Was made aware of light not working properly in kitchen, but not a major problem as took lamp in there. Would have been nice if there had been some wood for a fire on the first night.

  • "The photos of this cottage misrepresent the current state of the property and must have been taken some years ago."

The state of the shower room on the first floor should prevent this property from being listed in the first place, it is damp, dank and has mould on the ceiling and floor. The smaller bedroom has cracks and a hole in the plaster on the wall. The big bathroom now has a black shower curtain around it which is not in the pictures and is probably there because the other shower is not hygenic enough to use. The washer/dryer is in a tiny cupboard under the stairs with stuff in front of it, no photo of this, why is it not in the kitchen? The shower room has leaked and damaged ceiling on the way down the stairs. All of the woodwork is battered and grubby. Had i seen the true state of the property I would not have stayed there and it ruined our holiday.

We are sorry that you found this cottage not suitable for your stay, we are sorry you had not reached out to us during your stay, as we would have been happy to listen to your concerns and work to rectify them. We would love to welcome you back in the future. Lakelovers. Property Owner

We had a lovely time. The cottage is lovely. I took things like tea towels, kitchen foil, fairy liquid, kitchen roll, toilet roll when it was already provided. We enjoyed the walk to and from Windermere (approx 2 miles each way). Sunday morning we woke to a small deer in the garden just beautiful to see. We would definatley visit again and also recommend this property to friends/family very good value for money. Thankyou to the owner for letting us stay

  • "Lovely property perfect for our 3 night stay."

2 adults and 1 dog. Gardens front and back both have a nice seating area for when the weather is nice, we even spotted a deer one day out front of the property. Ideal location, 20 minutes walk into windermere, plenty places to eat, plenty that are dog friendly, and 40 minutes walk into bowness-on-windermere, great views of the lake and plenty places to eat including dog friendly. Around 5-10 minutes drive into Ambleside, although parking is expensive - im a northerner and hate parting with money. We did a number of different hikes in the area which were all great. We ate out so didn't need to use the kitchen equipment. Bed was comfy. I would recommend this property to others.

A set of drawers in the bedroom would have been useful and the towel radiator in the shower room needs fixing. With a bit more maintenance this could be a lovely place to stay. The kitchen/dining room is lovely and well equipped, although the ceiling needs a good clean at the apex. Sykes were unhelpful and do not provide a phone number for contact only a WhatsApp message service. The listing does not state whether towels are provided and for the week previous to going I tried to confirm if they were or not. I was eventually contacted 2 days after we’d arrived. • "Unfortunately this is a review of 2 halves, I cannot fault the fact the cottage was warm and clean, however that is where the good ends I am afraid."

My family and I have over the years rented many holiday cottages and this is the very first time we have arrived and there has not even been a pint of milk in the fridge and some tea and coffee as a welcome, in fact in the shower room there wasn't even any toilet roll! We don't expect a red carpet, but a few essentials when you have paid over £1000 for the week would be really appreciated. The write up for the cottage does say access is not easy, however I think this underplays the fact it is actually dangerous at this time of year, there is no lighting or handrail and no attempt had been made to clear the steps of the fallen leaves from the autumn leaving them incredibly slippery in places. The description of the sleeping arrangements also leave a lot to be desired, there are not 2 king size bedrooms, although yes I agree the second bedroom does have a king size bed in, it cannot be described as king size, there is little more than six inches to squeeze down on the window side of the bed with 2 disused pipes sticking out of the floor to fall over in the middle of the night, and with the bed in place you cannot open the wardrobe door more than a third of the way making access almost impossible. Whilst I appreciate that when on holiday not everyone wants to cook to much we were in the cottage for Christmas and we found the kitchen to be poorly equipped to prepare dinner. There are only 3 pans, and a couple of oven trays, and whilst there are plenty of pint size glasses there was only 4 wine glasses and 4 (One of which was chipped on the rim) smaller glasses that could be used for a whiskey or a G&T. It is a nice house in a great location for exploring the lakes, but the over riding feeling you come away with is that the owner just wants to take the money and put no real effort into maintenance or or thought into how you would actually live in/use the house. A shame as with a bit of effort it could be great.

Thank you for taking the time to provide this feedback. We are sorry that a toilet roll was missed in one of the bathrooms, this was an oversight by Lakelovers and not the owner. Thank you for highlighting the problems with the outdoor lighting, the owner is now working toward improving these. The maintenance is managed by Lakelovers and we are working toward improving this property. The owner is sorry that you were faced with these issues during your stay. The door handle falling off was the worse thing whilst I was in the bathroom, not surprised considering the screws were found rusting on the shelf, if I had been alone in the property, I could have been stuck in there a while. Almost slipped and broke my in the neck in the garden on a step was loose and nearly sent me flying. No explanation on the bins and weremtonput the rubbish, they provide you with a tiny white and black bag, that gets used within the first three days and all the neighbours have different coloured bins for recycling etc. We tried reading the manual left in the cottage was just dumped and put together, not in order and have the pages have just been taken and dumped in the front. I did try reading it to see were to put recycling etc nothing. Not forgetting the coffee table wheel was broken which can't be helped but the wheel just left snapped off and not taken away, feel like the owners could presume we did it, but I took photos to prove it wasn't due to time stamp etc. I rang Sykes to inform them of all this said I would receive a call back nothing.

    1. The house is extremely comfortable and very clean. The facilities I.e. cooking washing machine enclosed garden for the dogs were perfect ! The setting is beautiful with the woodland and the birds. 2. The access is very difficult for anyone with mobility problems. It is quite a distance from the car to the house. Anyone arriving in the dark would have a struggle as there isn’t a light. Finally and most puzzling is the bedding in the double bedroom. I understand the need to protect the mattress but the waterproof on the bed would keep out even “Storm Babet” ! In addition given the quality of the fittings in the house why on earth would you use such cheap bedding. The house deserves more. Please don’t spoil this lovely house for the want of good cotton bedding with NO STATIC. Overall I loved the house and would recommend with these caveats.

Thank you for your feed back, it was great to see your enjoyed your stay at Hunters Cottage with a 10/10 score. To reply to the points you have raised, there is a paragraph on the website about the access from the car park and as we move to the darker nights the cleaner will leave the outside light on. Mattress protectors are necessary but we can have look at changing that one. Thank you and hope to see you again soon. The Owner Relation Team. Property Owner

A great central location to explore the area. The property itself has a nice layout with an extension providing a great space for the kitchen diner, perfect for the family get away. Some observations without being overly critical are that there is some minor maintenance required , loose tap and radiator in the upstairs shower room and smell of a possible water leak as smells musty after the first day using the shower. The windows require regular cleaning outside, in fact i personally cleaned the small double doors as they were awful once the sun shone. Garden would need regular upkeep with grass cut and bushes trimmed. Overall we were satisfied with our stay and would potentially book again in the future.

  • "We have just had a long weekend at Hunters Cottage (two couples and two dogs)."

There are many positives as well as a few suggested areas for improvement. The kitchen/diner was very bright, spacious and well equipped. We loved the underfloor heating when it was on but didn't really know how/when it was coming on so it was a bit random. We also loved the breakfast bar, the giant table and access to the back garden for the dogs. Nice clean and big enough fridge/freezer for our needs, dishwasher was good to have as the sink is only tiny. Areas for improvement in the part of the house include: 1. More bin bags and dishwasher tablets please - we were there for 3 nights and spent a lot of time in the house in the evenings so needed more of these. 2. Security light for the back garden would be a very useful addition for letting dogs out at night - we brought our own bright torches (the torches provided were no good at all when it was really dark). Also the garden is 'enclosed' but the mesh fencing surrounding and separating got next doors garden was a bit patchy and our dog got into the neighbouring garden so we had to fashion some make shift blockages ourselves to prevent this happening. We didn't let the dogs in the front garden as we were too nervous that they would escape through similar patchy fencing. On to the rest of the house. Lovely comfy lounge with smart TV which was great for us to access Netflix etc. Log burner was good but didn't match the instructions in the folder (more on that later) - it looks like the instructions are for a different log burner, maybe a previous one? Large sofas were great for our party and very comfy. Areas for improvement in the part of the house include: 1. Low hanging central glass lamp shade proved to be a hazard for our 6 foot 5 son who caught his head on it several times! 2. Could perhaps do with another side lamp? 3. Glass coffee table had broken wheel fixture when we arrived - the cover off one of the wheels was lying on the floor and couldn't be re-attached - it definitely wasn't us who broke it! The 'snug' and downstairs loo area - we didn't use the snug at all but did find the downstairs loo very handy. I can imagine some families might use the snug but for us it was a wasted space - we all said how it might be used as a 3rd bedroom space perhaps with a sofa bed? Upstairs bedrooms. Great master bedroom with lots of space, slightly 'snug' second bedroom which was a bit of a squeeze when luggage and belongings were in it with the guests. Couldn't really get into the cupboard very easily. Areas for improvement in the part of the house include: 1. Master bedroom has not dressing table so have to stand to dry hair etc using mirror on the wall - would be useful to maybe add a tall stool to this room if no room for dressing table. 2. Also needs a bedside lamp on both bedside tables in master bedroom - there is only one. 3. Could also do with proper curtains across whole of master bedroom window - roller blind on middle portion not great when the sun comes up in the morning. Upstairs bathrooms. Large bathroom is lovely and the bath is great once you know how to run the water to keep it hot. Impossible to use the shower in here though as the shower curtain is set up so weirdly that you can't enclose the bath to stop water escaping down the back. Not sure what can be done about that. Small shower room - okay but a bot if a squeeze and the shower curtain is so far into the shower that it's impossible to shower without it sticking to you which is not very pleasant at all. Water splashes all over floor when using it too so need to constantly mop up after people have used it. Areas for improvement in the part of the house include: 1. Reconfigure shower curtain arrangement in large bathroom and shower room. 2. Provide bathmat for large bathroom - there was only one in the shower room. 3. Provide more than one toilet roll per bathroom for a long weekend stay for four people!!!!! Overall issues. 1. Information folder needs a good tidy up and refresh. 2. Please can you give some information on the heating for the main part of the house - only by luck did we work out how to out heating on, we were freezing for the first day and night. 3. Hand rail at steep steps to front door are lose and unsafe - need fixing. 4. Maybe better signage for Number 5 - not easy to spot on arrival. especially in the dark. Overall positives: Very clean and homely cottage, great location, well equipped. We would definitely stay again - all of our comments are just suggested 'tweaks' to make it completely perfect!

  • "Starting with the positives - location is great, short walk to Windermere and walks, bus stop nearby."

Beds very comfy. Two bathrooms and downstairs loo. Utility area. Nice decor with spacious lounge and snug. Two TVs that worked. Kitchen is well equipped (although dishwasher tablet flap didn't always work), good size with underfloor heating so we spent most time in here. Visit didn't start well as there were no instructions about the heating system, food from previous occupants was found in a cupboard, and the Christmas decorations were still in the snug creating a hazard for my dog. Sykes got the decorations removed and tried to sort out the heating but we ended up using the plug-in heaters in the old part as the heating came on at odd times (probably due to previous occupants tinkering?). I feel the steps to the main door are too steep and small, especially when carrying items. It's a long uphill walk from the parking area which was muddy and uneven. Thankfully it didn't rain when we were loading/unloading. The shower in the small bathroom needs checking as the temperature fluctuated and was extremely hot on occasions. Welcome pack was basic. No recycling facility. I'd stay again in good weather and hope this feedback facilitates improvements for others to enjoy.

Thank you fro your feedback on your stay at Hunters Cottage. We were glad to see you had a great holiday. Regarding the points mentioned, please accept our apologies,as Lakes Cottage Holidays manage Hunters Cottage for the owners. The heating, it seems that the main controls, that would not normally be used, had been altered incorrectly. I am glad we were able to communicate this to you, and we will be making some improved instructions for future users. Arrangements had been made for the cleaner to collect the decorations, so we do apologise they were still there and the cleaner also sends her sincere apologies about the food in the cupboard also, she had missed this. Hunters Cottage is serviced by a commercial waste collection, where everything is recycled at the depot. There should be a sign in the property and on the bin explaining this, however, we will re-do the sign as it appears to have gone missing. We try to explain about the access to the property and you can also approach Hunters Cottage from the main road above. We have had our Compliance Manager visit about the steps and whilst they are within regulations, the owners have added a hand rail to make it easier. The kitchen area was fabulous. Beds comfortable, plenty of hot water and very cosy. Great location. Spacious for two couples, we slept well and enjoyed being there when weather was bad. Christmas decorations were a lovely touch, thank you. A few points, we arrived with heavy rain at 4.45 at night, the path was slippy and torches provided were wholly inadequate. The light should be left on at least. The path in winter is an accident waiting to happen and a decent flood light and clearing of the leaves on the path would help hugely. It was also not clear which house it was and took us ages to find the ‘large’ sign indicating no 5 , this was small and hard to find. Invest in proper bedding, the duvet covers and pillow slips are inferior quality. Hotel quality would improve this and make the bedroom feel more luxurious. Had a great stay and would return, we appreciate all the little touches provided and the fully equipped kitchen.

  • "We stayed at Hunters Cottage for Xmas and it was lovely."

We were 2 adults, 2 older children and 2 dogs. I would definitely recommend the property for a family break however there are some things to be mindful of which has stopped us booking it for Xmas again next year. First of all, access to the property is up a fairly long steep bank of uneven gravel and wood stairs. We couldn’t arrive till after 4pm which meant it was pitch black on our arrival. Unfortunately I ended up tripping over one of the wooden steps because I couldn’t see and hit my leg pretty hard as I fell. Just a fairly large bruise but still not the best way to arrive to your holiday home! Once inside we did find torches but these were not at all bright and trying to hold them while carrying in our cases and Xmas pressies was a bit of a nightmare. We noticed that the neighbours have installed security lights and it would be great if this property owner did the same as this would make it much safer for people arriving in the dark. The final steps to the door are slippy stone and quite easy to misplace your footing. I note that a previous review identified this and the owner was supposed to have installed a handrail to make this safer but this has not been done as suggested. There is rear access to the property through the kitchen to the main A road which might have been a little easier but it is still via sloping walkways and in the dark, plus there were cars parked there for the duration of our stay so we weren’t able to park there to unload on this occasion. It would be helpful to have a security light to the rear garden as well for when letting the dogs out and when returning to the property at night. We fortunately had a head torch which once we realised we needed it we were grateful to have, but the property owner could make the experience much easier and safer by installing simple security lights. Another thing to note about the back garden is that it leads to a walkway to the main A road. This is useful for walking into town, but if you have young children the gate is on a simple latch only, so just something to be mindful of. Apart from these issues ( which are less of an issue if you know to have a good torch, or you arrive during daylight) the property was one of the nicest we have stayed in for Xmas. The kitchen diner is really lovely, warm and homely with under floor heating. The TV in the kitchen was a bonus as it meant the kids and adults could watch different things. The kitchen was well equipped and everything worked well although the knives were completely blunt so maybe take your own if you like to cook. We liked the fact the washer dryer is in the cupboard under the stairs as this meant you didn’t have to listen to it in the kitchen. Having a dryer was also great. It is nice that there is a large island to eat at as well as a large table so you can choose to eat breakfast or meals more informally as a family, but then we had a nice big table to have our Xmas day meal at. The beds are comfortable and the bedding was warm and soft. The smaller bedroom has a cupboard but it is a little difficult to access because the door opens into the bed but it was still useful and it didn’t bother us. The master bedroom has a large built in wardrobe which was great. We liked the fact that there are 2 bathrooms upstairs, a shower room and a bathroom with a lovely large bath and both have their own toilets which is handy. The bath unfortunately wasn’t great as there wasn’t enough hot water, so that was a shame as the bath is massive and would be lovely to relax in if the water wasn’t tepid! There is also a small bathroom downstairs next to the snug which meant not having to go upstairs to the loo. There is a main lounge with 2 large sofas so we were all able to spread out and be comfy, and the log burner was lovely, though it hadn’t been cleaned out when we arrived. There were only enough logs for one fire but we had expected that and brought our own so just be aware. The TV is a really good size and the WiFi was excellent. In addition to the main lounge there is a snug with another large sofa. We found this great as an alternative place to sit and read a book or play board games with the kids. The gardens are lovely and well established and it was lovely to see lots of birds everyday. As we visited during a rainy week in December we didn’t spend anytime in the gardens but there are tables and chairs to both the front and rear and I can imagine they would be lovely to sit at on a nice day. The rear garden off the kitchen is next to the A road though the large wall helps to reduce the road noise. We found inside the property we couldn’t hear the road noise at all and the bedrooms are all on the other side of the house so were nice and quiet. There was only 1 wheelie bin and no separate bin for recycling which meant we ended up bringing some of this home with us as the bin was full by the end of our stay. A separate recycling bin would be helpful. The parking was plentiful for the property and it is a fairly easy walk to the town which had lovely dog friendly places to eat and drink. We would recommend Brown Sugar. There is a pub nearby called the Sun Inn which was run down and pretty much empty so would avoid that. There is a file with information in it but this was really disorganised and could do with being clearer. Overall, we had a lovely comfortable stay and would consider staying again in future but the property owner could make arrival and access a little easier and safer for guests.

  • "The cottage was lovely and nicely furnished, however when we arrived the bank of lights above kettle and microwave where out."

Then on the Sunday evening none of the lights would come on. Thankfully we had a torch. It might be helpful to have some sort of rail going up the stairs as I felt stairs a bit steep. We couldn't find a teapot! Also how about a list of contacts, chemist, caretaker etc. Once again I would like to say that the cottage is lovely and in a great location.

Thank you very much for your feedback and reporting the issues upon your departure. I can confirm that the lights have since been fixed. We do have out of hours emergency contact details both on your booking confirmation and in the welcome folder in the property. I am please to say we are adding a teapot to the property also! We look forward to hopefully seeing you again. Property Owner

  • "Fabulous house and location."

The directions are not clear though (couldn’t see a wooden bin store) and as we arrived after dark we really struggled to find the house so lighting and clearer numbering would help. That said now we know which house it is we would rebook it, such a well equipped house! Thank you

Thank you for your feedback, we are sorry you couldn't find the bin during your stay. Hunter's Cottage does have a designated bin for the property although it is unlabelled. We will ensure that the bin is labelled up to make it more obvious for future guests. Property Owner

Maybe need to be mindful of the steps up to the cottage. There’s front snd rear access snd we found the front access from the main road easier for taking your gear in and out. Very comfy all round.

It is located in a peaceful wooded spot, excellently located to visit pretty much everywhere in Cumbria. We also liked the fact that we could walk to the centre of Windermere. We would have no hesitation in recommending to our friends.
