  • "We loved the house, the location with the views across Dartmouth old town."

The house was spotless and the kitchen well provided for all we needed throughout our stay. The hot water was HOT and it arrived in quick time too!!! We must add here, however, we needed additional blankets on the colder nights. We will be looking to book again for our next visit to my home town.

  • "Fairview House is a very well furnished and well equipped property."

Sadly our stay was spoilt by scaffolding around the property, which we were made aware of on the Friday evening before travelling, also that it should be removed by the Monday. This didn’t happen. We were not told that the very restricted parking space was half taken up with scaffolding planks and poles, making it extremely difficult to park. The entrance to the property was also made precarious by the scaffolding particularly when it rained as we were unable to use the hand rail to descend the steps. Phone calls to Sykes Cottages were made with a promise to call back, no one called me back for each of the 5 calls that I made. A financial agreement was reached, but of course this did not solve the problem. It could have been a lot more straightforward if Sykes had been more transparent and honest with me. We should have been offered alternative accommodation, or at least the opportunity to consider another property. A very disappointing experience.

My wife ran her own cleaning service and she said that the cleaning of the place was 'top notch'. View was marvellous, although my family were transfixed that the hills were that steep (having grown up in the area, I knew!) . Had a wonderful week, thank you

  • "Accommodation comfortably sleeps two couples and 4 children, outside space is great though elevated eating area often needs a clean due to seagulls."

Toilet facility on each floor is useful. Road up and down to the accommodation is very tight requiring driving on the path and parking spaces are also tight though welcome (compared to parking on the road). Thoroughly enjoyable accommodation with great views across Dartmouth and within a 10 minute walk to the centre of the town.

  • "A lovely, very well eqipped house in a very beautiful location, with lots of character."

We felt fitter after using steps and stairs at this property ( there were four generations of our family staying for a short period of our stay) - fortunately there was a loo on every floor! Some of the decor and kitchen bathroom facilities would soon benefit from an update. The steep access roads were a shock at first but they were worth it for the amazing view and we did just mange to get our two cars on the allotted space. There are some very pretty walking routes to and from the town. The external upstairs seating area had not been cleaned for a very long time which we were not able to use, however the lawn was mowed very soon after our request. We enjoyed our stay in Dartmouth very much.

  • "This house had everything you needed and more for a rental property and was really comfortable."

Stunning house on three levels and gorgeous sun rise and sun setting views and plenty of room for our family of five. All adults. We parked the cars up on the gravel area which was a little tight for two cars and a little awkward on the narrow lane especially with cars parked right opposite. However we did lots of walking into Dartmouth sometimes 3 times a day which wasn’t too far. Really a chilled place to relax. Although not good for anybody with limited mobility because you would have to drive in. We Would highly recommend this house and would hopefully revisit.

Arthur loved the big teddy and carried him around the house. Wanted to take him home but said that he needed to stay for the next child to enjoy. Best equipped kitchen I've seen. Enjoyed a BBQ, sitting in the covered area to eat lunch. The wood floor and table here needs stripping and repainting as it is peeling. Need better info. on the steep stairs to top floor and down to kitchen, house only suitable for able bodied persons. But the house is beautifully furnished. Scary sharp bend to access road, and riding car half on the pavement to get past parked cars. Would be an asset if you built up one side of the garden so that you could do a better hard standing for us to park our cars. A hot tub would fit nicely behind the table on the high rise place where the table and chairs are.

  • "When we booked the holiday it said the Cottage overlooked the river Dart, and you had to go up to the top floor of the house, or up onto very high raised decking outside to actually see it."

There were multiple issues from marks on furniture, stains, damp, damaged items (that we had to report to Coast and Country Cottages asap due to threat of liability), air fresheners everywhere that cause asthma, multiple windows glazing failed/inner condensation, dust and debris, food left under table, the bed on the middle floor was dirty and unchanged as it clearly had been slept on on the left side as you looked at the bed it also had sand in it too and made this room uninhabitable, numerous broken blinds, broken chair, floors not mopped, rubbish left from previous guest, being forced to open a gate for a gardener when the gate just needed a push, no welcome tray, toilet seats on all 3 toilets broken, dirty cooking pans, not enough cups for size of property, radiators closed off so rooms did not get warm especially in kitchen, BBQ absolutely filthy, stairs that able bodied people struggle with as there was no banister, issues in guest book that are still present. There is a need to inform guests of certain requirements like needing black bin bags to put bedding in. Width restrictions for vehicle access to the property and parking would be a struggle with more than 1 car or a larger wider vehicle, also parked cars directly opposite make access and egress challenging.

  • "The house was lovely, in a great location and as described."

The lay out of the house was good for 2 families. The lawn wasn't cut when we got there but we let you know and it was mowed the same day which made a real difference. The blinds in the super king room were not effective at all so the light shone through really early every day and woke us up. I brought a sleep mask which helped. There was a lot of dust under the furniture and on the blinds, it didnt affect the stay as only noticed the floors when hoovering on the last day. Overall a great stay.

One of the two radiators not working in the kitchen/diner. Had to run a lot of water from the kitchen hot tap before water ran hot. Reported the above two items to the Dartmouth office during our first week and was told the maintenance man would fix them but he never came to the house and carried out the work! This resulted in us being cold at times in the kitchen/diner and not being able to watch tv in the main bedroom for the whole of our stay.

  • "We had a lovely time at the house."

Very nicely situated. Has a great sun deck (it's a sun trap, which was very useful for our stay in April). Comfortable rooms. Nicely equipped kitchen. Downsides? not many. Perhaps not suitable for elderly/infirm as there is a steep walk up from the town (and steps down to the front door). And the road to the house is somewhat challenging-don't bring a wide car! But the driving is entertaining... I've noticed that some other reviewers have commented that it needs updating/minor repairs, but I didn't spot much that needed doing. Overall a very happy holiday. Would happily go there again.

  • "The property was overall lovely, and comfortable."

The issues we had were as follows... Accessibility: the description of the access to and within the property is limited on the site. The road to access is incredibly tight and difficult to navigate, especially for large vehicles. The layout of the house was not clear from description I.e two separate flights of steep and narrow stairs to access kitchen and bedroom. Not a disabled friendly property at all. Garden area: no furniture provided aside from a bench! No shaded area or parasol and the raised decking area very unkempt and rundown. Not helpful in a heatwave. Area just needs a good paint and clean up. Equipment: TV very dated and instructions unclear on how to use. Tv’s in bedrooms missing remotes so could not use freeview. Tumble dryer not working correctly. upstairs electric shower head needs a clean as holes blocked and water spraying outside of bath. Storage: every cupboard in the kitchen in use so limited space to store a weeks worth of food that had been delivered. The whole house needs some TLC, e.g finding room chair pads stained and quite damp, general re-decoration. However, we did have a wonderful week, excellent base for Dartmouth, and house more than met our needs, with a bit of attention paid to it would be an outstanding property.

The house certainly had a 'wow' factor, with really lovely furnishings and interesting pieces of art work. Views from the house were lovely and it was only a brief walk into Dartmouth, which is a picturesque coastal town. There are antique shops, ice cream parlours and lots of pubs and places to eat. Steep walk back up the hill, but we'll worth the effort.

  • "Dartmouth is an absolutely beautiful place with lots to do for three generations of a family in the local area."

The house exceeded expectations in terms of its space and character: we were a group of 6 and we had lots of space. One small point is that we would have appreciated a few bits to “get us going” before our shopping arrived - ie some hand soap/loo rolls. Anyway, we would definitely return to Fairview House and Dartmouth.

  • "Basically a lovely, roomy house with plenty of sunny outside space and superb views of "The Hill" across the valley in Dartmouth."

Needs updating, however. Only 8 mugs provided and half of them chipped. Dodgy dishwasher. Lack of kitchen equipment. Opaque TV instructions and no pause/replay/record facility. Smelly bathroom (mould on shower curtain and around bath) with over-engineered shower. Shower room potentially quite cold and desperately in need of major update. Heating/hot water very good, with full access to controls. Parking for 3 cars, but access/egress tricky, to say the least. Fairview Road is aptly named and is a quiet backwater well up out of the bustle of Town. Utterly ruined, however, by the minority of dog walkers who leave mess everywhere – including just outside the gate and on the private parking bay behind the car. Also regularly dropped into the gull-proof refuse collection sacks. A major spoiler.

  • "Fairview House is a lovely property for young and the not so young."

It is large, clean and spacious with the added bonus of parking for three cars, which is exceptional in Dartmouth, where it is so hard to park. The large garden with decking and grass is provided with barbeque, picnic benches and table and chairs. Plenty of room for children to run around in. We were a party of 4 adults and two very young children and the accommodation worked perfectly for us. You can walk down to the harbour in 20 minute, but beware it is a steep hill down and feels twice as steep coming up! However the no. 90 or 90a bus from the Station Restaurant is every 15 minutes and stops at the top of Fairview Road, and it is then only a few minutes walk to the house. Altogether a lovely property in a beautiful location and would return.
