  • "The cottage was not clean, there was black mould on the walls."

The bedroom smelled. The toilet seat was not secure, the bathroom tap was not secured properly. The bathroom ceiling had mould on it.There was supposed to be a garden to sit in,there was not.The scertain boards were filthy.I don't think this property should have a good rating, very disappointing. The television was too small and you couldn't watch the BBC channels

Wasn’t the cleanest of properties cobwebs mostly and dusty skirting boards plus the fire had just been left after last use living room ok seating was fine but channel choice on TV wasn’t that good kitchen ok canny layout could do with some proper microwave containers and someone had broken the freezer part of the fridge and not said anything should’ve had the decency to admit to it bathroom is small it’ll be a squeeze for a larger person to sit on the toilet also big shower head no pressure bedroom biggest room bed nice but not for the taller person also window doesn’t lock and can be opened from outside Nice area quiet and peaceful overall not the best but not the worst by far Clark and Caroline friendly 6 or 7 out of 10

Quiet and calm, perfect for a relaxing break. Clean and welcoming. We had a long car ride so really appreciated the bottle of wine and snack left by the owners. The bed was very comfortable which helped make this a great getaway from busy everyday life. You could really relax.

  • "We loved the little cottage and it's location, lovely and quiet and a really dark sky, amazing for looking at the stars."

The ducks made an additional smile to our faces. I only have one small niggle and that is the bathroom is very cramped, hardly any room when using the loo and I also feel they would benefit from a walk in shower, rather than one over the bath. Quite difficult to get in and out (being an older lady). Overall very nice and the people seemed really nice. Thanks.

Thanks for your feedback and delighted that you enjoyed the peace and quiet and were able to explore the night sky during your stay. The bathroom might not be the largest however it is the size that it is...we unfortunately can't make it any larger which is the reason for not trying to add a walk in shower. The shower over the bath is the most practical solution for now. Property Owner

  • "This listing does not live up to its description."

It is a cold, unwelcoming place where the heating is insufficient in every respect. Cold floors, draughty windows, a lack of insulation in this outbuilding lead to it having an unaired, abandoned feel and certainly not suitable for a winter break. It can be found up about a mile up the farm track, with a dark, dense wooded view from the kitchen and a view of the back of a farmhouse from the front. There is no name on the cottage which stands next to a delapidated greenhouse with sharp glass which has been allowed to cave in and stay where it fell. We left after 2 nights because the bed was so horribly and unbelievably cold. We left the heating on all day on our second day but the building retains no warmth at all. The minute the heating goes off, it becomes cold again. There is insufficient lighting in the lounge/diner for reading which is not cosy, even with a log fire. The owners had kitted out the kitchen well and left eggs as a welcome gesture which was nice but even the black , windowless bathroom was quite depressing. We did not contact the owners before we left as there is nothing they could have done to improve things for us. Sykes' representative's naïve comment that we should have talked to them first so that they could have turned up the thermostat showed a lack of understanding of the severity of our issues. We have both lived in a rural setting in the north of England and are used to inclement , winter weather. We have been Sykes customers for over 20 years and have always had a good experience. This means we will not be booking our next holiday with Sykes.

Disappointed to read this feedback, particularly as, as you mentioned in your feedback you did not attempt to make any contact with us during your stay. I am surprised to read that you were cold when the log basket was almost full when you left, indicating that you had not used the stove to provide you with additional heating which would of course have created a cosy environment. The greenhouse is within the farmhouse garden and is not a part of Gardeners Cottage. Unfortunately our green house has been totally destroyed in the recent storm and as we have endured other damage to farm buildings and trees we have not yet had time to remove it. This is a priority for us and it will be removed as soon as possible. It certainly has not been left to "cave in". As per the description this is a traditional cottage in a rural location. From the feedback you have given, it sounds like this is perhaps not what you were looking for. Property Owner
