The pictures of this place do not do it enough justice, so much room and it feels so homely too. I am sure we will go back again in the not too distant future. Thank you for allowing us to share your beautiful cottage for our holidays, we've made some great memories here.

Particularly liked sitting in the conservatory with a coffee and watching the birds in the garden. There is loads to do in the area, with walking from the cottage as the road is very quiet. Easy to access the Southern Upland Way, or Wood of Cree. Newton Stewart has lots of independent little shops.

  • "We had an amazing week at Borgan cottage, a lovely quiet retreat."

The cottage has everything you need, a seriously well equipped kitchen, comfy beds and sofas. Watching the wildlife was an added bonus and the house martins are mesmerising. Yes some parts of the house could do with an update but it makes it quirky and lovable. Great location for exploring the Galloway forest and beaches a little further away. We loved the Galloway smokehouse had some delicious meals. After reading some of the reviews I was a little apprehensive about some of the comments but we didn't need to worry just remember you are staying in a wooded location with peace and tranquility, flies and birds will visit! Thank you for a great week and we will be back.

It was spacious and comfortable for our wide age range (children, parents and grandparents). Great WiFi coverage and well equipped throughout. The cottage is surrounded by beautiful countryside and we saw a range of wildlife including deer, hares and foxes. The birds at the cottage were fantastic, and fascinating to see so close. A real pleasure to stay here.

  • "The cottage was lovely and in such a picturesque area."

The cottage does need some TLC however. The plumbing issue with the outside drain needs solving, and from a cleanliness perspective it would be brilliant to get all the bird poo outside cleaned up off the walls/floor. Other then that a gorgeous cottage, I really recommend staying here.

Thank you for your feedback, and I am so pleased you enjoyed your stay. I have had the drains cleaned professionally, and am sorry this was an issue you came into on your holiday with us, and had been away and had not been made aware. I have also ensured all the nesting bird mess has been cleaned from the back door area. A hazard of encouraging birds to nest around the cottage, but one easily managed, so sorry this was not done. I am pleased you liked the cottage and we would welcome you back another time. Property Owner

  • "The house in location was lovely, so peaceful, beds were ideal and the furniture."

The problem was the drain outside overflowing when using anything with water and some odd smells in downstairs toilet, plus outside. We also had problem with lots of flies. It was lovely to watch the birds, but the entry to the property was very mucky with bird excrement, which was a little off putting. But as to everything else it was lovely.

Thank you so much for your feedback and I am sorry that you had an issue regarding the birds. Being rural we have many house martins and swallows nesting around the cottage from spring through summer, which I love and encourage. This does however mean mess from the nests. There is normally one above the back door which is, I think, what you are referring to. I have asked for the windowsill to be cleaned, apologies this was not done prior to your stay. The kitchen drain has been professionally cleaned now and I am told, is functioning well and all drains operating fine now. The flies are rural living I'm afraid, I have no answer for them. I am pleased that you enjoyed your stay overall. Property Owner

Fabulous walks straight from the door, so very pet friendly. A short drive away from other trails, Loch Trool was brilliant. Newton Stewart very convenient for all amenities. Borgan is a well equipped great cottage for everyone, light and airy, loved the large kitchen and the sunroom which gave lovely viewing of the local wildlife. This was our second visit and have already booked again for later this year.

  • "The cottage is lovely."

Very comfortable and quiet and well equipped. Very nice location too. There is a problem with the drain outside the kitchen window, it kept overflowing. Also a strange odour in the downstairs bathroom made me wonder if the drain under there had a problem? Apart from that and the washing machine in the garage not working it was a great place to spend the week. One tiny thought was that hooks on the back of the bedroom and bathroom doors would be helpful but it’s not a dealbreaker! Will hopefully come back soon.

Hi Julia, Thanks for your feedback. The drain outside the kitchen window is from the sink, and will bubble from time to time up if lots of water goes down the sink in a one go. It is only the waste tap water, and nothing sinister. We have had it checked. Not sure about the bathroom odor, drains checked. Nothing apparent and no odor since running taps. I think perhaps the bath had not been used for a long period and water sitting in pipes. There is a new Hotpoint washing machine fitted in the kitchen, apologies that someone removed the do not use sign on the one in the middle store, it has been reinstated. I am glad you enjoyed your stay and we look forward to welcoming you back another time. Property Owner

Great location for biking, nice runs from the house and forest walks....remember the Smidge for the midges.....! Must visit Glentrool & Killoughtree for biking. Must see beaches, Mossylands beautiful, Kippford great for crabs, Rockcliffe super too. Remember plenty of pound coins for carparks as a lot of them don't do cards. We will be back !

  • "We had a thoroughly enjoyable stay at Borgan cottage."

It was very comfortable and the layout of the house well suited the large group that we were. It is in quite a remote location but we knew that before booking and there are some lovely forestry walks/towns to visit a relatively short drive away. We all had a great time- thank you! The only things I’d suggest in terms of improvements/amendments to the listing are related to accessibility/cleanliness. The stairs to the top floor are steep, quite slippy and tricky for the elderly people in our group to navigate- they would have struggled if they’d had to sleep upstairs. It was also quite difficult for our 2 year old to manage them. The angled roof in the bathroom upstairs is also problematic in terms of usability for older people- I wonder if it might be worth noting that on the listing, so that larger bookings are able to assess the suitability of the house for their groups? In terms of cleanliness, the kitchen, bedrooms and downstairs bathroom were spotless, which was fantastic. Unfortunately, the group before us must have had a/multiple dogs and the living room was covered in dog hair. It was all over the sofas, rugs and floors. Our clothes were covered in dog hair every day. We even found a hoover upstairs and hoovered everywhere ourselves to try and remove it all. Finally, there is an issue with some mould/damp in the upstairs bathroom. There were very visible lines of brown water running down the ceiling in that room, that were there from when we arrived. It would be good to have that sorted. Overall, however, we really did have a brilliant stay. The beds were all very comfortable and the kitchen well stocked. We loved watching the birds at all the bird feeders in the garden. I would strongly recommend the house to others wanting to stay in that area. If it was perfectly clean, we would have given it 5 stars.

Hi Helen, Thank you for your feedback. The upstairs bathroom has been renovated and redecorated, unfortunately the painting did not happen until after your stay. It is all re painted and looking super. It was not damp, just water marks from the steam as visitors tend to turn the fan off so not woken by others using the toilet in the night! Dogs are very welcome in the cottage however if visitors allow them on the furniture, which we do not, there is very little control we have over this. The cleaners do there very best, but the onus has to be on guests to adhere to our guidelines, being mindful of the next guests. Thank you for your feedback and we are so pleased you enjoyed your stay. Best wishes, Clare Property Owner

Borgan is also only a short drive from all of the great walking and seven staines bike trails at Kirroughtree. The locals were very friendly and the town of Newton Stewart has all of the amenities and shops you'd need. The location is quiet and isolated with national cycle route 7 passing the door. Very few vehicles or people were seen. There are many good walks in the area. We saw a red squirrel in the trees up the hillside behind Borgan Cottage and wild goats near Loch Trool. The sea is a short drive away too. We likened the area to the Lake District with very few tourists.

I am more than thrilled that you enjoyed your stay. It is a beautiful area and we work hard to make the cottage a haven for the end of a lovely walk, and a place to relax and enjoy with family and or friends. Thank you for your lovely feedback Ruth. X Property Owner

Borgan Cottage is a charming remote cottage, nestled in the scenic village of Bargrennan, in Dumfries and Galloway.

Surrounded by beautiful forests, in a national Dark Sky area, this welcoming property is the perfect retreat for families wanting to escape reality to the Scottish Highlands.

Be enchanted by the views of the great outdoors as you pull up to the home, and head inside and hang up your coats, before making your way into the kitchen/diner where you can pop the kettle on and enjoy a warm cup of tea around the dining table whilst discussing your holiday itinerary.

Take your bags through to the homey double bedroom and place your belongings in the spacious storage provided.

Guests staying in the ground-floor twin bedroom will be delighted by the short walk to the downstairs bathroom, where they can treat themselves to an afternoon soak in the bath or a thoughtful morning shower.

Following a tiring expedition to the local area, allow yourself to rest up on the sofas in the sitting room, where on a cold winter's day you can get nice and toasty by the woodburning stove.

Make the most of the conservatory, a bright and airy room that is great for socialising with friends or indulging in a book during some alone time.

Step out from the large patio doors and into the garden for a spot of alfresco dining in the summertime.

Climb the staircase up to the ample first floor where you will discover a further two bedrooms, one twin and one double, as well as a chill out area, bathroom and plenty of extra storage space.

Back outside, you will find an outbuilding containing logs for your woodburning stove, as well as a drying area.

A short drive will take you to the Wood of Cree where you can enjoy a peaceful stroll through the largest ancient wood in southern Scotland.

For a more challenging walk, visit the stunning Cairnsmore of Fleet, framing unspoilt views across the grassland and purple heather from the summit.

Stock up on food and supplies in the burgh town of Newton Stewart where you can also find some delightful eateries and pubs.

Here you can immerse yourself in local history with a tour of The Museum Newton Stewart, set inside a disused church, or test your swing with a round of golf at Newton Stewart Golf Club.

If an escape to the Scottish countryside is calling your name, stay at Borgan Cottage.
