of writing we had the use of two enclosed fields to exercise him although after a day walking along with all extra stimulation of sights and smells he was shattered. The owners Sam & Paul welcomed Erik as one of the family alway making a fuss of him. Happy dog, Happy Family, the best holiday .......

Beautiful location, great views of the river & countryside. Although on the same land as the owners’ house, it is private, and the owners leave you to enjoy yourselves. They are very welcoming and hospitable, and are available if necessary. Oh, and the hot tub is fantastic! Short walk (20-30 mins) into the village. Just be aware, 3 pubs in village. 1 does not let dogs in, another was closed most of the time, but the one open (Black Bull) is very good, with great food and beers. What we found when got to Scrogg House Farm exceeded all our expectations. The cottage was immaculate and clearly considerable care has gone into creating this first class accommodation. The kitchen was very well equipped with every utensil we could need for our long weekend provided. The living/dining room was an ideal size for two visitors and their dog, with log burner, new sofa, good tv and wifi. The bedroom had ample storage for clothes, with a hairdryer, mirrors and very comfortable large bed. Like the other rooms, the bathroom was decorated nicely. It was spacious, with a large powerful shower and towels/dressing gowns provided. Underfloor heating throughout ensured we were never cold despite some very inclement autumnal weather. On our arrival, we found scones with jam and cream waiting for us, with milk and bacon in the fridge and a fresh loaf and eggs generously supplied by Sam and Paul. The attention to detail and determination to impress their guests was not lost on us. The hot tub on the large south facing patio is the perfect vantage point to enjoy the incredible view over the fields, river and hills beyond. Having never experienced an outdoor hot tub before and it being October, we really didn’t expect to spend much time in it. How wrong we were! Other than sliding the cover off, slipping in and relaxing, there’s nothing more to do. Again, no expense has been spared as this was clearly a very good quality large hot tub, with bluetooth connection for your own music to play through its inbuilt speakers and an array of coloured lights. The temperature was perfect and we literally spent hours in it! Feeding Sam’s Highland cattle and donkeys and meeting the three dogs, hens and cockerel added to our enjoyment and we loved walking along the riverbank into Sedbergh. Undoubtedly, we’ll recommend Speight Cottage to our friends and family and we’re already looking forward to our next visit.

About the location

SEDBERGH

Kendal 12 miles; Hawes 15 miles.

Sedbergh (pronounced Sed-Ber), set at the foot of the dramatic and wild Howgill Fells, is an ancient market town in northern Dentdale. Sedbergh is situated just inside the Yorkshire Dales National Park and is only 12 miles from the Lake District National Park. The town, with its narrow streets, little shops, traditional pubs, famous school dating back to 1525 and its 12th century church, has an olde worlde atmosphere. Leading from Sedbergh is Dentdale, the jewel of the Yorkshire Dales with its rolling hills and dry stone walls, stretching 14 miles from the windswept moors below Whernside to the confluence of the Rivers Dee and Rawthey. At the centre of the dale is Dent, with its cobbled streets, which has existed since Norman times and nearby Dent railway station is on the renowned Settle-Carlisle railway line. There are three golf courses nearby, as well as tennis, riding, and fishing, and the area is a paradise for walkers, ramblers, runners and cyclists. This, together with the tranquillity of the surrounding valleys, the two National Parks and it being England's book town, makes an ideal year-round holiday destination.
