"Buckland Monachorum is a great base for a Devon holiday, close to Western Dartmoor, the Tavy and Tamar valleys, various National Trust properties and the Route 27 coast-to-coast walking & cycling route."
Best of all, the fabulous Drake Manor Inn is just down the road and open for excellent food and drink seven days a week. The cottage is very cosy and clean, comfortably and interestingly furnished and has probably the best equipped kitchen of anywhere I’ve stayed in. It’s on the main street of the village but very quiet. There’s a beautiful garden - it wasn’t outdoor breakfast weather when we stayed, but we did enjoy getting the woodburner going. Garth the cottage owner lives in the village and was on hand and very helpful with any query. We had a lovely week and hope to come back.
Great comments. Glad you had a good stay despite the occasional storm! G. Property Owner
"Lovely cottage in the heart of a beautiful village."
A few doors up from a vibrant village pub and minutes from the moors for some great walks. Would highly recommend.
Thanks for the feedback. Sorry for being a little late, busy. Always good to hear how guests find their stay. Not just for me to respond to but valuable for others. Once again thanks. Garth. Property Owner
"We really enjoyed our time in the cottage."
Very comfortable and clean accomodation and a lovely garden to sit in. The Drake Manor Inn two minutes walk from the cottage is very good. We had two lovely meals there.
"We had a really lovely stay and found the accommodation very comfortable."
We received a very warm welcome and collected the keys easily. The cottage was in a great location for accessing many nearby attractions and it was very helpful having a dedicated parking space. We did find the water in the shower to be very hot, but once we'd found a comfortable temperature it was fine. We'd happily stay again and will be recommending to others looking to stay in the area.
"My second stay in this perfect cottage."
Everything there I could ask for. The cottage is absolutely gorgeous and I hope to return in 2023. Please see my previous review in October. PS Thank you again to Garth for your support during my car crisis!! We got back safely!!
"A hidden gem."
Beautiful cottage in a gorgeous Devon village. It was perfect in every way. Cosy, extremely well appointed and a real home from home. It’s a lot bigger inside than it looks from the outside and the garden is just lovely for those alfresco meals with or sitting quietly with a coffee. There is a wonderful pub in the village for drinks and food a very short walk away if you want to eat out. Location is brilliant for the moor and local walks and sightseeing. Just wonderful. If I could give it 10 stars I would!!
Thanks so much for your comments Lisa, so glad you had a great time and lucky with the weather. See you again soon. Garth. Property Owner
"We had an excellent stay at the cottage and Garth and Mandy were very welcoming."
The cottage has everything you are like to need and more and is very comfortable and beautifully clean and there is a lovely spot to sit out in the garden. We would highly recommend this lovely cottage
Thanks Paul. Great to have you stay. Sorry about the delay in responding, been busy. Do hope you had a safe journey home and I do hope we meet again. Garth. Property Owner
"What a wonderful, relaxing and clean cottage, a real home from home."
We had a fantastic time exploring Dartmoor and the coast. We will definitely be back!
Thanks Sam, great to have you here. Always welcome. Garth. Property Owner
"It was a pleasure to return to the cottage, both for the welcome and the facilities."
A great find. Now seen the village in both Feb and June, delightful, unspoilt rural Devon despite being close to Plymouth. Hint - drive to Bere Alston and go in on the train.
Always welcome David. Will be here for you in the future. Garth. Property Owner
"Very good standard of fittings and equipment, with everything you need to hand."
Two excellent pubs nearby, one in walking distance and one not much more than five minutes by car. Also plenty of NationalTrust properties in easy reach. Everyone you meet is exceptionally friendly!
Thanks David. Glad you had a great stay. See you again? Property Owner
"What an absolute gem."
We loved our stay here we had everything we needed and more. The property was comfortable clean and well equipped. Wonderful comfy bed and amazing sheets, excellent quality kitchen appliances and a perfect setting. I couldn’t recommend it more.
Such a lovely response, thanks so much Debra. I do hope to see you again. Garth. Property Owner
"Thank you Garth for your welcome and help explaining things both as we arrived and as we bumped into you during the week."
Excellent facilities, place spotlessly clean, was sorry to leave and intend to use this as a base again. Enjoyed the pub (Jail Ale and food especially) - would have used more if we could! Only 65 paces cottage to pub! Diane and David
Thanks David great to meet you. G. Property Owner
"From the outside this is a modest looking little cottage, but inside things look very different."
Bigger than you'd expect, with good quality comfortable furnishings, a magnificent kitchen (you could feed 20 people with the equipment here!), excellent heating and fast wifi. There's also a good garden out the back which would be nice on a warm summer evening, although I was there in January so didn't get much chance to use it. Thoroughly recommended.
Thanks for that Geoff. Hope to see you again. Garth. Property Owner
"No 11 The Village is a very cosy cottage and an ideal place to stay for exploring Dartmoor."
There are plenty of good walks to be found within a 20 min drive. Although it has only a small frontage on the street, the rear of the cottage has been extended and the property is surprisingly spacious. It has been finished to a high standard and is comfortable and well equipped. The Drake Inn is only 100m away and the food and local ales are excellent. The cottage is highly recommended and we will look to return in the future.
"Great cottay, Garth very helpful, good pub in village, lovely village, great ..."
Great cottay, Garth very helpful, good pub in village, lovely village, great cottage, very comfy bed, kitchen excellent very well equipped, great location
"A great cottage and an enjoyable holiday!"
"Very clean and well provisioned cottage with everything we needed in a lovely quiet village."
The parking can be a bit of an issue with a crowded street. A plug for the bath would have been nice also. However, overall, the cottage did the three of us adults very well and we enjoyed our stay. There is lots to do in the area and we stayed away from the crowds.
"A lovely comfortable cottage, very quiet and well equipped."
The owners are on hand if needed and very friendly and hospitable. The only two suggestions for improvement we would make are: 1. Consider installing a blackout blind in the little bedroom - the sun shines right through first thing in the morning. 2. Consider putting a larger sofa in the living room. It was impossible for the three of us to sit together as the sofa only fits two.
"The cottage was lovely."
A great location for walking, cycling, visits, or just a relaxing time. Excellent hospitality from the publican (and owner of the cottage) and his team and we were even treated to an evening of impromptu folk music from local musicians on our last night. Superb.
"We had a lovely time."
Garth was very helpful and sorted out all hitches very quickly.
"This was an excellent cottage, well equipped and very clean."
Good central heating and a log burner make it very suitable for a winter break. Situated in a lovely village with the local pub serving good food. Enjoyed the local walking. Will definitely look to revisit this property.
"Excellent cottage in beautiful village location, very well equipped and comfortable."
Hosts very helpful. Drake Manor Inn only yards away, excellent food, service and friendly welcoming staff. Would definitely recommend.
"The cottage was very homely and well equipped."
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at no. 11. 'Home from home' is all I can say - you will not be disappointed with your stay here. The owners were on hand but gave you privacy at the same time. Lovely to sit on the patio in the rear garden in view of the local church. Buckland Monachorum is a quiet village with walking distance to the pub! Book your Sunday lunch when you arrive on the Friday night - you wont be disappointed! Dont miss out on nearby 'The Garden House' - a true gem of a place with beautiful plants. Easy acess to both the Moors and Plymouth made this a great location for exploring the area. We also enjoyed the local rivers and walks. Comfy beds, plenty hot water, heating when required, very clean and comfortable place to stat. Parking was not an issue - there was always a space in the carpark opposite if you couldnt park outside the house. Only downside was we had to go home! Would love to go back!
"Garth, the local publican and owner of the cottage was extremely helpful and welcoming."
A tranquil, rural gem, hidden away on Dartmoor, yet within easy reach of both Tavistock and Plymouth. Would love to return to 11 The Village in autumn/winter and fire up the wood burning stove!
"A beautifully presented cottage and a perfect base for exploring Dartmoor and the surrounding areas."
The cottage was perfect for a restful week 'away from it all' and contained everything needed. The garden also provided a peaceful but interesting area to relax in. The owner was welcoming and helpful and the pub down the road was very friendly and served excellent food. All in all, the perfect location for a relaxing holiday.
"We have stayed at this cottage many times in the last two years and it suits our needs as a couple perfectly."
"Lovely cottage ,well presented ,very friendly owner, would recommend to friends &family"
"The cottage was beautifully presented, comfortable and well equipped."
The owner gave us a very warm welcome and showed us around. We spent most of our time walking in the chilly January weather but it was wonderful to come back to the cottage for a cosy evening in front of the log burner. The perfect cottage for relaxation and reflection! The local pub, just a few yards away, was really friendly and the food was fabulous, especially for those with a healthy appetite! In all, the perfect spot for a getaway!
"It's a great cottage and definitely very comfortable and the owner is friendly and accommodating so very good for a holiday."
There is no phone signal at all and I think it's important you let people know this. And, with no phone signal the wifi needs to be stable but it jumped in and out constantly leaving me with no connection for several minutes at a time.
"A wonderful cottage which felt more like a home than a holiday let."
The kitchen had everything you would need - excellent new oven and washing machine, lots of pans, crockery, kitchen implements. We really loved our week here. The beds were comfortable and the garden an added bonus. We would happily stay at 11 The Village again.
"The cottage was small but clean, comfortable and well equipped, with a lovely sunny, peaceful and secluded garden with views of the church."
The landlord runs the nearby pub which is friendly and has good food. He was helpful and extremely knowledgeable about the local area. A great place to stay and one we plan to go back to.
"Excellent cottage and garden in beautiful village and very well equipped."
Owner more than helpful. Lovely, friendly pub within walking distance with very good food, service and helpful, friendly staff. Lovely location and plenty to do nearby. Would definitely recommend and would definitely stay again.
"Very pleasent holiday in good quiet surroundings with no over flying large passenger aircraft ."
Really welcome. Greeted on arrival by Garth Redgrave, the owner who showed us where all and how all equipment worked, leaving typed sheets for our use. This pleasent man supplied a bottle of milk and packet of biscuits for our first cup of tea which was very enjoyable sat in the back garden in the sun unwinding after our 200 mile journey. The cottage was well equipped with cooker, microwave ,large fridge freezer, plenty of crockery/cutlery and glassware etc.TV reception was good but wifi/internet/phone was patchy occasionally.(Hooray --- no phone calls from relatives etc.) There were leaflets and guides for various places to visit, etc Historical houses and National Trust properties were in easy travel distance but the park and ride at the George was welcome for a day in central Plymouth. The Drake pub was just down the street, good food etc short walking distance./Garth was also the landlord. A nice quiet pleasent holiday, hoping the Sept holiday will be as good.
"Booked through booking."
Com with no issues. Had 2 telephone calls from Sykes - 1 call to obtain my email details where the member of staff was very offhand because I asked why you needed the information what you would do with it. The 2nd call was the day AFTER we had moved in to confirm the key collection details and contact point for the house owner. We had already been in the property for 24 hours. Its a good job that booking.com gave us all the information. Your staff seemed to be ticking a box to confirm they had actioned something without checking the details first and being unable to answer questions. The house itself was perfect and this feedback is solely about Sykes.
"To get to the cottage you drove through beautiful Dartmoor putting you in the holiday mood & it was great to arrive at this cottage which was wonderful with quirky decorations."
The facilities at the cottage were superb, the owner had thought of everything that you may need as a holiday rental I wouldn’t hesitate staying here again
"The owner was friendly and we had a warm welcome."
Well equipped and we were comfortable.
"Cottage is perfect - with lots (and lots) of little thoughtful extras."
Garth could not have been more helpful and welcoming too - we told him ourselves how impressed we were with his cottage. I cannot think of anything that was not spot on.
"This is a lovely cottage in a lovely village."
Had a great 3 days there
"I don't think anywhere has actually exceeded our expectations before."
The WOW factor on entering the living room, with its log burning stove and well thought out mood lighting, was a great place to unwind with a bottle of wine in the evenings. Well, every evening actually! The kitchen: I have never seen a rented accommodation with such an array of high quality appliances, especially the cooker. It's the same make as ours but with one more burner (6) and a warming plate. Great fun! The double bed has a mattress that started sorting out my back pain on night one, so we're off to John Lewis today to buy one like it. Overall, a very good stay in a quiet location on the Moors and ideally placed to visit the well known spots of Devon and Cornwall. Just a hundred yards away, there is an excellent pub, the Drake Inn. Fresh local beers and very, very good food. The property owners are close by if help is needed, and they are genuinely helpful. If we were to be ultra picky, the kitchen needs more plug sockets but that really is it! Ella and Cliff
"Wonderful cottage, beautiful village, had everything we could possibly need."
"We have stayed in this cottage before so knew what to expect."
First time we used the log burning stove which was very efficient and made the cottage warm and cosy. Had everything you could expect and was an ideal home from home which is what we required.
"The cottage was extremely comfortable and well-appointed."
I've stayed in a number of Helpful Holiday properties before and this was up to the usual high standard. I would stay here again.
"The cottage was really lovely, comfortable and stylish inside."
We were made to feel very welcome and had a great stay.
"The cottage was perfect for our needs and had everything we could have wanted."
The village was friendly with a great local pub which did good food and drink. There is no shop in the village but Yelverton, a short drive away, was able to meet most daily requirements.
"For anyone seeking a quiet relaxing holiday then this could be for you, however having a six year old we were out and about all the time but the cottage was a welcoming place."
Garth and Mandy have tastefully decorated the cottage as a cottage should be given the history in the village. With its spacious kitchen/diner, snug living room and two good sized bedrooms this is a must. With The Drake Manor Inn offering very good food (my daughter said the best chips ever) and a very good selection of local ales and apple juice you do not need to go far for lunch or an evening meal. All in all this cottage and location just off the Moor deserve 11/10 on all counts.
"Lovely cottage and hosts, beautiful village."
The cottage was cosy yet modern with great facilities and near to a lovely pub with fantastic food. The helpful holidays team were very helpful, and helped us sort this booking quickly and efficiently.
"We highly recommend this cottage."
It has been attractively furnished, and very clean. The owner has also added thoughtful touches to help make your stay very comfortable. The garden is lovely, and a pretty place to sit and have breakfast at the picnic table, as we did! You are situated on the edge of Devon, close to the Cornwall border - an ideal location to visit lovely places in both counties. A fabulous cottage in a beautiful village - with a lovely pub that does good food - we will be back!
"This cottage is clean & lovely with everything we could have needed & hosts Garth & Mandy couldn’t have been more helpful."
There's an excellent pub nearby & plenty to do in the area – there’s a footpath from behind the church to the Garden House, Buckland Abbey is less than a mile away, Tavistock is in easy reach & there's plenty of walking/cycling trails nearby. A couple of tiny things to be aware of – there was no phone signal in the house – though it was fine from the car park across the road & the cottage has wifi so not a problem for us, plus the very last bit of the road to the village is quite narrow (ie with passing places) – but in Devon most of the best places seem to be down the narrowest of roads (Cotehele is 20 times worse than the Buckland road!). All in all a wonderful, relaxing stay. Highly recommended.
