  • "Great house and wonderful location The house was lovely and clean but there was a little damp in patches."

The kitchen was great and had everything needed for the week. The welcome basket was a nice surprise and very welcomed. Towels also provided for the hot tub as well which is great. Some people mentioned the TV being a bit difficult but we didn’t watch any and listened to music all week so again no issue for us. Thanks for a lovely stay well deffo be back.

Great location for town and the facilities in the Porthole were excellent. (Especially the coffee machine). Lovely and clean and Andrea did a great job showing us around and keeping in touch. The hot tub was a great Addition to the property. I would highly recommend a stay at the Porthole. 10/10 well done

  • "Beautifully appointed and presented property, close to the heart of Holmfirth."

We had a family Xmas break there and the nine of us — and a dog — thorougly enjoyed ourselves. We were greated with a warm welcome and our comfort was clearly a high priortity — our hosts were attentive to any needs whilst not being intrusive. The children, even in the midst of winter, put the hot tub as their favourite feature.

  • "Generally this is good accommodation in a convenient location for the town centre."

It’s a lovely little house with four bedrooms, a well kitted kitchen and small dining area plus a nice little garden and hot tub. Some downsides were disappointing though… - the TV reception is awful. Can only get the two main BBC channels, no ITV and barely any freeview channels. To many people this might not matter if you’re happy to sit with a book or out a lot. However we were staying with older parents who were very keen to watch their favourite TV shows whilst we were out elsewhere, and shows we’d planned to watch together we couldn’t. We’d also planned to watch specific sports events which we couldn’t so needed to go out searching for bars showing it. I reported this on day one but no comment was given and nothing fixed so I assume it’s a regular problem. - the internet seemed a bit temperamental, it didn’t work for the first 24hrs or so, which was annoying as two of us are self employed and couldn’t do our work/dial into meetings. Given the tv situation it also prevented us watching anything digitally. - there were a lot of spindley spiders around in many of the rooms when we arrived which suggested there hadn’t been any cleaning with feather dusters to get corners etc. a few of our party hate spiders so this was a bit of a problem! - the dining room is pretty small and was a struggle to fit six people round a table comfortably, and there’s only two stools at the breakfast bar, so a lot of us were left stood leaning against worktops a lot. Similarly the lounge is homely and comfy but once you have more than 4-5 people it becomes a bit of a squeeze. I’d say with a few really minor improvements this would go from 3 to 4-5 star, it feels a shame such a nice property was let down by really basic things.

Thank you for your feedback. The Porthole is surrounded by trees. FreeView is a struggle and we do not advertise as having FreeView. There are apps such as BBC iPlayer to watch live shows. The WiFi is usually very good, and I apologise it was temperamental during your stay. This could have been fixed if we had been made aware. The cleaning team has now been made aware, and we will ensure all cobwebs and cleanliness are dealt with. We will also order some extra chairs for the breakfast bar. Property Owner

  • "We spent a wonderful weekend at The Porthole as a group of friends."

Andrea kept us well informed with some great recommendations for places to eat locally and we had a lovely welcome basket. Porthole has a well equipped kitchen & homely features with a selection of fun board games, which we enjoyed. Location is also a short walk from town where there are lots of lovely places to eat & drink, especially Harvey’s, which was fabulous! Overall, we couldn’t fault the accommodation or host as both were great, very happy customers!

  • "Stunning. This house was just beautiful."

We stayed with my children, gram babies and a dog. Everything is really fantastic quality. From the electric appliances (we like to cook) from the comfy beds to the towels. It was spotless as well. There was a suggestion box but we couldn’t think of a thing to add because we were so pleased. Can’t wait to book again

The house was so lovely and great location, minutes walk down into the town. The kitchen came equipped with absolutely every utensils you can think of along with a built in coffee machine and huge American fridge/freezer. The house was spotless, well kept and looked after. Plenty of parking - we parked 3 cars on the private drive and there is Space for cars outside the house too if needed. The outdoor decking area with hot tub we loved! Even managed to sit out in the sunshine Saturday afternoon on the sun loungers next to the hot tub. Thank you ! We will definitely be returning.

It was just about large enough to house 10 of us at an affordable price fo a lovely weekend. Andrea was very accommodating and very helpful , the property has everything you would need. There are a few minor improvements including outside lighting for use of the hot tub at this time of year, and an absorbent mat by the back door as this is the only entrance point, otherwise a lovely break in a lovely place

Pub bench very uncomfortable and not enough garden chairs for all guests. An umbrella for shade would of been appreciated as we were staying in the hottest week for August! Other than these small points we all had a very enjoyable stay and appreciated the coffee machine.

The house is perfect for a weekend getaway, large, clean & very well equipped with everything you might need. The hot tub is very spacious & easy to use. About the location

HOLMFIRTH

Peak District National Park 3 miles; Meltham 4 miles

The old traditional Pennine town of Holmfirth is situated in the heart of the beautiful Holme Valley, on the edge of the West Yorkshire Pennines. Made famous by The Last of The Summer Wine TV series, there is more to Holmfirth than Compo and Nora Battye’s stockings! The ‘Picturedrome’, the North of England’s finest live music venue attracts many famous bands and is located right in the centre of the town. The pelotons from the Tour de France 2014 and the Tour de Yorkshire have both been through this quaint Holme Valley town en route to the iconic 524 metre Holme Moss climb two miles away. It is in these hills where cycling’s triple Olympic Medalist Ed Clancy grew up. Holmfirth also has a good public swimming pool and fitness centre, parks and some super shops and restaurants. The people here are friendly, the streets are quaint and the scenery is breathtaking. The Peak District National Park with its moors, dales, forests, lakes and reservoirs is also easily accessible. The Upper Derwent Valley, home to the spectacular Ladybower and Derwent reservoirs, and where the famous 617 ‘Dambusters’ Squadron practiced the audacious bombing raid on the Ruhr valley in 1943, is only a short scenic drive away. Slightly further is Chatsworth, the stately home of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, and situated close to the market town of Bakewell, the home of Bakewell Puddings. The Yorkshire Sculpture Park, The National Coal Mining Museum, Wentworth Castle, and the Hepworth Gallery are also within short drives away and well worth a visit. For a spot of culture, Holmfirth has annual festivals with many more attractions that bring visitors back for more; such as the Folk, Arts, and Food & Drink Festivals. Also not to be missed, is Holmfirth Vineyard and Restaurant, where you can book wine tasting tours and enjoy a lovely meal in the restaurant.
