  • "Beautiful cottage and a great welcome pack."

The only downside was the midges in the garden. I suggest to take plenty of repellent with you. Everything else was spot on the birds and the mice in the garden were amazing to watch and overall our stay was brilliant.

  • "Lovely cottage, peaceful location, perfect for getting away from it all, especially if you have dogs with the enclosed garden."

The owner Helen is so thoughtful, we had a lovely welcome pack and also a text when we were on the way to warn of a road closure. Very cosy and comfortable with a log burner in the lounge. There were also treats for the doggos! So many species of birds in the garden, with helpful books provided to identify them. There is also a telescope provided to view the stars at night. Ideally located for Kielder Water and walks. Certainly one of the best cottages we have stayed in.

  • "We have had a wonderful week with our dog Ruby."

It was bitterly cold which meant we had plenty of dark clear skies to see the millions of stars. We had to buy extra fuel for the stove! We loved the silence as we took walks following the public footpaths. Its vital that you keep your dog on a stretch lead as there are so many sheep, rabbit and we also saw deer. The bedding and towels were so fresh and clean. On arrival there were plenty of goodies which were much appreciated, even something for Ruby .

  • "Our second stay at Old Hall Cottage and just like our last visit, we found the cottage to be everything that we wanted."

It is situated in a beautiful unspoilt area of Northumberland close to Kielder Water & Forest and is so peaceful. Amazing variety of birds can be seen daily at the feeders right outside the kitchen window. We chose the cottage because both our dogs hate fireworks and I can report that we never heard or saw a single one! The owner has thought of everything that you could possibly need and the welcome pack is a nice touch. Double bed is probably the best we have ever slept on in a holiday let. Maybe not next year, but we would certainly return in the future. The weather worsened as the week went on but the cottage was warm on arrival and once you've mastered the log burner is really quite cosy.

Tesco managed to find us with our delivery thank goodness. Not far from Kilder so ideal for dog walkers and cyclists. Fenced in so safe for dogs . Lovely to hear the stream running behind and down the side of the garden, apart from that it was extremely peaceful. Log burner was so cosy and threw out lots of heat , very welcoming on the chilly evenings . Scottish border no far so perfect for a day trip . Only problem we had was the Wi-fi had been turned off . We didn’t realise till of 2nd to last day . Worth checking.

The owner provided a lot more extras than we've ever had in any cottage, both for us and for our dog - who, incidentally, was much more relaxed on this holiday than she normally is. The weather was unseasonably wet and cold and the central heating is turned off in the summer but we had the wood burner and there were portable heaters had we needed them. The wonderful thing about the cottage is the numbers of birds on the feeders just outside the kitchen window: siskins, sparrows, finches, titmice and woodpeckers. The owner provides cartons of seed to buy and it was worth it just to see the clouds of birds descend and observe them closely. It made our holiday!

Lovely comfy cottage with a good secure garden, and very peaceful and relaxing. The highlight for me was feeding and watching the birds from the kitchen window. I counted 17 different species in the garden! The road to and from the cottage is very narrow so fingers crossed on not meeting another vehicle but this just added to its charm. The whole area is beautiful with stunning scenery and many challenging walks. National Trust membership is recommended! I would definitely recommend a stay here. Thankyou Helen for all the goodies, both human and doggy, you are very thoughtful, and for making our weeks stay even better than we’d hoped. Very Highly recommend a stay here! Our dog liked the enclosed garden, BUT the side wall in front of the greenhouse is too low to be effective for an energetic dog. Twice I stopped our Springer jumping over into the field next door. Thereafter we had always to be on our guard! Thankfully there were no sheep there during our stay. A wire fence on top would probably suffice to secure. Regretfully the WiFi at the cottage was poor, cutting out and buffering at many odd times day or night on a daily basis. Most annoying.

  • "A lovely and well equipped cottage with a friendly feel and great wildlife."

The rooms are spacious, with comfortable beds and sofas. You might have to slant to one side when upstairs and in the bathroom, but it all makes for the beauty of this quirky place. As stated this property is isolated and it is very isolated as far as pubs and shops go. Because the access is down the single track lane with many pot holes, the 2 miles to a shop feels like 5. We also visited when the pubs had not fully opened due to Covid restrictions, so eating out was not possible locally and we couldn't find anywhere doing takeaway. Fortunately we went prepared for this and it is very easy to prepare meals in the well equipped kitchen. We would definitely recommend taking some food with you. The welcome pack was lovely with scones, bread, milk and butter and the wine a lovely treat too. The dogs loved the enclosed garden, which is very safe for them to explore. The only thing missing was an area to sit and enjoy the wildlife or read outside (not that we had the weather to do that, but it was noticeable). The picnic table is in a shaded area away from the lovely views. Sometimes you want to sit back and relax in a chair with the views or a book or a glass of something, not sit forwards at that type of table. A minor point, but we would have missed this opportunity given better weather.

  • "Very peaceful location once you've negotiated the single track road."

The owners have provided everything you would need, even treats for the dogs and good welcome pack. The only things which let it down are the heating system, which is a combination of storage heaters and a multi fuel stove. A conventional boiler would make life easier, and the downstairs shower needs a proper enclosure, shower curtains are not nice.

About the location

Bellingham 9 miles; Newcastleton 24.5 miles; Carlisle 49 miles.

The delightful village of Falstone lies at the foot of Kielder Water, the largest man-made lake in Northern Europe, and on the edge of Kielder Forest, the largest forest in Northern Europe. With probably the best ‘dark skies’ in England, and one of the most tranquil places in rural England, the area is ideal for outdoor activities. There are many signed walking paths through the forest, with the 26 mile Lakeside Way around the lake, as well as higher level fell walks. There are cycle tracks with different routes to suit a variety of abilities, plus fishing and an abundance of wildlife in the area, with red squirrel, roe deer and many bird species, including the Osprey. Hadrian's Wall is an easy drive away and there are many castles and fortified houses in the area, reminders from the times when the “Border Reivers” raided the Anglo-Scottish border. National Trust properties, including Wallington Hall and Cragside are also just a scenic drive away from this pretty village.
