  • "We loved our stay at the Signal House."

Our weather was mixed - but the sea was always fascinating to watch. Well equipped house and great instructions for boat spotting etc. We saw seals from the balcony! Steps are a challenge but we feel fitter after 2 weeks of them and the walks and views are totally worth it. Cawsand and Kingsands are lovely villages, welcoming and with good eating to be had. Useful instructions in the house for what is open when. Fantastic stay and we’d like to return!

Great to hear you enjoyed your stay and thank you for taking the time to feedback online and on eating places in the visitors book for future guests. We hope to welcome you again in the future. Hopefully dolphins as well as boats, seals and sea next time! Property Owner

  • "Really lovely stay and property."

The view from the balcony is so beautiful. Yes, the steps are hard to get down there, and the private road to drive to the property is quite narrow, but it's worth it! We loved exploring the small tidal beach 2 minutes from the property and we had it to ourselves a couple of times, which was brilliant! Kingsand-Cawsand town is really lovely and quaint and we enjoyed the ferry that took us over to Plymouth. The property is very well equipped and we were very happy to see the scones, jam and cream and prosecco that was left for us when we arrived. We would love to come back another time soon.

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback and great to hear you enjoyed your mini-break. We hope you can come back to enjoy a longer stay next time. Property Owner

This was our 3rd visit since 2021 and we are never disappointed, if we could go more regularly we would. There is a lot of thought and attention put into your stay, it's so well equipped, you don't need to think of anything at all. The walks are fantastic, a hike up through the woods and you might to get to see deer and ponies! And the views are just wonderful, if you don't want to walk, just sit on the balcony and take in the glorious views - including sailing boats, the ships and the seal. Thank you again to David and Heather who are fantastic hosts, your welcome pack is lovely :)

Thank you so much for your repeat custom and lovely feedback. So glad you enjoyed your stay and that the wildlife came out to greet you again. Property Owner

Welcome pack was very much appreciated and a very nice gesture. Would recommend the mirror in main bedroom has access to a plug socket for the hair dryer. Please can you warn dog owners the metal staircase is a hazard for dogs claws if they run up or down them.

We are glad you had a comfortable stay and enjoyed the views which are pretty special and thank you for your helpful feedback. Property Owner

  • "Fantastic location, high quality facilities (kitchen/bathroom/en -suit/utility area) and very well maintained."

    * Directly on the path for costal walks in both directions, 1/2 hr into the local villages (and beyond) and in the other direction to a stunning peninsula. *had an issue on the first night with an external alarm sounding, something to do with the drainage system. I called the maintenance number which was answered immediately and the "fault" rectified within the hour. I also know the owner was involved by phone and was very interested to be updated. For me this was a very good indication that if issues arise they will be dealt with asap. What more can one expect ? ;-) Recommendation = 9 rather than 10. Only because due to the steps leading to the property one would have to give a caveat to some groups (I am 56 and I got up and down 2/3 times a day but I could imagine some would struggle)

Thank you for your feedback, it is important to us that you enjoy the property as much as we do and have a relaxing time - so really pleased you had an amazing Christmas with your family and dogs. We hope the rest of your 'bucket list' is equally enjoyable. Property Owner

  • "The steps leading to the old signal house are a challenge, but what awaits you is well worth the effort!"

Choose carefully what you take to the property, back packs are the easiest method of carrying. The old signal house is a very historic property, but has been wonderfully modernised inside, tastefully and sympathetically. The views from the balcony are outstanding, plus you can take the stairs onto the rooftop, which is an amazing experience. The walks around the peninsula are plentiful, a wonderful walk is the coastal walk to Polhawn Fort and beyond should you wish to. Sadly we didn’t see any seals or dolphins during our visit but we did see deer and Dartmoor ponies. The options for eating and drinking in Cawsand and Kingsand are very good, even in the winter months, it’s a very friendly area. We are very pleased we chose the old signal house, the steps are quickly forgotten!

We are so glad you enjoyed your stay. We find we oddly miss the exercise of the steps when we leave! Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback, your kind comments and helpful advice for future guests - it's much appreciated. Property Owner

The sea views must be world class. The house is beautifully furnished with a fine eye for detail. We particularly enjoyed the short walk down on to the Sandy beach next to the property and the superb walk along the cliff path to Rame Head. Nearby the seaside village of Cawsand has plenty of good places to eat and we enjoyed catching the ferry from the beach direct to the Barbican in Plymouth. We can’t wait to return!

Thank you so much for your lovely comments and so glad you enjoyed your stay. It is a shame you could not stay longer. We have never done the ferry but it is on our list as it is an adventure in its own right. Property Owner

The house is in a stunning location, the view from the balcony can keep you mesmerised for hours. We were lucky to see a pod of dolphins appear, which is apparently very rare, the seal made an appearance again and there is plenty of interesting ships to watch. The house is brilliantly equipped with everything we needed for a comfortable stay. Thank you for the lovely welcome basket, the prosecco and cream scones were a lovely treat. The log fire is great for evenings with a glass of wine, watching the world go by. We are already planning our next trip!

There are a lot of steps down to it but after a couple of trips up and down it becomes much easier. It’s worth it for the seclusion and spectacular views. All the appliances are very modern as is the decor. The espresso coffee machine was a bonus. The large utility room and extra downstairs loo and shower came in useful. There are lovely walks along the coast path nearby and we enjoyed swimming from the rocks and beach area just below the house (via a newly cleared path). Be aware that the access road to the property is very narrow with few passing places but thankfully not many vehicles need to use it.

What a way to spend the first week out of lockdown, a real treat! The owners were amazing with their communication before and during our stay and the views from the balcony were simply breath taking. The steps down and up to the cottage increased our fitness :), and the walks along the coastal path were really lovely. We loved every minute!

  • "Beautiful cottage a real home from home and WHAT a view."

The accommodation is beautifully presented, well supplied and very clean. Beds are comfortable and all linen is of a high quality. Plenty utensils and crockery, enough for everyone. Everything has been thought through here and the owners have done an excellent job of making this a lovely cottage to stay in. Plenty hot water and heating efficient. There are some beautiful walks with stunning views (weather permitting) on the South West costal path, some pretty villages but take care some very narrow. The downside is the steps, steeper than we thought and some steps are deep and a bit slippy in the wet especially with fallen leaves on, also hand rail was broken halfway down and very slimy from wet. Great caution is needed even for the fittest of people, the step issue should be more highlighted in the description. Also it says dog friendly but I would think seriously about taken dogs, the steps down to lower floor in cottage to front are not good for dogs, they slip and can't get grip as no carpets. You need to keep your dogs on leads and watch carefully. Keep your luggage to a light and compact for carrying up and down.

The only problem we had was the main oven failed to get above 150C but the small oven was fine. We mentioned this to the couple who came to clean on leaving and thought it would be an element and would inform the owners. The place was a joy to stay in and would highly recommend it.

  • "The Old Signal House is unique."

The property, and it's facilities, is high end, which compensates for the inevitable challenges due to remoteness and access. We stayed with three teenagers during a week of stormy weather, and they seemed to get a kick out of: visiting the little low-tide beach with caves at the bottom of Penlee Point; the windswept hike out to Rame Head, and the rather beautiful walk through forest to Kingsand and Cawsand. This little stretch of coast has a micro-climate that makes it nice being out and about whatever the forecasters throw at us, even in February.

  • "The location is superb there is no doubt about that!"

The steps up and down were ok for us but this would not be suitable for anyone with a mobility or fitness issue. The house was very nice and homely, with all the things that we required. If you want a quiet spot to stay with dogs, and like steps this is the house for you!

    Reviewed by AmandaAug 2019

  • "Definitely not the place to take teenagers- if you are a couple or a family who likes long walks or a quiet holiday this would be perfect."

The location is remote and the beach is not accessible at all states of the tide. The steps down to the signal house are not for the faint hearted especially with luggage or food. The constant fog leaves the whole property feeling damp and it was mid July. The property itself benefits from a balcony with amazing views of Plymouth sound and the accommodation is comfortable and well appointed.

Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback and we are so pleased to hear that you enjoyed the spectacular views from the balcony and found the accommodation comfortable. We ensure that the description includes clear information regarding the steps - all 84 of them - and the peaceful, secluded location. Most of our guests come here for the fantastic coastal setting, and I am sorry to hear that this was not ideal for your teenagers. You were so unlucky to have fog when the rest of the country was in a heatwave. Property Owner

Yes there are lots of steps to reach the house, but the views make it well worth it as are just spectacular. We didn't have the best of weather, but the wood burner more than made up for this. The bed was so comfy and the bath towels thick and fluffy. Everything you could need for a self catering holiday was provided. Lovely little hamper on arrival and the scones and clotted cream were a deliciously perfect touch. Will be recommending to all friends and family. Thanks Heather for being a fantastic host :)
