  • "This house was beautiful."

It had everything you could of needed while you were staying. The cream tea package was a lovely welcome to the house. The location was fantastic and easy walking distance to town with lovely views on the way down. The bed was extremely comfy with nice pillows, which is important for a good nights sleep. We had an amazing time and will definitely be back! We didn't have a pen so unfortunately couldn't write in the book on the table. Thank you for a wonderful week. Ceri and James

  • "The cottage is generally well furnished and equipped but unfortunately the back of the house (kitchen, bathroom and second bedroom) do have a damp problem and smelt musty."

The bathroom needs refurbishing - though the shower did work and there was plenty of hot water. Kitchen well equipped but no oven gloves made taking things out of the oven tricky!

  • "We very much enjoyed our stay in Penzance and Mazey Cottage has many positives with just a couple of areas to address."

The house is spacious and comfortable and the town is just a short walk away. The neighbours are very friendly, parking was available and it was a quiet area. A lovely cream tea was left as a welcome gift which was very much appreciated. The garden however was not as depicted in the listing, not overgrown just tired and a little muddy (although I understand the previous week was rainy which will have impacted the condition of the lawn). There is a definite slug problem - we removed 68 slugs from the lawn one morning before letting our puppy out! Sadly it was not the pleasant, relaxing space as envisaged. As per previous reviews, there is obviously a damp problem in the house which the owner is clearly trying to address with some success. The main issue being that the mitigants put in place have not been adequately maintained and so kitchen cupboards smelt damp and the dehumidifier in the second bedroom had not been emptied and there were no instructions on how to to do this. Unfortunately the beds in the second bedroom had not been made up as a double as requested via Sykes - the cleaner had not been requested to do so and she had no king sized quilt available to rectify. After the first night we realised that one of the single duvets smelt quite unpleasant (possibly a dog sleeping on the bed?) however given this was a bank holiday weekend we purchased a quilt and cover to address this. I am sure that if we had got in touch with the owner she would have dealt with this. This was obviously an issue which the cleaner had not picked up, however we must say that she was excellent in every other way, even going into town to pick up a tin opener just in case we needed one during our stay! As you can see the review is balanced, however the issues can easily be addressed and once dealt with should not detract from the enjoyment of the cottage in future.

Thank you so much for taking the time to feedback and for staying at Mazey. Absolutely all these issues can be resolved and are being. I'll soon be staying in Mazey myself so will be able to check for myself. We did have a message from Ronnie the gardener a couple of weeks ago informing me that the guests who were there at that time had allowed their dog to dig rather large holes in the lawn which he and his other gardener worked hard to try and resolve – maybe that has caused the slugs. That’s never been an issue before but we’ll ask Ronnie for a remedy. Apologies for Sykes not getting the arrangements right – we’ll raise that with them. And it sounds like the tin opener had gone missing. We ask all guests to let us know if something is broken or not there, as we can then replace it. Glad Michelle sorted that. As for dogs in general, we love that guests being them to share their holiday with them (our lab used to love the sea!), but we ask that they don’t sleep on the beds. Thank you agin for your feedback and please be reassured that if you ever wished to return to Mazey (and we hope you do) that all these issues will have been resolved :-) Property Owner

  • "Cottage in good location for exploring Cornwall."

Cottage well equipped, even though can opener broke the first night, was visible rusty, as well as the scissors. Had to buy both items to be able to have them for the duration of the holiday. Felt that these items should be checked by the cleaners as do not expect rusty kitchen utensils. Felt the overall cleanliness of the cottage was poor. The shutter style door for the pantry where the mugs was stored was filthy. There was crumbs in the utensils drawer. The chopping board was stained. The 'fan' mode on the oven doesnt work, arriving on the first night after a very long journey and waiting half hour for the oven to warm up before realising the fan oven must be broken. One of the bar stools was so noisy when sitting down on it, couldnt believe no one had reported this. Had to buy WD40 to sort it as couldnt bear listening to it when it was sat on. More than 1 tea towel would be helpful. The bathroom let the cottage down, mould on tiles, felt I needed to clean it before I used shower. The shower hose broke. Offered for maintenance to come to the property while we were there to change but no one did. The snug room door was very stiff, my son couldn't get out of the room and worryingly the window wouldnt open. I had to throw my weight at the door to get it to open.

I'm very happy that you felt the cottage was well equipped but do hope that the rusty scissors didn't affect your holiday too much. We do have 2 pairs so hopefully that helped the issue. Our housekeeper, Michelle, who has always done an incredible job on keeping Mazey impeccably spotless for our guests will be very concerned to hear that you felt the overall cleanliness was poor and she always leaves 2 tea towels one by the sink and one in the cupboard by the sink. I have never experienced problems entering or exiting the snug room but we are going down in October so I will check to see if I have any problems getting in or out of the room but I would be surprised if I did. I hope you enjoyed Penzance and the beautiful west Cornish coast. Property Owner

The location is perfect and only a short walk to the town and promenade. We had some lovely walks with our dog along the beach to St Michaels Mount and Marazion and a walk to Mousehole. We also enjoyed a day at Lands End which is only a short drive away. The welcome pack was lovely and we enjoyed our cream tea, Thankyou. We would definitely book again.

  • "A lot of the previous feedback regarding this cottage is quite accurate."

I'll start with the positives - it was very clean on arrival, the beds are very comfy, there is a lot of space in the house, the kitchen is well equipped and the location is good for access to the town. The upstairs bathroom is dated, but was clean and perfectly usable. The garden is smaller than appears in the picture but secure and well maintained. There is on street parking and we did manage to park, but had the last space in the street for the time that we were there. It was a busy week (whit week) but if we had been a group travelling with more than one car we might have struggled. All of the surrounding streets were busy too. The garage was not big enough to accommodate our car. I was expecting a cute row of cottages from the pictures, but the property is a terraced house situated in a network of residential streets. The negatives - despite being clean the house smells overwhelmingly damp and musty. There are damp patches on the kitchen wall where plaster has flaked and it is clear that black mould spores are coming through from the brickwork. Inside the kitchen cupboards smell damp and musty and even through everything was clean, it needed to be washed before use as the items felt like that had a layer of moisture on them. The downstairs toilet was damp. The upstairs back bedroom (where my children were sleeping) had several damp patches on the wall with paper lifting and peeling, moisture running down the inside of the wall and black mould on the skirting boards and all over the back of the curtain. I can only assume that whoever maintains the property is aware of this problem as there was a dehumidifier fan running in the bedroom on our arrival and a damp trap next to the wall. Myself and my daughter started to suffer respiratory problems and we had to leave after only 3 nights of a 7 night stay for our own health. My daughter had been sleeping about a foot away from the damp and mould. Sykes were notified the morning that we left and have been very slow to action our complaint or contact the owner. I am very confused as to the more recent reviews not mentioning this problem as the smell is throughout the whole of the downstairs of the house. There is a review from 2023 that mentions damp and mould in the kitchen cupboard and back bedroom that the owners stated had been resolved by the handyman but it seems that the problem is probably structural rather than something that can be solved with some decorating. We are very disappointed at both the situation that we found ourselves in (having to find alternative accommodation on a b/hol Monday with two children and a dog) but also the lack of response to my complaint.

Thank you for your feedback, we do take all feedback seriously. We are pleased to hear that you found many positive elements to the property, including cleanliness which we pride ourselves upon. This positive feedback seems to be in-keeping with other positive reviews. However we are disappointed to hear that you had some issues during your stay. In regards to the situation of the property, we do believe the photos and description are accurate and show that the property is located in a quiet terrace with no through road. Finally in regards to the damp issues you have mentioned, although it is common for a traditional Cornish Cottage's to experience occasional damp issues when a property is not ventilated, the walls in this cottage are treated regularly to prevent issues. As shown by previous positive feedback this does seem to be an isolated incident. Property Owner

  • "Overall we had a lovely stay at Mazey Cottage."

It is a lovely house and the bed in the main bedroom was scrumptious! The Front and back garden needs some tidying up and the bathroom could do with an update. The downfall for us was that it was at the top of a very steep hill (probably a 15 min walk up) and therefore could not walk into Penzance as I would not have been able to get back up. So be aware if you have any mobility issues. It did not stop us from having a lovely time and exploring glorious Cornwall. Thank you too for the cream tea that was there on arrival. A very nice gesture.

Thank you so much for taking the time to leave a review of your stay at Mazey Cottage and I'm so happy to hear that you found the cottage comfortable as it is so important to me that you feel at home and have everything you need there to help you enjoy your stay in this beautiful part of the country. I am very sorry though about the garden we had an issue with one of the employees from the gardening firm not showing up to attend the gardens for the last 2 weeks, unfortunately they had some personal issues and had to leave but all has now been resolved and both gardens have been tidied up and are now looking lovely again. There are a few different ways to walk into the town from the cottage and there is a flat option. If you turn right at the end of Treassowe Road and walk across the recreation ground then left you will come out at the top of Causeway Head in the town and it takes us under 10 minutes so I will make sure to put this into the visitors book so future guests are aware of this option. Thank you again for your review and I wish you a very happy summer and hope to welcome you back to Mazey cottage in the future. Rachel :-) Property Owner

  • "We've had a really good week in mazey cottage, the owner is a really nice man who gave us lots of tips on where to go!"

The cottage itself was clean and well equipped. You can see it's being renovated as bedrooms and lounge were new. Always places to park on the street. Friendly area. There's a few cons: the grass area is overgrown and unusable. There is a damp issue at the back of the house (it is an old house so expected) but that needs sorting because it was not suitable for our baby. The high chair wasn't clean and unfortunately had mould because of being stored in a cupboard at the back of the house, I had to deep clean this upon arrival. This could do with a new home until the damp is sorted. When this is sorted we would return, as we enjoyed walking into Penzance (quite far and steep) and enjoyed a short car ride into st Ives. Long rock beach was lovely and dog friendly all year round, most other beaches didn't allow dogs from July and August.

Thank you so much for taking the time to leave a review about your stay at Mazey cottage. It's extremely important to me that our guests enjoy their stay so I am keen to resolve any issues as soon as they arise. I am very sorry for the issues you had with the back bedroom and with the garden. We have an amazing 'handyman' who is super reliable and we can always rely on him to fix any maintenance issues so he has been in last week to solve the problem with the damp and I am also dealing with the cleaners about the high chair. Unfortunately one of the people who works for the gardener who has always attended the property every Friday had not been there the last 2 weeks and has subsequently left but the problem has now been solved-we have a replacement gardener and the owner of the firm has been in to make up for the work that was missed and the garden is looking lovely again. I am happy to hear that you had a good week and please feel reassured that the issues you had have now been rectified as we would love to welcome you back to Mazey Cottage in the future. It is in a good location close to bus and train station and an easy walk down to the town centre and promenade. Bus service around the coast is great and saves the use of a car if you don’t mind an energetic walk back uphill! The cottage makes for a pleasant stay and the beds in particular were extremely comfortable and made for a good nights’s sleep. We had a couple of small issues (leaking toilet and broken washing machine) which were rectified. The only criticism is that the bathroom lets this property down. The grouting badly needs redoing and the shower screen also as it makes the bathroom look dirty (even though it isn’t). The toilet cistern handle had to be fixed as it had a bad leak but even after fixing the flush wasn’t great. Shame that this lets a nice cottage down.

The location was great, just 15 minutes walk right into the centre of PZ. Parking was never an issue & the garage was great for storage. We stored our roofbox in there but could easily be used for a kayak etc. The cottage was clean & beautifully decorated in a seaside theme. We felt the 'play room' upstairs was a bit of a waste of a room, which could've been a 3rd bedroom but then we don't have small children anymore. The scones, jam & cream was a lovely touch thank you. Love a bit of Rhoddas! The only 2 things we would liked to be different would be better pillows in the main bedroom (ours were v flat & hard) and a better shower. The shower especially I think lets the rest of the house down a little but wouldn't stop us from coming back. But loved it, even spent a couple of evenings in the front garden having a beer on the small table & chairs. V nice
