The house is beautifully and tastefully decorated and spotlessly clean, and, oh, what a view! There is no better location in Porthleven. We spent many hours sitting out on the front terrace with a book/coffee/meal/glass of wine and the family. This gets the sun from lunchtime onwards, and there are spectacular views of the waves crashing on the rocks to the left, and the harbour to the right. It's the perfect place to watch the boats going in and out, people walking about, and brave souls jumping off the harbour wall (I did this too - if you fancy it, make sure it's high tide!) The house is very well equipped - we even got a brand new TV and DVD player! We ate in most of the time and were able to cook no problem. The decor is modern, with new bathroom and kitchen, and lovely little touches to add to the nautical feel. Porthleven also had everything we needed - we didn't even move the car for 5 days after arriving. We loved wandering around the craft shops, walking on the coastal path east to Loe Bar and west part of the way to Praa Sands, and paddle-borading and kayaking with Ian from Verticle Blue, based right on the harbour. We spent a sunny day on the beach, a 2-minute walk away, and loved watching the waves crashing here and on the end of the harbour wall. Porthleven has plenty of restaurants and cafes for all budgets and tastes - our favourite being Nauti But Ice ice-cream, and Philps Pasties! It may be useful to note that there are steps up to the house. The picnic table was really handy for eating and playing games, but a comfier patio sofa or bench with cushions would also have been nice, for sitting to appreciate the view. Porthleven is now one of our faqvourite places. We would love to visit The Haven again. Many thanks to Chris for a fantastic week in this beautiful house.

The property

Occupying an elevated position, The Haven commands stunning views over the harbour at Porthleven and out to the sea beyond.

This spectacular Edwardian house is just a few minutes walk from the beach and makes a perfect holiday home for family and friends.

Refurbished with comfort and style in mind the colours and soft furnishings compliment the seaside and also the period in which the house was built.

The Haven boasts superbly presented accommodation over two floors.

Fabulous views of the sea from all the windows at the front of the property.

A wood burner for fireside gatherings in the open-plan sitting room and a generous dining area make a great social space.

If you're not dining out, cook up a feast in the well equipped kitchen.

On the second floor there are two generous bedrooms and a bunk room, all indulgently restful, a chic family bathroom and an extra WC, all ensure creature-comforts are a given.

The raised front terrace makes for a delightful space for al fresco dining or an evening tipple, watching the boats glide in and out of the harbour.

Porthleven is famous for its eateries and for being the most Southerly harbour; visit Rick Stein's or one of the other fine restaurants which adorn the harbour, there is something to suit all tastes and budgets.

Take a stroll around the bespoke shops, including handmade jewellery, glassware and galleries and why not pick up something tasty in the delicatessen or bakery on your way home.

For those who like fishing there are trips offered out of the harbour and an excellent bait and tackle shop on the harbourside.

For those that enjoy an inspirational scenic walk, the south-west coastal footpath is on the doorstep, en-route to legendary Lands End with its dramatic coastline and varied attractions in all weathers whatever the season.

Nearby is the market town of Penzance where you can take a day trip on the ferry to the Isles of Scilly.

As well as Porthleven beach you could explore the nearby beaches at Praa Sands and Perranuthnoe.

The Lizard Peninsula is also on the doorstep, so take a tour to discover amazing coves, cute villages and some incredible coastal scenery.

About the location

Helston 3 miles; Penzance 10 miles; Hayle 11 miles; St. Ives 17 miles; Falmouth 17.5 miles.

Porthleven is one of south west Cornwall’s hidden, coastal gems, located near Helston, famous for its annual Flora Dance Festival. Situated between Lizard Point and Land’s End, Porthleven retains the feel of a traditional Cornish fishing village, enjoying uninterrupted views of the Atlantic Ocean and the beautiful Cornish coastline. The iconic clock tower sits on the harbour entrance and the pubs, shops, cafés and restaurants cluster around the historic picturesque inner harbour, where there is plenty of boating and marine activity. With a warren of streets lined with classic Cornish, granite cottages, an extensive beach manned with lifeguards, the chance for alfresco dining in one of a number of well reviewed restaurants, and crabbing off the harbour, there are plenty of activities for the whole family to enjoy, all year round. Porthleven is building a reputation for eating out with a popular food festival established in the spring. Out of season, Porthleven has one of the best surf breaks in the country where you can sit down and get lost for hours watching the energetic surfers riding the waves. There are some fabulous hidden coves along this stretch of coastline, including Praa Sands, Poldhu Cove, and Rinsey, a magical setting for the more energetic. You may have even seen pictures of Porthleven on television, being one of the best spots in the UK for storm watching, with the crashing winter waves often being used as the backdrop to weather forecasts. Walkers will enjoy the South West Coast Path, adventuring west past Rinsey Head with spectacular views, or south across Loe Bar to Penrose Estate with its National Trust cafe, and on to Gunwalloe Church Cove. Take a trip to the Isles of Scilly by boat or plane and marvel at the display of sub-tropical gardens at the stunning Tresco Abbey. The Eden Project near St. Austell offers an interesting day out. Porthleven is the ideal base for discovering the delights of west Cornwall and the Lizard Peninsula.
