  • "Love this cottage."

It's lovely & warm & cosy. The sage oven is great & it's nice having a reasonable size freezer rather than just the ice box at the top of the fridge. Jonathan, the owner very responsive when I reported the hall light wasn't working correctly. This is our 3rd week here altogether & would have booked more weeks but unfortunately my partners job is finishing this week rather than the end of the month. It's much better than staying in just hotels. Hoping to be back if the job restarts!

  • "Small but cleverly designed and with high spec fixtures and fitting."

Immaculately clean and also perfectly situated within the village. The only minor criticism I would have is the lack of wifi which I think is usually seen as a 'standard' facility nowadays. Overall though, loved it and would strongly recommend.

  • "We booked last minute for a little break."

The cottage was lovely, everything that you could need and in a very quite area. Beautiful to relax in and a great area to explore. Some fantastic countryside. 2 lovely local pubs and a great chip shop. Butcher around the corner had a great selection of local foods. All in all a great place to stay.

  • "Very nice cottage."

Very helpful owner. Lovely village. It turned out that there as free parking in village carpark. Some written instructions about the heaters would be helpful.

  • "A perfect setting, ideally situated for the village & site-seeing."

Plenty of longer & shorter walks within the area. Whilst small, the space has been very well used. Good quality equipment. Middleton, for a small village, is well provided with shops, pubs, cafes, etc for your holiday needs. Worthy of a mention on its own is Raines Hardware store - a browser's (& buyer's) cavern of delights!

  • "Initially had a couple of problems, 1 was resolved by a neighbour."

The other problem took longer to find what was wrong and was resolved the day we left. The owner was most helpful. A teapot would have been useful, as would pyrex dishes to fit the microwave. Excellent views from the lounge, hence the name of the cottage.

  • "We were extremely comfortable in this lovely little cottage."

Clean and lightly equipped with good quality furniture and crockery etc Brilliant location in the heart of the village but tucked away in an extremely peaceful courtyard. It would have been nice if the storage heaters had been on when we arrived but once that was sorted it was soon nice and cosy. Thanks for a great week.

  • "The property exceeded our expectations in virtually every aspect."

Only one comment and that is that it would have been useful to know what went where with regard to the recycling.

  • "This was a lovely cottage."

Everything was as described. The stairway in the house was very steep. The cottage facilities were at hand. If you want quiet with a few shops then this is what you want.

  • "What a delightful cottage."

Cosy, clean, with all the mod cons to make the stay super pleasant (great shower, a kitchen corner that's equipped with the best appliances, good bed, comfy sofas). And I was welcomed with some fruit and biscuits and milk - super lovely touch. If you're a hiker you could not wish for a better ĺocation on the Pennine Way and the Teesdale way, with High Force and Low Force withing walking distance. There's plenty for bikers too although with there being no garden and no bike parking spots in the village that I saw, you'll have to put your bike away in your car each day, as I did. Bikers have plenty of routes to choose from too, though. Wonderful place - I hope to be back and I will recommend this cottage to all my friends.

  • "A nice comfortable little cottage in a quiet position in the centre of the very pleasant town of Middleton-in-Teesdale."

Directions to the property could be a little clearer. Having entered the short lane next to the hardware store you need to take the first walkway on the left and then turn right for the door to the cottage. Although there is no Wi-fi provided there is a strong BT Wi-fi signal. As BT broadband customers at home we were able to connect free via the BT Wi-fi app and it was quite sufficient for our needs (non-BT broadband customers can pay for this by clicking on BTWi-fi through Wi-fi connections on your device).

  • "More Freeview Channels and wi-fi would be great."

Otherwise a great holiday in a lovely well fitted cottage.

The property

Set in the beautiful North Pennines town of Middleton-on-Teesdale, Kirkcarrion Cottage is a charming mid-terrace stone cottage ideal for a couple looking to explore the excellent surrounding walking country.

The cottage is uniquely named after the local area as inspiration - Kirkcarrion is a copse of pine trees, surrounded by a stone wall, on a hilltop near Middleton-in-Teesdale; the trees were planted in the Victorian period and cover what is said to be the burial place of a Bronze Age chieftain.

The property features a reverse-level layout, beginning with an impressive super-king-size bed in the ground-floor bedroom, with zip/link features able to make it a twin room to suit your holiday.

Next to the bedroom is the shower room, a neat space with cleverly placed fittings including a walk-in shower and basin with storage beneath, as well as a washer/dryer.

Head upstairs and relax in the lovely open-plan living space beneath the vaulted apex ceiling, with exposed beams adding character and charm to the cottage.

Enjoy views out to the open and rolling fields beyond as you settle into your evening, making use of the kitchen space which has a Sage Smart cooker, two-ring induction hob, a microwave and a fridge/freezer.

A breakfast bar with stools offers dining for two, and the sitting area is home to a sofa, armchair and a wall-mounted small TV.

Dine out in Middleton-in-Teesdale at the Forresters Hotel and Restaurant, or try The Teesdale Hotel, with a local coffee shop, Café 1618 providing a place for afternoon tea after a hearty ramble.

Visit one of the most impressive waterfalls in England at High Force Waterfall which drops nearly 70 feet into a plunge pool, surrounded by a forest with walking paths, it makes a wonderful stop on a walk.

Follow the River Tees south to find Low Force Waterfall, the smaller sibling, coming down the valley back into Middleton-in-Teesdale.

Walkers will be delighted with the choice of peaks and fells to traverse, including Mickle Fell, High Cup Nick, Hilton Fell and Fendrith Hill.

Visit the castle that gives its name to the bustling market town of Barnard Castle, a 12th Century fortress with fantastic views over the Tees Gorge, it is home to a 'sensory garden' as well with many scented plants and tactile objects.
