Excellent location! Had all the facilities we needed and the owner was very responsive. Other reviews mention it could have been cleaner but it’s an old house so you can’t expect it to be spotless. Could do with a door mat for the front door, other than that we couldn’t fault it!

  • "The property was not as advertised it has no outside furniture this was poor."

The cupboards were a mess could not find pots and pans or jug etc. Had to hunt through cupboards . The outside is uneven outside the back door. All door knobs hanging off . There is no window lock in kids bedroom found this to be dangerous. The cottage is not really clean underneath beds furniture etc we were cleaning up sweet wraps and hair . The neighbours were fantastic really polite and friendly and helpful.

Miss H, I am dismayed to read your comments. I have addressed the missing patio furniture. This was removed for cleaning and a re paint but since my accident, I have been unable to get this issue rectified. I have never had complaints about the other issues you mentioned. I have looked through previous remarks and people's general opinion is the kitchen is well appointed. You pointed out no lock on the bunkbed window and considered this dangerous. If you try and open the window fully you will find it will only open a small way. Interestingly, you didn't have any children booked in on your stay. I worked very hard to renovate this property with my life savings. I hope you find peace and happiness. Property Owner

It had everything you could need and the beds were some of the most comfortable we have ever stayed in. Our terrier was completely at home too and we would certainly stay here next time we head to Cornwall. The top floor bedroom did have quite steep steps (as stated in the description) but the climb was worth it!!! 10/10 from us!

  • "We spent a very enjoyable week at the Harbour Retreat…Mevagissey served well as a base from which to explore much of Cornwall and for a small, charming, fishing port Mevagissey has a surprisingly good selection of restaurants & historic pubs."

We used Willow Car Park and were very happy with it….Harbour Retreat is small but perfectly formed. It is charming, generally well equipped (a hair dryer in every room) and clean. It’s location within the village couldn’t be better. A 79 year old and an 82 year old were both happy with the first set of stairs. I, as a spritely 54 year old, had no problem with the loft stairs.…Thank you.

Thank you Ivan for choosing Harbour Retreat. So glad you enjoyed your stay. Property Owner

  • "Harbour View is a lovely cottage, very well situated in Mevagissey."

No doubt about that. And it was beautifully clean. Now the buts... 1. The Welcome Book in the cottage states very clearly that the second bedroom is up a very, very steep set of steps (almost a ladder) and should not be used by the very young or old without supervision. This statement is NOT in the Sykes advertisement. I could get up (am I 74) but my friend is not so agile. But no way was I risking getting my luggage up or trying to come down in the dark. Luckily we were just two, so I jack-knifed myself for the lower bunk in the third room. Peeving as top room is an absolute delight whereas bunk room is basic. 2. This inaccessibility was pertinent because the bulb to the stairs/landing light was blown when we arrived, The light is over the stairs, rather than the landing, and probably hard to change. When did it go, I wonder? Certainly it was not checked before our arrival. We had to use torches to go to bed. (See final point to learn why we didn't bother to contact owner) 3. Night two the Fire Alarm started in the middle of the night. The battery was flat. Clearly, not regularly checked. Illegal? 4. A previous guest had written in the Guest Book how surprised and disappointed she was that there was no hairdryer. We were grateful to her else we, too, would have been stuck with wet hair and a table booked. A hairdryer is, surely, as basic as a kettle? But what stunned us was the owner's stinging reply that she had stopped supplying them as guests stole them. No excuse! If it is that common, bulk buy and add cost to Overheads... Goodness they are cheap enough. Or emphasise in Sykes Overview. 5. On journey down we got a chirpy text saying the Master Bedroom had been prepared for us. Minor panic as we are friends, not partners. I replied saying I hoped second room was also set up. No reply. We now suspect text was automatic and any reply unread. This and hairdryer affair decided us contact was probably best avoided. Afterall, We had our torches... which was double useful as wires to bedside reading lamps aren't long enough!

I am very sorry to hear your review. Regarding the Buts... If you look at the description on the Sykes website under the heading of 'The Property' it clearly states the 2nd floor is accessed via STEEP stairs. 2. the light is on the landing at the top of the stairs and lights the landing beautifully. To use the light there are several switches. One above your head as you climb the stairs and the other at the top of the stairs. The light bulb had not blown so I am unsure why you were unable to get it to work. No one else seems to have had an issue. 3. I change my smoke alarms every 6 months, not the batteries but the whole unit, also the carbon monoxide detector is changed every 12 months. (Family connected to the fire service so this is well managed). It can take as little as a small bug to get into the appliance to set it off. Apologises this happened to you. I dont supply a hair dryer and suggest perhaps you should have clearly read what I DO supply in the property details. This may save you any disappointment going forward. With the issues with the environment I am not prepared to bulk buy items that people have at home. We need to be more environmentally friendly. This brings me to your next point regarding the making up of beds. Again I try to save money, the enviroment and time so send out a chirpy message letting guests know what rooms have been made up depending on the number of guests staying. I have in the past made the cottage up for 6 persons with only 2 staying. Those 2 guests have been known to use all the bath sheets and hand towels for 6 people in their weeks stay. I of course endeavour to make up what beds are needed and as you pointed out, the twin room was made up for you. I am not sure what you regard as basic with regard the twin room. There are 2 chest of drawers, lamps, mirror, rug and handing space. The same as the other rooms. The one bedside lamp is plugged into an extention lead, the other has 2 double sockets next to the bed. I am glad you found Harbour Retreat well situated and beautifully clean. Property Owner

Should let people know about car park issues - i.e there is no parking Also about third bedroom being up steep, narrow staircase and wont be accessible for some people

Thank you for your kind words regarding your stay at Harbour Retreat. I do note your comments regarding parking issues. It does state in the cottage details on the website that parking is 5 minutes away from the property. There is space to unload/load luggage at the bottom of Cliff Street. Mevagissey is a small fishing village and as such does not have parking facilities in any of the holiday lets within the village. Properties even with courtyards are rare. There are several parking facilities around the village and you will see the huge car park on the left as you enter the village which is a few minutes stroll from the cottage passed the charming gift shops. I also note your remarks regarding the steep stairs to the top floor bedroom which gives you glimpses of the harbour from the bedroom window. It does clearly indicate on the website about the steep stairs to the top floor so I am very sorry you failed to pick on this detail. Thank you for choosing Harbour Retreat. Property Owner

  • "Lovely quaint modern cottage with character, very close to harbour and centre of Mevagissey."

The cottage is small but it will be as its an old fisherman's cottage with bags of character, and the space has been made good use of. Cottage was clean, with fresh clean bed linen and towels. It had all the amenities we needed for a weeks stay and plaenty of crockery and cutlery. The only reason for not giving 5 stars is lack of free parking facilities. You can park at Willow long stay car park (5mins walk) and ask the attendant in the parking hut who will agree a price for the week rather than paying by machine or on the app which is more expensive. The only other nice to have would have been a yard that suitable to sit out in rather than just for for letting the dog out (we didn't let ours use that space) or drying off towels and wetsuits after being on the beach. However, we were hardly in so not a priority for us.

Furnishings are comfortable and the cottage was well equipped. Unfortunately the shower was broken on our arrival and took four days to repair, not ideal when there is only one bathroom! Shame the court yard is never in the sun, however plenty of places to sit around the harbour.

Thank you for your recent comments on my cottage Harbour Retreat. I have spoken to my housekeeper regarding the shower and she informed me it was working when she cleaned the property. We run checks after each guest has vacated and photograph all rooms pre and post clean. As soon as you reported the fault Saturday evening, I was informed and a new shower was ordered on Sunday morning. We did have to wait for the part to arrive which it did on the Tuesday afternoon and then Paul arrived to fit Wednesday morning. We are unable to predict when parts will fail and unfortunately this happened while you were staying at the cottage. I am sure you can identify with this if you have had something breakdown in your own home. Every effort was taken to sort the problem out asap. I can only apologise for this inconvenience. Having access to a courtyard in Meva is a rarity but I am unfortunately unable to do anything about the position of the courtyard. I'm so glad you enjoyed the area around the harbour. Property Owner

  • "The cottage itself was in a lovely location and very convenient."

It had been done up beautifully however lacking a few final touches. Firstly the cottage advertises a courtyard which really is not somewhere you would sit an enjoy it absolutely stinks of wee from dogs and needs a good jet wash! Our dog wouldn’t even wee out there I can only assume this was down to the stench! The owner could do with making the court are more user friendly and putting a proper fence in as advertised as dog friendly but dogs could easily get out if they wanted! Secondly as soon as you walk in the cottage your greeted with the damp smell I appreciate it’s an old building etc but it wouldn’t hurt to buy a couple of diffusers to take that instant stench away. Thirdly the lounge rug is filthy and needs a very good wash! Fourth point to note absolutely no cleaning equipment left, other than a broken hoover which was no good for hoovering up the spiders that were there on arrival and remove webs which for future note I think the cleaners should remove. Fifth and last point a welcome pack would be nice a pint of milk and teabags is just a nice little touch maybe even a couple of scones always goes down well. Overall the cottage was comfortable and the location was perfect just a few points to note to make it a 10/10 as it’s not far away. The harbour is said it’s wonderful a lovely Dog friendly welcoming place.

Thank you for your comments which I have noted and wish to respond to. Sorry to hear you felt the newly installed fence was not sufficient for your pet’s needs, I have had many pets staying in the cottage with their owners and you are the first to make comment regarding the fence. I have now made adjustments to the fence. The courtyard is being pressure washed within the week, Thank you for bringing this to my attention as with all the bookings and quick change over finding time to do this before now has been difficult. We ask guests not to allow their pets to urinate on the courtyard, there is an outside tap for any accidents. As you walk out of the front door of the cottage you are on the start of the coastal walk with lots of places to explore and walk your pets. As for the broken vacuum I will investigate, my cleaner does not use this vacuum and to be honest it shouldn't be there. I wanted Harbour Retreat to be a place for people to bring their pets and not having carpets makes it easier to clean, all the floors are either wood or tiled and I designed it this way for hygiene reasons. There are brooms and dustpans within the cottage. I have provided welcome packs before and even gave Fortnum & Mason hampers to several peak season bookings but not 1 person made a kind remark or thank you. I am glad you found the cottage comfortable and you thought it was renovated to a good standard and I do agree, it is a great location. I do have plans to upgrade the courtyard for next season with a covered area with seating, soft furnishings and some fun outside lighting. Thanks Again and we hope to welcome you back in the future.
