  • "Needs some T."

L.C . Indeed inside and especially out side , the place could be a lot nicer if only this was done, otherwise all good , except for new pillows needed, very lumpy, very quiet area no problem with parking my car either, good heating soon warm up the house, I had a good week there myself, also the brook running down over the rocks was making a very relaxing sound, great, Big towns not to far away, the popular Conwy is about 30 miles, and you got Porthmadog x Bettws y coed very popular indeed with visitors , plenty of places to walk and visit. Some nice pubs in the area for food and drink as well. I visited quite a few of them . Happy holidays Guys, best wishes Hywel the Welsh guy,

  • "Love Wales but cottage needs some TLC."

I travel to wales every year for holidays and hiking in the Snowdon area. We stay in many areas and cottages. This cottage location is great and I generally dont want to give to much negativity on the property but it really does need some TLC and a really good clean. Overall this cootage could get 5 stars everytime with a good deep clean to get it upto standard, some new comfortable mattresses for the beds as they are very uncomfortable and get a gardener in to sort out what could be a magical spot that is covered with moss and overgrown ivy. Thats all it really needs to get it upto standard and this place could be a real winner. We did enjoy our stay here and are not looking for the perfect cottage but left a day early due to the above.

Other than that the cottage is in a beautiful location and great for touring and hiking in the Snowdonia National Park.

  • "On arrival the cottage looked run down and the "bush" in front was overgrown and blocking the whole window."

The pile of overflowing bins was offputting and the dumped microwave in the garden was unsightly. Once inside we felt better as overall the property is well laid out, however we had to bleach the shower due to mould and my partner spent a fair while removing dusty cobwebs. The kitchen was very greasy and the curtains all needed a good wash. There was black mould coming through just about everywhere- the place really needs a good paint through. The worst thing however was my partner woke up with fresh bug bites every morning - I received one or 2 myself. We had to clean dog hair from the sofa. All in all it was not a great stay and we're glad to be able to get out every day in to fresh air. The cottage is in a lovely location, such a shame the condition it's in let's it down. We have photos if any of this needs backing up.

The cooking equipment is of poor quality, so not great if thats your thing. Good draw on the woodburner, so fire her up without smoking yourself out. Slight taint of dog when we arrived, which, as a cat, makes me uncomfortable, but that faded over the 2 weeks. Owner generous in allowing access to boiler controls

  • "Had a lovely stay in this cottage but beds weren't comfortable for any of us."

My daughter didn't sleep well at all in the top bunk. Cottage itself wasn't very clean. There was a lot of dust everywhere. There was an awful lot of dust down the side of the bunk beds mattresses.I only noticed this as the mattresses didn't quite meet the frame and I put on the light frame for my daughter,I didn't go out my way to look. The quilt in the main room wasn't big enough for the bed, so either myself or my hubby went without .Some of the kitchen equipment was left dirty.Ie spoons a few knives,a glass from cupboard and a few dinner plates .The front door was extremely difficult to open and close .The lounge rug underneath table was very bitty ,needed a good hoover round. We also couldn't get parked outside the cottage , unfortunately as the next door cottage was occupied,so we had to resort to the car park, which is quite a way when you are a family of four with luggage and food shopping.Lovely little location by the waterfall/stream,which I loved.Overall it was a very wet (as it rains ALL the time in Blenau ffestiniog) uncomfortable stay In a cottage that needs an update and a clean, unfortunately.

Dear Mrs, I regret very much that you had found the cottage in an intolerable condition. We have employed a professional cleaning agency that Sykes Cottages themselves had chosen for us. We live in Germany and so don't have actual control on how this agency works. Between 2010 and mid 2023 we had a private cleaner who never gave a reason for such a complaint, but she has retired now. We apologise that the property was not up to your standards but we will certainly follow up on your comments to ensure our cottage is held to a higher standard. Property Owner

Wales, the cottage is in a quiet spot just off the main street. There are walks from door up into the hills and quarries above the town as well as in other directions. The river beside the kitchen door is quite a sight (and sound) when in full flow!

Dear Sir, thank you very much for your very positive comment. It will help to reach the required number of rented nights to stay as a small business and to avoid the 100% surcharge on council tax (£ 400 per month, what could be a reason to sell the cottage) Property Owner

..peaceful and pleasant...we loved our stay and would book again.. we've given it a 4 out of 5 only because it could do with a fresh coat of paint, maybe new mattress in double room..some updating here and there, otherwise it would be top marks. Highly recommended. Great location.

Dear Sir Thank you for your very positive comment. Due to the rising costs for electricity and gas and the 100% surcharge on council tax, we did not know whether we could keep our cottage the coming years and did not invest in maintenance (painting and furniture). Thanks to our guests like you, we reached the required number of rented nights for a small business with no council tax. I promise you, that the cottage will show better conditions next year. When i went to ask the main caretaker for advice, the man who answered was nothing but rude, ignorant and had the littlest knowledge about the house. I thought as i was already on the phone, i could mention other issues we had. One of them being that most if not all of the kitchen appliances, towels, and utensils had food stains and remains on them. This man then continued to insult me over the phone saying that i am “being unreasonable and am complaining for the sake of it” when i could provide photo proof of the state of the kitchen. He continued to insult me over the phone, i have written a review in the review book in the house but am almost certain that he will trash it. Rudest service i have ever experienced, most ignorant man i have spoken too and i hope this gets fixed because it is a huge issue. The location was lovely however the poor management and hygiene makes this stay a 0/10 in my books. For anybody who seeks a cute, comfortable cottage, i would never recommend this cottage. I wish the app would let me rate zero stars. Thank you and i hope this gets fixed for the future and your caretakers get handled.

Dear Mrs My caretakers send me a description of the situation a bit different to your complaint. Regarding the warm weather, you would not have been freezing the whole week after the caretaker told you how to manage the thermostat. The complete heating system has been serviced in June and should have been fully in function. The man who answered you, is a welsh speaker. So it may be, that his slang sounded not so polite in your ears. If you did detect some stains on the kitchen appliances and towels, please send me your fotos and I will see, whether it's worth a compensation. In all, I think your comment and the warning of coming guests was a bit unfair. The Owner Property Owner

  • "This charming cottage oozed coziness and character."

It is the perfect base from which to explore the local town, countryside and wider region. Inside, as well as being welcoming and warm, it was well equipped with the owners thoughtfully anticipating anything you might need to make your stay go smoothly (hair-dryer, coffee-maker for example), and providing a folder full of useful info. I slept in the 'blue elephant' room and had the best night's sleep for about a year, the bed was super comfy. We spent a few enjoyable evenings on front of the (huge!) log fire too in the living room. Outside, it is located next to a waterfall, which was enchanting, and only a few minutes walk up the lane at the back takes you into remote countryside for excellent explorations of the slate and granite hills behind. It is also only about 10 mins or so from the centre of town on foot, handy for local shops and provisions. It's the perfect warm, cosy and lovely place to re-charge and chill out :-)

The parking is very tight, if unfortunately like us experienced the neighbouring house has two cars you will really struggle to park. The kitchen has very limited equipment (no baking trays) so if you think you need it you’re best taking it. Those are the only negatives, it’s a comfy, clean and warm cottage. The cottage was very clean on arrival and well equipped with kitchen utensils. There is also a new sofa and chair in the lounge which were very comfortable, it would be useful to update the listing to reflect this. The parking is challenging as the road is very narrow and lots of cars. The only negative I have is that on the last day, due to COVID, we had to strip the beds. This revealed a duvet that really needed a wash or replacing. This would be easily rectified I hope it is soon.

A great base for exploring Snowdonia. In the long-term, the owner needs to CONTINUE to upgrade the basic structure....for example, the bathroom has already been completely modernised, the main bedroom is fine and the kitchen is ok.....but the doors and windows are old and the varnish throughout is in need of refreshment, while the cream-coloured stair carpet shows foot tracks up to the toilet and the futon is very "tired". Fine overall and does sleep FIVE (and takes one dog)....but if your party is just TWO adults, go for next door at no1 Waterloo Cottage which has been more upgraded than no 2!

It was clean and tidy (although we couldn't fit anything in the outside bins - due to them being very full). I think this was more about the refuse collection than anything else! one small observation was that the decoration was very tired and in need of a bit of a tidy! but that wouldn't really stop us from recommending the cottage - but I would say that parking was quite difficult and felt that needs to be highlighted more - the very narrow road didn't allow for other vehicles to pass by easily and we were always expecting a lost mirror or scratch down the side of the car, having said that it came away unscathed thankfully.

However it’s tired. The bedding is old, really old. The pillows are thin, stained and flat. The quilts are not much thicker than a blanket and the one on the lower bunk barely fits. The mattress in the master nearly finished my back off. The kitchen is grubby. The extractor fan is mucky and has greasy strands hanging off the filter. I scrubbed the cooker area and the yellow grease I got off was appalling. The fridge and oven were clean. There are picnic items in a bag behind the back door the layer of dust in the bag makes them unusable. The kitchen is very cluttered not much space to store food. The living room has an old futon that isn’t very comfortable and two strange office type chairs. It was relatively clean but dusty in areas. The bathroom was clean except marks on floor and hand marks on door which look black and grubby. Bedrooms clean except odd dusty bits and a cobweb on curtain behind bed. I just think some new bedding and a deep clean would make this cottage perfect. We did love the cottage it has charm and character but I don’t go on holiday to clean and I expect decent beds/bedding. There are reviews in the guestbook dating back years complaint about the same as me yet nothing improves. We won’t be using this cottages again but we have rebooked with Sykes for August as we did enjoy the holiday and the cottage was beautiful just these niggly bits. We have booked a more expert properly next time so maybe it’s a case of you get what you pay for. Did make me wonder though.... how old is that bedding?

The property

Blaenau Ffestiniog 1.1 miles.

Dating from the 1850s, this traditional, stone-built, semi-detached cottage is tucked away from busy passing traffic, enjoying a quiet location next to a natural flowing hillside river, and close to the historic slate mining town of Blaenau Ffestiniog in the heart of the Snowdonia National Park.

This cosy cottage is an ideal base for touring the Snowdonia National Park and provides comfortable holiday accommodation for a couple, friends or a family.

The cottage is adjacent to another cottage of historic interest, the former home of the celebrated poet John Cowper Powys.

Retaining some attractive original features and attributes, traditionally decorated in a homely style, this delightful cottage is full of charm and character, exposed stone, ledge and brace doors and an impressive inglenook fireplace houses a woodburner in the cosy sitting room, making it lovely and snug in the evenings during the cooler months, especially after a day on the mountains.

Towards the rear of the cottage is the kitchen, well-equipped and with a dining area, and the patio door takes you out to the patio area with picnic table, ideal for alfresco dining or early morning coffee.

Upstairs, you’ll find a cosy triple bunks room with a distant view of the Moelwyn mountains, and a well-appointed double room, where the relaxing sound of the running river makes that morning cuppa in bed a real treat!

Completing the cottage is a shower room with a rain shower.

Includes a patio area with a picnic bench area overlooking the tumbling waters of Afon Du Bach, quite impressive after a heavy rainfall. Steep stone steps lead up to a sun deck, which is a wonderful peaceful place to reflect and enjoy a glass of wine, relaxing to the sound of the river, and enjoying a sunny aspect which rounds off a day walking on the mountains perfectly.

There are numerous walks from the cottage and many hidden lakes waiting to be discovered with stunning views of Snowdonia to enjoy.

As well as a range of independent shops, tea rooms, cafes and restaurants, Blaenau Ffestiniog has so much more to offer.

There is something for everyone, whether you are seeking thrills at Zip World Titan (the largest zip zone in Europe), Zip World Caverns and Bounce Below (deep mine zip wires and the largest underground system of trampolines in the world!) or Antur Stiniogs world-class downhill tracks and trails.

For a more sedate day, visit Llechwedd Slate Caverns or venture on a journey on the Ffestiniog railway which takes you to Porthmadog and connects to the Welsh Highland railway for a truly unique experience.

Miles and miles of sandy beaches and historic castles are all within easy reach.

The Italianate village of Portmeirion is 20 minutes' away and your holiday won’t be complete without a visit to Snowdon.

Enjoy the drive and experience the majestic beauty of the Ogwen valley to Capel Curig and Llanberis on the way.

With Snowdonia on the doorstep, and Anglesey and the Llyn Peninsula also within easy reach, this is a perfect cottage for a relaxing break, whatever the time of year.
