  • "Fabulous cottage well equipped, clean, cozy and brilliant location for local walks and exploring dumfries & Galloway."

Great for dogs. Nice big porch to clean them down and leave wet coats & wellies in. A great secure back garden to let dogs out.

It was lovely to return to after days out exploring this gorgeous part of Scotland and the garden was an added bonus for the dog. We would not hesitate it staying here again. The village has everything that you need regarding shops, pubs and cafes alongside wonderful walks from the doorstep. We really enjoyed our stay, thank you x

A minor point - generally the property was comfortable and well equipped, and it is a great area for a quiet get way.

  • "We enjoyed our stay immensely."

The property is equipped with more than what we needed and all the appliances and utensils were practically new judging from their condition. The gated garden area was invaluable for the dark early morning dog routine. Extremely warm and cosy in the evenings and perfectly placed to enjoy the charming little town. A wonderful park and miles of footpaths within a few hundred yards of the house which was great for the dogs. It is a pity we could not stay for longer.

Hi Benjamin, thank you for your kind feedback as all feedback is greatly appreciated. The location is very good if you wish to travel around the area as it is central to many interesting places. My only suggested change for the owners to consider would be to install a handrail in the bathroom. As an older visitor I found shower over the bath a little precarious to step out of when wet.

Hi Marilyn, great to have you back at the cottage again and really glad you enjoy it as much as we do. Thank you for the kind feedback and will look into the fitment of a handle as it’s a great idea. Thanks again and hope to see you again soon, Hannah x Property Owner

  • "Cottage in ideal location for all amenities."

Garden an added bonus. Quiet, quaint and compact. Slept in front bedroom as much lighter and airier. Bathroom lovely. Would benefit from a welcome guide letting you know where cleaning utilities (hoover) etc (if available) were stored. Would benefit from some instructions on how to use TV, (BT box and TV), and other appliances etc Unfortunately, we were unable to access the TV during our stay due to an ariel not being installed and weather conditions for BT box. The weather was bad so TV was missed. Had to contact owner on a number of occasions. Left 1 day early.

Hi Clen thank you for the kind feedback as it’s all greatly appreciated. Unfortunately you came to visit Gatehouse when a storm hit and all the town was hit by an electrical storm taking a lot of the internet and cables down in the process. We did our best to get you up and running, with an aerial man and BT all coming within the week, the BT box was also the internet and this doesn’t give TV channels just internet Wi-Fi (this was alot quicker than some residents in the town!) If I recall you also left early due to persistent weather conditions. The idea of some information on the use of the equipment is a good idea and I’ll put something together. Thanks again and hope we could see you again for a better experience in Gatehouse. Thanks again Hannah x Property Owner

  • "A beautiful cottage, everything you need for a stay."

An ideal base to go walking or the beaches, which there are plenty of, small towns and villages. Cocoa bean chocolate farm, Galloway ice cream farm, ideal if you have kids. Only issue we had was the back door, took a while to work out you had to lift the key whilst turning it to get it open. Loved the garden, saw the red kites and the weather was great apart from 1 day. But that’s the weather for you. Would definitely recommend staying here.

Thanks Grahame for your kind feedback of our cottage and appreciate all the feedback given. Will get the back door looked at, thanks again for the heads up. Really appreciate the feedback and hope to see again soon. Regards Hannah x Property Owner

It had everything we needed for a very full week in fine weather. Thank you.

Towel rail in bathroom, non slip mat in bath that has already been fedback. Better lighting - cottage is very gloomy. Better mattresses. I had to send off to Amazon for a mattress topper as single beds so uncomfortable. Double bed has dents in it where two people have slept.

Hi Susan, thank you for your feedback. We’re up next week and have a bath mat so thank you as it’s an idea we didn’t foresee. Sorry the beds wasn’t to your standard but we did replace all the mattresses early in the year, and the single beds too so apologies again; we’ll speak to cleaner regarding the dents. Hi thank you for the feedback, the windows seemed fine as we were there a week before and all seemed ok especially when the heat was in the high 20’s but will have them looked at, thank you. The non slip mat is a good idea and and will look into one and garden is down a little path but secured and I will speak to Sykes to amend the description but I did put a map on the notice board. Double bed in boxroom did not work for us- not enough room and difficult to use. Fixed easily as we could move into the single bedded room. Maybe make it clearer that although garden is enclosed the access to it is not. Fine for us as our old dog won't run away but might be an issue with younger dogs. Location is excellent - shop, dog friendly pubs and great walks very close. Lovely area.

It's been beautifully renovated and has everything you could possibly need. Particularly enjoyed the comfy lounge. The bedroom layout (as mentioned by previous reviewers) is awkward but dictated by the shape/size of the rooms and we opted to sleep in the twin bedded room and were perfectly comfortable. The garden is separate from the house and accessed via a little alleyway but totally enclosed and safe for children/dogs.

Ideally situated for local amenities and country walks. Let down by worn out single divans and a double bed hard against a wall in the box room. This made sleeping uncomfortable for the elderly.

Hi sorry for late reply, just realised how to reply to feedback! Thank you for your feedback as it’s greatly appreciated, we have now changed all the mattresses and replaced the divans with solid pine beds, and the fixed bed also has a new mattress. • "We enjoyed our stay very much."

One minor problem was that we had to juggle around the 4 duvets to provide warm enough cover for three people (in Autumn). We had to use a single duvet and a double duvet with the double bed, and a double duvet with one of the single beds. It wouldn't have been OK if there had been 4 of us. Or if it had been colder at night. Anyway, apart from that (easily fixable) issue the house was great.

Hi thank you for your feedback, sorry for late response just realised how to reply, and sorry to hear about the duvet problem will look at swooping duvets for the relevant season. Thanks again for your visit and feedback. Hannah x Property Owner

About the location

GATEHOUSE OF FLEET

Kirkcudbright 8 miles; Newton Stewart 15 miles; Castle Douglas 15 miles.

Peaceful in its pastel colours, the small country town of Gatehouse of Fleet lies on the Solway Firth, in the midst of Dumfries & Galloway countryside, with good sandy beaches a five-minute drive away. The town was founded in the 1760s as a mill community, and today the nearby Mill on the Fleet - a visitor centre in a former bobbin mill - tells the tale of Gatehouse’s cotton-spinning days. Today, there are several shops in the town including a small supermarket, chemist, bank and Post Office, along with two book/gift shops, a kilt-making centre and two cafes. All four pubs in the town have restaurant facilities and welcome children. Castle Douglas, a 15-minute drive away, offers an extensive range of shops, Threave Gardens and boating on Carlingwark Loch.
